It was a hot sunny day in Austin and we needed popcorn. This gem "popped" up on yelp and we took a walk. It's a tiny place that reminds me of a real life etsy shop. The staff actually encouraged us to sample more flavors then we wanted to bother them for, and that's when we discovered we are more savory vs sweet. Jamaican jerk was his fav, white cheddar pretzel ale mine. The dill a close second. Will go back next time we're in town. read more

One of the fun things about the Holidays is the exchange of de minimis gifts from folks you probably only see once or twice a year. Case in point, this year i received a small bag of "Chicago Style" popcorn (which does NOT, apparently mean deep-dish) from a family member. For those unaware, that's cheese-flavored popcorn mixed with caramel-flavored. Sounds gross? Well, YOU'RE gross. You should try it. Seriously. So, that reminded me and the wife that we like caramel corn (when it's good). Which reminded me of seeing reviews from friends, and friends gone by, for Cornucopia Popcorn, relocated recently to the block north of St. David's Hospital on Red River. Having just spent a week in Colora.., errrrr.... Having just seen the "60 Minutes" (wow, I'm getting old) story on Colorado "dispensaries", the adorable room lined with gumball machines looked a bit familiar. And each one is labelled in a way that you can tell which (few) contain gluten, if that's important to you. Shopping at Cornucopia goes like this: 1) Walk into store 2) Get greeted by an adorably friendly gal behind the counter 3) Sample to your heart's content from any/all of the gumball machines 4) Tell said adorably friendly gal what sizes/flavors you would like 5) Pay 6) Wait a couple minutes, and then leave with your booty. And your popcorn. Sadly, I am a bit boring, and was on a quest for straight up caramel corn. And I did find (with a taste test later using the caramel and the salted toffee from Cornucopia) that we preferred the Trader Joe's fat-free caramel corn (which an article in the Huffington Post describes as "like rice cakes", not in a good way). But hey, personal preference and all that... Headed to a three-star review, I thought: You know, this place isn't just about caramel corn. Can I get "loaded baked potato", "salt and vinegar", or "Texas chili" flavored popcorn any time I crave it from the Trader Joe's? Would Trader Joe's be able to fill my order of 100 tins sent to my 100 best clients without missing a beat? Would I have ever met this one particular adorably friendly gal? Does Nicki D. really put "Dill Pickle" and "Birthday Cake" in the same tin, and, inexplicably, get completely excited about the prospect of doing so? Thankfully the Yelp app is current, because I got down to the Guadalupe location only to find they'd moved. I was SO glad this was BEFORE I tried parking at that old God forsaken parking lot.. BUT.. I found the new spot, and viola. Popcorn heaven! Lots of amazing flavors, but we refilled our quad-bucket with our faves. Dill Pickle, Birthday Cake, Tuxedo and Cinnamon Roll. For 1/2 off refills, the big bucket is always worth it. Especially if you have a bunch of littles that love popcorn. I truly love that you can try every popcorn in the store, and as much as you want. I suffer from a moderately criminal habit of abusing store samples. By my second-- sometimes third--appearance in front of the free sample booths at Costco (I affectionately call these visits the 'Tour de Costco'), some employees start giving me exasperated looks of disapproval (never mess with the lady who prepares the brownies; brownies are labor-intensive). Once, I was reprimanded by security because I'd crossed the legal threshold of sampling grocery Jelly Bellys. I think they threw around the word "shoplifting." In any case, I don't need to worry about oversampling at Cornucopia. Upon my first visit I rotated through the store's offerings (from sweet to savory to the chocolate-drizzled and back to the sweets). The proprietors seemed to be fine with this voracious sampling. I also drank their free water. Lots of it. Out of guilt, I bought a few bags of popcorn, which were all delicious. The kettle corn was especially good. The dill pickle flavor was good, though overly salty. I don't think the popcorn is that overpriced, since I sneak them into movies. Using movie popcorn math (or, the outside popcorn to movie popcorn exchange rate) the stuff at Cornucopia is a fantastic deal. read more

