Delicious!! Cool vibe and great food. Definitely a good environment for a relaxed time

Left this place a few hours ago and decided to go ahead and leave my thoughts now, a far cry from the Yelp review procrastination I'm usually prone to. I gotta get better at that. lol Cool Moose has five star potential. The food was wonderful! I decided to order the Swamp Thang Omelette which was part of their Specials menu. Being from Louisiana, I would've liked a little more andouille sausage in mine but the flavors were great nonetheless. My Daughter had a Kids Pancakes meal which came with three silver dollars. She ate two which allowed me to munch on the third and that was delightful as well. I was also able to try the regular and cheese grits (more on that in a bit) and they, too, passed the taste test. Now, the cons: Our server was just OK. I ordered regular grits. She brought me cheese grits but I didn't realize that until a second server came out to bring my Fiancé her food which included cheese grits. I asked the second lady if mine were cheese and she said yes then immediately asked if I preferred regular. I told her yes. She brought me some hot grits in less than two minutes then told me to go ahead and keep the cheese ones that were brought in error. That's a bonus as most restaurants tend to take incorrect items back to the kitchen. The second lady was also as sweet as Southern iced tea. While we were eating, a third lady was cleaning the table next to ours and asked if any of us needed anything else to drink. Spectacular but conversely, that had me contemplating why our waitress didn't ask. The grits matter ain't that big a deal cause they corrected it and I don't deduct points when a place makes a mistake but corrects it after they're made aware of the issue but the lack of drink attention was a bit of a problem. The third strike was how early the check was presented. Now, I love to eat out so I'm no stranger to getting a check prior to finishing the meal but I can't ever recall getting one with about two thirds of my food still on the plate. Again, not the hugest transgression but it pestered me. Lastly, I got two slices of bacon for $3. I asked our waitress if that was the standard or was I missing a slice and she said that's the way they do. I can NOT, in good conscience, give a place a perfect rating for two slices of bacon at $3. The bacon slut in me won't allow it. With some fine tuning, or maybe had we gotten a different waitress and another slice of bacon, Cool Moose Cafe would've gotten five stars. Regardless, they're definitely a place that I would visit again and actually look forward to seeing just how better they can be. read more

It has been almost a year since our last visit and was it ever a different experience. We have fallen in love again with Cool Moose. Since our last visit they have setup a hostess stand up front. We were greeted at the door, our name added to the list and advised it would be 10-15 minutes. We made a bee line for the bottomless coffee station. I always enjoy the blueberry and hubs loves the southern pecan (green mountain coffee). The table was ready exactly when they said. So far so good! Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, gave us some information, brought us waters and gave us time to browse. She checked on us at just the right time and guided me to the hash when I couldn't decide between three options. Husband ordered the burrito and we got a side for our 1 year old daughter. The food came out quickly considering it was packed. Everything was piping hot and cooked to perfection including the over easy eggs (amazing how often places mess up fried eggs). The hash was AMAZING, but how can it not be with slow-roasted corn beef brisket, sautéed roasted red potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, brussel sprouts, onions, garlic, and topped with cheese. I also managed to eat veggies at breakfast, a second win. The burrito was gigantic and my husband devoured it. Just went here for breakfast and it was so good! I got the fresh market eggs benedict and my boyfriend got the French toast. Since it was our first time we also got a complementary muffin to munch on while we waited for our food. The food was soooo good and the staff was super friendly and knew the menu well. The coffee bar was amazing as well, so may brew options. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the bathroom, needs a little updating. read more

The restaurant has an amazing concept, in which the employees are paid higher than minimum wage and provided insurance benefits. As such, they recommend that you don't feel obligated to tip. Well worth the short wait to get inside! My son is a black coffee snob and was blown away by the Americano. We commented we would love to live closer to try everything on their menu as each of our three dishes were perfect. His chicken/gravy/biscuit dish, my portebello with eggs and cheese grits, my other sons breakfast quesadilla.. it was all so perfect for any and everyone day. Service was fantastic and very quick. So I've been here a bunch of times, and I would give it a 5 but the last couple of times I've been hasn't been good. Idk if they switched up cooks or what, but the French toast are not as good as they used to be. My bf would order their breakfast burrito and it also has gone down in quality. And when I ordered scrambled eggs or over easy eggs... they were too runny... even