Overall, it wasn't bad. However.... Meat and fish wasn't good. Ribeye and lamb had a terrible char on them making then extremely bitter. I like a good char, niblets, healthy marbling etc... This was burnt on the outside. Cooked perfectly inside, but the char infiltrated the jus and the meat and was just terrible. I was offered a replacement, an offer I very rarely accept, and it was over cooked as well. Sea Bass. Great seasoning, garnish etc, but over cooked. Not nearly as bad as the meats, but on a replacement, should be perfect. Drinks were great. Service of drinks was 50/50. Before dinner, no issues. During dinner, tough to get a refill on drinks. Our server had way too many tables on her own, multiple 4-6 top tables and one waitress with one maybe two support staff but they never came around. Great menu, great drinks, service was great on bar staff, not great on dinner staff. Apps, garnish, seasoning excellent execution and flavor, execution on grill though, potentially the worst I've ever had. Just bad. Meal should've been comped. Spoke directly to the owner, and "I'm sorry" was the response, no real inquiry or offer of compensation etc. $150 meal. $80 pre dinner bar tab. Wouldn't return unless they fix the grill issue. read more

Food- 7/10 We ordered the ahi appetizer. Very good! The creme fraiche was a creative touch. My partner didn't like it as much. It felt like a take on caviar and creme fraiche We split the waygu burger. Thos could have been better. They cooked it as we asked. The let down was that it looked and tasted like a pre formed patty one could get at the grocery store. A hand shaped thicker patty would have elevated the simple burger. Season the meat. Vesper martini-delicious, well balanced and pretty good size too! Oysters- delicious and fresh. Only complaint is there were pieces of shell in a couple of the oysters but otherwise very good! Filet carpaccio- fresh, well seasoned and balanced. For anyone lacking acid, make sure you get a bit of everything on each bite, the acid comes from the veggies in the middle and the capers! Our server, Ryan, was the perfect combo of fun, friendly and professional. We started with cocktails - Greenpoint and Basil Gimlet, both were well-balanced. Oysters were nice and fresh, of the 12, only one was "off". The seared ahi entree was prepared well with tender ahi and firm rice. I couldn't taste the miso-honey glaze on the fish or the wasabi in the beurre blanc but it was still a really enjoyable. My husband had no complaints about the rack of lamb and for dessert we had key lime pie. Possibly the best I've ever had - tart and creamy with a graham cracker crumble. I have been coming to Blue for many years. Last night we had a very bad experience. All of our dishes were bland. The halibut was so overcooked we had to send it back. The replacement was slightly better. The rack of lamb was oddly tasteless. Chicken dish was dry and overcooked. I suspect everything was frozen and defrosted before prep. And, the service was poor at best. After sending the dish back, the waitress became very rude to us. She got no tip, something I haven't done in 30 years. They comped the halibut after having to ask. Went here for a celebration and were excited to try it. Unfortunately, every dish was bland and in aggregate, overpriced for the experience. The waiter was brief and cold with us. Nice ambiance, but maybe a little bit dark for some tastes. The pulled pork carnitas cigars were luke warm and under seasoned, the salsa, watery. The halibut wasn't even salted properly, and had a bland sauce and accompaniments. The duck breast was nicely cooked, but no contrast or spice otherwise to be found. Pretty nice cheese plate, and creme brulee was just fine, nothing special. While this is expensive dining, it wasn't fine dining. Go for a cocktail at the bar and spend your dinner money elsewhere. Never disappoints! The smoked salmon bruschetta was a delicious start! We enjoyed it with fabulous cocktails- the manhattan, martini's and lemon drops were on point. They have an urban bar with extensive list of wine and drinks. It's located in the historic J.P. Andrews building in downtown San Luis Obispo. Superb service with a warm welcoming atmosphere. Everyone here is very friendly and helpful. Their food is absolutely delicious and bursting with flavor. Surprisingly the duck dish was very moist and tender and the fresh berry cobbler with house made ice cream was insanely yummy! All the foods were savory and satisfying. My roommate my freshmen year dragged us here for her birthday last year and she ordered almost all the appetizers. It was so expensive but the food was good, I would've enjoyed it more if I was with my friends but the ambiance was nice. Took another visit down to the Central Coast to realize I never wrote my review of Koberl from my end of August visit. Summers in a college town before finals week can feel like a whole new world. Downtown is quieter even on a weekend and restaurants are mainly filled with local families. Experiencing elegant upscale Koberl Blue al fresco in Downtown SLO on a warm quiet Saturday evening was a whole new experience. It really did feel like the SLO/slow life. Although I was excited about the barrimundi special since the last time I had it was in Australia almost 20 years ago, it fell flat for me. Since it's a fish that can take on the flavors of its accompaniments, the lack of flavor in the string beans and potato just didn't do it justice. The appetizers however were a hit. Tuna Tartare, pulled pork cohibas that is made to look like a cigar, and the buffalo and butternut squash empanadas were all spot on in flavor so I am glad that we got 3 appetizers and only one entree. Our server was wonderful even explaining that cohibas means cigar which is why it's shaped like one. Just like him, that is my favorite item of the evening and could've used another order just for myself. read more

