This is a great, semi-hidden spot for drinks (solid variety) with some low key damn good food. Meatballs, French onion soup, & all the burgers come with your choice of side and you'll be regretting if you pass on the pasta salad. It's pretty much a second entree portion of great pasta (dunno if fusilli is the standard but that's what ours was) in a tasty pesto. And a must get is the tots. You can't go wrong with this spot. Hidden dive bar in close proximity to the end of Newbury. A/C cranked on a hot day which is much appreciated. Don't come here if you're in a pinch, food takes a good while. Super weird. 5 of us were hanging out minding our own business at a side table. Touched the low-hanging lamp over our table while talking. Out of nowhere, crazy-eyed guy came over asking if we'd be ok touching stuff at his house. Wasn't sure what that meant so he said he'll get a bouncer to make us leave. I asked the bouncer if he knew why he was kicking us out and he says it didn't matter, he had to follow instruction. Still have no idea what happened but obviously some power-tripping employees. Places like this shouldn't be like spotting a unicorn drinking star dust at an desert oasis - but thanks to a steady drip of closures, it's can be hard to find anything that isn't a pretentious, shiny clean, soulless, quinoa-laden hellscape in the Boston restaurant and bar scene. Love this place. I actually had friends that lived in this building many, many years ago and I know it's been a few different places over time. The best neighborhood bar in Back Bay. Definitely worth stopping in for a bite or a beverage if you are in town. The menu features creative takes on bar classics and ranges from light snacks to full on meals. The pretzels are a great way to get your meal started and the club sandwich is another highlight. They also do an outstanding job of keeping their drink menu fresh and often have hard to find beers from all over New England. The menu is never the same two visits in a row. The service is also friendly and welcoming. They're quick to strike up conversation or give an honest recommendation. They are particularly attentive and receptive when it comes to changing the TVs around in order to find whatever game it is you may want to watch. As an out of town sports fan this little bit of customer service goes a long way in showing just how much they care about their customers' experience. The Corner Tavern is like stepping back in time to when a local corner pub would serve all your purposes and you would have a great experience a great time and make new friends. The corner Tavern is located on the corner of Marlborough Street and Mass Ave. Parking is almost impossible, but you may get lucky on Mass Ave and get a meter. If you're lucky enough the time limit is two hours. Luckily this is enough time to enjoy some of the hearty food and grab a drink. My buddy and I stopped in here and we utilized that two hours to the fullest. As we walked down into the basement you know you were in a Bostonian bar it looks as if the bar has been there for at least 50 or 100 years great wood detail old photos of Boston exposed brick everything you want for a Boston bar experience. The venue is not large but they do have about 15 seats at the bar and an array of tables. We opted for the bar seating. They have about six or seven beers on tap they come out ice cold. They have a great selection on the menu we decided to grab a few grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato bisque. This was a great decision you can mix-and-match about four or five cheese selections, multiple bread selections and the sandwiches are grilled to perfection. The bisque was the right texture and the right amount to go with a sandwich for dipping and tasted fantastic!! I'll definitely go back again just to grab a grilled cheese. I came here for drinks on a Wednesday night. The bar is located below street level but is pretty easy to find if you look out for the brightly lit signs with its name. They have a pretty standard drink menu with a good selection of draft and bottled beer and cocktails. Prices were pretty standard ($4.50-$7 for beers and $11 for cocktails). I tried the full sail session lager ($6) and my partner had the down east cider ($7), both of which were quite good. They used to have $4 shot specials which they are no longer doing. The staff were friendly and service was good (although it was a slow weekday evening; I'm sure this place fills up on the weekends). We didn't try the food but from the menu, they have happy hour from 4-6pm ish with $5 appetizers, and a late night menu that starts around 11pm. read more

