It was a pleasant but flawed experience at the Cool Moose Cafe. Having been recommended to try it by a friend, we stopped at the restaurant on our way North to Savannah. The entire staff is very friendly and accommodating. And the brisket grilled cheese I had was very tasty along with the garlic fries. My friend's veggie omelette, however, was bland and void of seasoning. She also ordered a side of bacon which never came. We stopped a waitress and informed her of the missing order, and she said she'd bring it right out. Still, the bacon never came. Instead, they simply brought our check. If your looking for a unique and cozy cafe this is the place to be. It has a great eclectic look and that New England touch. Other than how adorable the cool moose cafe appears, it's the full package. Their breakfast food is great, their service is great, and each item on the menu is creative in it's own...which made deciding very difficult! But one great attribute to this gem of a cafe is the coffee bar! All you can drink, and with flavors varying from French roast to wild mountain blueberry. I found this place online and naturally it found it's way to the top of my "must eat at" list. My boyfriend and I drove about 40 minutes just to have our Sunday brunch here, and it didn't fail to meet our expectations! I got the Portobello Breakfast and he ordered the Colombian Omelette. Then, of course, we couldn't resist trying the multigrain strawberry and white chocolate chip pancakes! If you like mushrooms then you'll love the portobello breakfast. It was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. My boyfriend said the Colombian omelette was great, a hearty omelette filled with juicy carnitas and veggies. Last but not least, the pancakes... We sat outside at one of four small tables, and it was perfect weather for Saturday mid-morning breakfast. Despite driving by Cool Moose often, we'd never stopped in. There are lots of fun places to eat breakfast in this area, so it's tough to try something new sometimes. Not a huge breakfast person, I ordered a side of corned beef hash, a side of grits and the home fries - red-skinned potatoes with pepper and seasoning. Everything was good, but nothing stood out. Boyfriend ordered a breakfast sandwich and wasn't overly impressed. I had a flavored coffee (you get it yourself, which is nice, so you can refill as you please and switch it up) - blueberry Green Mountain coffee, and it was good. This morning was my first visit to this cute little cafe. I was slightly confused about the proper way to go about seating (hint, it is seat yourself!) and the waitress was rather curt-not outright rude, but not very friendly, either. After getting the low-down on the seating, I asked for a coffee, to which she replied, "Get it yourself." She must have noticed the shocked look on my face because she then said, "Oh I guess you've never been here before, have you?" No, ma'am. No, I have not. Now aware of the coffee bar, I chose a mug and decided on the hazelnut coffee. It was delicious. I ordered a basic breakfast that included scrambled eggs, wheat toast, and bacon. This is not my first trip to Cool Moose but it's been a long time. I remember it being better than today's visit. The staff and the coffee were on point. I was a little disappointed in the food though. I ordered the Columbian Omelette that was supposed to contain pork carnitas, sauteed onion, tomatoes, black beans, avocado and monterey jack cheese. While the description sounds amazing, the actual thing was disappointing. It was very blanned and the amount of ingredients in the omelette was very scant. I'm not sure I had one whole black bean! I though pork carnitas was supposed to be very flavorful, seasoned shredded pork? This was cubed pieces of meat with no flavor. Also, the biscuit I got seemed to be of the frozen variety. What a wonderful, local, casual cafe. The line is out the door which is always a good sign in my book! I came here on a Sunday meeting a friend visiting from out of town. Pro tip: come a few minutes early put your name in to be seated within about 20 minutes at the peak busy time. For some reason I was thinking it was complementary but then realized it probably wasn't when I saw it on my bill at the end. No worries, it was great coffee and changes regularly to keep up with the spice of life! The food is fantastic and is a casual breakfast/brunch style. There is also a lunch menu but note that it is not available on Sundays as it is brunch only. Be sure to check the hours because the main focus is breakfast and lunch so they're not open late into the afternoon and closed Mondays. The food is fantastic and there is no lack of variety or flavor. The breakfast staples are there too. I tried the breakfast quesadilla which was scrambled eggs, spicy ghost jack cheese, onion, ham, bacon, sausage, and tomato, all topped with salsa, dollops of sour cream and guacamole! Great breakfast spot. A friend recommended that we go here. They have a self-serve coffee station with a variety of flavors. I had the Desayuno Costa Rica, which was egg and chorizo tacos with a side or rice and beans PLUS sweet plantains (my favorite). They had a nice variety of breakfast items, such as muffins and bagels. The