After doing an online search nationwide for many months to find the perfect screen door that I would be proud to mount on my 112 year old house's front door, I found Coppa Woodworking. And they were practically in my own backyard. The products offered at Home Depot (and such) did not meet my standards, and the other, custom builders that I had found, were far, far away, and quite pricey. I was thrilled that I could actually see the facility, meet the employees, touch the product, not to mention, avoid shipping costs if I wanted. Very compelling. Besides offering beautiful products, Coppa had multiple happy reviews, so I reached out to one particularly articulate Yelper who, 10 years ago, had written a very enthusiastic review of his experience with them. The fate of a 10 year old wooden screen door should give me an idea if this was a good idea to pursue. Did he still feel that way? Indeed, he replied, he felt exactly the same as the day he wrote about his screen door. And he was seriously thinking about commissioning them for more. Good enough for me! One probing phone call later to Stephanie (a family member in charge of office duty), and further familiarizing myself with their website and products, I knew exactly I wanted: a paintable, wooden screen door embellished with Victorian spindles and scroll work. Best of all, they made models with a doggie door that would magnetically close yet looked indistinguishable from the other panels at the bottom. They also offered several types of upgraded screen materials, non-metalic, one of which was far more durable for pets and forgetful people who push on the screen. It was time for an in-person trip. It was a 45-mile drive. We arrived at an aging, family-run workshop hidden in an old, heavily industrial area in old San Pedro. Generations of hard working tradition! Exactly what I had hoped, my heart sang. The products were stunning. Fast forward to 4 weeks later. My door was ready for pick up. They also carried hardware that I could purchase separately. My thought was, after all these years in business, they would offer me sound advice on what would look good, and be made to last. They carried doorknobs and hinges in stock. And my baby was ready to bring home. I turned loose my most favorite handyman/painter on her to finish the job. He, too, was quite impressed with the workmanship. She is now a beautiful, functioning screen door with adjustable spring hinges to get her to snap shut, a sound that rings of nostalgia, and with a look that unquestionably adds charm to my entry. I am so pleased. And so is my 13 lb chihuahua who, with a couple nudges, learned quickly to love her new, little swinging door. It's a beautiful door. Our door is protected from direct weather by the front porch, so I finished it with Howard Sun Shield oil, which really brings out the warm glow of the mahogany. Instead, they recommended Coppa Woodworking. Mr. Coppa stopped what he was doing and examined my screen. Like a surgeon, he carefully disassembled it, then applied a new screen and reassembled it. We chatted during the process about woodworking, baseball and life in general. He showed off his shop filled with wooden screen doors and furniture he and his crew crafted. I wish I knew about him before I ordered a wood screen door from Los Alamitos. I paid over double for a door not close as nice as to what I could have bought from Coppa. The doors themselves are beautiful. The company's communication and customer service has been incredibly disappointing. Here's the saga of my doors, choose for yourself if its worth this much hassle: - No updates on the doors given, despite being 3+ weeks over the 6 week estimated construction time. Ok, not horrible, if that was the only lack of communication. - The hardware I received was not the correct color, so I called to ask the correct color be sent. I was told they decided to send me black because they didn't have any of the color I had ordered. (Hint, this is where you ask your customer what they want.) I requested a refund for the hinges, and found the correct color at my local hardware store. - Once the doors were ready for delivery, I was contacted by their delivery service to schedule delivery. It was scheduled for a Friday, between 10am and 4pm. I took that entire day - drove an hour to my home (remodeling means we couldn't stay there at the time), waited patiently from 9:30am until 4:30pm, calling the delivery service around 3:30 and 4pm given there'd been no word. No answer either time. Called Coppa. No answer. Emailed Coppa, no answer. Left around 4:30 and drove another hour. At 6:30 that evening - a full 2.5 hours after the delivery window they set, I was called by a driver saying they'd be there in 30 minutes. I had to tell them they couldn't deliver, as no one was available to accept the delivery. I tried calling the delivery company