TLDR: One of two existing Conan's locations, open since the 70s (the original closed in 2018). Awesome fantasy pulp aesthetic with private dive-y booths as well as board games and arcade games. My pizza had a very crispy crust which I don't personally enjoy. PIZZA: To be completely honest, I wasn't a huge fan of Conan's pizza -- just not for me. I don't like the crispy crust. I respect the twisted crust thing they do but I prefer mine doughy. I am assuming this was intentional but I guess it's possible they overcooked it? Either way, the crust was really crispy. I also felt like the tomato sauce overpowered the cheese. That being said, the toppings (mushrooms and sausage) were good. So why am I still giving it 5 stars?! Because I loved the vibe SO MUCH. Plus pizza is a bit subjective and one of those foods that is fun to eat even when it doesn't knock your socks off. INTERIOR: What is it about Conan's that's so awesome? It has a 70s / 80s fantasy pulp / heavy metal fantasy aesthetic (think Frank Frazetta). It has board games and a few arcade games. It has a dive-y feel but is also pretty neat / clean. My favorite part is the seating though. There are mostly private booths (each in their own little enclave) decorated with posters and covered with graffiti doodles. So, like a little dive-y joint that you have all to your group. I would have loved to go on a date here! And if booth graffiti is not your jam, there's a really nice elevated seating area by the entrance (complete with lovely hanging ivy plants). After seeing the hype online, I had high expectations, but they blew them out of the water. This pizza is a masterpiece. The quality of the ingredients is what really sets them apart. When 1 large meaters pizza and 1 salad (not including tip) is $50 the staff should at least be mildly friendly and not rude. I'm from Austin, been eating here my entire life. I am so sad to write this review but it was indeed not good. We stopped by for my daughter's birthday - she turned 5. We just wanted a cool 80s pizza vibe and have always wanted to try this place. Living in RR, its a bit of a drive so we stopped in and wow. loved the ambiance. sadly the food was horrible (for us). We ordered breadsticks but it was like 2 pieces of burnt garlic toast. (misread that one but they really served us burnt bread) We ate around it like we would if we were at home, but we werent.. we were at a restaurant. This spot is forever nostalgic and I'm glad they haven't given into modernization. They have great lunch specials and a solid rewards program. The rules: Get the deep dish on wheat of whatever you want. Get a side of ranch. Eat to your heart's desire (which will probably be less slices than you're used to). Ordered takeout from this place and my favorite was the garlic bread! It was a bit sweet which was unique and I enjoyed it. Pizza was advertised as deep dish but was definitely more of a deep-pan style. It was pretty good but the tomato sauce was a bit too sour for my taste. I would probably eat here again and try their other specialty pizzas. I am a huge fan of thick crust/deep dish pizza so this place did fulfill my cravings. We decided to visit on our way out of town back to Fort Worth, because our family in the Austin area raves about this place, and it's easy to tell why! First of all, it has such an awesome ambience - all the beautiful wooden interior in combination with tons of real greenery. We sat in one of the elevated areas with tables that has a TV (we sat in the front area, but there's another in the back too), but they also have lots of intimate booths as well. The staff was very nice and helpful, and the wait for fresh pizza was very reasonable. The pizza was delicious, we both tried the wheat dough as recommended - my husband did deep dish and I did thin. The underside of the crust is neat and unique. I also liked that they have Maine Root sodas. And if we lived close to this place, we'd absolutely be taking advantage of their lunch deal regularly. This place is one Austin's finest institutions. We usually order the carnivore with jalapeños instead of bell peppers....and absolutely no anchovies. The pizza always has lots and lots of flavorful toppings. The sausage is (in my opinion) absolutely delicious. It's not minced but rather served in nicely sized mini meat balls. I absolutely love the sauce they use for their pies. It has a lovely tomato flavor that is seasoned quite well. You order at the counter, but the pie is delivered to your table. This place is very Austin. The wait staff are always friendly and accommodating. We usually sit in the elevated section because they have their television there and we like to watch a ball game while enjoying our pizza. This is such a blast from the past. We went to celebrate a birthday that was coincidentally the same day as the original Conan's Pizza opened in 1976, and so many memories of the 1980s came rushing back just being in this space that looks like it hasn't changed since that era. The interior is rustic with lots of wood beams and bannisters, with hanging plants that add some life, and so much Conan the Barbarian fantasy art adorning every space, along with other comic book art and similar subjects. There are so many instantly recognizable 1980s elements like the tables with thick clear coat, a couple of elevated dining areas that look down on the booths