Spent an afternoon here with our dogs.(dogs are not allowed on the distillery tour but in store and out back fine) Tasted all their products, very fine, then had a cocktail out back in a very beautiful setting by the creek. Darcy was our host and she was very knowledgeable about the distillery(her uncle owns it) They use locally sourced ingredients, some of which they grow themselves. My wife and I came here for a tasting and a tour on a Thursday evening and we're the only ones there. Despite that, one of the distillers kindly gave us a detailed tour of the faculty and process with sincere enthusiasm. After we tried the tasting where we got to try four whiskeys or gin for 8 dollars. He detailed every Whiskey for us and recommendations on how to properly taste each alcohol. I would highly recommend visiting this place and picking up a couple bottles like we did. The original single malt and limited time peachwood Whiskey is what we would recommend trying. read more

I must confess upfront, this is my first experience with a distillery. I have been to a handful of wineries, but never a distillery. On a recommendation from a coworker I went with my four year old daughter on the way to our camping weekend in Shenandoah National Park. Upon arrival we were welcomed into their large front doors. Inside it has a cozy, warm, wooden, old-timey feel. There was a nice old dog sitting there that politely greeted us before our tour got underway. I believe the name of our tour guide was Tom, an investor/owner. He first told us what they make there, a single malt whiskey and a rye whiskey. He then showed us the massive bags of barley they used in production of their whiskey, and explained how Virginia Tech had developed this type of barley specifically for their whiskey distillery. (Or for whiskey distilling in general). He then opened a large door to a refrigerated room that was kept around 60 degrees. The floor of the room was filled with the barley seeds, which they were sprouting for 5 days to add a sweet flavor to them. He let us hold some barley in our hands, and encouraged us to eat/taste one ourselves. They were a little sweet, actually. He explained that once the sprouting process was complete, they would be smoked in the smoking room next door to the sprouting room where they were smoked with applewood. Then they mash/grind them using a machine that looks similar to a wood chipper. Then they walked us over to this other room where they boiled/steamed the mash in one vessel. Then they would move them to another vessel to ferment with the yeast. He let us climb up to the top of it and look in at it fermenting. The stuff was bubbling and moving as if it were alive, which I guess, technically, it was. He also told us to put our hands over and feel the heat coming up from the fermenting mash. From there it went into the distillation tank where it would be heated and condensed through a copper pipe and over into the collection kettle where the spirits were said to be between 150-160 proof. I believe they added water to weaken it to the desired level of potency. They used some kind of measurement device to determine how much alcohol it contained. From there it would be placed into the oak barrels for a few months, where it would absorb sugars and colors from the wood. He said they would occasionally roll the barrels around to make the whiskey happy. :) He showed us the bottler and the wax roller thing for the bottle top. We were then encouraged to sniff some of the single malt and rye whiskey, but we were not allowed by law to taste any. Boo Virginia! At the end of the tour I bought a few bottles and gave Tom a cigar I had with me to enjoy with his whiskey. A very educational and fun experience. He told us the History Channel had come and filmed their place and it might air in a few months. I neglected to mention that the entire operation is very small, and almost primitive. Everything is done by hand with only a few exceptions. Also, for those of us who believe in the Second Amerndment, they had no problem with me open carrying my firearm in their facility. My wife and I found the Copper Fox while looking for places near the Shenandoah National park to pick up some camping "supplies". Located a few miles from an entrance into the park in small town Sperryville sits the distillery down a gravel road. We stopped in around 10:30 which easily sets the record for earliest time of the day I have sipped whiskey. The staff was friendly and seemed to really enjoy their guest. We did their sample tasting (7 dollars) and took home a few bottles of their bourbon. Everything is made in house, or barn I should say, so the tour they offer is apparently very informative. If we had not been in a hurry I would have loved to partake given my distilling knowledge is low but love for drinking is high. From what I learned from the tasting is that they try and make everything by hand with traditional recipes which is impressive. Copper Fox Distillery is the only Single Malt Distiller in the US. He smokes and ages his whisky with fruit woods. I would describe him as very experimental, and this produces amazing and interesting spirits. Rick Wasmund at Copper Fox Distillery is putting Sperryville on the map. read more

