Karl and his team at Convectek installed a new Trane central A/C and furnace in our home in Los Altos. From start to finish, Karl and his team were knowledgeable, professional and reliable in both their product knowledge and installation of our equipment. Karl in particular is not your typical HVAC or general contractor. He has a polished and thoughtful approach to working with clients like me who have lots of questions and appreciate lots of data in a purchase decision like ours. He was very transparent and never pushy or hard selling. Even after our equipment was installed, he took the time to follow up and ensure that we were comfortable in our home given the heat wave that gripped the Bay Are this summer. WHAT A RIP OFF. BAD COMMUNICATION. DISHONEST BUSINESS PRACTICE. I called Convectek and talked with Joe a day or so before Thanksgiving. Our furnace was out and the weather not getting any warmer. I was told cost was $89 to diagnose the issue then parts and labor after that. The $89 was credited in the event we chose to have more work done. Sounded OK at the time. I'm kind of a do it yourself kind of guy so I took some measurements at the transformer and saw the 24V output at around 8V. So I replaced it. No luck. I ventured a guess at the control board. Replaced it. No luck. I booked an appt with Convectek. Two Latino gentlemen arrived on time - good start. They worked on the area of the furnace control board. After about 10 minutes, the lead asked if some parts were replaced. I said they were yesterday. He went on to tell me the entire board had to be rewired. I asked him where? He said the whole thing. I asked him to show me. He gestured around the control board. Does it sound like the old tune, Take me to the Cleaners? It felt that way about now... So I told him how much would it cost to rewire? He told me $280. I told him, if he rewires it and it doesn't fix it, he owes me $280 and told him to go ahead. They determined it was the transformer and asked me if I had the old one. Nope - out with recycling. So they left to get a new transformer. I called Joe and told him I did not want the guy back, he doesn't know what he's doing. Joe ended up talking me into letting the tech return. I regret that... We waited another 2 hours for him to return. No transformer with him. He proceeded to continue with the repair and spend maybe another 30 minutes. He told me at one point it wasn't the transformer. Really? In the end, we were charged $280 for a wire nut! The technician gave us some mumbo jumbo about parts and labor. The receipt noted, $280 for parts and labor. No parts... And Convectek must charge $280/hour. We will probably put a hold on the payment and ask for a detailed account of the transaction. I would not recommend this outfit. Their mode of operation seems intent to gouge rather than strike up a fair deal. read more

I am ready to drop $3-5K on the installation of a new gas furnace. Mine died after 30 years. I wanted to consider the Trane brand and get an estimate. Should have known better when it became clear that an answering/scheduling service was used at Convectek - and not direct contact with the owner or folks who know the product line. Dave at "Convectek" scheduled a time and emailed a confirmation. True, I had to call and change the time, twice in a matter of a half day, as another potential vendor had to cancel. No problem, Dave said. He confirmed the new time(s) in two emails. All seemed good. Then, I waited today from 1-3 pm for Convectek to come for the estimate. Called Dave at 2:30pm to ask if they were on time. Received no answer and got no call back. No one showed up, no one called to say they were late. When i called Dave at 3:15 pm, he said that the estimator had seen message #1 but not later messages. An Oops was offered... They wasted my afternoon and lost my trust on their first attempt to turn me into a customer. And, oh yes, they lost the $3,000 to 5,000 that they might have earned. read more

Simply the best. Karl and his crew installed a new heater and A/C at my house yesterday. They came on a Friday and removed the old heater and installed the new heater and A/C. The install was beautifully done. They were very positive, pleasant, efficient and very patient -- since I had a million questions. Karl worked with me on every detail and is extremely knowledgeable. Everything was left very neat and clean. The three technicians worked 6 hours straight without a break. I am so grateful that everything went very smooth. I will never go anywhere else for heating or A/C. I received excellent customer service... I truly believe they care about the customer and take pride in their work. Highly recommend. Professional, quality work with extra effort to fix my problem. When my furnace broke just before the first cold snap this year, I researched the issue and came up with two possible solutions. I called several repair companies, and only Convectek responded in a timely manner. I gave them my symptoms and what I thought was the problem, and they sent over a technician the next day. He was friendly and professional, although new at the repair side of the business. The technician went through the same steps as I, but with more sophisticated equipment, and came up with one of the two problems I had described. It required a part that he did not have, so he immediately arranged a follow-up appointment again for the next day. When he returned for the follow-up appointment, the part did not fix the issue (in fact, it put the furnace back in the same condition it had been before). The technician called in his boss, and they worked together to figure out the problem. It turned out to be the other issue I had described, and the first repair may not have been completely necessary. Knowing that I had to take two days off work so far, that my issue was still not resolved, and that they needed to special order a second part, Convectek offered me a choice; they could come back in a week to fix the problem for good and charge us only for the final visit and the second part (essentially giving us the first part and first two visits free), or they could install a new furnace at a cut-rate cost immediately. (For those of you thinking "bait-and-switch", I checked the price for a new furnace, and the price I was offered was fantastic). I opted to wait the week and get the existing furnace fixed. The technician came back as promised, installed the part, and fixed the furnace. A month later, and the furnace is still going fine. Was this a completely pain-free repair? No; but, Convectek worked diligently to get my problem fixed as soon as possible, with a minimum of interruption. They kept me informed at all times and delivered more than they promised. We can't expect that everything will go smoothly every time, but we can expect that people try their best to overcome obstacles. Convectek went the extra mile for me. ConvecTek followed the abatement company's removal the very next day with the duct replacement. Great job done by Karl and his crew. I had a new heater and A/C unit installed in my house. Karl told me about the option of relocating my heater into my attic, which would give us a new closet, and heating the house would be that much quieter!!! I was very excited about this idea. We moved forward and things are wonderful. I am very happy with my new A/C unit. We have already needed to use it. Have not used the heater yet, but I am sure that will be great, as well. We had asbestos-covered ductwork replaced and a new furnace and new AC unit installed. We had them install the new furnace in the attic, providing us with a new closet, something valuable in our smaller-sized house. They managed the abatement company taking out the asbestos and went to work doing their part the next day. Karl was a pleasure to work with as was everyone else involved. Karl and his team had done a great job in replacing a new AC and Heater unit for us. The thing I like about his team is they come back numerous times to follow up on the job and follow up on the City's inspection for the Permit. We are very happy with the job they did. read more

Our insurance company assigned them on our case over the weekend. We left them several messages and they did not return. We were without heater over a cold weekend. On Monday, the company did not bother returning our call first thing. We had to call them to find out about our case and they said they were out of town over the weekend. They were busy working on someone else's 'urgent' case on Monday even though my case was urgent as well. They kept saying they will show up by evening and fix everything. Around 4 in the evening, when most companies are about to close, they called the insurance company and told them to assign someone else to our case as they were too busy for the job. I had to wait for a few more days before another technician showed up. Two days later, the insurance company assigned this company again. Finally I gave up and hired someone directly to fix the heater. I paid out of pocket even though I had insurance, thanks to ConvecTek's lack of service. read more