multiple times the next day to reschedule delivery, again, no answer. - Monday comes, still no word from either Coppa or the delivery service. I have to call them to find out they were planning to just show up Monday at some time. Luckily my contractor was able to accept the doors - but yes, I had to arrange that myself. - Still no word from Coppa, so I call them again and ask for a refund on the shipping (as, you know, I've waisted an entire day, driven a couple hours, paid road tolls to do that driving, and still had no doors to show for it). I was told they'd have to contact the delivery service and they'd get back to me. 3 weeks later, I've still not heard back from them about this. - Turns out the door with a dog door is missing the dog door locking hardware. I emailed and called Coppa over the course of nearly a week before someone bothered to respond. They've shipped the hardware, but whether they ship the correct color or decided to pick something else for me is yet to be seen. Finally got a response on the shipping charges, which no, Coppa will in no way take responsibility for, since 'they didn't promise a specific delivery' (except, they did...between 10 and 4). My biggest disappointment is with the complete and utter lack of communication. Had the delivery driver called to say they were running late, had Coppa actually tried to help, had ANY amount of communication happened, I wouldn't even be asking for a refund of the service they failed to provide. I was afraid they would not install since I live far, but Andy was here on time, took about 3 hours. You can order whatever you wish design wise then color then stain then screen. I choose the pet screen (only $10.00 more). I have 3 indoor cats and 1 dog. One of my cats stretches on it and no marks so far. I just have the basic black hardware that came with it. Recently I worked with a homeowner to renovate her porch, in New Hampshire. She had been looking for a Douglas Fir screen door of a particular thickness (1-1/8") with a particular style to match her v-groove beadboard ceiling. The thickness was to match a lockset she had purchased that required the extra 1/16" depth. Most screen doors are 1-1/16". She happened upon Coppa Woodworking's website, found that they offered the door with the options that she wanted, and promptly ordered the door. Upon receiving the door, she noticed that the door was screened using 1/4" nylon rope, stapled into a dado-groove at 1/2" intervals. She also noticed that one of the screens was misaligned. She asked my opinion of this construction detail. I am not a world traveler, but I have never seen nylon rope used as screening spline in a door. Certainly not in the harsh New England climate. I said "it is unusual, but I don't know everything. Maybe this typical for the west coast." She was not thrilled with the look of the rope (I can't blame her), and she was also not thrilled with the misaligned screen. This is where things get ridiculous. She called Coppa Woodworking. She was met with some of the most abusive and vitriolic conversation I have EVER borne witness too. She was told that unless she agreed to "cut the door in half and send a picture" she would not receive a refund. She was then told to have someone else rescreen it, and he would pay up to $150 toward the labor and materials for her carpenter (me) to do it - and that it would take no more than an hour. He told her that all carpenters in the northeast are incompetent and arrogant (interesting, considering the circumstances) and that nobody on the east coast has a clue about fine woodworking. He went on to inform her that east coast carpenters are overpaid. He went on to call me "inept" having never so much as heard my name. After this amusing conversation, the homeowner and I mutually devised a method (that would be to her liking) to re-screen the door using the traditional aluminum track-spline method seen in the east coast. It would require me to spend a few hours modifying the door. When she called to follow up about the $150 credit for this, she was flatly refused and hung up on. This is customer service at its worst. This story is coming from a carpenter who is reasonably accomplished and certainly not inept - and furthermore, has stood behind work in cases where the customer was not satisfied the first time around. The response by Coppa Woodworking was atrocious by any stretch of the imagination, and actually deserves zero stars. I would not recommend this company to anybody. BEYOND all of this, the construction of the door is only slightly above the quality you could expect from a mass-production outfit. Do not be fooled. If you want a somewhat decent custom door that is made to somewhat decent standards, feel free to buy one. Just pray to whatever god you favor that it comes the way you expected - because if it doesn't, you're up the creek. read more