For the past two years I've been coming to this company to buy popcorn, and I have to say they are amazing! I buy a gallon tin each time my boyfriend's birthday rolls around. I always meet somebody different every time I'm in, they've always been wonderfully helpful and chill. If you consume a lot of flavorful popcorn I recommend getting one of their tins. They give you a huge discount when you come back to refill it. They cram three flavors of your choosing. The best part is you can sample all the flavors they have for the day, so no surprises when you get home, and something tastes... odd. : ) My favorite flavor? Champagne Pop! The new location is great. It Is spacious and parking is a heck of a lot easier! The staff is very friendly and filled my order quickly. I just finished off the kids size bag of sopapilla I bought on Wednesday. My husband inhaled the small bag of jalapeño ranch popcorn. There are so many flavors to choose from and they are not your run of the mill popcorn flavors. I discovered Cornucopia when I was in college and it was BAD NEWS, especially when they had free popcorn day once a month. I love that they have the "kids size" bag that is perfect when you just want a little bit. They do groupon deals often which is nice. And if you have a tin, you can bring it back for discounted refills. HOWEVER, you cannot use a groupon to pay for a discounted refill... that was kind of crappy. Over the years (between 2009-2012ish) their location on Guadalupe really deteriorated. The place was always messy, the floors sticky and it just didn't feel clean or sanitary for a place that made food. This is why I'm removing a star. I recently tried their new location and was quite impressed. Parking here is much easier and the store is cleaner than the old location, I just hope it stays that way. Flavors: Dill pickle is always good, if you want savory I also like the pesto, ranch, curry, and chili flavors. For sweet, cornfetti is a crowd pleaser, as are the chocolate covered options (but these cost more) and the caramel varieties are some of my favorites (lavender!). We discussed the types of flavors and so I ordered. 9 bags of popcorn. However I only received 7 and one flavor were crumbs. I called and left two messages for someone to call me back. No one did. I finally called again after the popcorn party and wanted to let them know how disappointed I was. the person I spoke to said they were busy and didn't get the message and they the two bags that were missing are flavors they don't carry. This place is definitely an experience! The store itself is very inviting. As soon as you walk in you see a ton of a sample containers of popcorn and the worker there told me exactly where to grab a sample cup and help myself to any/all the samples I wanted. The store is not stingy about people trying their flavors because they really don't have anything to hide. The popcorn flavors are unique and the quality is great! If you buy a bucket (any size) from here then you get 50% off that bucket amount any time you come back with the bucket for a lifetime! I was pleasantly surprised because she does random things like that but what to my surprise when I opened the box and saw this beautiful tin!! And lo and behold...what does this tin contain? Received a gift of Caramel flavor from work. Couldn't finish the bag due to burnt taste throughout. Thought maybe it was just overcooked sugar, but seeing flecks of black so was likely some burnt popcorn rather than the caramel itself. Checked with others that received a bag in the office and they reported same issue. For a restaurant whose business is popcorn; they should be able to provide quality control and throw out a burnt batch rather than using it. read more

They have lots of popcorn flavors and they are on display so that you can try them. However most of the bagged popcorn is stale and the flavorings are not right. This isn't the best popcorn I've had. I tried various flavors in the store and nothing stood out as THAT FLAVOR. The dill pickle does not taste like other dill pickle popcorn so that was a disappointment and it's their most popular flavor. It's missing a salty kick. The herb and garlic was lackluster as well. I did like the Mexican hot chocolate and another spicy flavor I can't remember. Also, the popcorn is pretty pricey but if you get a tin that saves lots of $$ in the long run. I am willing to give it another try but as I said, none of the flavors blew me away like I expected. read more

(Red River is so much easier) On Saturday I bought a 6.5 gallon, four flavor, for my moms birthday party and it was a HUGE hit with the kiddos and adults. Okay, so, here is my opinion on this heavenly delight!!!! First, popcorn is probably my favorite snack of all time. Pretty healthy (depending on your poison) and filling..... Second, this place is so Austin-ish.... Ran by some pretty amazing, "hippies" always super friendly... May show up late to open sometimes... But, not that big of a deal, what-so-ever; their kindness and amazing establishment is well worth the Facebook stalking filled 15 minute wait in the car :) third, when I die...
