One of Fresno's nicer fine dining establishments. I have been here for dinner in the past but haven't been here for their lunch before, so wanted to try one of their salads. I didn't make a reservation but wish I had. They were actually pretty busy on a Thursday afternoon, and their tables are really close, not giving me enough privacy to talk. It was actually kind of creepy, because the small table we were given was across the aisle from a table but right next to our faces was glass that you could see the other diners right immediately next to you. The service was excellent, though. Our waitress took great care of us from start to finish, made sure our drinks were always filled and made sure we were happy with the taste of our lunches. She even offered to change my friend's sandwich when it looked like she wasn't eating it. The food: I ordered the Chinese chicken salad and it honestly seemed a little small. It's a little less expensive than a few of the other salads on the menu so maybe that's why. It had a small amount of shredded chicken, a few peanuts, crispy noodles and red pepper, and lettuce. My preference would be a little more cabbage than what it has. My friend ordered the spicy chicken sandwich. The slaw and pickles were awesome and the chicken coating was good; however, the chicken tasted a little rubbery. I am hoping we just picked the wrong items this day. Some of the other salads on the menu looked good, and the sweet potato fries are the bomb here, so I will definitely be back to try something else.

Plate #2, meat under seasoned, potatoes were not good! How can you not serve worthy potatoes? The portion should larger, too.

Post-workout day recovery meal: First time eating here. Considering all the weight lifting I'm doing, many meals are focused on protein along with whatever else I'm ordering. With my target (Maxes) in focus, I reviewed the pictures/reviews on Yelp as I often order based on which pictures appleal to me. I hit the website directly to preview the menu PRIOR to even going. I knew what I was going to order so headed over. The restaurant was a nice comfortable temperature. Thankfully, the music was not loud at all! The restaurant is nice enough, fairly roomie, so no complaints there. It seemed to be filling up at a brisk pace.. I also spotted lots of to go orders! The service here was excellent, but the food left me wanting... enough, so that I stopped off at Whole Foods to act as the chaser! :) I ordered the filet mignon with asparagus that was served on a overly cooked puck of bland potatoes... I ordered the meat to be cooked medium and so it was, perfectly! The meat was under seasoned and would've been much better if it had been salted earlier. There's no salt shakers on the tables. When I see that, I usually expect that the food would be seasoned well. That was not the case... The asparagus was cooked perfectly, but the potatoes were complete miss. The small portion was too small.... And it wasn't something that when you tasted it you wish that there was more of... Potatoes rarely disappoint me, but they did here. Not rich, tasty and tasted old and a LARGER IMPROVED portion would have been nice. It's like the cheapest ingredient in the kitchen so please size better and change that dud version! Because my pecs are demanding, I ALSO ordered the Chinese chicken salad. While good, that's not something I would order again... Starving from my previous days workout, I ate everything. The meal was not large enough for any thought of leftovers.... Honestly, I thought the food would've been much better than it was. I left still hungry... My lunch was $70 plus the tip. I would definitely return at some point to try dinner, especially if they start making the chicken Marcela again! Most people would enjoy eating here... IF their pecs are as needy! -G

    Thanksgiving dinner to go

Thanksgiving dinner to go? You bet!! We stopped by to pick up Thanksgiving dinner for two (pre-ordered), since it was just gonna be me and the hubby on Thanksgiving day. The girls at the table outside were very helpful and friendly. It didn't take long for our order to be ready. Fast forward to dinner time...there was so much food! Salad, rolls, turkey, stuffing, fresh green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy. Even huge slices of pumpkin pie! Everything was great! Thanks, Max's Bistro, for making dinner so easy!

I had only been here before for their brunch but this time we went for dinner, we were with a huge group of friends but nonetheless the waitress was attentive and got everything correct. The food was great! Came out hot and fresh. My only complaint was the filet mignon wasn't tender enough. It was very rare and chewy. But other than that everything else was great including the short rib. We got their dulce de leche bread pudding to go and that was the cherry on top!! Very very tasty!

8/11/25 Lunch date! Great! The restaurant is VERY classy & nice! We had waters and both got avocado turkey sandwiches with side salad. Waiters & waitresses cater to your every need! Our waters were refilled constantly and after a small wait, we received our lunch! It's A LOT! Really fresh & DELICIOUS sandwich. He thought his was GREAT too! Fresh & tasty side salads too! Both have leftovers too! Great service & GREAT lunch! Thank you Max's! Highly recommended!

It was really busy and we didn't have a reservation, but I got lucky enough to grab us seats at the bar! The bartenders were kind, courteous, and fun. The food was brilliant! I had the Scallops on Parmesan Risotto. The bread with oil and balsamic was also immaculate.

