Regarding recent experience at Conte's Bike Shop. On June 9, 2025 I bought (paid for) two bicycles for my wife and myself at Conte's bike shop in Virginia Beach. One of the bikes was in stock so I went back and picked it up the next day. The other bike was not in stock so it was ordered and I was told it would arrive in approximately one week. That week went by and I heard no word that the bike was in so after ten days I called to check on the status. The person I spoke to looked up the order to find out where the bike was. He said he could not locate the bike in the system but said that it had not been shipped yet. On June 28 I received a phone call from the salesman who originally sold me the bikes. He said that they don't know what's going on with the bike and he only saw that the order is pending. He then offered me two options other than waiting for the bike that had been paid for to show up. One option was that they would loan me a bike from their shop until the one that had been ordered came in. The second option was that they would give me a similar but newer model with a few more frills at 10% off of the list price which is $400.00 more than the price I paid for the two that we chose. I immediately drove to the store to look at the newer model bike and to make a decision on the offer. After seeing the alternative bike I determined that it was basically the same bike with a few extra frills (fenders and a taillight). I decided that this was not worth the extra money to me and that I would rather have the original bike that was already paid for and on presently on order. We were referred to Conte's bike shop by a former customer who spoke highly of the company and told us that their customer service was excellent. Having made my original purchase of two bikes based on this assumption I now regrettably feel that the customer service to this point is not all that I expected. I am currently waiting to hear back from the salesman after speaking with his superior. I will withhold final judgment until I hear back from him regarding other options. Upon further consideration, it seems unreasonable that after I paid for a bike and was told that it would be in the store within a week, it is now almost three weeks later and still no one can tell me its whereabouts or the time of arrival. read more

Don't recommend for repairs!!!!! They were supposed to fix my back tire and while yes they did they didn't put my gears back on correctly and now I'm unable to change them. When I took it back in to ask them to fix it they said well the tire is okay and we didn't do a service on the gears so you'll have to pay for it. while I understand that they didn't work on my gears they did have to take them off to replace the back tire. read more

I'm all for supporting local businesses but can't support a business that has ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY. I don't usually write reviews but this time I just had to seeing how the one I posted on google wasn't showing up at all even after 3 days of it being posted. Went in on the 15 of may to replace my rims which would involve cutting spokes, fitting, then tensioning them up and truing the wheel on my 26x4 ebike rims which is a job any shop should be able to do as it doesn't involve anything electrical. Ethan was the person who took them in and told me it would be around the 30th or 31st which I was okay with as I saw a few people working that day and they seemed really busy seeing how summer was around the corner. On the 20th a message was posted stating that the work had commenced and that Patrick was the mechanic per their app. I Waited 2 days after the message was posted to their app and asked about the status of the rims. Was told the same thing I was told when I dropped them off, that since the rims are identical the spokes could be reused then I was told they wouldn't know until the rims are swapped. On the 29th I decided to go to the shop and see what was the status on it. Walked in the shop and saw Andy and I believe it was Ethan in the back helping customers. I waited a bit and was asked how they could help me. I asked what was the status on the set of rims I had dropped off. I was told by Andy that it would be done tomorrow, the 30th of may. I said okay and walked away but returned because I had a burning question. As to why label a job as it started when in fact it did not start. So I returned and asked who I assume was Ethan, politely why the job was labeled as it had started. He showed me the computer where all the tickets were and was told that it was an accident and they clicked on the wrong thing as he showed me the screen where all the tickets were. I was nice and said no problem and if anything changes to let me know, I then left the shop. My problem with this is that it couldn't be further from the truth, if it were an accidental clicking they would have sent a quick reply to correct that mistake. The truth is it was done INTENTIONALLY to make it seem on paper that they started the job in their records. I saw the screen of all the tickets and someone had to scroll to find my ticket, click and open the ticket, scroll down where the options were at the bottom of the screen and pick a specific answer as there were a few. So someone decides to click on the ticket, submit work has started " ACCIDENTALLY" but not correct it IMMEDIATELY, how does that make any sense? Decided to then just pick the rims up on the 2nd of June and and go elsewhere. I Checked the app to make sure the ticket was closed but not before they added a nice flare to the ticket. They added that they did a minor repair on it ( which they didn't ) all they did was damage the bent rim by taking pliers to it which wasn't part of the job in the first place, rims sat for almost 3 weeks with NOTHING being done. That I took the new rims with me because I was supposedly going to return them...even though I STILL need them replaced and now have to wait another 2-3 weeks in another shop because they were not up to task in completing a job in a timely manner let alone be honest and upfront with me. If you want to avoid the headaches and need your bike/ebike repaired while also wanting an honest and straightforward service, look elsewhere. If your looking for a "real" bike shop this would be it for Virginia Beach in my opinion. However, Conte's now has several locations to serve its customers. It serves a higher end clientele due to the higher end price range of bikes. But the do have a price that can fit most customers and even have in house repairs which covers the warranty. The location off Laskin is a bit tricky with the frontage road, but you can easily navigate. Signage is great and there is adequate parking on the side. Conte's originally began operation in 1957 under the ownership of Charles R. Conte who was a machinist at the nearby Newport News Shipyard. It was always a family run business. From the time they were young Charles two sons were involved. Mr. Conte was a big believer in treating the customer right and they would return and tell their neighbor and friends. Conte's has now expanded not only in Hampton Roads, but NOVA and as far as Florida. It still remains a family business. I've had a half dozen experiences with the shop for repairs of my old German made road bike which is vintage. I recently began to look for a second off road bike and got a few ideas and even a test ride it outside the shop. The 3k+ price tag was is on the high end of my budget, but ultimately will be the one I purchase next month. They did a custom fit for me using GURU technology. Very cool stuff. The shop is a one stop shop for everything biking and includes accessories even for the car when traveling. The repair shop has done a fine job in the past and had turned the bike back over within a week. I would recommend any Conte's shop, but my experience has only been with Laskin. This shop also offers weekend group rides that begin from the store. read more

