I found this place after I called another Chinese food establishment that's closing it's doors after being in business since the 1930's to find out the wait time. When I was told they were closing early tonight because they were almost out of food, and that they were probably closing their doors for good tonight as well, I begrudgingly looked elsewhere to get my wonton soup fix. I had been here when it was a poke spot, and was never impressed because my order was always wrong, and the food was lackluster, so I when this place was suggested to me by a friend I was skeptical, but the reviews seemed solid and it was close by, so I went for it. I went over and got an order to go. I ordered the wonton soup, the salt and pepper chicken wings, and the Takoyaki. The wonton soup was as to be expected, the only thing that I wasn't expecting was for the wontons to be pork and shrimp, versus just the typical pork wontons, which I generally prefer, but with that being said I would definitely order the wonton soup again. It hit the spot. The Takoyaki was delicious, and not over cooked like a lot of places serve it. Crunchy and crisp on the outside, and soft and gooey on the inside with a piece of squid right in the center! Also had a great sauce and "crunchies" on top. The salt and pepper chicken wings were superb! They had a lot of different styles of wings you could order, so this decision was hard for me, but as far as I can tell, I made the right choice and will order two orders next time, and can't wait to try the other flavors. It certainly did not disappoint as far as take out Chinese food goes, and I'll definitely be back! It seems a lot of people feel this way, as the counter was littered with takeout orders ready to be picked up. Black Pepper Filet Mignon- I'm not even a steak person but this was fantastic. It's super flavorful without being salty and the meat is perfectly tender. Order this! 2. Honey Walnut Shrimp- the shrimp was crispy and paired well w the candied walnut. I agree that the shrimp are more savory than honey walnut shrimp at most places but you get that sweetness from the candied walnuts. Yum! 3. Garlic Pepper Wings- these were super crispy and salty so I recommend eating them with rice. My husband couldn't stop eating them. Very good. 4. Cream Cheese Wontons- these were exactly as I expected. If you're craving your standard cream cheese wontons these are solid. 5. Despite the fact they gave me the wrong food (brought combination chow mein instead of combination fried rice) it was very delicious. Couldn't be too mad. On my crispy beef, the meat was sliced so thin it didn't have a "bite" into it feel. My husband experienced the same thing with his chicken something. We were not disappointed. I think my favorite was the sweet and sour pork. Old school and better than any place we can find. This is the cutest little find I recently stumbled upon. The wings were pretty large in size and they definitely did not skimp at all in the seasoning. The outside was very crispy and the meat inside was super juicy. They had other flavors as well but I could eat the garlic&pepper ones over and over again - Honey walnut shrimp: a pretty solid dish, although it was more on the salty side. After trying all of the other horrible take out chinese places (since Superwok closed), its awesome to have one that is both open late and also delicious. First things first: I have lived in Taiwan, spent time in China and Hong Kong, and am very familiar with Chinese food--both as prepared for Chinese folks and the Americanized versions (and unique dishes). Sadly, Corner Cafe misses the mark on all fronts. Two dishes that should be so easy for any Chinese chef are sweet & sour pork, and mapo tofu. The versions from Corner: SS was intensely sweet (like candy sweet) with the only visible veggie being a mountain of onions. I think I found two tiny bits of red pepper and pineapple somewhere in the goo. The meat was breaded and deep fried (American style) and fine. But overall it was mostly like eating onions and breading with sugar. Mapo tofu should be a slam-dunk easy dish. In this case it was a wet, soupy mess with no discernible flavor. We also ordered their version of General Tao's (aka Tso's) chicken. In this case it was just breaded deep fried chicken and a sweet-ish sauce with no anchoring or distinct flavor. I hate giving bad reviews, but in this case there was just nothing to like. The staff was friendly and the dining area clean and serviceable (we did take out). read more

We are so happy that Corner Cafe is open for dine-in again! It is so convenient to pop-in for a quick and delicious Chinese meal. The owners welcome you with such friendliness, and serve you very appropriately, so dining- in is a pleasure. We had some of our favorites, which are super-delicious, and perhaps even lighter in texture, and not greasy, While still being very flavorful. The wonton soup has a velvety texture that is very pleasing, with very meaty wontons. These are not the type of wontons that are mostly noodle. These have some meat to them. Bok choy and delicious cabbage add nice counterpoints in the soup. I have always liked their pork eggs rolls. But now they are better than ever. They have more ingredients inside and are more lightly fried. We also had the Shrimp in Lobster Sauce, and it was magnificent. They always use high-quality shrimp and the sauce is very elegant, with lots of water -chestnuts, just the way I like! Guys this is quite possibly the best (American) chinese food in San Diego!! This little gem looks like it just opened. It's not very big and it's more of a order at the counter or take out type place. Fairly small. Parking can be difficult but seriously a definite must eat. We had the orange chicken which was fresh out of the wok and just enough sauce to cover. I have terrible issues with chinese food places that serve with way too much sauce which I feel takes away from the dish itself. Also had the black and pepper beef. It was bomb. Bf had the jasmine tea which was equally good as the extraordinary desserts type tea, very high quality??? I think so. First thing I tried was a wontons and they were just soggy greasy not crisp the way they were supposed to be and they were nasty. I want to throwing them away. I took my dogs out for a walk and went by the Restaurant, and I said those are some of the nastiest wontons I've ever seen he said my wife cooked him. And I said well, I said they are not edible. He did offer to have her remake them, but if they're this nasty and she serve them once I can imagine what I'll get the second time so I said no. Once my dogs went potty, I tried the fried rice. The most flavorless greasy fried rice I've ever tasted in my life. This used to be a good place to get some nice to go Chinese food. Now they are serving trash.
