I checked out The Corner Bar & Grill last night after seeing some good online reviews, and overall…read moreit was a solid experience with a cozy neighborhood feel. The space is smaller but very welcoming and definitely feels like a local hangout spot. When you walk in, the specials board is front and center, including their Burger of the Month, which is what I ordered. Mine featured goat cheese, spinach, strawberry compote, and jalapeños. The flavor combination was unique and really worked well together, and the burger itself was juicy. Personally, I would have loved a bit more char for those crispy edges, but the flavors were definitely there. It came with rosemary fries that were thin, crispy, and generously seasoned. I added a side of hot honey for dipping, which ended up being an unexpectedly amazing combo. The restaurant has a great beer selection, plenty of TVs for sports, fun retro-style décor, and soft lighting that creates a relaxed atmosphere. Even at 9 PM, there were families with kids dining, so it feels very family-friendly rather than a late-night bar scene. Noise levels were low enough that conversation was easy, which I really appreciated. Bathrooms were also exceptionally clean. My main hesitation was pricing. A quesadilla was around $15 and my burger was $20, which pushed dinner for one person with a drink and tip to about $35. While that seems comparable to nearby spots like Boston's, it felt a bit high for casual bar-style dining. Parking is limited, but the location is convenient, just minutes from I-75 and surrounded by other restaurants. Service was amazing. We were sad immediately and she checked back often and said what her favorite thing on the menu was. Overall, good food, creative menu options, and a comfortable atmosphere. With a little refinement and maybe slightly better value, this could easily become a regular stop.

They have a pretty nice size menu with a lot of great options. A cool thing about their menu is their sliders. You get to choose whether you want a small or a full size. The idea is to be able to pick different sliders to choose to eat. I decided on the park bowl which came with white rice topped with sesame seeds, avocado, seaweed, and carrots. I added a salmon fillet. It was so fresh and delicious - and VERY filling! I also ordered the calamari for an appetizer and that was pretty tasty as well. I did have a cocktail, it was OK, I really didn't taste any liquor and it was a little bit more sweet than I would have liked.

I never expect stellar service when you have a big party. The issue I had was the food. It was mid at best. First it came out at all different times which I think is not ideal. I ordered the chicken Caesar wrap and it said it was grilled chicken.... There is absolutely NO way this was grilled chicken, it was canned chicken shredded to the max. That was disappointing because I was thinking it was grilled chicken cut into strips or chunks and then put in the wrap. I assumed incorrectly. For me it was very sub par, for the money I would rather go elsewhere. If you're going just for drinks, then maybe it's a decent spot. I had wine so nothing too adventurous.

This is one of those unfortunate instances where I wish I could give a 3.5* rating. Everything was ok, but definitely not great. The place is loud, and way too bright, especially for an intimate experience after 8:30pm or so. We would have loved to stick around for another couple cocktails, if the cocktails and ambience were good, they weren't. The "craft cocktail" ol' fashioned was improperly garnished w/ a whole 1/4 of an orange slice, instead of the peel, it was improperly essenced, and had an improper amount of simple syrup. It was essentially a shot of bourbon with a cherry and an orange peel. Tasted terrible. The drink lacked all of the taste and trappings of the advertised craft "burnt sugar" old fashioned. Additionally, they use a 1/2 of an ice ball, which would not have been offensive, if the rest of the drink was up to par, but as it was, the cocktail seemed cheap and off-putting. 2.0/10 My date ordered a "figgy sweater," a citrusy cocktail with vodka, also off of the "craft cocktails" menu. Her drink had the opposite problem. It tasted like a lemonade with no alcohol at all, or watered down alcohol. She's a fairly lightweight that does not like strong drinks, gets tipsy off of two, and she complained throughout its consumption that the drink seemed weak and not worth ordering another. 2.0/10 We were both interested in another cocktail, but due to the loud nature of the place, the over abundance of light, and the poorly crafted cocktails, we drove to another establishment for our second round. Food ordered: Seafood Chowder - Great job, delicious, ample seafood throughout 9.5/10 Brisket Poutine - Good but it lacked cheese curds and gravy. 7.0/10 Beef tenderloin tips - terrible... the dish came out cold, we ordered the GF option, and the bread substitute was gross. The dish was overly salty, and the beef was way, way over cooked; not even medium well, most of it was well done, and tough; this was $30 wasted, we barely touched it and it's still in the fridge two days later. I'll likely throw it out. 2.0/10 Chicken Fried Lobster - nice dish, I hated the dill, but my date licked it. The dill aside, it was delicious; nice presentation, great tasting waffle, w/ well favored garnishes. However, the dish was barely warm when it came out, the ricotta/cream soaked into the waffle, and it was soggy. If it came out of the kitchen promptly it would have likely been better. 7.0/10 I'd consider ordering the chicken fried waffle again, but bad cocktails will likely keep me away. It's tough to pay $30+ in bad cocktails to accompany a $100+ meal. I'd strongly suggest turning down the lights after 8:30pm or so, and installing some noise canceling/light panels to bring the ceiling height down, quiet the place down some, and make it seem more intimate. The two tables opposite the the kitchen, in the damn hallway to the bathroom, should either be gotten rid of, made into high-tops, or install a lower counter-service along that wall for a "chef's experience." Those tables absolutely suck. We sat at them at our first visit, they tried to sit us there for our 2nd visit, but moved us after our objection. I laughed a bit throughout our meal as the people that were subsequently seated at those tables complained during their meal of the constant bumps, and interruptions that come with the territory. Finally, our waitress did a great job. The food runner was late on a couple of our dishes, resulting in cold food, but the waitress' service seemed great.

