I have just found out that Coney Island Lunch will be changing hands and that Pete and Bob Ventura are retiring. Coney Island Lunch has been a mainstay in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area and truly is an iconic restaurant that has been in business about a hundred years. A century is a long time for any business and this humble little hot dog spot has fed generations. The service was always friendly and I love hot dogs, so this was always a good stop for me, as well as a stop that I looked forward to. There are plans to keep Coney Island Lunch, plus add on and develop the property (add apartments and the vacant lot next door). Change is inevitable, but it is important to embrace what helped define a community and Coney Island Lunch definitely helped define Scranton, Pennsylvania. read more

Coney Island Lunch is a pleasant surprise when walking around downtown Scranton. There are two Coney Island's in Scranton, this is the one located next to the Scranton Hobby Center. It is open only around the lunch hours, they do not serve breakfast or dinner. Interior has a lunch counter and several tables. Menu is simple: "Texas Style (mustard, onions, chili)" Burgers, Hot Dogs, French Fries, Soup, and a few other lunch items. Pie and Rice Pudding are available for dessert. Serves Pepsi products and several other beverages. Interior is decorated with sports memorabilia. Service was speedy and I got my items plain (Texas style is a little too adventurous for me). Burger was interesting as it's a flattened meatball, saltier than expected but had a lot of flavor. Fries were perfect. Blueberry Pie was average in my opinion. Coney Island Lunch is THE BEST. We were visiting friends in Scranton and my husband insisted on going here for hot dogs and their famous chili. I like plain hot dogs, so I ordered one and a plate of chili cheese fries. Honestly, hot dogs and sausages are not my favorite foods, but this hot dog was amazing. It was split lengthwise to increase the surface area that was exposed to the grill, maximizing the outer crispness. Accordingly, they served it on an over-sized bun, which allotted the perfect ratio of bread to meat. The chili cheese fries were incredible. The chili was a bean-less variety, and felt more like a sauce than a soup or stew. It had great flavor and I loved the cumin. The cheese sauce was your standard neon yellow whiz, which oozed on to the pile of fresh French fries. Lastly, the service was so friendly and welcoming. I now agree with my husband that no trip to Scranton is complete until you've dined at Coney Island Lunch. read more

I wrote a review a few years ago and confessed the only minor negative about this restaurant is the cook who doesn't believe in wearing gloves. Stopped in Scranton PA on the way to Columbus Ohio for a business trip. Coney Island Lunch was recommended by the cashier at the "Dunder Mifflin' kiosk in the Steamtown mall. Also the owner and his wife were there, and they seemed like really nice people. I got the texas weiner and my wife got the fish sandwich and soup. Everything was great and they make it right in front of you. I have a picture of the chef, holding about 4 hotdogs in his hand and up his arm, applying the chili sauce. It's clear that this is a local favorite and for good reason. It's a little confusing because there are two places in Scranton with "Coney Island" in the name and they are very close to eachother. I only tried this one. This one is right next door to the hobby shop (which is also very good). The only bad thing was that I forgot to leave a tip when I went up to the counter to pay!! Scranton is on the way to everything, so there's no excuse for not coming to Coney Island Lunch. If you love a greasy spoon in a city stuck in time, it's definitely worth the trip. We drove up on the way to Binghamton University, now every time I hear "Scranton" I think of The Lunch. It's way old school. The whole town is. I think I might love it there. It's not thriving, but it's getting along fine in 1955. The grill is exposed in the front for you to see when you enter, you feel like they are cooking just for you. The prices were so cheap and the people were so personal, we just kept on ordering more and more food. I could eat there forever. It's like the excitement of eating here metabolized the food just as I was eating it - what a great state of equilibrium! Their speciality is the Texas Weiner. Here is a description from the website: "We start with a Berk's All Beef Wiener. Sliced in half, but not all the way through, and grilled to perfection. Every action is performed in front of the customer, the way its always been. Then we serve it on a steamed National Bakery Roll (a local favorite). Went for lunch on a Wednesday with no preconceived expectations. Everyone in the group ordered two Texas dogs with everything, cheese and fries. Half the group also added sauerkraut! Everything arrived quickly and our hungry group set to work on our meals. It was tasty, messy and satisfying, I would not change a thing. It was kind of quiet and we spent the next half hour chatting with the staff, including the cook. All of the staff were very friendly and proud to work there and be part of the business. Delicious and tasty. I was staying just down the street at the Raddison and was looking for something local and inexpensive. A quick 5 minute walk later, I opened the door into Coney Island Lunch. A long lunch counter is overlooked by walls full of baseball memorabilia, looks like a lifetime of collecting. This looks like a locals joint. A couple customers came in while I was waiting and were greeted by name. The employees were friendly to this out-of-towner too though, and service was prompt. Charmingly retro feel overall. I ordered a Texas wiener, fries and a slice of pecan pie. If you're not familiar with their texas weiner, its about half the size of a hot dog. Wish I'd ordered two (or more!) they were so tasty. My fries were made fresh so they were super hot, and the portion was huge. Pecan pie was delicious- sometimes the taste of corn syrup is the only flavor a pie has, but this had a nice crispy layer of pecans, and a wonderful flaky crust. Sweet, and pecan-y. My whole lunch was under 9 bucks. I'll be back again next time I'm in Scranton. read more

You can also order it however else you want like catsup and onions only for example. However, the best thing about this place are their cheese fries! No seriously, these things are awesome. It's a big basket of fries with cheese sauce on top. It reminded me exactly of Boardwalk Fries which was an old little food court staple in Southern California malls. Traveling in the area for work, and had heard good things. I'm not much of a hot dog guy at all, and the only hot dogs I have eaten in twenty years are Coney Island style dogs. There is something to be said for the style of chili made in Scranton, PA (not sure if it's completely local to this area, but it is different than most others I've had). Had a disappointing time here! Ordered the fish filet and famous Texas wiener. The fish filet was just a breaded fish patty in a bun. Literally something that a 5 year old could make. No lettuce, no sauces, nothing! It was tasty and piping hot but I expected more. The Texas wiener I thought was pretty tasty. Best hot dog ever? Nooooooo but still good and cheap. My biggest complaint though was the fact that it took over 30 minutes to get my food. I don't understand what the hold up was and the waitress was kind enough to keep apologizing but in 30 minutes I could've gone to the store, bought the ingredients, and cooked this meal myself! We rolled into Coney Island with a group of 20, taking up all the seats at the counter and a couple of two top booths. The three person crew did their best to get us drinks and fill our orders. It took a while, but we knew that going in so that is not a slight against them. The waitresses were friendly which goes a long way! I had the texas wiener with cheese and a side of fries. The dog is shorter than average, split down the center, grilled on a flat top. It comes served on bun that looks to be made specifically for this dog (always a plus!) with small diced onions, chili and I went with the optional cheese. The cheese is that orange goo that comes from a can. It was frickin' amazing! My girfriend got the burger. It was ok, patty was shaped to fit the bun and came with chili and onions.
