Finally got to try out Copleands of New Orleans for lunch as it known to be the best restaurant for NOLA cuisine here in Jax. For drinks, we ordered the Frozen Crash and Burn served with 7 liquors and the Mardi Gras Punch served with Don Q. Coco Rum Both were very good and refreshing. For appetizers, we had a dozen Grilled Oysters, it was delicious, though smaller in size than we expected and it paired well with the Gumbo bowl. We shared the Shrimp Tasso Plate (Since 1983!) that comes with Gulf Shrimp, parmesan cheese, cream sauce and bow tie pasta-it was very creamy and tasty. Room for dessert? Twice now, I have ordered the corn crab bisque and both times there was lots of corn, but there was not much as far as the crab for what you pay for it. You would think they could put a little bit more crab in it. I was very disappointed because all I could taste was Crab flavor, and lots of corn that was a little on the tough side. YUM!!! Was having a hard time finding a dinner spot for a Saturday night and a big group, but Copeland's only had a 15 minute wait! And I'm so glad we didn't pass up this place. The hostess was full of energy and a great uplifting spirit in the restaurant. There was also a fun guitarist going around to tables. Our waiter was also great, super funny and charismatic. As for the food and drinks, I had the Sangria ($8.99) which was super yummy. I also had the Steak Labouchere ($22.99) which was recommend by the waiter and I'm so glad I tried it! It was incredible. The homemade sauce was so taste and the steak was perfectly cooked. I still think about that meal and want to eat it again and again! Others who got the same thing said the same. The Spicy Herb Fried Chicken ($16.99) was also ordered and really good, plus a ton of food. The Garlic Sweet Potato Fries were also yummy but didn't have much of the garlic sauce on them. The Penthouse Salad ($11.49) was good but the biscuits (came on the side of most of our meals) really stole the show - amazinggggg! I had high expectations as this place was recommended by a friend. The wings were pretty good as catfish, but the sides left a lot to be desired as well as the pasta and crabcakes were not very edible. Service was "OK " It was our servers birthday and she had a crown and other birthday accessories as well as cash pinned on herself, and I felt like she was asking for more because it was her birthday. Found myself her for a 2nd night in a row. Last night I had the fried seafood dinner and it was excellent. Very generous portion the could easily be split for two. Spice level was on par with with I expect in cajun food. Tonight I tried the crab stuffed catfish. Generous portion, same perfect spice subtlety, and complex Nola flavors. Absolutely delightful. Service was attentive and pleasant. Very relaxed vibe in the staff but very efficient and hard working. Good combo. The ambiance is New Orleans'ish. Very modern and clean with subtle details that could take you to Nola. Building has good acoustics, allowing normal conversation with friends. Again, very relaxed vibe. It's been years since I've been to Copeland's and was very impressed with the remodeling updates. It's very classy and nailed the New Orleans feel. The food was delicious, although if you're like me and a little adverse to spice, you'll need to be careful in your order. Of particular note, the biscuits are melt in your mouth delicious. The only complaint I have is that during "brunch" the people are packed in to the brim. The restaurant is clean and the space is efficient during non-brunch times. Not happy wit management Great host staff greeting was nice we sat at a table by the bar Andrew was our server he was soo nice and helpful he showed great knowledge of the menu. We had 2 drinks that where good nothing special and order apps and entrees food could have been hotter personaly but it was tasty. I went to the batroom and i guess the manger does not checl that because the log on the door had not been filled out and there was no paper towels. When i got back to the table we ordered take out it took forever to come out andrew being amazing noticed my frustration and apologized i told him it not his fault i asked if i could get 2 biscut while we waited 35 to 40 mins for out food but i guess the kitchen manager i think i heard someone call him papa must have said no. Thats crazy and why didnt the manager come and apologize and why not offer 2 biscuits to someone waiting soo long. So i could have been eating a biscut and forgot about the terrible wait but instead im writing this. So in conclusion Andrew and front of house great and friendly. Have you ever had something that you were craving and you just had to get it. For the last week I have been in the mood for shrimp etouffee. Normally I would make it myself (im a pretty good cook) but my wife does not like seafood in any way. Finally I remembered that Copelands was out here. It has been more than 10 years since I had Copelands, and let me say they did not let me down. They had non-seafood dishes for my wife and daughter and my shrimp etouffee. I went ti the bar for a drink I and the bartender gave me a "semi" washed glass as it was still wet and you could tell it wasn't wipes just dipped in soapy water and given to me without wiping it dry. Asked for a double shot of expensive whiskey and served I a wet glass was just tacky. Outside of me being a bourbon and whiskey snob, everything else was fine. New restaurants may come and go but the ones that consistently serve good food and offer exemplary service survive. That's why Copeland's on Southside is a place to seek out. It had been far too long that we came over to this area from Clay county and after one bite of the corn crab bisque, we knew we would be back and soon. The crab corn bisque had a delicious sweet cream base loaded with crab and corn. Two nice sized corn fritters served in the soup enhanced the experience. The seafood gumbo was spiced just right and had plenty of shrimp, crawfish, and green peppers. The rice was perfect in mediating the heat and spice. The two cup sizes of soup were equivalent to most other restaurants bowls. The catfish platter was a bit disappointing. It arrived cool and was actually catfish nuggets. The nuggets had a bit of an earthy flavor. Quite a familiar flavor to anyone who's had catfish nuggets. The onion strings were a nice addition and saved the dish. Our side was a loaded baked potato that was truly loaded. The grilled oysters, while pricey at $22 for a dozen were amazing. They were served on the half shell with Cajun butter and Parmesan Cheese and loaded with grilled flavors. The side of garlic bread enhanced the flavors. Attentive service helped by the late afternoon pre-din, cold beer, and specialty drinks made for a great experience. read more

