Beautiful property. Low quality wine. All of the wines had been open too long or had major winemaking flaws. When I question the gentleman about the off aromas of sherry and vinegar in the wine he gave me some bullshit answer on how wine should have those aromas. I wasn't going to argue, I just left. I visited a few wineries in Michigan yesterday for an annual girls outing. This is an annual trip and every year we wonder why we even bother visiting this joint. The folks working behind the counter were not friendly at all, they act they are doing us a favor by gracing us with their presence. They chatted up a storm with another couple, but pretty much ignored me and my friends. We left there with only purchasing a wine stopper, i'm actually mad i purchased anything at this joint. there are far better wineries and nicer people who appreciate your business! read more

Best winery in the area! Extremely friendly owner and great wine, loved Celeste and the blush wine and the blueberry was a nice different fruit wine. Learned a ton about Michigan wines and had a great time. This is a must visit winery if you are in the area or worth the trip if not! read more

We were driving from Detroit to Chicago and we saw sooo many sign of winery so we got curious and decided on trying one. We stop by Contessa and there were no ones there beside us but the owner made us feel welcome and was super nice and friendly. We sat down and each person try whatever they feel like drinking. All of the wines were too young for me personally but the highlight was the Cherry dessert wine because it was tasty and I can image how many food items that I can easily make w/so we grab 3 bottle. Overall we had a good time because one of our friend never try a wine tastering or ever want to a winery so that was cool. The owner was awesome and share about his wine knowledge. We're definitely a fan of Contessa Wine Cellars - we've been coming here for years and my wife LOVES their Bianco Bello and Celeste wines - in fact we walked out of here with four cases of wine this year - two Bianco Bello, one Celeste and one mix of Prediletto Blush and Lago Rosso. read more

Unlike some of the other reviews, we had a wonderful experience at Contessa on 10-18-19. Karen was absolutely amazing. Not only is she very knowledgeable due to many years of working at Contessa, but she was very fun. We loved her! The setting is gorgeous. After our tastings, we sat outside on the lovely deck drinking a glass of wine. The view and outdoor seating is the by far the best out of all the wineries we visited. I actually wandered in here after looking for Chocolate Garden (a bit further up the road). This was my first time through Michigan "wine country", and thanks to my low expectations I was very pleasantly surprised. The prices were reasonable (~$10/bottle) and they have a glorious patio. If I had more time, I would have loved to enjoy the great day outside on the deck. The Prediletto Blush fit the bill in satisfying my sweet tooth. read more

Fantastic winery. The setting is spectacular. Jaw dropping, really. The wines were some of the best we sampled that day. They have a bordeaux (can't recall the name) that will blow your mind. The woman pouring the wines was absolutely lovely. I appreciated that she took the time to educate us on her wines and what they'd pair nicely with. At no point did we feel rushed, even though they were pretty crowded. We bought a few bottles and I can't wait to crack them open. This winery is a must visit! read more

First timer at wine tasting and this was the first place I wanted to visit along the winery route! The building with it's multiple decks overlooking the orchard is gorgeous. We were greeted by 3 women who gave us a wine list and the rundown about the wines they have for tasting. My husband enjoys dry wines where I enjoy sweet. For $5.00 a person, you get to try 5 wines. We both enjoyed all of the ones we tried. They had a special dessert wine that was a Raspberry something flavor and had been fermenting for 10 years which was available for purchase for $39.99. That was our favorite, for $2.00 extra to taste, but a little too pricey to buy. We bought the Blueberry and Dolce Vita wines, a souvenir wine glass and a gel candle in a souvenir wine glass. We passed by a chocolate store on the way here, but decided to go to the left as we were leaving to visit the Chocolate Garden. They were on the Food Network a few times for their truffles, which are absolutely delicious, but a bit pricey. They pair really well with the dessert wines, just so you know! read more

We found this treasure on accident. Tony and Liz could not be more welcoming or friendly. We arrived just before closing and mentioned that Karma Vista was our next stop. Tony said that Karma Vista would be closing soon, and said he would stay open until we returned if we wanted to go to Karma Vista first. I couldn't believe this offer. Needless to say we never made it to Karma Vista. We were at Contessa far past closing, sampled some great wines and had a great time talking with Tony. The Dolce Vita and Celeste are my favorites as I prefer sweeter wines. I highly recommend Contessa. The scenery and hospitality can not be beat! read more

In the nicest way possible, the staff is better than their wine. Honestly, all the staff are very nice and accomodating and just flat out funny. I will ever appreciate them carrying our case of wine to the car b/c there was no way I was making it down the driveway without breaking a bottle or a leg. read more