tho I communicated it. The staff, same.. they used to be super cool, I would have cool mini convos bout the menu. But the late couple times I went...they were ok. The hostess didn't know if there was tables available, she said go check the other room to see if there's a table. Then she said I could sit down at a bench but then someone else came and was setting a table in front of me n gave me dirty looks. And our waitress... was not kind. Idk what happened to this place. After avoiding the dishes that sent me reeling in the past I have finally found the secret heavy hitter on this menu. The ultimate breakfast sandwich is amazing the bread is great and the coffee is still great. The past few times I have been there one of the owners is always there to captain the ship and always has the best customer service despite how busy they are. Overall her personality and great customer service really changed my mind based on previous experiences with her staff having lackluster service. Interesting concept for a restaurant with breakfast being the main focus. I would go back for breakfast as the staff is very friendly. I thought the food was ok. I had the Philly Cheesesteak which was just ok. The atmosphere was very nice with pictures on the wall and seating on the sidewalk. Really delicious food and super fast and friendly service in the neighborhood! We love being able to walk to this cafe not far from our house. If you get there early you won't have to wait too long for a table but if you get there 930 or 10 or after be patient! Once you are seated, service was great and we really enjoyed our eggs benedict on a garlic butter toasted muffin as well as omelet with fresh veggie ingredients and brie. Three words: Morning Glory Muffins (are awesome). Get there when they first open 7am (Come on! You'll be glad you did! That's not true; you'll start hating yourself around 11am). Their muffins are incredible right out of the oven, but you should still get them grilled. The breakfast dishes are simple and relatively inexpensive. I think vegans and gluten-intolerant people will have a tough time here. Do you like potatoes? I mean, really like potatoes; a pile of breakfast potatoes. Because the potatoes are pretty good. But that's all you're getting, I think. I don't eat meat or dairy, but I do eat eggs (i.e. liquid chickens. Take a minute and think about that), so I'm good to go. Haven't visited for about 2 years and unfortunately the service and food was definitely less than it once was. The place used to have charm due to the dog pictures and owner and manager/employee super friendly customer interaction. It appears most of this has disappeared and the food quality also seems to be a downgrade while paying more. Upon overhearing other patrons, on this visit, I heard similar conversations..... Coming into a bustling cafe on a Sunday morning, our expectations were met with delicious breakfast foods and hospitable service. The Mexican Benedict is my new favorite eggs benedict dish. What made this dish for me was the spicy chipotle hollandaise on top which went really well with the avocado. I would definitely come back just for this. I did feel we were waiting a little longer than usual. Also, my friend received hot coffee instead of ice coffee and had to ask for a cup of ice later. read more

The coffee here is delicious! And there are a lot of coffee choices too! I really liked having the option of self serve and getting my own cups - that allowed me to try different flavors. I had the Southern Duo and it was so good. The chicken breasts were not dry and the sausage gravy was really yummy; not too bland and not overly spicy. We use to love this place.... always great service and hot coffee.... BUT.. after not being here for awhile i could really taste the lack luster of the eggs... not sure if they always have used US FOOD eggs but the eggs are tasteless... in such a progressive neighbourhood you would think the would use farm fresh local eggs, especially since egg is the basic ingredient to so many of their recipes .... i withdrawal my first review and take back my statement about clean food.... This is one of my favorite breakfast places in Jax for multiple reasons. Cool vibes, great coffee, great food, great service. Now its not a huge place so if you visit during their busy times you may wait for 30 mins or more but I assure you it is worth the wait. Parking in Riverside is always a challenge but the walk if you have to park block or so up is nice and short if your not lucky enough to score a spot on the main street. There is also seating outside which is great on a nice day. Service is great they were really attentive considering how busy they are. Really great servers and they seem to work well together. They seem to have a great teamwork spirit. Don't be surprised to be assisted by another server if your server is busy they just jump in and get it done. I have a sever gluten sensitivity and I will say while they do not directly cater to GF customers on their menu there are some really great options. I had the Homemade Hash w/ Slow-roasted corn beef brisket, spicy ghost jack cheese, sautéed roasted red potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, brussel sprouts, onions and garlic. YuMMY!! I got the Grits which were made just right with shredded cheese on top. I also got slice tomatoes as a sub to the toast. A useful tip for my GFer's - While you are waiting