I had the BEST experience tonight for dinner. Our server, Amy, was very attentive and checked on us at just the right times. Our beverage was ordered with blue cheese stuffed olives that were GREAT despite being downsized on the following drinks but still very good. The Ribeye steak with gorgonzola horseradish crust was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! Basically I was in HEAVEN!!! This was THE BEST steak I have had since I was at a premier restaurant in Chicago. This is not my official review but I have to tell someone! You are the ones that I chose! George and Tammy Pesek have arrived in Mishawaka with the soft opening of their newest restaurant Corndance Tavern. The restaurant located on Grape Road that I have mentioned as a haunted location of the ghosts of restaurant pasts is now ALIVE. Upon entering you will venture into a warm cozy atmosphere with many personal touches such as photos he has taken and the woodwork in the bar and dining area that Chef George created himself. But I know you want to know my thoughts on the food. Let me say that my visit was quite nice. I am impressed that in two weeks they have been open that they staff was quite knowledgeable and helpful in menu and drink offerings. There are still kinks that need to be worked out but none that I witnessed. Check out the chalkboards that show the specials for the day. It is quite varied and will peak your interest. Tammy Pesek says that she wants folks to feel comfortable and walk up to the board or down to the Chef's station and look around at the food being prepared. Back to the food. I loved it! However, I like food with a lot of flavor. There are foods that I was told were a bit more bland but whyyyy would you want to go that route? Garlic is abundant on the on menu and incorporated in many of the dishes. I checked the menu on their original Culver location and it is about 95% the same with a few variances. For a starter, I would suggest the Ultimate Starter. Roasted whole garlic, olive oil, parmesan cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and fresh bread. Crackers would be nice with this appy as well. I was so immersed in Garlic goodness I begin concocting how I could make this at home. I ordered one of the specials which was the 8oz. Bleu Cheese encrusted bison filet with a blackened shrimp and tobacco onions. I believe that it was about $28. It was quite flavorful and the bison was prepared perfectly. It was a delight to behold and even better to taste., Most of the menu items come with two sides. I chose the Bean Medley with General Tso sauce. Nice, not too plain and fresh tasting. The second side was the White Cheddar Mashed Potatoes. The taters were good but did not pack a cheesey punch. That is not necessarily a bad thing as the steak and the sauce on the beans had a lot of flavor. I believe that folks will be able to find something on this menu to gnaw on! There are soups, salads, fish, chicken, quail, pasta and pizza. Let me note that there is a wood fired pizza oven but due to health regulations (our tax dollars at work) they were informed that they could not burn wood in the WOOD BURNING PIZZA OVEN. Whatever. The pizza was still looking good to me. Finally, because this is not really a review for me, you should know that the Peseks have a farm with real bison and other animals. They also have real gardens. You will notice both on their menus. They may buy from others but these folks believe in sustainability and that is quite refreshing to see in this area. Here is how they put it, "We source the majority of our food from local organic farms, Amish farmer markets, and our own American Bison Ranch." Anyways, I could go on and on but I am not, because this is not a real review. Later this year, after they work out all the kinks, that I did not notice, we will have an official review and a "What's for Dinner?" I've been to many times, but just now getting around to writing a review. My most recent experience was last night with a group of friends. The place was packed being a Friday night and ND's final home football game for the season, but we had a great table in the bar for the five of us. Service was pretty good despite being extremely busy. Our server did seem to be a little overwhelmed at times with all his tables, but we've been there enough to know him and wasn't worried about it. The girls were drinking wine (house Chardonney for me) and the guys were drinking beer. It's always hard to decide what to order at Corndance. The menu is great and includes many unique items featuring locally sourced food (included local farm raised bison). They have a wide variety of daily specials too. We often opt for appetizers so we can try a few things. Tonight's selection included the arancini (deep fried mushroom risotto balls), chipotle pork sliders with homemade gardinera and green bean fries. I'm not a fan of mushrooms, but everyone else at the table raved about them. The muffalatta flat bread was delicious with a great olive tapenade, assortment of Italian meats and cheese on a crisp flatbread. The one entree ordered was the fish in a bag. The selection of the night was Mahi Mahi with an Asian twist featuring subtle hints of hoisin, soy and ginger. The fish was baked with julienned vegetables and steamed bok choy - very light yet savory dish. While we didn't order it this trip, the Sword of John Adams is something to see - check for the night's selection as it changes regularly. Last night's was a 14 oz ribeye with baked potato skins. It's quite the presentation when served on a huge sword! We ordered a few desserts to share - butterscotch creme brulee (didn't really notice the butterscotch flavor and not one of my favorite brulees, although the top was perfectly coated and crisp), almond joy cheesecake and chocolate molten lava cake. Corndance is pretty reasonably priced when sticking with appetizers and small plates. While the entrees can be a little pricier, it's well worth it for the creativity, high quality and locally sourced foods. read more

