I found this place after seeing the van while passing through Sperryville on my way for some hiking. Finally made it back and glad I did. Rick Wasmund, the owner, is knowledgeable and trying some different techniques which are producing a unique and tasty spirit. Although out of the rye at the time of this review, he is making more and what he had for nosing was very promising. read more

Great place to get some local brewed small batch whiskey. Located in a nice small town of Sperryvillle, the distillery is located in an old barn/farm in a neat stone building. The free tour shows their process and it looks more like an illegal moonshine operation than a modern distillery. That is the charm of the place. They are building a seperate tasting room which will eventually allow visitors to sample the products. Great products which make great home drinking and gifts for the right occaisions. I like their home distilling kits to flavor and make your own brew. The town of Sperryville is fun with small shops, restaraunts, stores and antique shops for a nice day trip. As a huge Single Malt fan, I was very excited when my friends suggested a trip to Copper Fox Distillery, the only Single Malt distillery in the US, followed by a fun picnic in the area. Copper Fox Distillery, is located in Sperryville, VA which is a quaint little, picturesque town that also offers cute cafes, and a small downtown. We were a group of 20 people, and were fortunate enough to get the tour from Rick Wasmund himself, who is the owner, malt-master, and 'father' of the whole place. We also learned that Rick Wasmund did his internship in Islay region in Scotland: which is my favorite Single-Malt region! With great humor, and fantastic explanations he gave us such a fun and informative tour of the place. Unlike other distillery tours that one might have done in Europe or elsewhere in the US where the tour takes place in a sort of "museum" part of the distillery: here, you can actually see the entire process from start to finish. You see the actual barley room, see the real smoking room, go inside of it, and even climb the stairs to touch and smell the barley that is currently being smoked. Followed by the actual place where the barley is being processed, you can stick your finger in the barrel and taste it (sweet like oatmeal!) and climb up the stairs on top of where it is being fermented and smell it (spicy and burns your nose!) and see the real process of making it to be the delicious single malt or whiskey. This place is so great, you can even see where a nice lady is putting the labels on the bottles by hand, and where another nice gentleman is waxing the bottle necks: all happens in real time, right in front of you. We observed them making a shipment to the UK, right in front of our eyes: bottles were filled, labeled, and individually waxed. How real and fun is that? The tour was fun, we all purchased fantastic goods from their store, and played with the sweet pets of the place. This will be your perfect Saturday get-away, less than 2 hours from the heart of DC. If you have a guest in town or if you want to plan the perfect Saturday get-away- I highly recommend you'll try this fantastic little town, and amazing distillery! We finally opened the rye whiskey...I know I know, how come it took so long. Appreciate we had a healthy stock of whiskeys on hand and it got pushed to the side. All I can say is wow, I absolutely love the rye whiskey. I also used it to make a Manhattan and it's perfect...bold, spicy, just a wonderful taste. read more

I saw lots of great reviews for this place, so I thought I would give my husband a break from all the wineries we were visiting and do something he would be interested in. We arrived at 12:30 on a Saturday (3/16), and tours are usually only done at the top of the hour, so we figured we would be waiting. However, as soon as I stepped out of the bathroom, we were informed that our tour was ready to go. It was me, my husband, and our tour guide, whose name I forgot - much to my disappointment. He was fabulous, and I wish I could remember his name to give him some thanks on here. He first brought us over to a stand, where he showed us the various types of products they make - Rye and SIngle-Malt, and both in spirit form so that you can take some home and brew it in a mini-barrel if your heart desires. We were able to then see the full production process from start to finish. We even got to smell the fermenter; that was an experience! There aren't any tastings, but you can buy the product there. We bought a bottle of the Rye, which is very good. I wish we would had also bought the barrel to make our own, as I feel that would have been a fun project. This place is a great stop out in Sperryville, and the tour takes about a half hour and is complimentary. Again, our guide was fabulous. We learned a lot and had fun doing so! read more