A little tricky to find when our phone lost GPS but we made it to the great little gem of a distillery. when we walked into the building through two large old wooden doors we were greeted by a dog and two people who were reading the newspaper. It was almost 2 so they waited to do the tour and for the first bit it was just the two of us in the party but four more came part way through. Very informal tour but he was knowledgeable and open to any questions. You can smell the whiskey but are not allowed to taste it. We love the Copper Fox distillery -- it's not a restaurant or bar, it's just a place that distills excellent and unique spirits. We love their aged (23 months, for their most-recent batch) and smoked rye whiskey -- very unique with powerful smokiness. When you open the big, heavy wood front door you are immediately enveloped by the aroma of their cherry wood smoke. The tour is fun as you get to see every little step in their process. The place is not huge but it's packed with charm and character. All this AND it's tucked in the north end of Sperryville -- a little Virginia town full of its own charm and character. Just across the parking area is the Pen Druid brewery and an art gallery (along with other great shops) that are both fun to visit. No doubt we will return and we might even see you there! read more

I didn't have the tour, but did buy a bottle of single malt (and quickly went back for another). Having been raised in Scotland I have more than a passing acquaintance with single malt Scotch whisky, and I was astonished to find a local distillery with a whisky that is smoother and more palatable (to me) than Scotch (please withhold my name to protect me from furious Scotsmen!) This must be Virginia's best kept secret. Go ahead and buy a bottle or two, you won't regret it. read more

A good (now even better) friend turned me on to Wasmund's several years ago and it quickly became my favorite single malt--definitely on par with any "official" scotch whisky from across the pond. (As a point of reference, my other favorites are Oban and The Macallan.) Rick, with his Copper Fox Distillery, is living PROOF (if you'll pardon the pun) that old world tradition, soulful craftsmanship, and personal pride in achieving excellence are not bygone traits in this world of mass production and mediocrity. Whether you are a scotch lover like me or just someone who wants to see true true craftsmanship in action, a stop at Copper Fox for the grand tour is well worth your time and a nice Saturday drive to the quaint little town of Sperryville. Those who appreciate the very finest of spirits will find Wasmund's single malt whisky to be a very pleasant surprise indeed. Crack open a bottle and pour a shot or three... your nose and palate won't believe it didn't come from the land of kilts, bagpipes, and peat bogs! We are lucky to have a gem like Copper Fox and a master distiller like Rick Wasmund on this side of the Atlantic, let alone right here in central Virginia. What more can I say? Simply outstanding! Oh, one last thing: In addition to his rye whisky and original single malt, Rick now offers a special "Blue Top" bottle, which I understand is a port-barrel aged single malt. After a short nosing session today, I bought a bottle of the Blue Top and can't wait to try it with a good cigar--I'm thinking a Macanudo Vintage '97 will work! read more

My family and I (to include three children ages 10, 8 ,and 5) made a visit to Copper Fox Distillery on 02/01/15. Upon arrival, we were met at the door by Rick, who proceeded to give us a tour. We visited the malting room (got to taste some malted barley), observed the apple/cherry smoker in operation, the mash tanks (got to taste the mash), the barrel room, and the bottling line. It was a thorough, comprehensive, and informative tour. Rick could not have been more laid back, and the children being present was never an issue. Followed the tour with a tasting of the Rye, a Single Malt, the gin, and the Blue Label. My favorite was the Wasmund's Single Malt, followed by the Rye. Took home a bottle of each from the store which is located on site. Afterwards, we sat around the iron stove and talked with Rick before we departed. This is exceptional whisky, and the environment in which it is produced is old school...meaning people are friendly. This place has Catoctin Creek beat hands down both in the quality of their product, and the friendly environment in which it's produced.