Where do I start? We were in South Bend to drop our daughter off for her freshman year at the University of Notre Same (Go Irish!). On a previous campus visit, Corndance Tavern was recommended to us, but we could not fit it in. So, here's our review! We live in Southern California (Orange County) so good quality dining (OC, Los Angeles, San Diego) is plentiful. In addition, we lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for a number of years, so we have some experience in unique dining experiences. Our reservation was for Saturday night at 745pm. We were seated at approx 750pm in the wine cellar room. Great location. Jerry was our server. Drinks were ordered (martini and a glass of red wine). We tipped him off that our daughter with us (not the Notre Dame student, but her younger 15 year old sister) was gluten free and dairy free. Jerry immediately said "you have a lot of choices, I'll be right back to go over the menu in detail". When Jerry returned with our drinks he proceeded to go through each menu item with great care to explain the options to make them dairy free and gluten free. Some items could not be modified, but he noted those as well. My wife ordered the berry salad. Very good, a bit too much dressing. I ordered the elote appetizer. Outstanding. Perfectly prepared. Not too much mayo. For entrees, my wife and I ordered the filet mignon (medium and medium well). Perfectly prepared. My daughter ordered the NY strip. Medium. A bit pink, but very good. For sides we ordered a baked potato (dry), corn risotto (creamy, flavorful), white cheddar mashed potatoes (very good), charred carrots (delicious). Overall the meal was very, very good. I'll be back visiting my daughter in late September and I've already made a reservation! Pros: well prepared meats. Knowledgeable server. Easily modified menu for gluten free and dairy free. Cons: while reasonably priced for a big city (LA, OC, San Diego) food prices were a bit steep for South Bend area. Note : martini was a bargain at $10.50. Bottom line - if you are anywhere near Corndance Tavern - don't miss it!! read more

We had the elote, the butcher's wedge salad, the pork belly special, a fish special and the pear ravioli. Everything was delicious, fish special was ok. Don't forget the cake in a can for dessert! I wanted to like Corndance from the beginning. I've been to other restaurants run by the ownership and loved the experience. Corndance though just doesn't live up to the hype. Arrived for a reservation and STILL had to wait to be seated in a half full restaurant. Seated at a table for 4 that felt like it was good for 6. Handled by a server with LONG lists of specials our party could barely hear or understand. Appetizers arrived at different times. Presentation was nothing special. Meals arrived at different times. LONG dessert list just ended up sounding like a mess. Overall we felt like we spent a bunch of money that might have netted a better experience at Longhorn. read more

The only negative about Corndance is that it's not in Chicagoland! :( I was in Mishawaka on business and asked the front desk manager at my hotel for a dining recommendation. I'm a foodie, so I was thrilled when he told me that there was something other than Friday's, Chili's and Houlihans nearby. It was a Monday night when I went and the restaurant was fairly quiet. Being solo, I just grabbed a seat at the bar (which I learned the owner completely built himself, how cool!). The bar manager, Joseph, was a pleasure from start to finish. He handed me an iPad and explained how to navigate through the menu. I was so upset I wasn't with a group of people, solely from the stand-point of my stomach not being roomy enough to accomodate more than a couple of appetizers. I wanted to try the entire menu, it looked so amazing! Much of it is naturally sourced and when Joseph informed me that ownership has his own bison stock down south I decided that one of the bison dishes was a must-try! I gave the bison tartare a try as well as an asian calamari that Joseph suggested. Both were very good (not the best calamari of my life, as he insisted it would be) but still good. I wished the sauce on the calamari was a little more dynamic. It was very one-note (sweet). I would have liked some acid (lime?) and maybe lemongrass or garlic to round out the flavors. The tartare was great, albiet maybe a little salty...but it's meat and I'd rather have it overseasoned than under, in any case. Based on the very limited exposure to Corndance's food, I would have given 4-stars. The fifth star was purely based on excellent service and a warm ambiance. Joseph is a star and I hope the owners realize how great he is! Thanks for a wonderful time...I kind-of hope my company sends me back to Mishawaka so I can give Corndance another go! read more

Corndance had been on my list of place to try while I was in the area, and I'm really glad I did. The restaurant has a pretty cool look inside and a nice bar area. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the often changing, seasonal menu. They also make a big effort to use local and fresh ingredients and are big on farm to fork cooking which I really appreciate. Finally, they seem to put a lot of creativity into the design and plating of their dishes. Now onto the food-we had: -Bacon wrapped dates. Awesome! Tender dates filled with bleu cheese which was super velvety and a crunchy nut. Perfect balance of sweet and salty, silky and crunch. -Pear ravioli. Very, very good, but quite sweet. Not a bad thing, but be ready for an almost desert like entree. The portion is also pretty large. -BLT Salad. Awesome!! One of the top salads I've ever had. Bacon was incredibly smokey and thick cut. You also NEED to get the beef tips along with this salad. The pieces of steak were cooked perfectly to medium rare, topped with a great sauce, and large. The plating of this dish was very artful, with whole leaf lettuce placed inside of a crouton cup, but this did make it rather hard to eat. -Along with the food, we sampled some of their drinks. There is a long list of cocktails and a respectable tap list including some form their own brewery. Corndance is not cheap, but neither is the quality of their food. I would strongly suggest visiting if you're in the South Bend area and want a great meal. P.S. If you like ketchup even a little, don't miss their mango ketchup - so good. read more

