Hands down, my boyfriend and my FAVORITE bar in Boston! Besides being an awesome neighborhood bar, the food is also amazing! The pork quesadilla and white bean dip are appetizer favorites. The boy loves everything. Standouts for him are the meatloaf burger and reuben sandwiches, and I love the roasted vegetable sandwich! They all come with a side of either pasta salad, roasted potatoes, mixed greens, or chips. Great place to go chill, work, catch the games, relax, or drink up! Back Bay is full of tourist traps, Corner Tavern is not one of them. It's my favorite bar in the area. Good crowds, excellent atmosphere, wether you're here to socialize or watch a game. They have a couple of TV's and they're not intrusive so you can, you know, actually talk to someone without feeling like you have to combat explosions of sensory information from all corners. In that sense it's an old school bar. The food is excellent. Mushroom flatbread is a favorite. The sandwiches are also quality. For your side always go with the pesto pasta. read more

This is MY BAR. I love coming here. Sure, there are only maybe four or five beers on tap, and maybe the menus is only one page, but the stuff they have is just awesome. Actually, that's a great metaphor for the bar itself: not a lot of fancy stuff, but what it has is awesome. A few TVs on sports channels (with the sound turned off) and some music in the background (but not so loud that I can't talk with friends) make this a pretty chill place to hang out. Even when it gets crowded, the bartenders and servers keep everything under control and moving along. The bar tends to get crowded whenever one of Boston's sports teams are playing, but never so crowded that I decide to pass on a beer here. read more

I truly wasn't sure what to expect out of Corner Tavern, and still don't think I got the full feel. The location is perfect, right on Mass Ave near Newbury, but away from the crowds. Not only distance wise, but it is hidden tucked away in a basement part of an apartmnet building. It is very discrete and you would most certainly miss it walking by, had you not known to look for it. I enjoy the mystery. Once inside, it feels like your typical small bar. It is cozy, with limited seating, dark lights, and a laid back feel. The music stood out to me as being interesting, but not something I expected for this type of bar. I either expected throwback 70's or indie music, and the music playing was just neither, nor something I can really classify. When I came, I was about 15 min early waiting for a friend. I think the staff knew this, as they took their time coming to me, but they did make sure if I needed anything or not. It was dead.. It was about 630 on a Tuesday night, in the dead of the winter. The menu is a typical bar menu, but everything looked so very appealing. Of coarse, I ran into my typical problem of wanting too much, not saying no to my mind, and just ordering everything I wanted. So yes, I got the tatertots AND the grilled cheese. The tatertots come in a HUGE portion. It would have been enough for a party of 5, nevermind just myself... and with getting another meal. I also got the grilled cheese with cheddar cheese just plain. Given the plain order, it still didn't have much flavor. It was a good grilled cheese with the right butterness to the bread, the perfect melt ratio of the cheese. It just lacked the sharp kick I normally expect with a cheddar. Regardless, it is hard to impress me on a grill cheese, and lets just say I wasn't not impressed. But back to the tater tots... they were phenomenal! Best bar in the city! My husband and I used to live around the corner and this is the #1 spot we miss since leaving the neighborhood. The wings and tator tots are delicious. They are often playing 90s music loud enough to hear but soft enough to still have a conversation. The bartenders are all really friendly and chill. Definitely recommend this place! read more