The filet minion was perfectly cooked medium and seasoned just right. The Ahi tuna on the tostada was out of this world amazing! The french quarter shrimp had great flavor. Staff were super friendly, Sierra was always there for us and was very accommodating. The place had good seating and nice fine vibes.

Location: Max Bistro Date: August 22, 2025 Service: Birthday Dinner Party Located in Fresno on Westbrook Avenue is Max's bistro and bar. I was invited there for an event for a friend's birthday dinner. This establishment offers private dining. It's quiet all usually is busy when not too busy. I have been there before for a previous event and the food is always amazing. The price is on Point for the area. Myself I ordered the orange soda and have the filet mignon with asparagus and potatoes au gratin. He was for a table of 15 people. Our server was Michella overall did a outstanding job serving and assisting us at the table of 15 people. The birthday girl she was having a fabulous time they even offered gave her a $75 gift card for her party which she is able to use at anytime when if she chooses. I had a great time socializing with everyone and seeing people I haven't seen in a long time and enjoying laughs. Great food is a great experience at Max bistro bar. Check out the photos attached to this review.

This is definitely one of the Top 5 fine dining places in town. We started with some of their craft drinks, mine being the Apple A Day. Excellent. Next was the French Quarter Shrimp with the shrimp cooked perfectly. The sauce it was in was so tasty. Chopped wedge salad was next and it was good but there was a ton of blue cheese on it. Could have done with less. The main courses were the short rib, whose sauce and was outstanding, cooked to perfection and the roast chicken with mushroom risotto was also juicy and flavorful. Just a great experience and great food.

Thank you Max's for an amazing birthday celebration today in your beautiful private room for parties. Service was exceptional as always and table set lovely.

Max's has been one of my favorite local restaurants for many many years so this review is LONG overdue. I enjoy meeting friends to share appetizers at the bar and sip on the tastiest dirty martini. We love the bartender, Daniel (Cambo)! This last visit, we ordered calamari and the potstickers which were absolutely incredible. The calamari comes with both cocktail sauce and the most scrumptious lemon aioli. The breading on the calamari is perfectly light. The duck potstickers come with 6 or 7 pieces so it was a nice split with 3 people! I skipped lunch that day so I was still a little snacky after sharing the 2 apps so we asked Daniel what else to get. He recommended the French Quarter Shrimp. We hadn't had those before (and I thought I've tried the whole menu haha) so we took his advice and SO glad we did! They came in the tastiest sauce, big shrimp with the toasts to soak up more of the flavor. I'd even be happy with the strimp and a salad for a light solo dinner. I'll leave this review to the recent apps but know that the dinner and lunch menus are just as fabulous!

Ask the Community - Max's Bistro & Bar

Do they have gluten free options like pasta?

    Is Max's open on Sundays?

    Yes and they do brunch.

We have out of town guests in about a month who require outdoor seating. Can Max's accommodate them? This would be a lunchtime party of five.

    Is there outdoor dining?

There are 2 tables on the sidewalk between the door and the parking lot, so you'd have people always walking by you to get into Max's. The inside is nice, with a bar area…

    What are the lunch hours?

Max's website lists a daily opening of 11:00 am

    Reservation needed for lunch?

Negative. Rolled in around 12:30 on Friday and got a seat right away.