I want so much to like this place but they are consistently just rude and disappointing. We have easily spent over $10,000 on bikes here for our family over the past 20 years. The products and selection are great but the personal service is the pits and gets worse every year. They don't greet or acknowledge. One cashier was very rude to my autistic son, fussing at him for ringing a bike bell. This month, my husband stood around for 30 mins w/o even an acknowledgement. I hate that i have to give up feeling well-treated just to have a decent bike in VB. Update: Dropped about $3k on new cruisers at Fat Frogs in Red Mill and had amazing service. read more

If you want communication or accurate service estimates, I'd look elsewhere. Was quoted 7-10 days for service. I heard nothing after two weeks, and was told it would be done that day when I called. It wasn't. I called again after three weeks, same story. 28 days later, absolutely ZERO work done and the only thing the mechanic said was "he couldn't get parts." Zero communication, zero service. So I have been shopping for a new bike for my wife for awhile now, and finally took her in so she could pick it out as a birthday gift. Even though I have been in 4 or 5 times checking out different models and trying to get an idea of what I thought she would want I was never pressured by any of the sales staff. Finally on Saturday I kind of felt like I had done my homework had visited several of the local bike shops and had decided this is where we were going. I asked a few questions to get an idea of what the salesman thought I should get and was impressed he recommended what I consider a good middle of the road model. I thanked him and let him know the wife and I would be in Sunday so she could pick her own. Now usually this is when the sales person will encourage you to just go ahead and get it and we can exchange it later, but there was no high pressure sales he just said ok see you tomorrow. He had no way of knowing if I would really be back or not. Today my wife picked out her own bike. It was the same one I was thinking of getting the day before, but I felt better letting her make up her mind. I hope she enjoys it and if she makes riding a priority I plan to return to get myself one so we can enjoy time out together. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place! They were SLAMMED during quarantine and I could tell the staff was busy but they still treated me like royalty. Lance, Andrew, Donald and the rest of the staff worked hard to get my husband's bike fixed before he got home from deployment. His bike is a Japanese bike that is meaningful to him. I brought it to Conte's a disgusting rust bucket, and they cleaned it and fixed it up. I am currently stationed overseas and came back home around the end of March. We are new to the Virginia Beach area and I wanted to go see what bike shops were around. We are coming from San Diego so have been loyal to one bike shop there...so it was hard to go to a different one...so here we are at a new one. Andy, the service shop manager, was superb in taking care of problems with the new hitch for the bike rack I bought and explaining and demonstrating everything about the rack and new bike. Later on, he took care of fixing a problem with my saddle clamp and explaining the finer points of suspension posts and saddles, taking a good 1/2 hour of his time and wouldn't take any payment from me. Yesterday I stopped in at the Virginia Beach location because I needed professional advice and I wanted to check out their selection. I spoke with a sales person who basically said because of my weight I was limited to this single bike model. After a test ride which really made me want the bike he said this was the last bike that they had of this model. I stared at the bike for a few minutes trying to make sense in my head of the $389 price tag. After about 5 minutes they said they could take it down to $339. This sudden drop of price was suspicious. Since I was limited to this model I asked if I lost weight could I trade this bike in for another bike. He said yes they do take trades and they use bicycle Blue book to determine value. I told the sales person I really like the bike but I wanted a day to think about it and after making sure that salesperson who helped me would be there tomorrow I said that I'd be back tomorrow to see him. Later that evening I did the normal research that I do before any large purchase. I found out that the salesperson either lied or just didn't know the manufacturer. The salesperson said this bike would be on bicycle Blue book it is not. In fact bicycle Blue book doesn't have Kent bikes at all. He told me this bike was the only bike in the shop which could support 300 lbs but the manual which I looked at said 275 lbs max weight. The manufacturer of the bike had a newer and better (more wheel spokes 48 vs 36) model of the exact same bike listed for $249. Kohl's had a price of $233. Today I went into the store and there was three of that same bike there. The bike they said that they only that one of. One of the bikes even had had a huge dent in the rim and the price tags were all still $389. I waited patiently for 10 minutes for a sales associate. I asked to see the manual of that specific bike, an associate got it out for me and handed it to me. I confirmed with that particular manual for that particular bike that it said 275 lb Max weight. This is a safety issue and they lied to me about it. Another sales associate walked up to me about 5 minutes later and I explained to him my confusion with their price and the amount of spokes, how they said this was the last of their bike and there's two more today. He said that if you can buy it somewhere cheaper than do that. It was clear they didn't want my business. I really wanted to find a store that I could buy bikes for myself and for my kids. In my limited experience it seems they just are there to make a sale and they don't care about their customers safety. read more

When I found it, I couldn't get it installed so I came back to Conte's and in 5 minutes the repair department had it on and ready to roll. When I asked the cost, they said none. Doing the right thing. Several months ago, I brought 2 bikes into Conte's to get some minor repairs done. They were very busy but completed the repairs on the spot while I waited. I asked "how much" and the associate told me to come back when I really needed something. This week, I really needed something--a new bike--so I returned to the store. Curt was extremely helpful and I liked chatting with him. After listening to what I said I wanted, he told me what he thought I needed--not necessarily what I asked for. Took my bike in to get the derailer and brakes adjusted. They quoted me for a week. Two months later it was "fixed" and I paid $50. Brought it home and the derailer doesn't move out of 2nd gear.