I often enjoy the bar area and have their appetizers there as they are great, but decided to have a proper dinner in the dining area for a birthday. We got there early and did enjoy a drink at the bar. My espresso martini was good. Mom stayed with non-alcoholic drink there. When we seated for dinner, we were promptly attended to by Vaughn, our server; who was great all evening. I switched to red wine (great wine list) and mom enjoyed their "Charming Manhattan" very much! We then shared an appetizer (a delicious smoked salmon and capers on bruschetta special), then we each decided on the beet & goat cheese salad. For the salad, I would prefer more greens and less beets but the flavor was excellent. I think mom's had more greens than mine so I stole some of hers. For the entree, they had a filet and lobster special which we decided to split as the lobster was two small tails. Both the filet and lobster were delicious! We ordered a creme brûlée for dessert to share. It came with fresh berries and was good. A very enjoyable evening with excellent service and good food! read more

Top notch bar service coupled with delicious food. Love the atmosphere and service we get every time we come here. Whether you want cocktails or wine the selection is amazing! This last trip we tried a few apps and split a burger. All of it was delicious, started out with the ahi tartar, followed it up with the buffalo squash empanadas with a side of salsa that topped any salsa verde I've had in years. Ahi was fresh and the chips tasty served with delicious guac. Went with one of the burgers highly recommended by the staff and it was delicious. I love the look and feel of Koberl. They have a terrific bar and some creative cocktails like the "Greenpoint". Sadly the food on our last visit was uneven. We started with what they called Manhattan clam chowder. I love this style of chowder, tomatoey and rich with tender clams. What they served was a peppery-hot broth with a few bits of tomato and chewy bits of clam and potatoes. It was awful, we couldn't eat this and told our server. She tried to explain that the chef was looking to expand the versions of this classic soup. She whisked it away and didn't charge us for the soup. The wedge salad was good. The wife had the pasta special, linguine and shrimp. The shrimp were tiny, close to bay shrimp, and zero flavor. The red sauce on the pasta was oddly herbal for me, my wife enjoyed it. For $38 they could have used some decent shrimp. I had salmon served on a bed of Israeli couscous. The fish was excellent, the couscous again had an odd herbal sauce but the bite of the pasta was fine. Our server was gracious and efficient. Koberl has a reputation for fine dining in SLO. I urge them to raise prices a bit and maintain the best ingredients. read more

They were definitely chef-driven with more interesting (and tasty) recipes and platings than we see at other establishments. We were lucky enough to get in on a Saturday night at the last minute. I think it's because this place is about a block away from the main strip, but really about 2 minutes of a walk away. Food and service were excellent! We had the mussels for an appetizer, the pork chop entree, scallop/shrimp entree and the sundae for dessert. Portions were perfect and all of the food was delicious. We have been to Koberl 4-5 times and every time the food and service has been excellent! They have a separate vegetarian menu that offers choices beyond a variety of pasta dishes - I'm so grateful! It's not often I have choice's especially choices that aren't limited to pasta!!! The sauces are delicious and the salads are fresh with just the right amount of dressing. My husband is an omnivore, he has throughly enjoyed the meat and fish selections as well. Leave room for dessert as the fruit cobbler is delicious! I was looking at fine dining restaurants while my husband and I visited San Luis Obispo, and booked Koberl at Blue for a Saturday night as it had great reviews. The reservation was easy to make via email. We found parking on the street nearby and made it there in time for our reservation at 6:30pm. The restaurant is in the main town area of San Luis Obispo. Once we arrived, we were seated immediately in their outdoor section. They also had indoor dining available at this time, and the indoor section was mostly full. We had the oysters and beef carpaccio to start. The beef carpaccio was excellent, with thinly sliced beef paired with parmigiano and parsley. These two appetizers were very refreshing. For main dishes, I had the pork chop, while my husband had the linguine. Compared to our appetizers, these were both really heavy, but comforting dishes. The pork chop was cooked in a tarragon sauce, while the linguine with veal came with a cream sauce. Both dishes were very flavorsome. We also had the creme brulee for dessert. Despite being busy, the food was served quickly, and everything was delicious. Service was friendly and prompt. Would recommend for an excellent meal in SLO. read more