A really nice brick-lined bar that's perfect for a little haunting on a weeknight. The tap list is short from my perspective as an Oregonian, but the beers were well-chosen. They had good choices for IPAs and session beers. This place is A-OK in my book, but nothing really stands out. It wasn't terribly crowded when we visited, but the service was still slow. I head to a tavern for solid fare like fish and chips or more typical bar snacks like nachos. Corner Tavern disappointed on both fronts. They didn't even serve french fries... Odd. The queso was pretty bland and I had to convince my fiance that the second half of his sandwich was worth taking home. My friend and I are visiting from California and walked in on a whim. Glad we did, the staff is so nice, friendly, and just generally pleasant to talk to. We felt right at home here and ended up staying a while and chatting with them. The bartenders were great and gave us great recommendations for what to do over our weekend here. There's something about this little gem tucked away under a brownstone that makes you just love it. My friends and I had been eying this for awhile, and we decided to celebrate my birthday there. It's not a loud place by any means. In fact, you'll probably be one of ten people there. But it's perfect if you want to go with a group of friends, not be bothered by weird people and just have fun. The food and drinks were really good. The bartenders and servers were super nice. This place makes me wish I lived on Marlborough Street just so I can call it my neighborhood spot. Delicious food, especially for the price. We did the mini grilled cheese with tomato soup, the ribs, and the meatloaf burger. The soup was outstanding, the ribs were great with an Asian sauce reminiscent of something I ate at Myers + Chang, and the meatloaf burg was sweeter than expected but still awesome with loads of crispy bacon on top. My date was unenthused about the beer selection, but that didn't bug me at all. Visited the Corner Tavern when I was in New England to bury some relatives ashes. Used the great public bike system to get around Boston from Fenway to the Harbor. There's a bike station about a block away from the restaurant. The great reviews of the meatloaf burger led me here and it was good but it was not really all that big and the price has gone up to $15. The spicy ketchup was good. Was trying to be healthy and probably made a mistake by ordering the mixed green salad as the side. The greens were fresh but the salad dressing was way too tangy/sour. Couldn't finish it. The bartenders were friendly and good conversation can be had with fellow bar patrons. Would consider going back to try something else........... read more

Came here after a concert as we needed FOOD and my boyfriend had been here when it was a different bar years ago. It was busy for a Tuesday night, but the staff was nice. The bummer was we ordered food and it never came... and it was going on an hour and I checked in and they forgot to put the order in! I figured we were SOL since it was well after 1 am at this point, but not only did they make us all of our food (and just offer up whatever was easy) - they didn't charge us. What a class-act! The AC is glorious. No really it is; it says so on the sign. Still haven't found a bar quite like this little gem which is probably why I keep coming back here at least once, sometimes twice and more recently three times a week. The food is great, they recently unveiled a new menu which is just a amazing as the last one. Make sure to try the mini grilled cheese and the ruben, you'll thank me later. Oh and the pasta salad is like sweet nectar of the gods. Yeah I like to eat, shoot me. But I'd have to say the reason I really keep coming back is the staff. They're simply the best. I've been to my fair share of bars and I don't know of any other place where they make sure I've got a nice cinnamon sugar rim of my Shipyard Pumpkin Ale every time or they don't judge me for liking my Goose on the rocks with 3 not 2 or 4 lemons. Down a set of stairs and hidden away from the busy Mass Ave streets lies a Boston barroom gem. I just only wish I had enough room to try both the talked-about Meatloaf Burger in addition to the killer Reuben sandwich that I completely devoured (I wasn't even all that hungry!). The pastrami was absolutely delicious, and the quality swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand-islandish dressing sandwiched between two crispy slices of rye was just exactly what I want in a Reuben. This is my go to watering hole, and the grub they serve up is no slouch either. A hole in the wall that is in no way divey. I may be predisposed to like this place, because I love downstairs bars. I dont know why, but they feel like home. It is simplicity well done: clean and nice, reasonable prices, friendly bar-keeps and a feeling of comfort. Especially during the winter, it just seems right. There is no scene or pretense, no hint of Back Bay douchery. No forced music. Just a bar. I have really enjoyed both meals I have gotten: the burger and the pork quesadilla. They werent spectacular, but they were comforting, satisfying and reasonably priced. This is a bar before all else though, dont expect a frilly dining experience. Im thankful that this place exists in my hood: it functions equally well as an opener, night cap, after work drink, or an afternoon meal and beer. *An extra wink and smile for having Eagle 10 rare to pour as mid shelf. My favorite spot in Boston! It's my go-to when I need to get away from crowds/tourists. Their food is amazing and their beer is always cold. I am a Mexican food junkie and their brisket tacos are AMAZING! By far the best tacos I have ever had (I know, sounds strange for a corner bar but TRUST ME!). Corner Tavern is a great spot to grab a couple of drinks or dinner in a laidback atmosphere. It was busy on a Friday night but not crowded; if anything, it was even a bit on the quiet side, so that my group was probably the loudest in the place (which led to the table of guys next to us admitting to eavesdropping on our conversation, and we weren't that loud). Corner Tavern is actually one of the friendlier bars that I've been to in Boston as I witnessed strangers mingling at the bar, people at adjacent tables starting up conversations, and even an amusing conversation with our waitress. The beer selection was decent, although I may be a bit biased since they had my Abita Purple Haze, and one of my friends characterized her Mango Martini as "strong but good." We each ordered a different appetizer - raclette with potatoes, pork quesadillas, a cobb salad, and the mini grilled cheese with tomato soup - which were good comfort foods and hit the spot. No one was able to finish their app, so the portions were good, and everything was plated very nicely. Our waitress was attentive, gave some recommendations when we asked, and was nice enough to put up with our indecisiveness. The best part of the night was when the check arrived, and we found out that our food was all 1/2 off, so our appetizers rang in between $3-$4.50. I can't remember the last time that a couple of drinks and dinner cost me less than $20, so I can definitely see myself becoming a regular visitor! read more