We gave ourselves about an hour or more for dinner at Tavern 101 before the show. We sat down, ordered our drinks, and then our food afterward. I got a hot dog, and my mom and sister shared a hamburger. The place was not busy yet and still had a lot of open seats. After some time, we asked about our meals because it was taking a really long time. The waiter said he would check on it. After some more time, we still did not have our food. I asked the waiter to cancel my hot dog because I knew I would not be able to eat it there or take it with me. We went out for dinner to eat out, not to take it home if we could with us. I cannot eat that fast; it takes me some time to eat because of a medical condition. By this time, it had been about 45 minutes. After a short time, my hot dog came out in a to-go container and was plopped down in front of me, according to my mom. I refused it because I had canceled it. I would have to leave it there and not take it with me because of what was planned. Shortly after, my sister's and mom's hamburger also came out in a to-go box that they did not ask for in a box. We requested my hotdog be taken off the bill and for our bill and asked to see a manager. Brandon M. came out wearing an apron and gloves and seemed upset and stressed. He was not personable; he just talked about wait times and did not ask about our side of the story. He did not ask us any questions, we were just talked to, If anything, he escalated the situation. Afterward, he came back out with the hot dog, and I refused it again. He said to me, "You are refusing it again for a second time," and I replied, "Yes." He then said I was banned from all Downtown Restaurant Investments places (Tavern 101, Old City Hall, Drift, Molasses Smoke House & Bar and Lucky Bunny). I told him we would see, because I could not believe I would be banned from places for refusing a hot dog. I asked him why, and he said it was because I refused the hot dog. I tried to explain calmly what happened, but he did not want to hear anything. He said, "What do you expect? Your food to come out in one minute?" I said no, but 15 to 20 minutes, about industry standard, would be reasonable. I told him that other tables received their food before we did, even though they were seated after us. He didn't care about anything that was said; he was just being arrogant. We paid the bill, and I tipped the waiter in cash, saying he did a good job. I spoke to Brandon again for a quick second on the way out about what happened. All seemed fine to me then. A couple of days later, I reached out to Christy (Area Supervisor) and told her what happened. She was very professional, understood the situation and has a good heart and soul. She said not to worry about it and that she would check into it. She called me back, seeming very sad, to tell me that I was indeed banned from all Downtown Restaurant Investments because Brandon claimed I was rude to the staff, and he is the owner and Vice President of Downtown Restaurant Investments. I said, "Okay, thank you." And if you can have Brandon call me so we can talk about this more. He never called. We only talked to three staff members there. The waiter, Brandon and a girl waitress. The waiter and waitress was all nice. Since then, this incident has been causing me emotional stress and losing sleep over the fact that his accusations are not warranted. I do not know what happened behind the scenes in the kitchen or what was said. But if you talk to me, my sister, and definitely my 86-year-old mom, I was not rude. I believe this is something that Brandon came up with to put a bad stereotype, discredit me and diminish my character to help justify his poor management actions towards me. Me being rude never came up at dinner. I do not know why he is making up false stories of what happened. All we wanted was a nice Mother's Day dinner at/in the restaurant that day. I think when Brandon said I was banned from all Downtown Restaurant Investments, he expected a bigger reaction from me. But it did not bother me at all, and it still doesn't to this day. Bay City has so many great places to eat with better management and customer service that truly care for their customers, not just say it.