When making the reservation, i made a note that it was our anniversary! When we arrived and checked in, the hostess acknowledged our anniversary, as did our server! Very hospitable that they acknowledged it, as some other places don't. The food has been great both times and the portions are generous! Some high end places get a little skimpy, especially with the sides. Not here! This time around, I ordered the Prime Rib, got the whipped potatoes and substituted the Brussels sprouts. Both were generous portions. Also love the added touch that they'll give you fresh horseradish to go along with the horseradish cream for a little extra kick. My wife had the Ribeye, which we've both ordered before, and it's delicious. She ordered the cashew green beans, but they were very saucy and some were burnt. When brought up to the server, she said she would have the kitchen make her a fresh ordered without hesitation. Within a few minutes, a nice sized portion of fresh Cashew Green Beans arrived! The Wedge Salad is also delicious and generously portioned. It could actually be a meal for someone, if so inclined. The atmosphere is also very welcoming and private. We've sat inside and on the patio, and actually preferred the patio seating! I can't say enough about the hospitality of the staff though. There's a gentleman who is either the lead host or a manager, that's been there both times. He takes a personal interest in the customers and makes sure to visit each table, which you don't often see. As we were walking out, he was also walking out behind us. Even though we were a few steps ahead, he wished us (again) a happy anniversary and to have a great night! This is a special place in Fresno and a great choice for a special occasion. He explained the menu really well and got everyone's drink orders. It felt like it took a while to get some of our food after we ordered, and it almost made it seem like they wanted us to keep ordering drinks while we waited. We were there for about 2 hours just eating and drinking. Now the food... it was honestly SO good! I just wish the portions were a little bigger for how much everything costs. Don't get me wrong, the food was delicious, but in my opinion it's definitely on the pricey side for what you get. The Truffle Mac & Cheese was really good, but it was such a small portion. The Crispy Bluefin Nigiri was probably one of my favorite things we ordered! It has crispy sushi rice, bluefin toro, honey-cashew sauce, avocado, and aged ponzu. It was SO good... but it's only like five little bite-sized pieces for $24. It was delicious, I just couldn't get over the price. The Mushroom Risotto was also really, really good! And my favorite meal was probably the Spicy Shrimp Bucatini. It has shrimp, Italian sausage, fresh bucatini, Calabrian chili, Grana Padano, and toasted breadcrumbs. The flavor was sooo good! We shared it, but honestly I could've eaten the whole thing by myself. If I go back, I'd definitely order that as my meal. For drinks, I tried the Frozen Summer Margarita, and it was so refreshing! It has watermelon, hibiscus, basil, and citrus, and I really liked it. I also tried the Pool Boy, which has gin, watermelon liqueur, cucumber, basil, and citrus. That one was really good too! The restaurant itself is super cute inside! The only other thing I'd mention is that when we were leaving, there were a lot of people hanging around the bar, so it was a little hard to get to the bathrooms. Not a huge deal, just something I noticed. Also, if you're going with a bigger group, just know they automatically add 18% gratuity to every tab. I totally understand why they do it, but with the menu already being pretty expensive, it definitely makes your bill go up fast. Overall, I really did like Saizon! The food and drinks were delicious, and it's a really cute place. I think next time I'd go for a date night or with a smaller group instead of a big party. Just be prepared that it's a little pricey for the portion sizes, and if you're with a large group, don't forget about that automatic 18% gratuity.

However, it is definitely worth it! For a while now I have been wanting to try this place and finally for around to it. The staff was great very kind and friendly as soon as we walked in. Our waitress was amazing, she was always checking up on us, making sure we had everything we needed it and that we were comfortable. I ordered the Fried Chicken Biscuit with Tater tots and for my drink I ordered the OG Lemonade. Starting with the sandwich, the chicken was nice and juicy, very crunchy as well. The flavor of the chicken was very good as well. The buscuit added that nice hint of sweetness that just tied the whole thing together. The tater tots were definitely crunchy, which I loved. They give you a very well serving of tater tots. I did not end up finishing mine, but they had great taste and texture. The lemonade was very refreshing, and it just hit that spot so well. It was appealing to the eye and tasted like freshly squeezed lemonade. Overall experience was 10/10, I would come back. The place gives off vintage coffee shop vibes even though it is not a coffee shop. Seating is definitely very limited inside. However, they do have outdoor tables with umbrellas which is a nice touch. Price-wise I would say it is a bit pricier compared to other similar restaurants I have visited. The total came out to $45 for two plates of the chicken biscuit and two lemonades.

I opted for rice instead of fries to balance all the fried food. The rice was a great choice but I did not expect the serving to be so massive. It was three of each item along with the coleslaw. The container wouldn't even close and it was given in a massive paper bag just to accommodate the weight. Huge serving and very satisfying. My favorite was surprisingly the fish, then shrimp, then oysters. I did not even come close to finishing all the fried deliciousness. I'll definitely be back to try something else and probably bring a friend to split the food with.

And you get HUUUUGE portions of everything. Truly blown away by the portions. If you want A LOT of food, you'll get it here. Great value! ORDER: Wanted chowder & crab but they had neither. Calamari: Decent! I like the onions. Triple Play (6 pieces of fish, fries & coleslaw): HUUUGE pieces of fish that were nicely moist. Tempura Veggies: Not tempura batter. Same batter as fish. Wouldn't order again. Head-On Shrimp: Fried too long so they were hard. Wish they'd been not so hard. Overall, I'm sure many will like this place, but my problem is the batter is too thick & not at all seasoned. This is somewhere between American & Chinese, but doesn't truly lean into either. Lemon or some acidic slaw are essential to cut thru the fried. Ketchup & hot sauce would help. Tartar sauce wasn't great. Having some non-battered/fried options would be really great. Still, I might try them again. Hope they reach their target audience.
