One-Liner: Blew away my expectations - was expecting a typical run of the mill dinner but the food was above and beyond. Take a chance to check-out this place if you're ever in Asheville! Context: I was on a roadtrip a few weeks ago and stopped in Asheville to checkout the downtown and brewery scene. Although Copper Crown is a bit out of the way, it's definitely worth going to! I wasn't expecting anything too crazy but they exceeded my expectations as all of the food was absolutely delicious at a pretty reasonable cost! This food in a big metropolitan city would be 25% more easily. The Copper Crown is an unassuming little place that has excellent food. They switch up the menu often to offer unique and refreshed dishes from time to time. I had the salmon which was cooked to perfection, (that's very important to me), and my friend had the scallops. He had a pinot noir with his and I had a very nice Albariño. Stuck inside by a downpour, we continued with dessert: he had a chocolate mousse and I had a basil flan with honey and crumbles. Both were amazingly delicious. I have mixed feelings about Copper Crown.. I made reservations via OpenTable for Boyfriend's 30th Birthday only to learn that it was later cancelled, we raced out there to see if they could fit us in after calling but had no luck. But, since I really liked Zambra I decided to give this place another shot. We did learn that they have been having issues with their reservations lately and have been working on a new system. Service was awkward, not a fan. We waited around for a few minutes after being seated and were trying to figure out who our server was. She finally arrived later to ask about food/drinks instead of introducing herself. Boyfriend and I decided to split a few small plates.. which did not come out at a consistent speed. MAKE RESERVATIONS! We did and ate on the patio. Beautiful night to look at the parking lot in the front or, luckily, the woods on the western side. Service was excellent, with all servers working as a team. Had the scallops and the flank steak. Small and large dishes are specified on the menu. For us normal sized people, a drink and a couple of small dishes shared was a full meal. Food was prepared quite nicely and tasted great! It is a cozy place to eat and well worth the visit. Crispy brussel sprouts were outstanding. Cocktails. They had some neat cocktails...I had the "selfie with santa." Atmosphere is casual upscale. Cons: We got there early, and were told we could sit in the bar. Bartender did not start serving for 20 minutes. Bartender was a bit twitchy. We were told we'd have to sit in the bar, because there were no tables available. The restaurant sat empty for an hour. We and one other table were the only patrons. This place was phenomenal. We were visiting from Virginia Beach and ventured out this way specifically because of the reviews. My husband and I shared the romaine salad with pickled vegetables and corn nuts (this all sounded weird to me but I'm so glad we tried it!) followed by one each of the lo-fi and hi-fi burgers. The lo-fi, which I ordered, was truly one of the best burgers I have ever had. It could easily hold it's own next to some national favorites I've experienced. The meat is flavored so perfectly, and really stands out on this simply topped burger. The fries were also great! Every dish on their menu looked great, to be honest, and the service was prompt and incredibly friendly. This will definitely be on our list for any return trip. read more

We were in Asheville to tour the Biltmore and our first night there we wanted a good dinner - this was not the place to come. It had good reviews so we decided to try it - we were very disappointed. The menu was limited and they did not allow any substitutions. I wanted the trout but did not want the pairings they had, so I settled on the blacked catfish with Jambalaya and collards. My wife tried the Hanger Steak and was very disappointed at how tuff the meat was. The service was exceptional, they had a glitch with their system and the orders were not getting back to the kitchen, so we waited almost an hour for our food - they brought us some appetizers and also gave us dessert. The worse part though was the "heated" patio - they had a little space heater at the end of the patio that might of heated a small space - the did provide blankets, that my wife put over her legs, but she was still cold. Needless to say, we will not be back on our next visit. read more