Tried shopping for a wood screen door at Home Depressed and Lowe Expectations but everything was so flimsy and cheap. Tiny selection and some bad reviews said "keep looking, there are better doors out there..." When I started searching the web and ran across Coppa screen doors I knew I found the right place. Big selection of designs, you get to choose screen type, finished or unfinished, they carry hardware at really good prices. Once I picked a simple door my wife and I both liked I ordered online with hardware and unfinished. I'm a cheap DIY guy, wanted to save some bucks and stain and seal the wood myself. The prices for shop finished doors is not unreasonable so if you don't have the time, patience or skills, I would pay for that without hesitation. I'm kind of a wood finishing and custom painting geek around the house. I like that they offer either a 1-inch thick or 3/4-inch think screen door. I needed the 3/4" thick because it will clear my front door handleset without banging into the brass handle, plus it was a little less money and we don't have young kids banging in and out of the front door all day, so the fir is strong enough wood to give us years of service even with the thinner material. Good email communication, they confirmed everything with me, door arrived as promised and in excellent condition, zero shipping damage. Really impressed and happy with paying more for a better product and would definitely buy again. They have these great pine Adirondack chairs that I'd like to get next. read more

I don't get the negative reviews. I was looking for a screen door and had Screen Mobile come out. Turns out they only do aluminum doors and I wanted wood. They kindly recommended me to Coppa. I will say I was a little skeptical from the couple bad reviews, but I called and spoke to Rick and he was super helpful and explained all of my options and confirmed the rates. He even gave me a recommendation of a gentleman who installs the doors (Tim @ScreenPro 1 amazing too!). I did a little more research and called back to place my order.The lady who works there (sorry I forgot your name) was equally as nice and helpful. We even got to chatting about non-door stuff. Any way, the order and process was great. They said a painted door would take about 4 weeks to be finished as everything is custom made. I placed my order on January 25th and it was installed today (Feb. 9th). The door is perfect and exactly what I was looking for. Look past any negative comments and give them a call. A++++. Do not order a wood storm door from this company if you care about quality and do not wanted to called cheap and dishonest by the owner (really). Pay attention to the low reviews. They are accurate. Unfortunately I did not check Yelp before ordering. I paid $513 excluding shipping and hardware for a simple design combination storm and screen wood door. When it arrived the first thing I noticed was that the two glue joints in the lower panel were not tight. I could put my fingernail in them or a card stock index card and it would not fall out. Noticeable gaps on the front of the door. My friend, an well experienced finish carpenter, said it was an unprofessional, amateur job possibly done with dull tools creating tear outs and joints that were not planned or sanded true. Next I noticed that neither side edge of the door were sanded and were crudely finished at best. The wood is rough and the wood plugs are roughly cut off. Unfortunately I failed to read the "paint" section of their website stating they do not finish the edges of their doors. I called the company and attempted to have the door returned. The owner returned my call and was insulting, abusive, evasive, argumentative and more. This is the worse customer service experience I have ever encountered in decades. Insulting, slippery, evasive, and on. First he said I was stupid or cheap to order a Douglas Fir door since it is wood that is hard to work with and I should have ordered oak or mahogany. Literately I was a fool to do this. I ordered a DF door because it matched my front door, not because I was cheap. I could have paid for oak if I wanted it. If they can not work DF, they should not sell that species of door or they should warn customers when they order, that their product will be deficient. This was before the owner even asked what was wrong. He never asked what my concerns were, just went on the attack. Next he said I was probably trying to return the door because I made a mistake in