TL;DR: 4.5 stars coming in hot from someone who isn't a fast food person! Everything honestly tastes GOOD and is cheaper than you would expect for it. ARRIVAL: I've driven by Cook Out many times thinking it was actually more of a BBQ spot, but happy to have finally learned the delicious truth! Normally later in the night especially on weekends, the line gets long and looks slow moving. This location has 2 drive thru lanes, but i've only seen 1 in use around 6-7pm with no cars waiting. AMBIANCE: I've only done drive thru and the ambiance is a typical back of building feel accented with perfectly placed pieces of trash. MENU: There are options for various diets! I like that they offer sides you don't normally see at fast food chains. Well priced combos and a huge selection of milkshakes; they required their own menu panel. Chicken, burgers, and hot dogs. FOOD: So far I've been consistently getting a large tray which comes with 2 sides. I've really liked the double burger cheddar style which comes with bacon, cheese, and grilled onions. The bacon is cooked, but not to the point of crispy. The burger itself is not small nor perfectly shaped-I prefer this, it doesn't have the processed feel of a fast food burger from McD's or burger king. The hushpuppies are short, elongated shapes and were just a tiny bit dry once, but otherwise tasty. The white cheddar cheese bites are lightly fried and haphazardly shaped; not bad but I'll try some other sides before circling back. I usually never go for regular fries when there are other options, but I did not regret it here, they were crispy and even after finish the rest of the food and the fries got cold, they were still crispy and didn't taste overly processed or mushy! The amount of cheese bites did not seem comparable to the amount of fries though, just something to note. I'll definitely do a round of most of the sides. I don't remember anything specific about the chili dogs, but that means they weren't rubbery. THE CHILI THO, might the be the best you've ever had, but it's GOOD. I'd probably even get a bowl of it as a side alone! I always like to talk about grease and sluggishness with fast food and honestly, it's NOT greasy. Despite ordering a burger and two fried sides, not only do I not have greasy fingers, but I'm also not feeling gross and overly full and gross for a long time after. DRINKS: If you're a fan of cherry coke, go for the cheerwine. It's a cherry soda that I have fallen in love with. I've also tried the oreo shake, but as much as I love milkshakes, just didn't enjoy it. It's nice and thick in texture, but was a bit.....bland? After much pressure from my friends I finally tried this place. The hype is real, this place is great. It's true what they say for $5 you get a ton of food and it's good. The burger really does taste like a friend made it on their back yard grill. Oh, and the grilled onions that I got with my burger, they gave me a ton and they were really grilled not like in other fast food joints where they say they are but come out raw. You can order the items a la carte, but it's the better deal to order the "Cook-Out" tray. Pick one entree, two side items, and a drink for $4.99. If you want your drink to be a shake, add a dollar. The concept is cool - the tables in the dining area look like large picnic benches. I ordered a Cook-Out tray with the Big Double hamburger, a side of onion rings, a side of chicken nuggets, and a Oreo Mint shake. Wait time was slightly longer than the average fast food restaurant with a similar number of customers. For me the Cook-Out tray was a snack, so I had enough food, but for dinner I would have needed an extra item or two to be full. The Big Double was between small to medium sized; quality was what was expected from a $3 burger. The onion rings were not very crispy. My side of nuggets came with three pieces of chicken and, interestingly, two packages of sauce. I would prefer Wendy's nuggets for the same price, but they weren't bad. I have to say, I was amazed with how they transformed the interior. Very cool. However, I thought the benches were quite close to each other. I opted for one of the Cookout trays. Regular hamburger, 2 sides, and a beverage for $4.25. You can do various upgrades for additional cost. I upgraded my burger to the steak burger (includes A1 sauce and grilled onions). I also upgraded my beverage to a milkshake for $1 (great investment). My sides were fries and cole slaw. Note: you can also get Cheerwine! The burger looked rather sloppy. Service was a little slow, but we got served quickly after taking a little gamble on the secret fast pass route (the outside lane). Just when we thought our night couldn't get any better, a jolly street performer sprung in front of our car!! For the low low price of being pestered for $5, we were serenaded from his unreleased track list! Dinner AND a show?!!! As ordering novices here, we asked a lot of questions and the team member behind the counter answered all of them while handling my attempts at humor with a deadpan attitude. Mind you, she was not rude, and this place is efficient with food orders being called to the back while you are placing your orders. There may be a moment where one feels overwhelmed by the menu, but just read the reviews and tips here before your go for the first time, then sit back and enjoy your delicious tray of food. Highlight: the double burger with cheese---the meat tasted really good Funny moment: the shakes are still frozen because they are so busy making your food so fast that they don't blend the shakes for the usual 1 to 2 minutes; instead it's more like 30 seconds (so essentially you get a cup of mostly frozen ice cream). Lesson learned: ask for sauces from the back, otherwise you get packets of sauces which may leave you a little sad because they are not from the back. So my trip to the Ponce Cook Out was pleasant. I met the fam there for a quick lunch before heading north to see a movie. This location usually has steady traffic flowing through its doors and it's drive thru. Our food, milkshakes, burgers, fries, nuggets and quesadillas was hot and fresh. The food, as far as taste is concerned, is, well, fast food. It's not a five star restaurant, so my expectations for the "chef, wasn't high. That being said, it was pretty good fast food. The fam enjoyed it. I was pleased. As far as the decor in this location is concerned, it's the same as in every other CookOut across the southeast; it was decent.