morning glory muffin was a tasty sweet cinnamon bread and nuts combination. I would recommend trying it! The breakfast menu is huge and delicious, with make your own omelette options, simple breakfast sandwiches, waffles and French toast, fun eggs Benny combos, and several daily specials (today was a delicious looking egg and hash combo with avocado, asparagus, and pork belly bacon.) I ordered my usual breakfast favorite- the stuffed portobello cap with tomatoes and spinach- topped with two eggs over easy. Came with great home fries and toast. (The portions are wonderful.) Water cups were chipped, and mimosa glass was cracked. The bloody Mary was so thick you could eat it with a spoon, too much seasoning. I like how their coffee bar is self-serve so no waiting and you get it fixed exactly like you want. Needed something close to home for breakfast. First time patronizing the restaurant. I got The Cool Moose Breakfast with a substitute of French toast. I thought the sub was for the regular toast. However, it was to sub the pancakes. Regardless, it was delicious. The bacon, sausage, grits, and cheese eggs were also delectable. The toast was not though. We were walking around Riverside and needed something frozen to cool us down. 80° weather is no joke. We popped in around 10:30am and the place was hopping. Waitresses were flying from table to table like hummingbirds, but even with the craziness we were warmly greeted upon walking in. We sat at a table to look over the menu. Our waitress was sweet yet obviously frazzled. She'd say something, leave, come back, and say something else she had forgotten. It was a disjointed interaction to say the least. We settled on frozen coffees... to go. Here's where things went askew. It took us roughly 15 minutes to get our order. We watched as our waitress ran around like a chicken with her head cut off and patiently waited for the drinks. None of the other staff seemed as hectic as our girl did. It felt like she was having a vastly different day than everyone else. We almost walked out by the time we got our drinks. The sound of the blender finally firing off kept us in the cafe. She delivered the drinks with the same flustered energy and we quickly paid. This place looks nice with a solid menu and a ton of regulars. This place has no consistency whatsoever, when I first went it was new and exciting and I loved their unlimited coffee and the food was good however the last several times I went the food was cold and there have been nothing but problems. Normally I am a fan of cool moose, but I just need to call out that the transition to virtual dining has sent this restaurant down hill. Virtual dining just translates to less servers and no oversight. I feel bad for the servers they do have because they are stretched too thin trying to run the online ordering, virtual ordering, and full service portion of the store. This leaves everything falling by the wayside. What once was a good restaurant has gone downhill as a result of some cost-saving virtual scheme. The worst thing is remembering "yes you've been to this place before but you had an awful experience, AFTER you've already ordered"... well I'm an optimist and I like to think it will be better, but after this failed experience I will NOT be returning! My waitress brought out the teabag and hotwater and sugars. I had no spoon. I waited and waited and waited, then I used my knife cause who needs a spoon? In coffee shops they don't give you a spoon, they give you those dumb straw things (I guess thats why I didn't get one and of course I could've went in, but I had my 8 year old w/ me and we were outside). Our food finally came, my daughter and I both ordered french toast. It was pale and definitely nothing wonderful on site but right when I started to butter my french toast I looked down and saw what looked like a private hair! I was so disgusted I didn't want them to "remake" it. This may just be a personal grievance but the inside has a terrible smell. The bathrooms and the coffee stations are close together so when you walk closer to the bathroom the smell is HORRENDOUS but just walking in, the coffee smell doesn't smell like coffee...I just wouldn't go back! This is a local staple and you either love it or hate it and I guess you all know where I stand. What a hip spot for breakfast! The Riverside area seems to always impress me with their restaurants and Cool Moose was no exception. This isn't a large restaurant, but we only had to wait for about 10 minutes on a Sunday morning. The coffee is self serve and I must say that enjoying a cup of blueberry coffee (yes, blueberry) was an excellent way to spend my wait. Upon being seated we were excited to see that there was a 2 for 1 bloody mary and mimosa special. In the end the deal came out to $4 for either 2 mimosas or 2 bloody mary's. GREAT BARGAIN! The service was very good and our waitres was quite attentive although she had quite a few tables. Everyone enjoyed their food. I got the hash and it was a really nice blend of fall flavors including butternut squash, brussel sprouts, and carnitas. I obviously enjoyed my breakfast at Cool Moose and hope to be back to try some more of the menu (or perhaps lunch) in the future! read more