Omg the food is SO good!!! We ate so much because we couldn't help it. Really felt like we were getting the Asheville foodie experience. This place is a little off the beaten path, not in downtown Asheville, but it is sooooo worth it, plus there is ample parking in the parking lot AND I felt safer dining in their outdoor area as opposed to feeling cramped inside (which is what some of the popular downtown restaurants looked like). The place is just a smidge hard to find because they don't have a big sign on the side of the road but we eventually found it just fine! I cannot recommend this place enough. After one bite into my scallop, I smiled. It was that good. It paired perfect with the sweet potato purée and sweet soy glaze over fried plantains. I also ordered a Pisgah pale ale. It was good but hoppier that I was expecting. Lastly the lo-do burger was just an overall flavorful, juicy, and good burger. I could taste the patty had spices in or on it, so bonus points for that. This restaurant really thought of the details. We sat outside and our rainy view was especially pleasant. Why 5 stars? Because this is why I love Yelping. --- --- --- I cannot find the words to justify how much I loved my visit to Copper Crown. If I could custom design a dining experience, I would not do as good of a job as Copper Crown did. I love shrimp po boys, but recently had one that left a bad taste in my mouth. That's why when I saw one on the menu here, I was excited to cleanse myself of the sub-par experience I'd had elsewhere. I think I can officially call Chef Adam's a healer of sick tongues. My po boy was perfect. Where Copper Crown really shined, however, was with their sides. I ordered the brussels sprouts, while Asheville's mayor, Kipper, ordered practically ever other side item on the menu. It turned out that my instincts were right - those brussels sprouts were insane. If I could order them freeze dried and mailed to my house, I'd pay all the shipping charges in the land. Of Kipper's sides, my favorites were the red beans and rice, and the spicy buffalo green tomatoes. To be honest, I never would have ordered the red beans and rice, but that the best version of it that I've ever tasted. On a return trip, I wouldn't hesitate to order it myself. And I would definitely give both the regular, and sweet potato fries a shot! As wonderful as the food was, I may have enjoyed the interior design of Copper Crown even more so. We've all seen the commonalities of restaurants going for the modern look where everything is dark-stained wood. And listen, I love dark-stained wood - I have a ton of it in my house. But what I appreciate about the design here is that they took a ton of really great modern elements, but put their own twist on it. We selected Copper Crown because they allowed for dogs to visit. We looked at the menu online and liked the variety. What we did not anticipate was the kindness of the staff from hostess to servers. We called on after arriving on Wednesday at almost 7 pm. They had one table available at 7:30, and we grabbed it. We shared the tapas-type small plates: Brussels sprouts, Buffalo fried green tomatoes, barbecue shrimp, and scallops. They were all delicious! The pot de creme as dessert was decadent and perfect! Recently ate here for the first time, and overall the experience was very good, with just a few misses. First miss, we were seated at a tiny table right by the door and next to the hostess stand. There was virtually no privacy and the table was so small we could hardly fit our plates. Second miss, the hostess didn't seem too excited. She just pointed us to our table without actually taking us there. We didn't get a "Welcome to Copper Crown" or anything else, other than "That's your table". Didn't think much about it since we were seated right next to her, but I noticed she did this for at least two other parties, one of which was seated outside. Not a huge deal, but it would be nicer to have a bit more of a welcoming reception. Aside from that, the service was great. Servers were very helpful and knowledgable. On to the food: The kale salad is awesome. Not very sexy I guess, but the flavors were spot on. The beef cheeks were superb. Full of flavor and super tender, melt in your mouth. Highly recommended. The scallops were cooked perfectly, but we weren't fans of the accompanying carrot puree and citrus flavors. They just didn't work well with the scallops in our opinion. Of course, it could be just us as others may like that combination, but we rate this a near miss. The crawfish risotto sounded awesome, and was the dish I was most anticipating. Unfortunately it came up short--it was bland and somewhat watery, and just not very flavorful. Perhaps some additional seasoning (Cajun spices perhaps?) or more crawfish would help, but as it is I do not recommend it. That said, overall our experience was good and we will go back to try other dishes, and probably get more kale salad and beef cheeks! I do encourage you to give this place a try, despite the few drawbacks. No hassle with downtown crowds and parking, and overall the food is very good. read more

Four of us went to Copper Crown for tapas and it was amazing. The craft cocktails were very good and balanced. The menu has a nice selection of different tapas that we all enjoyed. Everything is done with care and the presentation is beautiful. Our server was very attentive and food came out at the perfect pace. And the ambiance of the outdoor deck was perfect. Do not judge this spot by the exterior and location. It was amazing!! The food was all beautifully presented and delicious, every single dish. Would order the gnocchi and pork cheeks again in a heart beat but also really loved the scallops, which were perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with corn and peppers. ::UPDATE:: After having a one-star lunch experience here, I decided to go back to Copper Crown for dinner because I've heard many say that the dinner is great and I believe in second chances. I'll start with the positives of my dinner experience. When we arrived at the restaurant at 7pm on a Saturday night, there was a short wait as expected. My husband and I waited about 10 minutes before being seated at a high top table near the door. We were grateful for such a short wait on a Saturday night. We looked over the delicious-sounding menu and agreed upon sharing three small plates. We had the Blackened Shrimp, the Mussels, and Risotto. The blackened shrimp dish was out of this world! Seriously, oh my goodness, so good! It was flavorful and complex and spiced perfectly. I would have been happy to just have an entire meal of this. The large shrimp were served with wasabi mashed potatoes and a soy-honey glaze. It was the perfect balance of spicy and sweet. The mussels were fine, nothing to write home about to still tasty. We ended our meal with the Risotto and like the shrimp, it was full of bold flavors, balanced perfectly. It was rich and creamy with fresh flavors of mushrooms, greens, and jalapenos. Absolutely wonderful! Now, for the negative part of our experience: Immediately after being seated, our server gave us water (though didn't greet us) and then showed up 9 minutes later to ask simply "are you ready to order?" After ordering three small plates and a beer, we didn't see/hear from our server again until after dinner after our table was cleared to ask us "Can I get you anything else?" So...that means that our server said a total of 11 words to us. Based on a 20% tip, she got paid $1/word. So, again, my second time here, I was very, very disappointed with the impersonal, disinterested service that I received at Copper Crown. My husband ordered the special $3 IPA but was served the $5.50 IPA, not on special. My husband drank it anyway (and got charged for it accordingly) because like I said, our server never came to check on us throughout the entire dining experience. There was other staff who filled our waters and removed our empty plates but no one was friendly with us or asked us how our food was, etc. Great food that I definitely recommend but I personally won't be back because of the service I recieved both times dining here. :: Original review:: Sad to say that I was very disappointed with my visit to Copper Crown. When I was done eating, I sat with empty plates and a credit card on the counter for about 5 minutes. Not only was my service bad, sadly as was the food. I ordered the buffalo chicken, a go-to favorite and sweet potato fries. The fries were tasty and cooked perfectly but the sandwich bread was soggy from the sauce and the coleslaw tasted horrible and old. I ended up eating just the chicken with no bun and coleslaw but again, no one checked on me to see if my food was ok. Words cannot accurately describe the ecstasy experienced when eating one of their burgers...I will never be the same! (It's making me drool, just thinking about it!) My second-favorite aspect of CC is the ambiance. I never write reviews but had to share a wonderful experience we had at Copper Crown. Truly one of the best meals we have had in AVL. We brought our very small kids (1.5 and 4) and the server was so kind, patient, and attentive, taking their orders first and bringing out their food quickly.