We love coming here, the location and atmosphere is great. One small issue that keeps resurfacing each time we visit is, the attitude with the bartender. Not to name names, but this petite blonde haired individual seems to be predictably crass and exhibits an overall sense of irritation when guests ask to order a drink. "Meatloaf Burger... Pasta Salad". During my four years in Boston I'm sure I said it more than 100 times. We truly became regulars of this spot. Tucked in in a very unassuming location in Back Bay, Corner Tavern is certainly a hidden gem in Boston proper. Great food, great drinks, and a "PBR Beer Special" which has been the daily special for at least four years make this place a perfect local watering hole for a night out or a quiet dinner at the bar. Oh meatloaf burger, we'll be best friends forever! I stopped in here last night for dinner for the first time. My boyfriend and I eyed the menu out front. Everything looked pretty good, but it was Mr. Meatloaf Burger who coaxed us all the way inside. I'm not the sports fan in the couple, but my boyfriend and I were both perfectly comfortable in this place for different reasons. Lots of TVs for him to watch, comfortable and clean atmosphere for me. It wasn't too loud, but it also wasn't dead quiet in there. The beer is a little expensive, unless you get the special. The food is reasonably priced, and a little eclectic. Pulled pork, crab cakes, Reubens, grilled cheese and tomato soup (any place that understands this combo is already cool in my book). I don't usually give 5 stars to bar food, but this place was a pleasant surprise! I agree with some of the other reviewers that the place has a laid back kind of atmosphere. They have a great lunch special during the week: select sandwiches are $5 with the purchase of any beverage. So, I went with the pulled pork sandwich and a lemonade. Apparently they do not have lemonade, so our bartender/server decided to make some for us! He made two glasses of fresh lemonade for us right there at the bar. The lemonade was actually delicious. It was not too sweet or sugary at all. The sandwich came with a choice of roasted potatoes, potato chips, mixed greens, or pasta salad. I went with the roasted potatoes, which were cooked perfectly and not oily or greasy at all. The sandwich also came with some delicious homemade coleslaw. The pulled pork was outstanding and the sandwich was enormous. The meal could have fed two. I look forward to more weekday lunches at the Corner Tavern! Great place! read more

Oh man, I just love this place. I wanted to setup a brunch for about 30 of my friends. Talked to the GM and he reserved all tables in the place without a hitch. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite places in Boston. I'm not even sure how I found it - probably on Yelp - but I first ended up here to watch a Pats game. The food is great and the price is fair for each item. I'm a vegetarian so to be able to find quality veggie offerings at a small bar is rare. The food has a high-end feel, but is your standard American fare. It's small so there aren't a lot of places to sit and the staff doesn't mind seating people who are only getting drinks which is kind of a pain if you're there for dinner. Also I'd recommend not ordering the flat breads as your main meal as they're quite small. Corner Tavern was a good place to grab a bite to eat and watch a game via DirecTV's NFL package . They have about a dozen smaller TVs that they're happy to change to the game you want to watch. The 2 servers were friendly and efficient. Beer selection was reasonably good, and we enjoyed the nachos (although I'm not a fan of cheese whiz) and the meatloaf burger, which was actually a burger made with a thick slice of meatloaf. Very cool corner spot with an even cooler curved stone counter area where you can sit and relax. We stuck it out at the bar, though and a had a great time. The place is half-submerged below street level in another unique touch that adds to the mystique. They offer a fine beer selection, but the real star is the meat loaf burger. Friggin delicious.