go across the street to Southern Roots and grab a Gluten Free garlic biscuit to go and hold on to it for your meal. They have the best GF biscuits and Cool Moose doesn't offer GF bread so it's really getting the best of both. Awesome bottomless coffee with up to 5 flavors and 2 for 1 Mimosa's!! Its a small cafe across from the Walgreens on Park Ave. and its a hidden Riverside gem. Not as well known or popular as Bold Bean coffee but nonetheless they serve an exceptional cup of coffee. This cafe serves coffee so strong it turns anxiety over a day's work into pure existential terror. FOUR STARS! Order a hot chai tea latte with ample amounts of delicious foam and a artistically sprinkled cinnamon on top ---unsweetened of course so none of that diabetic coma inducing fake chai syrup from Starbucks-- which was a phenomenal surprise this afternoon as I waited for my seven month old pup to get a paw-dicure. Additionally pleasure yourself with one of their muffins served in halves with butter and toasted. Amazing balls. I love the character of Riverside and the stores in it. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere at Cool Moose, I love living in this part of town and being around people from a wide range of walks of life. But of course, every now and then you'll find a scene of humorousness at places like these. Hell hath no awkwardness like two hipsters fighting over the last open outlet in a cafe The waitresses are always polite and cordial. So please folks, tip your lovely Cool Moose muffin maven. Cool Moose is an amazing and unique café experience! The atmosphere is very cozy and laid back, also a great, quiet location in the riverside area! The food is phenomenal, they have various menu options for breakfast/lunch. Breakfast is one of my favorite times to go, I can never choose which option I want (the pancakes are super tasty) and the blueberry coffee is delicious! Lunch is tasty as well, good healthy food options, I usually do a soup/salad combo and I have always been satisfied! Every time I've been to Cool Moose I always have a great experience and am never disappointed, the service is good and the food always comes out fresh and good quality. I met up with a friend who lives in Riverside. We decided to dine here for lunch. They were very busy, and there were no tables inside, so we decided to grab the last table outside. The Waitress was very good, attentive, polite, & she checked on us often. I also observed there were a few customers who dined outside with their pets. I always love a "pet friendly" place. The food was excellent. The only drawback is the place could use more tables to handle the crowds, but there is no space for that. I would come back here again any day of the week. I always forget about Cool Moose when thinking about breakfast/brunch options on the weekend, so I am so glad that my friend selected it as out meet up place this past weekend b/c it had been far too long since my last visit. On this particular outing I had the Farmer's Market & Brie Omelette and it was DELICIOUS! I subbed out the tomatoes for Andouille Sausage and it really took it to the next level. Continuing my ongoing mission to find an establishment with the "bomb-diggety" corned beef hash breakfast as far as Jacksonville is concerned, I approached The Cool Moose with (I admit) some reluctance. I've scrolled through the reviews after all, which were mixed at best. Only one way to find out, right? Atmosphere: Woody. Wood tables, wood chairs, wood shelves, and a light woody fragrance wafting throughout. The walls and furniture are painted bright colors that capture the essence of spring/summer, and different knick-knacks from here and there (as well as moose dolls) are scattered about. They also have a self-serve coffee station, which is pretty cool as well. No need to flag somebody down for a refill here, just help yourself. Food: Ahem....although there were many breakfast items to choose from on the menu...I'm sure you can imagine my disappointment when corned beef hash wasn't among those listed. Maybe on the blackboard? Negative. It's only served on "special days," apparently, and obviously...this day was not one deemed special. But I was there and I was famished, so I settled for the breakfast burrito, which contained eggs, chorizo, onions, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and picante salsa. I'll say this much...It's BIG. Almost took up the entire plate. I couldn't finish it, as hungry as I was. As far as flavor it was pretty good, not phenomenal, maybe because it wasn't a burrito with "eclectic" or fancy ingredients, or maybe because my mind and appetite were in the market for something else. The service was friendly enough, they didn't ignore me, which is always a relief. And the wait for the food was minimal. The menu has a pretty good selection for breakfast and lunch, and I love the neighborhood! I think it would be worth it to see for yourself. They even have free Wi-Fi, and a bar area, which serves up a local brew on tap called "Shipwreck." P.S. Meh. Visited 9:30 on a Saturday morning. Quite busy. I honestly didn't feel this place. We dined outside to avoid the 20 minute wait to be seated inside since I had somewhere to be soon. I wasn't happy that our food was delivered to our table as we were inside grabbing coffee from the self serve area. There were no natural sugar options. I asked for a splash of almond milk... it was lumpy and