The Corner Tavern is a long narrow basement bar located at the BU/Charles River quadrant of the intersection of Mass Ave and Marlborough St, minutes away from the Hynes T stop. The single bartender covering the lunch crowd handled the parties scattered among the tables (five tall narrow tables which each sat 4, a table for 2, and a row of stools before a counter) in addition to the long row of seats at his bar. A soccer game on the flat screen tv entertained us as we waited for our food to arrive. The soup of the day arrived in the form of a neat triangular bowl of lobster bisque for $3 a cup. The soup was hot and creamy and tasty, with only little tidbits of the crustacean floating here and there (but that was mentioned to me ahead of time). I thoroughly enjoyed it. With the addition of an order of soda for $2, we were able to enjoy the Meatloaf "Burger" for $5 at lunchtime instead of the regular $9 (lunch time special price with the purchase of a beverage), while we selected the full priced Shortrib & Goat Cheese $10 as the other sandwich. Each sandwich on their menu comes with a choice of side - we picked the pasta salad and the roasted potatoes. The burger was the clear winner with its flavorful and moist meatloaf tucked within the soft bun. The shortrib itself was tender enough but lacking in flavor and moistness despite the addition of the goat cheese, herbed potato salad, and roasted red peppers between the tougher ciabatta type bread. The twisted pasta was a tad overcooked, but otherwise tasty in the pesto sauce. The roasted potatoes were a bit dry and didn't seemed particularly seasoned, but otherwise were okay. Two individual single bathrooms are tucked into a small hall by the bar. All chairs in here seem to be the stool sort, so if you aren't up for sitting perched up high during your meal, you might want to keep that in mind. If you aren't up for something alcoholic so early in the day, you could potentionally get out with lunch for $7 plus tax and tip ($2 for a soda and $5 for one of the sandwiches on the short lunch list). read more

We walked into an empty restaurant w exception of 1 patron at the bar. Nobody to be seen that worked there. When the bartender finally came out I asked "should we order from the bar or will we have a waitress?" His response "what, you've only waited like 20 seconds" He was rude every second of our meal. We cashed out and we're waiting for our Lyft -I saw a stack of chairs and pulled one off the top to sit in while we waited - he comes outside and says "you need to get up, I need to lock those chairs". Every now and then my travels take me to some real nice places and Boston's Back Bay is definitely one of them. Boat load of restaurant and bar choices on the main drags. However, if you are like me, you know the best establishments are off the beaten path. My first two nights here I visited the Corner Tavern. Built as the last neighborhood tavern in the back bay it did not disappoint. Atmosphere, service and food were outstanding. Both nights met some good people and had some great conversations. (2) Donovan's and Adam both made perfect Manhattans. Night 1 - Brisket tacos were fantastic. Night 2 a Meatball skillet was simply unbelievable. Meatballs were just like Mom made. Not Bad We went to The Corner Tavern for a couple drinks and were the only patrons for awhile. It was early, however, and some others came in shortly after. We enjoyed our drinks and conversation with the "Bar Keep" and others. We were given plenty of information about where to go and what to see. I came with some friends after work, and luckily we got a table before they got too crowded. For drinks I got the pamona royale and the blackberry smash, both were fruity, refreshing drinks perfect for the summer. We split the tater tots which was very good. Our flight leaving for Boston from LA was delayed 2.5 hours so we arrived late and hungry, and all of the kitchens were closed...except one. The Corner Tavern was amazing. Although it was late and The Tavern was busy, we were quickly seated and well taken care of. My bf and I went to Boston for the weekend from Miami. We ended up at The Corner Tavern and it was great. Danielle ( I think that was her name) was very informative and gave us lots of Boston information. It was really cold that day and although it was just us and another person in the tavern, we had a wonderful time. Loved the "neighborhood" bar feel. If you had to make a soundtrack to your life, what songs would be included on the list? Everybody knows this game, and it's not easy. Somehow, it has to be able to capture the volatility of you while you go through different life phases, yet be able to tell the story of growing up: From the rebellious teen who steals cheap beer from their uncles' basement so they can drive buzzed up around the local neighborhood in a beat up Chevy, turned college frat boy who convinces thinks 6 tequila shots chased with bud pitchers is a fantastic idea, to the 30s something who tries to get the bartender to put a sour gose on tap, because, come on, I'm a regular, this bar tells exactly that story: This biker bar hole-in-the wall, turned frat bar, to designated local joint, this bar is a must to check out. Atmosphere: First of all, it's sub-street level [which I already like], cozy and inviting. Sit yourself down at the bar to watch the game or the triple crown race, grab a bite off of their surprisingly inspired and higher end food for affordable prices [believe me, I will make my way through this menu] or learn how to play backgammon on a rainy Sunday afternoon. TVs around, amber lighting, juke box for most music tastes. [play something good, and preferably not a 40 minute phish song or 'what does the fox say' - the bartenders will not be happy with you]. Just an overall chill environment. Drinks: Craft beers on tap, local domestics or out of