At no point after booking did I receive any notification--via email, phone, or otherwise that there was an issue with my reservation, payment, or ticket status. When attempting to check in for my flight approximately 24 hours prior to departure, I was blocked and instructed to contact customer service. Upon doing so, I was informed that my identity needed to be verified and was asked to submit a copy of my government-issued identification. I complied immediately and provided valid documentation that matched the booking details. After submission, I was informed without clear explanation that my identity could not be verified. I was then told that my original ticket could not be honored and that I would need to purchase a new ticket in order to travel. At that time, the fare for the same flight had increased by more than 400% compared to the original price. I was therefore placed in a position where I either had to pay a significantly inflated fare or forfeit my travel plans entirely. Flying on Copa is the worst experience you can have. I bought a ticket in business class and when we were in the air they told us that our seats were broken... When I complained to the flight attendant she said that I couldn't complain and that I was forbidden from talking about it with any of the staff. We were served economy class food and were very humiliated. I was in shock that my husband, who is my doctor, gave me medication to help me sleep during the 6-hour flight. I was surprised that when we landed the captain said that it would take a while for the passengers to get off the plane and up until then everything was fine. We continued to sit and I was sleepy and went back to sleep when airport security came in to remove my husband and I from the plane... I asked what the allegation was against me for having that treatment and they said that I slammed the bathroom door. I said that I hadn't even gone to the bathroom. I told the captain that he shouldn't have taken off knowing that the two seats were broken without telling us passengers. He told me that he was in charge of the plane and that next time I shouldn't fly with Copa because they don't have to give passengers any information they don't want. Outside the plane, we explained the situation to the airport manager. After checking the seats and having complaints about the pilot, they apologized and we were welcomed in Panama. When I got home, I contacted Copa to refund my ticket. They told me that the most they could give me was $150.00 in credit, which I could use if I made a mistake. I would never complain about Copa, and that we should apologize for the fine they received from the airport. As excited as I was about the trip, some things came up last minute that left me unable to go, and only 8 hours before my flight was to take off.