This was a fun place to visit. Tucked away in the back of various buildings you will fine the distillery. The give tours, however, no tastings! The tour is informative although you will come out reeking of apple brew as the smell gets in your clothes. The staff is friendly and down to earth. They have a tiny store. read more

Enjoyed the tour of this very small, family run distillery. A liitle surprused to see the doors open only for the tour times. If you miss a tour by a few minutes, you might not get in even the gift shop for the next hour. Also a little disappointed with the "our whiskey is better than everything else. It doesn't need to be aged. That is a myth!" attitude. Still, it is worth the stop. read more

An awesome little distillery that offers good spirits and interesting history behind how they make the whiskeys and even obtained some of their recipes. Other reviewers are not kidding...definitely in no service land. Also definitely worth the trip. Restored historic workspaces are perfect backdrop for crafting spirits that are like drinking history. Owner was trained in the Islay region of Scotland and has brought those traditions here. The difference is the of local grains and woods of this region. Rye smoked with apple or cherry gives a lighter smoke flavor than peats traditional of Scotland. They also offer a gin that is much more botanical than a traditional London dry. I was left with lingering notes of anise. All in all a great afternoon experience. read more

This is an excellent product! You can find it in select VABC stores, but it's worth the trip to Sperryville to see the distillery and meet the folks that make this outstanding hooch! Distillery sits on a beautiful property shared by an antique store and a few other shops. Take the Sperryville Pike way instead of 211 unless your crossing the mountain coming from Luray. So proud of this Virginia made product! Keep up the great work!!! read more

Visiting this whisky distillery was fun. Took a your, did a full tasting, learned they ship some of their product overseas - 1 container a year filled with 150,000 bottles. They use Cherry and apple wood smoke to infuse the flavor into their whisky. read more

This is the most unwelcoming places I've been in my life and I've been to many places. Let me repeat, in my life. The distillery is located in a beautiful "nook" in Sperryville, VA. Beautiful creeks and areas to enjoy them. So, in these days of Covid, some operations aren't quite the same and wineries, distilleries and breweries operate on their own "procedures." That's fine. Here's what happened to me: First of all, I was there early. I got there at noon. Not long after a couple of cars arrived with what I can only assume as staff because they went into the building. On a Sunday, they didn't open until 1pm. Anyway, I was at the BIG door where you are suppose to ring a bell (only once by direction of a sign). I did that and waited, nothing. So, I pushed the door opened and it looked like everyone was involve with their own roped-off activities. As I walked a little further in, a Fabio look alike asked me if I had been met at the door, I said no. He instructed me to go outside again and ring the bell. I went outside and just waited there, I didn't like the welcome. I heard voices on the other side of the door saying, is there someone at the door? A very young guy opened the door but was not looking at me, he was looking at his left and asked whomever, "is this for me, I answered the last one." He eventually looked at me and I told him I was looking for someone who was already there. He insisted that I look at menus that were on a table to the left when you walked in. I told him I wasn't going to order anything, that i was looking for someone. When I walked in, there is a retail store to the right with a man hanging on the doorsill. A littler further down there was a bar with a female bartender mashing something to make a cocktail, I guess. A few steps down was a roped-off area with some guys doing what distillers do (what?). The back area was beautiful with a stream running in the back and a tent with some tables for people to try the flights. If you are the area, go to this little "shopping center". Stop at the distillery, if it's open and see how they operate it as a "speak-easy", clique. I won't be back. BTW, it's clear Scotch. read more

We loved our tour of the Copper Fox Distillery. They obviously have a lot of knowledge and take great care in every step of the process. Having worked in another distillery, I really appreciated the artisan-ship of this distillery. Unfortunately, we visited before they had their tasting license, but that just gives us an excuse to go back. We did bring home a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of gin. Let me just say: wow. My husband doesn't usually care for gin, but this went down very smoothly. And the whiskey was really something special. read more