My boyfriend and I came here last year for Valentine's Day because it was the only winery open on a very snowy day. The gentleman that was there (I think the owner) was very nice and we ended up spending the whole day there! Went here the other day and all I can say is, "Meh." The girl assisting us simply filled our glasses and didn't bother to tell us anything about the history of Contessa or the wine we were drinking. When I go wine tasting, I want to learn something, I just don't want to point to the menu and say, "This one next." Talk to me! Teach me about that wine! Give us a reason to lengthen our stay. We were there only a matter of minutes. Overall, the winery was beautiful. My husband and I recently explored Contessa on our anniversary trip. We came from Karma Vista Winery (which was awesome!) and were disappointed at the contrast of service and friendliness at Contessa. The outside of the building and back deck is beautiful! However, the inside of the winery is very small and feels crowded. The young man in charge that served us was not friendly either. He answered our questions about various wines and was obviously knowledgeable, but it was apparent that he was just doing his job. The wine was good overall, but we did not stay long simply because we did not feel as welcome as we had in other wineries. read more

I rate this 3 stars because the service was phenomenal. I am sure if you come during the summer months, you will get an opportunity to take advantage of their outdoor seating with vineyard views in the sunshine, while enjoying a cool glass of white wine. I happened to come on a rainy afternoon, and got stuck in the indoor section, with no seating or wine instruction. I really enjoyed the staff, but they need help in the wine making department. The reds were bottomless and almost sour. I tried every one and then had to move to the whites to get the taste out. Chardonnay tasted somewhat okay, but whites are never my preference. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here on a rainy Sunday. We were immediately greeted by a friendly gal behind the bar who was pouring samples for a small groups of ladies. We are cat lovers so we were instantly drawn to Nova, the resident cat. She jumped right up on a stool and let us pet her. We sampled 5 wines plus my boyfriend sampled a special black raspberry wine that was extra. While the black raspberry was pricey for us, it was something unique that we haven't seen before so we decided to buy a bottle of that as well as the Celeste. We also received a piece of great chocolate at the end of our sample. The chocolate place was nearby but we forgot to stop to get some before we left the area. It was pretty rainy and cold the day we stopped so we stayed inside at the bar, but there was a huge multi level deck that would be great in warmer weather! The inside was cozy and cute and the bathroom was very clean. My only complaint would be that I wish there were stools at the bar so we could have sat down and had a glass of wine (and played with cat). Overall we really enjoyed the wine and staff and look forward to visiting again when we are in the area! read more

I visited this winery this past January and I had an excellent experience. Since January is not a big vacation month in Michigan, we had the place practically all to ourselves. Tony is super friendly and passionate about the wines that he sells. He was soooo generous during our tasting. I loved that he also promoted local businesses by pairing his wines with products that you can find right in the area. We loved the Bianco Bello and Black Raspberry wine. I was actually very surprised by the fruit wines...usually I find them to be too sweet...almost like fruit juice but these wines all had a rich flavor and actually tasted like wine...not juice. My husband and I visited this winery along with another couple. We each left with a case of wine...Tony also threw in a couple of freebie wines since we bought so many. I found the quality of wine to be excellent considering how affordable they were. I hope to be back very soon! read more

My girlfriend and I were probably the only people crazy enough to make this trek through the snowy weather, but the service we received from Tony, the owner, made it well worth it. He gave us a generous tasting and chatted with us the whole time, teaching us the basics of wine making and wine tasting...we are novices, so he had to go slowly. I made a yelp account just to warn people not to go here. The owner Tony has left a bad taste in my mouth. Being a manager I would have never treated a customer the way he did. I still am in utter shock with how he treated people. There are so many more wonderful wineries around the area who have amazing customer service. I have been to a handful of wineries around here and I know I will never go back. Save the trip and don't go. Stay clear of tony, multiple groups had terrible service and could not believe how rude he was. If you want crappy service this is the place! read more

I've been here twice when picking or buying fruit at the nearby orchards. The tasting room is on a hill with multiple porches to sit outside on nice days. Very pleasant setting. Unfortunately, the wine is not very good. The reds I've tried there taste as if the (underripe) fruit was grown on very young vines. It was actually difficult to finish a whole glass. read more

We wandered in here on a rainy fall Saturday afternoon with children and we're pleasantly surprised by the nice quality and taste of several of their wines. The atmosphere of the facility was very pleasant and upscale for a small Southwest Michigan winery, and the staff was very nice and attentive to us in accomodating our outside seating etc..... with a very pleasant view of the vineyards and area, overall a very nice experience and we would definitely visit again. read more