measuring and it did not fit. In other words, lying and trying to cheat him. I did not. It fit. I can calling about production quality. He never really even stopped talking to listen to my concerns. Instead telling me about the Hollywood stars who buy his doors and his time in Vietnam. At one point he was yelling at me when I told him he should pay for the return shipping due to the defects in the doors. It was like a conversation the Trump - claims of "false news", telling me what was true was not, insulting me, trying to get my sympathy for the plight of the small business person anything to avoid talking about what was wrong with the door. He told me the problem was that they usually paint the doors and hide the defects and since I ordered a clear coat door, I could see the problems. He told me that obviously the door would need to be trimmed down on the sides to fit and work, meaning extra work for me or hiring an installation carpenter. I have never experienced that with any other wood door I bought and I have bought at least 10. He told me he does not hire women in his shop because they might file a harassment suit and cost him money. He complained about Chinese competition, California environmental regulations, and on and on, and talked about his age and being a multi-millionaire. Anything but talk about the actual issue at hand. I wasted at least 45 minutes in this call. More the fool I. During the course of the conversation he indirectly acknowledged that his shop messed up the glue joints, but I could never pin him down. He said no one in the shop would admit to making the mistake, as if I cared if they admitted it. He took NO responsibility for the quality of his product, none, while suggesting at least twice that the shop could have made a mistake. The essence is that once you pay for the door and have it delivered you are stuck. He will only accept a return if you pay for return shipping. If the door happens to be damaged while being returned, you will not get a refund and will have no door and no money and have paid for shipping both ways. Obvious not worth the risk. I regret ever placing an order with this firm. Several years ago I ordered a wood, custom storm/screen door from another company. It arrived in perfect condition and was finished on all sizes and fit. I just hung it and was done. Unfortunately I could not remember which company this was. A well made door can be manufactured, finished and fit. Their quality control does not exist. The owner is abusive and, as someone else accurately said, vitriolic. Finally he offered me a $100 refund. I reflected on it and realized I would get no where with this company and just needed to live with the door or engage in a prolonged debit card dispute. I took the money and have a $500+ door with obvious glue lines and mistakes that I have to finish and plane down to use. There are several other companies that make these doors. I ordered a screen about five years ago same size as I ordered a few weeks ago I went on the website order the screen prepaid which kind of sucks because you got to pay upfront the website said they take about three weeks so I waited three weeks called and she said oh it's not ready yet it could be another week or two so I called the following week which is previously to a holiday weekend on a Friday and a gentleman answered the phone and said oh nobody is there they're all gone for the weekend so I was like great and he just chuckled and said well you know it's a holiday weekend everybody leaves early. So the following Tuesday morning mid morning I received a call saying that the door was ready so I went down there had to double park because there's absolutely no parking at all for customers zero zilch dip so I went into this is the non-professional office where it was just massively and I don't you can't even describe it but it wasn't even an office for people to go in and get their stuff so that girl I told the girl I was there is it took her a few minutes because she wasn't ready for me coming even though she called and I told her I was coming I got the door home and lo and behold it was too big about a half inch on the bottom that they didn't shave off so I'm not going to take it back because it will probably be another two or three weeks before I get it back I'll just have my husband shave off my bottom although it was a good workmanship I would not recommend because they are very unprofessional when calling all around so don't go there read more