Shoutout to our local community heroes at this venue! Today, Chase was our Copeland's ambassador. He was very personable, professional, and attentive. He personally went above and beyond the already high level of Copeland's that we always experience here. He noted that we loved the delicious gator bites that were on special today and he came back to inform us that they were actually going to be added onto the main menu. We were very happy to hear that. He made a fresh pot of their smooth and delicious coffee for me which was a blessing because I had medical tests today and I had been fasting. It was so nice and hot. Hubby and I both ordered the hot herbed chicken because we had been craving it for the last 2 weeks. We ordered our favorite sides: Mac & cheese, creamed spinach, and cheesy grits. These were all delicious accompaniments to the crunchtastic and masterfully prepared fried chicken. The definition of a southern comfort food. When our orders came out, we had noticed that one of our dishes was missing a breast piece and we had two big thighs instead. Chase had the manager verify the correctness of the pieces served. The manager confirmed and corrected it by having the kitchen prepare a fresh chicken breast for us. That was great communication skills and problem resolution from this entire staff! And our appreciation of this venue was fortified. We were able to also enjoy a perfectly decadent cheesecake with strawberry topping. The cheesecake wonderful creamy texture with a buttery nutty crust. The whipped cream and huge strawberries were just as wonderful. I did not even regret when Chase told me that they were out of my favorite carrot cake. The strawberries and whipped cream were so delicious that I asked if they would let me buy a just a dish of strawberries and whipped cream. And they did it! It was lovely to be able to enjoy this specially made treat. It was worth every penny. Chase even helped us sign up for the Copeland's app and earn points from our visit to use towards our future visits! It was fresh and the chicken came in a separate container and was cut into perfect little cubes. Very tasty! We wanted this place to be good! It's so close by, and good Cajun is hard to find. That being said, the food we got was pretty tasty. Initially we were going to have small Caesar salads and share the etoufee. But after we'd waited for several minutes, the manager came and told us there was no salad left in the restaurant. That's when I chose a bowl of shrimp and crawfish gumbo to come out with the etoufee. The gumbo was very flavorful, although a bit small for almost $10/bowl. We shared the crawfish etoufee, and the spice was noticeable but not overdone. Plenty of crawfish and a good ratio of rice. We both liked the taste. Probably would've been better if it were hot instead of barely warm, though. The biscuit was delicious, and I see that you can buy them a la carte. Duly noted, in case we come back. The reason for 2 stars was the total lack of service. Maybe they were short-staffed tonight. I know the one bartender had to handle all of the tables as well as the bar. It's unbelievable to us, however, that the dirty glassware and plates sat on the bar on all sides of us for the entire time we were there and we had to wait excessive amounts of time for any of the poor service we got. Never were offered water. No second beer. Just zero zing or pep in the step of everyone from management on down. Someone (manager...) should have been busting @$$ to get the bar area bussed. The place was not full. Short-staffed? Perhaps. Someone should've stepped up the service, all the way around. So the food has promise. The service needs a big upgrade. It's close by and has good HH specials, so we'll probably try again. Fingers crossed, folks...! read more

Had an early dinner and refreshing beverage here one afternoon. I started with the Lemon Drop which was really great then had the Eggplant Pirogue. It has layers of fried eggplant atop angel hair pasta with delicious cream sauce and seafood (shrimp and crab) a favorite of mine on the menu. My husband enjoyed an oyster Po Boy. We missed the seasonal lunch buffet which is currently being served 11-2pm. They also have a lovely weekend brunch. I had never eaten here before so I wasn't quite sure what to expect? However we did review the menu before going and we were excited about the food. They were pretty busy when we went there. We went late in the evening. I wanna say around 8 o'clock. However, that wait for the table wasn't long at all. I have to say our server was excellent. I don't remember her name and I'm gonna have to start getting their names when I do these reviews, but she was so friendly and so welcoming shout out to Copeland for hiring her! We advised her we had never been there before and she did do some recommendations ask where we liked what we did like and went from there. The food was good. We definitely came home with some doggy bags. I have to be honest, I was not a fan of their shrimp Alfredo. The drinks were decent and not really overpriced. But the atmosphere was nice it made you feel like you're down in Louisiana. I'm not sure if I would visit them again. I would probably have to go with an overall 6/10.