state, rotated for the season; my current go-to is the Dogfishhead Aprihop [7% ABV, amber pour, off-white head, light hoppiness], but your standards drafts are there as well. Drinks are mid and top shelf, medium strong pours, slightly oversized shots. Specials include $4 PBR tallboys, for all you wannabe hipsters who read Wikipedia, and a $4 shots special. Service is quick and friendly. Food: Regular, Brunch or late night or late night, it's sophisticated pub food [is that a thing?] I missed brunch for my first Sunday visit so they haven't passed my Eggs Benedict challenge, but the Short Rib Sandwich more than adequately made up for it. Amazingly juicy, a great portion for a hungry German girl or enough to share. It comes with garlic mashed potatoes on the sandwich [I come from a land of fries on a sandwich - I'm cool with this] which softens the taste of the horseradish Dijon and Blue Cheese. Be sure to get this with the sundried tomato and basil pasta salad. For snacks make sure to try to Pork Quesadillas or the Dips [and please do the math: 1 for 7, 3 for 10]. Thursday's there's a $2 taco special that I will be coming back for. Generous portions, great taste. Extras: Staff is quite down to earth, entertaining and helpful if you need them to be [being new to Boston I got a good insight of the city and what to do]. Also, they may be able to steer you in the right direction of finding a great new song for that soundtrack your putting together. I remain a huge fan of Corner Tavern. I still love the ambiance; Corner Tavern feels like my local bar, which is hard to come by in Back Bay. Crowd size is very comfortable, busy enough that I feel like I'm in a social, happening place, but thin enough that I never feel claustrophobic. If I have one complaint about the place, it's that Corner Tavern revises its menu fairly regularly and has eliminated some of my favorite dishes, like the Out of Control Grilled Cheese. Fortunately, I've made the acquaintance of the Rosalita, a turkey-gouda-ranch-pepperjack beauty that I can't help but order every time I visit. So, seriously. I've probably passed by this place 1,000 times in the last 5 years but had never been too intrigued. When I was searching for a brunch place Saturday morning I was surprised Corner Tavern kept popping up. After a few minutes of perusing the reviews and glancing at the menu I was convinced. The bar was small, sunny, and literally a hole-in-the-wall. We sat down at a high top table which made me a little nervous -- I like to have my feet on the ground when I'm trying new food. I was slightly upset that we only received the brunch menu instead of their full lunch menu but saw that one of the sandwiches I had been eying was on there anyway. Thanks for making my decision easier! My friend and I both went with the turkey and brie panini on cranberry pecan bread with a side of pasta salad. I'm actually surprised that I ordered that sandwich seeing as I really don't like turkey, brie or cranberries. I guess I was feeling a little adventurous? And I sure am happy I was because this sandwich. was. awesome. The pasta salad on the side was also really great. For $8 it was the perfect amount of food and left me feeling full, but not like I wasn't gonna make the 15 minute walk home. My other friend ordered a waffle which looked pretty good. Corner Tavern is exactly what it says -- a casual neighborhood bar with great food. It's located in a basement level of a brownstone in a neighborhood near Boston University. The site is cozy but not cramped. We visited on a high-demand night, but were able to be seated reasonably fast at one of the few tables. (This is primarily a bar, so focus is more on the bar and wall counter seating.) We were starved, and despite the high demand we were served quickly. For bar food, the fare was great! One in our party had a turkey sandwich that was like a panini, and another had a burger. Both of these entrees came with a side of seasoned new potatoes. Yum! I settled for standard soft pretzels, which were also delicious. Whether you're wanting drinks with friends, or a bite to eat, Corner Tavern is the way to go! read more

Atmosphere is a 3. Not your typical "dive bar." It's not the best place to go to see the locals in their natural habitat, it's just a divey type of bar downstairs in a very affluent neighborhood. If you want to go to a locals bar, hit up Bukowski's. That said, the food here gets 5+ stars. The pear arugula salad and tomato basil soup were outstanding. Worth the price ($12 for the salad), which is a little high for a supposed dive bar. What kind of dive bar has pear arugula salads anyway? I'd come here again, just for the food. read more

I was looking for some chicken wings and this little gem came up as being close and having good food. I went in looking for some standard bar chicken wings and the bartender talked me into their Memphis BBQ wings and WOW, what an excellent suggestion. These are slow roasted, then baked crisp wings that literally fall off the bone and the dry rub BBQ flavor is a joy to the palette! I can't wait to go back. The service was excellent, the food was amazing and the atmosphere was very "local". I loved it! If you are a wing aficionado and anywhere close, it is worth the trip.
