Birthday Dinner - Cab Sav #ftw

Went here for my birthday dinner during Covid! We made reservations and had a great location for a group. We had enough room and were well distanced from the next table over. I was accompanied by a group of 5 Our service was nice. We started with wine which they have a great list. I did the Cabernet Sauvignon I think it was the $13/ glass one don't know the exact name. I ordered the harvest dip for the table which was squash onions and yogurt (spices too) pretty good but I've definitely never had that before. Served with pita. For my main dish I ordered off the featured menu. I had the NY Strip medium with a side of pomme frites and asparagus. Unfortunately the first time the steak was over cooked but the second they brought out was perfect and really appreciated the ease of switching out for my order. I'm from out of town so I did look at quite a few restaurants before selecting this one and I am happy I did. Had a great menu and a great wine selection.

Nice atmosphere, nice decor. Waitress was rude & burdened by questions but I wont base this review on that. Cheese & cracker board app was good with flavored hummus. Calamari was plain & bland. Croque Monsieur sandwich seemed the same & came with no side for a dinner entree. Just a bit overpriced for me for what you get, which was nothing extra and nothing that would bring me back.

Mahi Mahi Tacos. Could use just a little kick.

Cork on Saginaw is a great restaurant and I have been here now several times for different occasions. As a dinner restaurant, this place is worth 5-stars, no question about it. It's chic, romantic, hip, and the food served is fantastic. The oysters are always fresh and the tasty specials are worth exploring (please do see previous reviews I'd posted about Cork). I recently had the opportunity to attend the Sunday Brunch and would be amiss not to add that to my review. Unfortunately, Cork is losing a star in the process because it is somewhat of a different experience. Every 2nd Sunday of the month, Cork does Brunch. I knew it would be busy and made a reservation for 2. After arriving we were told that our table was not ready and were luckily able to find a spot at the bar for a beverage. It is a bummer we were not given a Sunday brunch menu and were unaware of the specialty brunch cocktails. It took 25 minutes before our table was ready, and while I understand they were busy, larger parties who arrived after us were seated at their tables within minutes. So here are a couple other observations we made during our time which differed from our usual experience at Cork: The usually muted noise level that gives Cork the classy ambiance in the evening was replaced with almost rowdy noise. My wife and I had to yell to converse or lean across the table, and neither of us has hearing problems. Most of the time we did a combination of both. Observing tables next to us, wherever we saw Eggs Benedict, they were served with solid yokes. That's a gastronomical no-no. Also, changing the preparation of eggs on dishes they were served with was not an option, unless the choice was to leave it off. Still, the food we ordered was good and we would enjoy it again under different conditions. Summing up, I stand by my 5-star rating for this restaurant in the evening. For Brunch, I would give it somewhere around 3 stars, which averages out to my new, 4-star review.

"Special" Teriyaki Salmon, asparagus, pineapple on bed of rice. EXCELLENT

Great place and friendly people! It's expensive but fair for the gourmet food that is served. I love this place and the owner is very nice.

Is this place fancy? Trying to go for a fancy date.

It can be. It's definitely not a place for riff raff. Check their social media, they sometimes have special music nights. Many FSO goers frequent here before the Saturday symphony. Make a reservation just in case. You won't be out of place…

My favorite thing about every event I attend here is they always have inclusive options for people with a variety of diets and they are clearly labeled! Love it/ I adore this charming little gourmet wine and charcuterie shop…read more. Excellent customer service and attention to detail, very nice array of wines, craft beer, seltzer waters, sake etc.. the wine selection is really something.. we've stopped in several times since they opened last year and it's a pleasure to patronize such a great local independent business. Apparently, the shop's theme was modeled after the "The Queen's Gambit," hence the name and the large display of chess boards in the lounge. They have a nice seating/dine in area for eating, drinking, relaxing and even playing chess on one of the many boards they keep around for guests. They have free wifi as well. The atmosphere is great for relaxing with friends over a glass of Merlot and cheese board and maybe even a rousing game of chess. I love the decor and eclectic, bohemian touches. They have 'build your own' or already customized charcuterie boards- and the cheeses apparently come from Hills Cheese shop in the Flint Farmers Market downtown. Prices are not the cheapest yet completely in alignment with the quality. The owner is super nice and very helpful in terms of helping select wine pairings and checking out hidden gems in the wine/beer display. If you're having a quick last minute gathering, I think this is the go to shop for all the essentials.

Our server, Tanner, was genuinely kind and welcoming, which made a big difference. The table was set nicely when we arrived -- wine glass and water glass, silverware wrapped with cloth napkins on a side plate, and a candle lit off to the side. It felt thoughtful and perfect for a date night. We split the French Onion Soup to start, and it was delicious. Maybe a little pricey at $12, but it came with lots of cheese and bread (plus bread on the side), so it felt worth it as a starter. My boyfriend ordered a Long Island Iced Tea -- strong, but no complaints there -- and I got cranberry juice. Both drinks came out in the same glassware as the water, styled like cocktails, which I actually appreciated. No weird "different treatment" if you're not drinking alcohol, which is always a plus to me. We also did the Build-Your-Own Board, which was really fun, and Tanner was super helpful in guiding us through the choices. We picked Summer Sausage, Garlic & Herb Soft Cheese, Smoked Gouda, Fire Roasted Tomatoes, and Balsamic Onion Jam. The Fire Roasted Tomatoes were SO GOOD, and I usually don't even like tomatoes. They were soaking in olive oil (I think?), which had great flavor and paired perfectly with the bread and Garlic & Herb Cheese. I also really enjoyed the Balsamic Onion Jam, savory, slightly sweet, and a little goes a long way. Overall, everything tasted great. I was a little disappointed in the portion of Smoked Gouda compared to the soft cheese, especially considering some soft cheeses can retail around $30 per pound. If you're looking for the best value, you might consider a different cheese option. That said, extra bread was only $1, which felt like a great deal for the amount we received. We were honestly getting pretty full and almost couldn't finish it all. We were seated in the cellar area, which was okay, just a little small, and the music was pretty loud. Not ideal for a Valentine's date when you're trying to have a conversation. Random but important: the bathrooms were spectacular. Individual, spacious, very clean, nice sink setup, pump soap, automatic paper towel dispenser, and even a candle lit. Honestly, 10/10 bathroom experience. Overall, it's a really solid date night spot with great service and good food. Just a couple small tweaks (music volume and cheese portions!) would make it even better. We'd definitely come back.