arranged around the edges, and even mirror walls that make the space look larger. You honestly won't realize all the way things have changed in restaurants until you step back in time here and it all comes flooding back. We ordered a large pan pizza since that's their specialty and went for one of the designed favorites that had artichoke, tomato, garlic, and spinach, and just added chicken and hamburger for the carnivorous barbarians that we are. We also picked the whole wheat crust which is another retro element that I don't remember seeing elsewhere. Sadly they messed up and didn't give us pesto sauce instead of the regular tomato sauce, and I'll say the meat was pretty skimpy although delicious. But overall the food tasted great and while the price was steep at about $32, it was worth it for the nostalgia and the portion fed three people fine. Do expect to wait a bit, though - it was over 30 minutes to be delivered to our table. And this was on a Wednesday afternoon with only a couple other tables active. Of course you can also order your pizza to go too, but you really shouldn't miss out on the amazingly vintage experience complete with loud 1980s music, a handful of old arcade games in front, and tons of personality throughout. I am closer to 60 than I am to 50 now. Conan's has been a favorite of mine for a very long time. I had not had in well over a year since I don't live in Austin anymore. I got a craving I could not quiet today so I headed in while headed home from South Austin. I ordered two Savages, one large and one medium. One on white and one on wheat. Yes, absolutely both had jalapeño added. I was not aware when I arrived they were prepping a very large order for someone that got there before I did. I had no idea I would sit there waiting for almost an hour. Thing is....I did not mind. I scrolled on my phone and let the smell of the pizzas make my craving just grow. One of the managers, Charles, was working the register plus helping get pies out when he could. He soon captured my attention with how very pleasant and kind he was to everyone he interacted with. Everyone was a treasured friend he was so happy to see. It was a pleasure to hear and watch. He was soooo busy. He ever got flustered or showed a sign of agitation. He just rolled with it. At about the 50 min mark, I got our pies and headed 30 min away to drop one off then head home after another 15 min. My pizza was still hot. It was everything I wanted...had been craving. I started eating there in junior high. It was a major treat then and remains so now. So many places I enjoyed as a kid are gone. I am so grateful Conan's is still around with my favorite pizza plus now my favorite location manager. read more

Came here for lunch early on a Sunday afternoon. The wait to order was fairly short and our pizza took about a half hour to make. There were plenty of open tables, but also quite a lot of take out. By the time we left we overheard it would take 75m for a deep dish pizza. It was Super Bowl Sunday, but it was early enough in the day that I don't think this was the cause. Your enjoyment of Conans will very much be a function of your expectations. If you come in expecting it to compare to what is available in Chicago or even other major cities deep dish wise I think you'll come away dissapointed. If this is your first time having deep dish or if you compare it to the Austin pizza scene as a whole I think you'll really enjoy it! The major pros for me are the deliciously soft dough, erring heavily on the cheesy side, and level of customizability. Usually the latter is a bad sign to me on the quality of a base pizza, but I thought even their regular pepperoni pizza was quite good. The service is also quite friendly and the vibe overall is very welcoming, can certainly see this becoming a more regular spot. Surprisingly the crust did give me frozen pizza vibes, odd given the base of the pizza came out pretty good. I didn't love the sauce, and generally that is the most important aspect of deep dish so I get why its received so much heat on here. However the pizza being so cheesy makes up for it in my mind, but I'm more of a cheese person. The only other con I found was that it is noticably thinner than any other in restaraunt deep dish I've had. Overall, I think this spot is worth checking out, but coming in with the appropriate mindset is key. The photos we saw online did not match what we saw in person. Online it seemed like a nice bistro, but it is an odd ambiance. Many photos of fantasy style figures, perfect for kids. Booths are rather small and uncomfortable for 4 people to eat more than one pizza as there is not enough space. The service was a little rough, they yell your name out rather than bringing food to table and it's an awkward space to walk through. The calzone was pretty good. The wait time they told us for food was over 45 min. It did not take that long for the calzone, but it did for the pizza. I love pizza, but bad service puts a bad taste in my mouth. Everyday in my job I'm told to give the customer a reason to return. Make them feel valued because after all they are the reason you are there. So, for starters, when a customer is standing at the register...and standing...and standing, while 4 guys are in the kitchen (one replaced the till while chatting with the others and walked off without even a glance) and the girl