There are better places in the Los Angeles area. Best AVOID if possible. Agree with the review on 8/29/16: terrible customer service and poor attention to detail in craftsmanship. The doors are nice but they are constructed so that they will not work with all of the hardware sets sold by the company, and the company does not care and does not alert customers to this fact. The interior surface of the vertical stile on the side on which the door opens is not wide enough to accept the escutcheon (round piece with the lock) of the French latch set. In fact, after some additional research, it seems as though Coppa deliberately uses 3 3/8 inch vertical stiles and these will not work with the standard spacing of most widely available decorative French latch and similar handles. Those all require a hole drilled 1 3/4 inch from the outer edge of the stile, meaning that the escutcheon covers the rubber spine that supports the screen. This means that the door handle would need to be removed to access the screen for replacement or to place a glass window. Ridiculous, and easily solved by using appropriately sized vertical stiles that can accommodate standard hardware. Very disappointed after spending lots of money and receiving very poor customer service from the owner-operator himself. Won't even go into detail about that conversation. Just slippery as an eel. Wish we would have gone elsewhere. read more

My company is Baxter Five. We are a luxury vacation rental company in Echo Park, Los Angeles, CA. I found Coppa when researching options in wooden screen doors (we wanted something that would line up with the glass on our front doors). Though we considered purchasing thicker options in harder woods, we ended up purchasing 5 custom, unfinished, thin wooden screen doors in pine. Back then, if I remember correctly it was around $120 per door + maybe $20 for the custom option. It's now September of 2014. That purchase was made more than 7 years ago. Even though our painter wasn't as thorough as I had expected (completely missing the tops and bottoms of all doors leaving them exposed to termites and other wood destroying pests) The doors have held up extremely well! We haven't had to replace even one. My handymen did have to send some screws through the side of one of the doors that my contractor didn't install properly. Because the door frame for that door was made of metal, not wood. I guess it was a more challenging install. In any case he used the wrong type of screws to attach the hinges to the metal frame and then didn't even sink them in all the way. Of consequence, that door got ripped off by the wind on a day when it had been propped open. Even so, there was enough good wood left on the screendoor to manufacture a repair without much fuss (or expense). With this being the thinner door in weaker wood, that may have been a miracle. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase those same doors for any future buildings. My only regret was not originally building the doors with the 'cat scratch resistant screen', which may not have been an option back then. BTW when they say "Cat scratch resistant" They mean it! Our cat Boo is an indoor/outdoor Tom who has done some SERIOUS damage to our screen. Because of his love for the outdoors we can't trim his claws. Prior to replacing the screens, he would shred the screen - it was embarrassing. This would send us running to protect the screen. I now see the error in my ways. After the rescreening, Boo would attempt to scratch the screen and his poor nails would get caught in the mesh - producing no damage. I watched him suffer - thinking - he'll learn. He did. Now he just pounces on the wood part of the door. The door bounces against the door stop and we run to let him in. I wish I had known about Coppa's willingness to rescreen their doors. I recently took all 5 doors back to coppa to have them rescreened with the aforementioned AMAZING product. Again their rates were extremely reasonable - our doors are unique, but for most doors they only charge $15 per door for the 'cat scratch resistant screen'. My handy man would have charged me twice that just for his labor. The other type of screen might be even less - though, I wouldn't recommend it. Even if you don't have a cat - things happen. They offer same day service so did all 5 while I waited. read more

After scouring all local options I could find and coming up short, I contacted Coppa Woodworking last year about wooden screen doors for my 1920s Spanish-style house. Every interaction I had with their staff was excellent and helpful. The doors arrived on schedule, painted up really nicely and installed beautifully. It was great to be able to choose from their many designs and select a more weather-resistant wood that will stand up to the San Diego sun. None of these great options were available at local construction supply houses or big box stores. I did have my installer do the measurements just to make sure to avoid fit errors. Even he commented about the superior quality of these doors compared what is available locally and thanked me for letting him know about the company. read more

I was afraid I was going to have to replace the whole bank of Windows as many in our condo had for a few thousand dollars. However I found Coppa Woodworking, searching for a craftsman who might solve my problem. I took it in and Ciro, the owner started working on its peculiar construction. He is one of those people who are real pros at what they do, a joy to watch him doggedly problem solve this window. His shop manufactures doors and windows and I was prepared to pay for him to duplicate it if necessary. I had to leave and called the next day too get an idea of how long it might take and was told it would be done that afternoon and cost $ 50. I thought it would be 4 times that or more. Given the professional and speedy response, I thought that was ridiculously low so I insisted on paying $75. It's nice to know real craft people still exist. read more

i like the look of my new screen door but the finish work was kind of weak. Poor paint job, the top and bottom of screen shows bare wood. The door needs sanding, spackling and a better paint job. Kind of disappointed. read more

All I saw were shoddy doors at Lowes andHome Depot, and I could not find any attractive screen doors locally here in San Diego, California. I found Coppa online, and the customer service and helpfulness were terrific. I ordered a "stock" door they had in inventory. They sized it to the non-conformational sized door opening as well as primed it to preserve it for our beach location until we could get it painted. It was shipped as they promised and arrived in a timely manner. The prices are very sensible for what you are getting. Recommend. read more