This place is so much fun. A rustic barn of a place with pot stills, funky furniture, a small bar, and a wood burning fireplace to drink a hot toddy by. Off the beaten path for sure. The tastings are a must and the tour was amazing. Theses guys love what they do and it comes through. read more

Have not yet visited the distillery itself, but tonight husband brought home a bottle of their pricey ($40+) new "VIP" gin. We're not gin snobs by any means - but do enjoy premium brands - but this stuff is worse than furniture polish. Does not even remotely taste like gin, & has weird overly-flowery overtones - not the herbal tones that gin should have. Their other offerings may be lovely, but steer clear of the gin if you're even remotely a gin fan. I can't imagine even gin experts liking this stuff. read more

copper fox distillery is a welcome break from the wineries of northern virginia. as the only single-malk whisky distillery in the states, i'm just lucky i got to stop by and enjoy a little tour and some souvenirs. such a bummer though, that we can't take little tastes of the goods. but after a free tour around the grounds and seeing the barrels full of aging spirit, my friends and i became inspired to barrel and age our own rye and single malts. luckily for us, copper fox was set up perfectly to offer mini barrels. so i'll let you know how it turns out in about 8 more months. overall though, if you're in the area and looking for something a bit more off-the-beaten-path, then definitely make a trip out to copper fox distillery. read more

Beware: no tastings available. That said, this is one of the best tours I've ever taken. The location is cozy and rustic and the folks know their stuff and love talking about it. You get to taste the rye (the grain, not the finished product), stick your head in the distilling vat and take a whiff and see the whole production from start to finish. I'm not a whiskey fan, but two people showed up while we were there just to buy whiskey because their ABC stores ran out. read more

The tours here are excellent. Helen (Rick Wasmund's Mom) gave us the tour, since everyone else was still eating breakfast. The whole place smells wonderful, and you get to see every step of the operation. Rick met us halfway through the tour, and we even heard about the recent wedding proposal that happened on the grounds. I love the feel of this small family run distillery. You can get their single malt whiskey at most ABCs in Virginia, and quite a few stores in DC as well. The whiskey is only aged for 19 months, however, so keep that in mind if you want to compare it to your favorite glen-whatever. Definitely worth a visit and tour! read more

Fun way to spend an hour in a charming little town.

Visited midday for a tour and tasting. It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed the experience. The tour was very informative and the tasting was, well, tasty. We were most impressed with their single malt, and we picked up a bottle to take home. We felt the ryes and gin were a bit overpriced, perhaps if we found them online for cheaper, we'd purchase those. But overall, it was a great outing. Look for Chip the distillery cat who is pretty bad-ass. read more

The whiskey is very well crafted, delightfully smooth and drinkable. When we were done we tottered over to the antique shop across the parking lot to shop while we sobered up. I've toured lots of wineries, but this was my first distillery tour. The operatrion is small and family run. Our tour was conducted by an extremely knowledgeable young man who obviously practiced what he was preaching. He knew the process and its intricasies in and out. His pride was evident as well. These factors, combined with the rustically charming facility, permeated with a woodsy, malty aroma, made for a most enjoyable experience. Could not check in because of poor cell coverage. Went there seeking Gin and came across a lovely experience. On surprise is you have to ring the bell to have the door opened by a real person who greets you and ushers you in. The first thing that hits you is the aroma and next the very rustic decor. The tour of this small hand s on grain to bottle Virginia product is interesting and intimate with only about 4-7 in the groups we saw. Tasting their five product afterwards is recommended because you only pick three. On the tour you get more information on each and a chance to take a whiff so making a decision is easier and is their are two of you and you do not mind sharing one can taste all five. Besides the gin their ryes whiskey and "bourdon" are also good and probably the main reason to go. read more

Came for the whisky, left with with the gin. Best gin I've ever tasted. They made me an awesome tasting gin and tonic while iwas there. Can't wait to get home and make a gin martini with it.