upfront saunters in and just stand there (so much for a greeting) these action don't inspire ME to return. Austin has good food on every corner making bad behavior by the staff one good reason not to return. The only reason I gave 3 stars is because the pizza was good as always. We had not been to a Conans since the early days down on Guadalupe. We aren't fans of deep dish, so they just weren't on our regular pizza rotation. A friend recently mentioned that they now also serve thin crust. So in we went. The Anderson Lane location is pretty close to home. What a great surprise! I wanted to like this place. I *really* did. Walking in and see the video games (Area 51! My favorite!), and seeing Star Wars playing on the TV--this place is calling my name. There are multiple seating areas, some elevated, some on the regular floor, and some toward the back. Keeps the restaurant from having massive noise. We ordered a deep dish pizza and a thin crust. We didn't mind the wait--fresh pizza is always worth the wait. When we checked our order, the pizzas looked great, so we headed home. That's when it all went downhill. After eating one slice of each, we realized the problem. It's all about the sauce. Our pizzas were bland. Scraping the sauce off improved the thin crust pizza. That crust is great. This place is best experienced in person, BUT UNDERSTAND that due to staffing shortages (like at most place right now) you must be patient with the staff who are working because they are doing their best to provide you quality food and a great dining experience! I ordered one large deep dish pizza on their website yesterday. It was a super easy process, and allows you to add different toppings to each half. We did the whole pizza with conan sauce, mozzarella, sliced tomato, canadian bacon, and pepperoni. Then one half had bacon, the other had feta and green pepper. After ordering it stated it would be ready in 60 minutes, which it was! We did curbside pickup, which worked seamlessly. I love their tavern style gluten - free crust. If you check in on Yelp, you get free vegan Daiya cheese. I ordered the BBQ chicken pizza, but I couldn't taste the BBQ sauce. I asked if they added BBQ sauce, but they said it was mixed in with the marinara sauce. All I tasted was marinara and no BBQ sauce. They didn't even toss the chicken in BBQ sauce like CPK does. Luckily, they gave me two sides of BBQ sauce at no additional charge. My recommendation would be to omit the marinara sauce completely and spread BBQ sauce only. read more

Unfortunately, on a recent trip to Conans North I found they had switched non-alcoholic beers from one of the best NA beers (Athletic Brewing Co.'s "Upside Dawn Golden") to an awful product called Best Day Brewing Kolsch style. This replacement tasted like watered down apple juice and had nothing in common with beer. I will still go to Conans North when I want a pizza but I will not waste my money on their replacement NA beer. read more

I tried Conan's Pizza back in the mid eighties and I fell in love for the first time. The amount of awesome memories and full stomachs I have enjoyed after eating here are countless. I have now passed the torch on to my son and he has been a true fan as well. We normally have a white crust deep dish with pepperoni and Canadian bacon but sometimes we get crazy and have The Savage!!! My wife loves their wings and you just can't beat the interior of the place. I was sad when they closed the UT campus location, but we still have Conan's North!!! I'm not sure where all the hype comes from for this place. I really wanted to like it, especially after seeing the many reviews raving about it, along with their menu. It's a very swanky, interesting little setup (arcade games, neat, mismatched art all along the walls, cozy little hidden booths). The workers were cool and the service was good, but I can't really say the same for the actual food itself - especially for the price point. We spent about $63 before tip on our order, and it was severely lacking in flavor and value. Food ratings: - Caesar salad (3/5): Self explanatory. Nothing out of the ordinary. Decent. Would be better tossed. - Baked wings (4/5): Probably the only good thing we ate. They took about 15 mins. but are worth the wait - they're baked fresh and have good flavor. We dipped ours in ranch. - Sausage and mushroom deep dish (2/5) - Don't Choke Art deep dish (2/5) The pizza - what they're known for - was so disappointing. The crust reminded me of Chuck E. Cheese or equivalent. I understand we opted for deep dish, but it was too bread-y and just not tasty, but that's also because the sauce was not it (the sauce makes the pizza!), it was bland and almost too sweet! I'm not a huge pizza fan and I have never tried deep dish pizza. In honor of National Pizza Day, I decided to give Conan's since they are known for their deep dish. For appetizer we ordered their garlic bread. Although their marinara sauce paired well with the bread...the marinara sauce was cold. We had their Supreme deep dish pizza which was surprisingly tasty. I can't say that I would eat deep dish pizza again but it was a good to try it out. The dough was more soft and I prefer more of a crunchy crust. We did not like the garlic bread that came with the Caesar salad. It was good but overly drenched in butter. I think this place is solid if you're into deep dish pizza.
