This restaurant is the best! My father introduced me to Coney Island Lunch as a child. I continued to go there while attending the U of S and now bring my own family. The owners and staff are wonderful and the food is delicious. We also had an experience of placing a large order just before closing. Not a word was said that this might be inconvenient. The owner happily stated that this order helped him to clean up the grill! Other than the famous Texas weiners, I've also tried their fries and soup, both fresh and delicious. We always sat at the counter, they have been serving hot dogs in downtown Scranton since 1923, and are the original Coney Island. Super affordable, $2.5 per hot dog in 2016! We just moved to the Scranton area from Texas a couple of months ago. Was highly advised to try this place from a local. I'm not really sure what the hype is about. We got the Texas wiener with fries, and the chicken nuggets for the kids. I think they called it chicken frittles on the menu; or something like that. To me, the hot dogs, fries and cheese dip tasted like it was from the grocery store. The kids nuggets were more bread than meat. This spot to me would be a good after bar spot. #gooddrunkfood. There is another Coney Island right around the corner, so make sure you are going to the one you want to go to. Something to do with the kids of the original owner not getting along so they split into two. POSITIVES: - Very affordable. The locals seem to love this place. It's definitely cheap enough where it's worth bypassing these negative reviews to give it a try - Friendly staff (if you are paying with credit card, make sure you let them know if you want to tip. This is the original recipe, passed down after the generations, made by the SAME family. The other location, may be the original physical location, but it is NOT the original recipe. Passing through Scranton, I had to see what the fuss was about regarding the 2 Coney Islands across the street from each other. The other Coney Island chili is basically just ground beef. It doesn't taste like much. The chili at this location is a special and unique recipe with a thick consistency and tastes amazing. Try both for yourself and you'll see for yourself. Hot dogs okay. Chili is a thick tomatoey type sauce. If you are expecting loose meat type like I'm used to in NY then you might not like this as well. Prices are cheap. Owner seems a bit rude. Had a flat soda served to me and the nice young man was fixing it by throwing it out and pouring fresh. The owner called the kid out by saying "sounds like money going down the drain". CIL makes a very delicious weiner. I like the fact that they're a bit spicy and well seasoned. The slightly buttered and toasted bun doesn't hurt either. They also make a very nice spicy sausage and bean soup. Yes, it's a sleazy cafeteria like setting, but the place is clean, the waitress pretty and polite and the food is pretty good. Amazing server Lisa! We came here today because of a terrible disaster of service from Savory Mazza (you can see the full details of my review on them)! But after coming from such a terrible experience of service from them, it was so welcoming to have amazing service by our hostess, Lisa at Coney Island. Not only was her service amazing - being attentive, welcoming, and sweet to us even though we had a party of 12 - but the food was AMAZING! They had more customers in their restaurant and less employees, yet they were able to make it work and the total time from when we sat down, ate, and paid our check was all in 30 minutes flat! This place has excellent service (thanks again Lisa!), excellent food, and excellent prices - how can you beat that?!?! I was in Scranton for work for three days and was looking for a local place to eat and came upon this amazing place. It is a very small place and you can tell is a place where the locals go to because everyone in there knew each other and they were talking about the upcoming baseball season. I got the Texas Weiner and it was so tasty, it comes with fries that are to die for! I was so excited about this place when I left that I came back the day after for lunch again and got fries loaded with chili and cheese and it was just as good as the hot dog. And it is super cheap considering how amazing it is! Best place in Scranton! read more

Let me start by saying the fries are good, but they used dark beef gravy, but the cheese fries are REAL good. (Just a gravy preference, I guess... No Big Deal) There is no parking lot, but there is parking within a block. We found some just down an alleyway. Now, let's get to the chili dogs... The dogs are split and not on a "traditional" bun, but they had a good taste. I'd try my luck at this place again even though they're not exactly what I grew up with. Both were extremely well seasoned, though maybe the Weiner and chili combo was a tad too salty, but whatever. The chili con carne was very beefy. I usually go to the other Coney island on Cedar Ave., but it was very busy and I couldn't get a spot near the place, so I came to this location. I sat, the waitress took my order. She then gave my order to this guy (owner) stocking the freezer. He was picking up boxes off of the floor, cutting them open and placing the frozen products in the freezer. He grabbed my uncooked food and threw it on the grill. Then went back to stocking stuff. He stopped a few times to eat something, dipping it in ranch or something like it, licked his fingers and went back to work on the grill. After checking to make sure he got some more filth on my lunch he went to answer his cell phone, but dropped it on the floor. He quickly picked it up and had a little conversation. A few more bites of whatever he was eating them back to the grill to plate everything. Never once washing his hands or putting gloves on. He handed it to the waitress who brought it to me, whom by the way still never brought me my drink. I politely told them that I wouldn't eat it and that the cooks (owners) lack of hygiene was horrible. Now I know why the other Coney Island is always busy and they are expanding to other locations. This place is also visibly filthy and hasn't been touched in years. Do yourself a favor and go to the one on Cedar Ave. Or Dickson City. read more

Just a note to begin, there are two Coney Island restaurants within about 50 feet of each other. Not sure about the history of how that occurred or why, but this is the location where I go. There is a counter and some booths and tables. It is a neat place as there is a ton of baseball/sports/local memorabilia to check out. It is a nice little spot for lunch, and the Texas Weiners and Texas Cheeseburgers are very good. They have two soups per day as well and a number of pies for dessert. The fries are always hot and fresh. You can get cheese, gravy, or the chili sauce on them. Only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because a few times I have gone for lunch, I asked for cheese/no cheese on either a weiner or fries, but they didn't do so. Very good, cheap spot for lunch. Never paid more than $9 for a filling lunch. read more

My parents have been bringing me here since I was little and not much has changed. the same workers, the same regulars, the same fantastic food. The Texas cheeseburgers are my favorite, they're a little sloppy but oh so tasty, but everything here is good. The Texas whiners are great, along with their fries (get gravy). While the original opened in 1923 around the corner, the family moved to this spot in 1988 and continued the tradition of making the painfully simple and cheap yet exceptionally delicious Texas Weiner. Make no mistake, while there still exists a "Coney Island" on Cedar, this is now the original. I got there right after it opened and sat at the counter. After ordering two weiners and fries, I talked with the owner who was manning the grill and the waitress--both super friendly. Saw this place on Yelp and decided to make a detour thru Scranton on on way home to LI. This is the Cheers for hot dog lovers-friendly down-home place where the owner and waitress treat you like a regular. Texas weiners are hot and tasty & we were happy that the chili had no beans. We tried the fries w/ gravy and liked them better than with chili, very flavorful. They also serve regular no-frills dogs for the kids and unadventurous. Prices are crazy low and free parking at the mall garage across the street. Definitely worth the detour to Coney Island Lunch! read more

This restaurant has been one of my favorite since I was a child. I'm now 70 and living in Ga. Was raised in Scranton. My family went there every Sunday night after church. My niece, who still lives in Scranton, sent me a meal from Coney Island two weeks ago. I was so excited. I expected awesome food. Well that wasn't even close to the food we received. The sauce was terrible and nothing like I've had there at all. The T-shirt, that was included, was poor quality. I was very disappointed and when my niece asked how was everything, I couldn't lie to her because I didn't want her to spend that kind of money on food that wasn't up to the standards I've had at the restaurant.
