California has not legalized commercial casinos. So how do Morongo, Yamaava, Agua Caliente and the other California casinos do it? They are all located on Indian lands. Native American tribes can own casinos in certain areas due to tribal sovereignty, which allows federally recognized tribes to operate largely independently of state gambling regulations, so long as they do so on sovereign lands. What's different? Primarily, no Sports Book, and no traditional roulette or craps (they use cards instead of dice or a roulette ball). Also, slot machine payouts are not as transparent as, say, Nevada state gaming laws require. Also, no high end shopping, but the Cabazon outlets are right next door, and El Paseo shopping in Palm Desert is right down the lane. What's the same? Super giant gaming floor with a zillion slots machines from one penny to $500 per pull. There's a fancy steakhouse on top which I will try next time, an AYCE buffet, and a few other restaurants. I have not stayed there, as I am loyal to Bonvoy properties, but everyone in the know says the lazy river cannot be beat. Free parking, though you must hoof it from some distance to the casino door. Morongo has to address the amount of 18 year olds running around. (Perhaps they're 21 but it didn't appear so). They tend to jump on a table, make one bet, get rowdy, and don't play with correctly. When 1 person makes a bet, their 8 person group stands behind them making the table feel cramped. They then leave immediately and will circle back to jump back in and do it again. It's Just not the most enjoyable experience at the tables. The only thing missing at this casino is a craps table! They have electronic craps but nothing beats the feeling of throwing dice. I will say I was happy to hit an unexpected hand pay at the end of my day. I'll be back for the lazy river for sure. Always a good time

So when I say they lost a genuinely loyal customer, I've got the play history to prove it. And they lost me over twenty dollars. The short version: I had a $20 cash-out ticket that went a little past its expiration. Took it to the cashier. Rather than pull up the rewards card that was literally in the machine when I printed it -- the thing that proves the ticket was mine -- they voided it, took the paper, and spent the whole interaction insisting they weren't "keeping" my money, just "voiding" it. Either way, I walked out with nothing and no explanation, and they walked off with my $20 and, as it turns out, all my future business. As for the property: it feels old and worn to me. The machines and the floor give off a tired, run-down vibe, and if you're not into sitting at slots there's basically nothing here -- no sports bar, no variety, not much atmosphere. I've never had a meal here I'd recommend. The one exception, credit where it's due, is the Rock Yard; the outdoor shows are legitimately fun and the only part of this place I'll miss. Here's the real tell, though: Agua Caliente, which isn't even a place I'm crazy about, treats its guests noticeably better than this. And Augustine is on another level entirely -- the service they give locals and regulars is genuinely excellent, the exact opposite of what I got here. When the casino you don't even love is better, and the locals' spot is in a completely different class, that says everything about where Fantasy Springs put a loyal regular on its priority list. The point is a casino looked at a regular who spent real money here consistently and decided a $20 voucher was the hill to die on. They won the twenty. They lost the customer. Admission is free and visiting is really so novel. I do crochet, and do a lot of other creative crafts and was so excited for my nerdy heart to visit the museum. If you visit their website you will also see that it's the "museum seen around the world" with photos of it popping up in airports around the world because it was featured in and HSBC advertisement. So if you like to create, or you like unique roadside attractions, be sure to visit The World Famous Crochet Musuem. The cool thing too, there are other things to see and shop at the same location in Joshua Tree. The area is really neat, and a place to add to your bucket list.

I spent my birthday here in Joshua Tree and when I travel I often look up places to visit which are unusual for the area. This little place popped up and I knew I had to visit. This is an old converted drive thru Fotomat kiosk like they used to have that was deserted and sat on the highway for many years before it was moved and transformed into this museum. It houses a large and uncounted collection of colorful crochet items. Shari Elf is the artist and has collected all these whimsical pieces. From animals, dolls, food and other characters there is a lot to take in. It is very eclectic and cute. Shari is known as the "Art Queen" and she also has a gallery of art. She asks you not to touch, just look. Donations are accepted via Venmo. This area also houses other small businesses worth exploring.

Since I'm not much of a gambler, I figured why not walk in and donate my yearly $20 to the slot machines Parking was super easy right up front, and they also have a garage that leads directly into the casino. The front door security guard was really friendly too, he laughed when I told him, "I'm just here to give away my $20, I'll see you in 2 seconds." And honestly... I wasn't lying I put my $20 in, lost it immediately, and was back out in about .2 seconds. That said, it was still a fun little experience. The casino itself felt clean, quaint, and easy to navigate. Definitely a nice stop if you want to stretch your legs, play a little for fun, and get back on the road. Just maybe keep it to a small amount... at least that's my strategy Stop in for the stretch but leave your wallet and purse in the car and only take in an amount you won't cry over if you lose.