We purchased a fir screen door with a cat flap. The door was fine but we have had trouble with the cat flap. It is difficult for a cat to get through the wooden flap without getting hit in the tail. Our cat finally figured out a way. HOWEVER, when we had our first rain (SF Bay Area), the cat flap swelled shut. Our contractor called Coppa and was told we shouldn't have bought a fir door with a cat flap---that this company manufactures, by the way. He was also given other excuses but no apology or any satisfaction. I would not buy from what is supposed to be a reputable company that does not back up its product. It is now December and our first rain was in October. The cat flap is stuck open and probably for the rest of the winter. read more

My new screen door is perfect. The paint job is great and the bronze screen is beautiful. I live out of state and had it shipped to my home. The local company that installed it had no problems with it - the size was just as ordered. If I could figure out how to send a photo, I would. read more

I have been restoring my 1903 Victorian since 2002. Ciro Coppa has been amazingly helpful and supportive all along the way. And I have asked for some pretty special stuff. I have his doors and screen doors on every exterior door in the house, and they are as beautiful as they day I got them. Highest quality work and materials. He is constantly experimenting with new ways to improve his products, and that impresses me greatly. His whole staff, right down to the shop dog are as helpful and friendly as can be. read more

Horrible customer service (abusive owner), misleading website, failure to sand and polyurethane completely. I ordered a screen door from them and paid to have it stained and polyurethaned. I received the door to find that the edges of the door (top, bottom, left and right) were stained, but never sanded and not polyurethaned. Oddly, they did stain them, even though there were obvious mill marks and the plugs hiding the screws were not flush with the doors. I called to discuss and they said that they don't do that. They justified it in a variety of ways: 1) They claimed that the website provided that information. There is a statement to that effect under the section describing PAINT (which I did not read, because I was not having done), but not the section describing STAIN. 2) They claimed that there's no reason polyurethane it because it is not visible. Which is odd, because, a) doors are made to open, so the edge is visible; and 2) they explicitly state on their website that failure to finish the edges will result in a shortened life for the door. 3) They claimed that the door was 99% perfect and that I was nitpicking. First off, they are wrong on the math and secondly, I specifically chose to do the staining and to buy their product because I didn't want to do 4 sandings, one staining and 3 coats of polyeurethane. (I had just finished doing all that over a week's time with two other screen doors I bought and installed.). The owner, (Cirro?) was belligerent and rarely allowed me to finish a sentence. He said there was not problem, refused to credit me the cost of the staining, refused to correct the problem and said that if I wanted to return it, I would have to pay shipping. All communication broke down and I let him know that I would be cancel payment and review him accordingly, he took to calling me an extortionist. If you do a search for coppa woodworking reviews, you will see other people who were treated similarly. Not surprisingly (in retrospect, at least), their website does not provide the ability to give a review. UPDATE: I got ready to sand, stain and polyurethane the door and took a more critical eye to fit. Just realized that the door is bowed inward in the middle (3 of the four corners are not true). 29 5/8" wide at top and bottom, 29 1/2" at the middle. I'll have to plane the ends down on each side, which isn't a huge amount of additional work since I have to sand and finish already, but not appreciated. read more

Pay no attention to the star rating. It cannot reflect my experience with Coppa Woodworking. This review is intended as a warning. This company makes good, quality wood screens most of the time. Be forewarned, however, that they will not correct mistakes and have some crazy-bad customer service. My first order with them went very well. I recommended Coppa to several others. But some additional replacement screens I ordered came in too large. They were all 1/8" wider and slightly taller than my order and would not fit in place. I called and asked what to do and was told to send them back. I did. After a week of silence, I called and spoke to the owner, Ciro. I thought they could just shave the wood down on either side and return them. But Ciro angrily accused me of ordering the wrong size. When I pointed out that the screens were larger than my order, he shouted that I must have measured the screens and tried to install them with the packaging still on. Of course I didn't do that. Then he screamed at me that I was playing some kind of game and trying to con them. He kept me on the phone for at least 10 minutes, screaming for most of the time. It was so bizarre that I am still shaken. He did send the screens back to me and now I am paying someone local to shave down the screen so they will fit. (+$200) So here is my warning. Be prepared to accept whatever they send or, apparently, use a professional installer to make their work fit correctly. read more