frozen. I couldn't even enjoy my coffee. I ordered the breakfast portobello. I was good but lacked basic seasoning and no salt and pepper was available on the table. The mushroom was watery which means the veggies were probably drozenI just couldn't get into this place but since my date spoke highly of it, I'll try again probably on a week day for better results. I love brunch. Ask anyone, waffles and hot chocolate are my jam. After I saw this on the Jax Mom's Blog Brunch Bucket List and saw great reviews on Yelp... I had high expectations. A few friends suggested we go, so there we were on a Saturday late-morning-ish. It was busy, but not bad. They had a steady stream of people both in and out. You could get coffee while you waited. (A definite plus for most people.) I made the mistake of ordering a hot chocolate... It's instant, folks. I'd compare it to watered-down Swiss Miss. (Maybe the coffee was better, I don't know.) So disappointed! Menu selections were good; had a pretty good amount of items--the majority being egg-dishes. I'm more of a carb girl, so I went right to the pancakes, waffles and french toast section. Eh, the selections there were a little disappointing and the most exciting one was the chicken and waffles. A southern classic, right? Well... The next disappointment was the lack of real butter. I will say it again: THEY DO NOT HAVE REAL BUTTER. Apparently, they only have little packets of fake veggie-oil "butter." I asked. I dunno about you, but that's a huge let-down for me at what's supposed to be an amazing brunch place. So, maybe it was the lack-of-butter's fault, but the whole breakfast was so dry. The waffle tasted like dry cake in my mouth. Not even the small cup of syrup could fix that. And then the chicken... Maybe the oil was old? The fried chicken was definitely not the freshest fry job I've had. By a long shot. It wasn't bad... but it wasn't good either. Just, really disappointing. One thing that was excellent was the service. A+ and 5 stars for that. But the food is why you eat out, so I won't be eating here again. read more

This is a cute little restaurant in my neck of the woods good for breakfast, pastries, and a light lunch. I split the portabella mushroom omelette with sides and that was plenty for a light breakfast for two. The best part is the cool atmosphere and the all you can drink self-serve coffee area. Staff is extremely kind and helpful! And food is fantastic. For an unassuming and chill vibes cafe, they are pushing out some seriously good grub. The Fried Green Tomatoes Benedict was savoury and sweet with the perfect amount of salt thanks to the capers. Would highly recommend this special before it goes off the menu! The perfectly poached eggs when cut let their yolks cascade over the perfectly crunchy tomatoes and as you bite in you get a pleasant surprise with bacon they nestle between the tomatoes and bread. 10/10 read more

This place was packed today. Ended up eating at the bar as soon as we saw seating. Had their breakfast portobello for the first time today. It was actually good. A marinated, grilled, portobello cap, filled with a saute of onion, mushroom, spinach, tomato and garlic, topped with shaved parmesan and two eggs to order. Served with home fries and choice of toast. Hubs had the omelet special with pork, on their board. He raved about it too. Also had a blueberry and orange muffin on the grill. So delicious. The hubs had their fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookies. If you haven't been there, then you need to try this spot. Beware, they are busy. Especially Sundays. Ordered to go on a time when I couldn't stay and eat . I ordered a chai latte and a spinach salad with chicken. The servers were nice and prompt . They brought me my food to go in a matter of minutes . The chai latte was great the server even added whip cream to it ! ( that made me extra happy ) . The half salad was okay but it's the reason I gave 4 not 5 stars to my to go order . My spinach salad seemed all fresh quality . However the majority of my salad was red opinions in long pieces . I realize the salad ingredients did contain red onion but I did not want this many to the point that my car reeked of onions and all I wanted to do was throw it away due to such a strong odor . I'm not sure what went wrong but I do believe my salad had more onions then leaves or walnuts .. Not sure if I'll order this again or maybe I'll specify low on the onions . Nice fancy place. Love the set up. Very artistic and hipster place. Breakfast on Sunday was pretty busy. I had grilled portobello and eggs. It was delicious and healthy. Breakfast red potato was really good! There were bottomless coffee and tea area for a little over $2. Or you can also order by to go cup is cheaper if you aren't planning on sitting around and drink coffee all day. There were several coffee flavors there. Nice outside sitting area with doggy bowl. When I first started going to cool moose, it was the best place, and as my rose tinted glasses became less rose tinted, I realized this place is mediocre at best. It's a great place to bring out of towners or that coffee lover that you love. But it's not a place you can frequent. Every visit is loaded with problems and to go orders are a mess. The manager was beyond rude to my boyfriend when he called to tell them "hey my food spilled all over my car because of the to go boxes". Not worth the hassle. read more