In general the food tastes great even if they decide to service in some of the weirdest contraptions known to man ala the burger. My one problem is the way they explain the specials because it seriously takes up to 5 minutes....I get the impression they are trying to be some posh 5 star restaurant doing all these cool things but seriously were in Mishawaka/South Bend...just make great food you don't need to talk it up so much. read more

After years of hearing the lore of Corndance Cafe in Culver but never having the opportunity to try it, I was excited about the Corndance Tavern opening in Mishawaka. Our server was enthusiastic, maybe a tad on the overeager side. He was attentive and helpful, thoroughly reviewing the specials. According to him, the specials change daily -- that's enough to pique my interest and convince me to consider returning in the future. Our party started with the spinach dip. This is so far beyond that slop they serve at your average chain restaurant. Flavored with healthy doses of garlic and sauteed onions and served with toasted, fresh bread, this dip maybe changed my life a little. And, unlike most restaurants, when we ran out of toast points, they offered to bring more. That's class. The wood-fired pizza is excellent. Two of us ordered the pear Gorgonzola pizza -- large portion, great flavor, and hot out of the oven. A dining companion order the linguine with black mussels. Fantastic -- the sauce was just a touch spicy and there was a generous portion of mussels atop the pasta. The real show stopper, though, was the chicken and waffles. Twice-fried chicken atop bacon and cheddar waffles. Rave reviews from everyone at the table. Corndance is renowned for their bison dishes. A few patrons around us ordered the bison rib-eye and bison short ribs. The dishes looked fantastic. Check out their list of cocktails and absolutely don't miss out on their wine list. They have some great wine by the glass options, including the Amphora Zinfandel. Would absolutely recommend reservations. We called in the afternoon (thankfully) and were told they only had two reservations left , one at 5:15 and the other at 8:30. This place was great! I went on a Wednesday and opted for the pre-fix menu for $25. I picked the chicken chorizo stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer, grilled salmon with veggies and a small salad......AMAZING! I had the molten chocolate cake with ice cream and it was just ok. Also enjoyed a grade A dirty Marini at the bar and it was made to perfection. The customer service was stellar! The staff was awesome. Went here for our pre-anniversary dinner. LOL we're weird like that. I had the veal roulade and my husband the bison ribeye (rare). We also had the corndance salad as an appetizer. All around great!!! The steak was perfectly cooked and really thick (12oz). The veal was perfectly cooked as well, not dry like can happen with veal. The salad was even perfect. The dressing was a wonderfully aged vinaigrette. This is now a favorite place of mine! I love the eclectic atmosphere and menu choices. Nothing here is plain by any means. There are plenty of places to sit so even when it's packed, there is no wait and lots of space. I love all the wood and fancy tables and booths. Their menu is totally unique and you will not find items similar anywhere else...I promise. I sat at the bar and watched some sports. The bartender was VERY nice and gave me plenty of attention. She even noticed that it was my birthday and offered me a free dessert after my meal. As I sat, every meal that came out to its table was a showcase and everyone had to turn and look and guess what it was. They all looked like masterpieces! I wasn't that hungry and was just killing time so I just had a couple drinks, a ham hok cupcake, and a hummus plate. All magnificent! I cannot say enough about the cupcake...oh my goodness! The meat was so lean and the cupcake so moist. They were telling me about the ham hoks they use and how huge they are. The flavors went together so well and the sauce was perfect. The hummus plate was wonderful with all of the veggies. It was nice and thick and seasoned perfectly. The drinks were not watered down and tasted really nice. I went ahead and took the free dessert...well why not? It was free lol. It was coconut cheesecake. I don't care much for coconut most times, but it was smooth and not too sweet. Went here one weekend. The food was good, I had a nice Midwest Steak and my boyfriend has the seafood pasta. Once cool thing about the seafood pasta was that it came in a glass mason jar, that they told us was also the to go container, so we got to take it home (now I use it to hold my rice). This restaurant is about as good as it gets in South Bend, Indiana. Food is good, ambiance not so much but definitely worth going to if you're in South Bend. Great atmosphere, wait staff was very prompt. Had smoked duck ravioli for an appetizer, it was great and the broccolini that came with it was the best I've had. I had a 16oz 65 day aged steak (med/rare) i was underwhelmed. It was cooked great but the cut of meat itself was poor quality. Their was 3 other steaks served at our table that night and they all looked much better, so I guess it was just bad luck. The elote corn and potatoes that came with it couldn't have been better.
