Once you step inside the store, the old photographs that evoke Mister Softee's history and the classic interior will make you feel as if you've traveled back in time. Looking at the photos displayed in the store, you can see that the truck was used in a scene from the movie, and that Mister Softee has been loved by many for a long time. Isn't it wonderful that parents and children can enjoy the same taste together for many years? This is a real, old-school New York Jewish deli and bakery, and I've barely scratched the surface. Let's start with the everything bagels. They're in another class. You really can't compare a good New York-style bagel to something from the grocery store or even most of the bagel shops around here. The chew is different. They're moist, flavorful, and absolutely loaded with everything seasoning. I've been back several times now just to pick up a dozen. I used to think grabbing the double pack of bagels at Costco for six bucks was good enough. Nope. I'm ruined now. These are too good. I'll gladly pay more and actually enjoy the bagel. Then there are the apple turnovers. Astonishing. And the dessert counter is ridiculous. It's overflowing with pastries and desserts, and everything looks like something you want to take home. The staff has also been amazing every time I've been in. And I'm really just getting started. There are blintzes, all the deli classics, and a whole menu I somehow ignored when I was younger. I said no cheese, got this odd smile from the older lady who runs the place. She proceeded to add Parmesan cheese into my sandwich (the sandwich doesn't even come with Parmesan), and I said "no Parmesan please" got the weird twisted smile again, before she adjusted the sandwich. I went to pay, grabbed my sandwich, and left. When I got home, it was clear that she brushed off some of the Parmesan with her hands instead of making a new sandwich because there was a bunch left on it. Needless to say I didn't eat the sandwich and will not be coming back. Looks like Jersey Mike will be seeing more of me. The ambience is awful, but that's not why I went there.
