Wish I had used them, compared to what happened with the company I did use. Alex came out - had the demo's - well spoken nice guy. Average estimate. I liked that the company is an older established company started by the joint effort of 2 or 3 men who were friends and their families. I think they would be able to communicate with their workers well. Tips on getting a roof: Make sure they are going to use the flat boards with silver lining - don't know the name - on top of your roof if they strip it. You can actually put shingles over an existing roof of composite shingles - wish I had done that. You do not need to start clean state if the roof is pretty much intact. They can put strips down vertically and put the insulated silver boards on top of that. This really helps with cooling on the part of our house this was done. Find out if they will replace the wood flashing or edging. Don't let them put a lein on your house for the materials. Pay the materials people directly. Count the materials. Watch that they do not take them to use on other projects. Get in writing - that no materials are to leave your property that were purchased or taken off of your house until the end when you give permission to have them take it (ahh... except if they strip your house let them take all the old shingles - it is more if they cut into the house - we could have used some of the parts where sofits were put in because of how awful it was done). Use 30# (not #15) tar paper and get it in writing. Have separate gutter people do your gutters or plan on paying more for the peeps they say the don't subcontract out too. Ask for the sofit vents and cobra roof vent if they are putting more air circulation in. Make sure the insulation is not blocking them. Don't let the roofer put new insulation in, get that separately done. Don't let them cover up what has fallen inside. Don't let the people they send to take the roof off - put 8-10 people on the roof from Home Depot Line Up. Go visit their place of business and talk to the staff and take a couple of their names down first and last. See my other roofer reviews. Now the above is in general - I did not use Comos only recieved and estimate and checked them out.... but they have got to be better than the people I used. And I liked and trusted Alex. I just went with the guy who came with the flashier presentation and the neat workshop business that I realize is just an employment agency for unemployed roofers or those who say* they are. I sincerely believe Alex and his families company will have more experienced roofers that they actually know and can communicate with. read more

After getting 6 bids for our re-roofing of our two story home in San Jose. Cosmos roofing won our bid and we are really happy with our choice. They are a very professional company to deal with, showed up on time and completed the work in a speedy fashion with excellent workmanship. Their transferable guarantee was also a big bonus for us. I was seriously impressed when we hit a series of issues with the old roof (roof rot and bad beams) and they were quick to find a solution and were extremely fair in their cost adjustments. I'm going to echo a lot of the points made by "Rcw W." - we have an Eichler house with a flat roof and it takes real expertise to do them well. Case in point, we tried a first re-roof 4 years ago with a different company and it was a real nightmare: leaks after two years, very poor drainage, etc. I asked Rich to come and take a look. He has a no-nonsense attitude and immediately spotted where the problems were and how they could be solved with some simple changes or additions to the structure. The bid was really reasonable and once the work was started, it was completed quickly (3 days) by a professional crew. I know the work is good from practical experience: interestingly, we had the first significant storm of the season the day after the work was completed (it rained continuously for about 4 days) and the new roof performed flawlessly - no leaks and it drains so well it gets totally dry in no time after the rain stops. I highly recommend Cosmos Roofing to anyone, especially owners of flat roofs. read more

We had Cosmos install our roof for our old house and they did a fantastic job. So when we got a new house I called them up for the new roof installation. Alex was great as usual and helped set up not only a good time to get the roof done but also helped me find a good contractor to remove and re-install our pool solar heating panels. The installation went smoothly and they even provided sheeting to protect items in our garage (the old roof was a type of concrete that was very messy to remove). The only issue that came up was one of the gutters was damaged a bit during the roof removal but Alex sent someone out to fix it as soon as we found out. Would definitely use them again. read more

Alex and his team at Cosmos roofing did a great job installing a new roof for my house. The installation was done smoothly and cleanup was good as well. They also installed a sun tunnel and skylight and taking care of termite eaten rafts etc., After a few weeks, my sun tunnel was not working as it got disturbed by the crew who did re-ducting work. We interviewed and received 5 different bids from a variety of roofing companies in our area (West San Jose). I would've saved time if I had just went with my 'gut' after reading through all of the various roof replacement bids. Some were incomplete in terms of what additional work may be required and didn't include references or details on the materials (besides shingles) they'd be using in their work. The COSMOS bid was extremely thorough and professional. The COSMOS bid included an offer to reattach the basketball hoop over the garage (no other bid even mentioned the hoop). When I contacted the other companies about some of the items COSMOS mentioned in their original estimate - guess what? Yep, more $$$ to cover the items COSMOS openly mentioned in the original. After a few weeks of reviewing, calling, and researching, we finally decided to go with COSMOS (even though there were some other bids that were lower than COSMOS). My decision was based on the QUALITY of my first encounter with the company - the estimate. That is, If a company put enough time & quality in their bid, then I felt they'd do the same for our roof and home. I don't think I need to explain the excellent results. Some of these other 5-star posts explain exactly what my experience was after the job was completed. I do want to mention that I can tell that Alex is a good leader. I learned this from my talks with Alex and some of the guys on his team. Great leaders and teams produce excellent results. I just wish I had gone with my first 'gut feel' after reading all the bids and gave COSMOS a call that day. We made an agreement with Cosmos to do our roof 20 days ago. Rich Cosmos called me today and cancelled the agreement saying that he is too busy on other jobs, and can not do the job for us! It was very disappointing. Now we have to start looking for another roofing company after loosing three weeks, and re-arrange all electrical work that was already coordinated between our electrical person and Rich Cosmos. I should mention that Cosmos did this to us in spite of the fact that we had our exiting roof done by them several years ago. If Cosmos can do this to its established customers, what should the potential new customers expect from them? It appears that there is no professionalism/integrity in the way they do business. Extremely professional! Our consultation included a thorough inspection, many brochures of information, and a list of address of houses they had roofed in our neighborhood that we could go visit. They are very knowledgeable. They are discouraging of alternate materials, such as rubber and solar tiles. read more

Alex is polite, professional and responsive. He went out of his way to bring shingle samples, provide references of prior jobs and explain the features and benefits of different options. He suggested we go with a lower grade shingle, telling us honestly that the higher grade would not offer much given the slope of our roof. The job was started on time. His pricing was very fair. His crew used a blower to blow out the debris from our garage at the completion of the job and picked up most of the debris in the yard and around the property. It is a messy job. Time will tell how well the roof holds up through the rain and the years. It looks good so far, and it seemed like Alex is committed to delivering a quality product and service. On the downside, his crew accidentally punched a hole in our ceiling and accidentally damaged a wooden stand in the garage near the roof. They will fix the hole in the ceiling. Ladders were left lying on and against bushes and plants. If you want to pay by credit card, make sure you ask in advance to arrange it. read more

I am often in a position of referring contractors for various specializations including roofs. I am also involved in work with Eichler and other mid-century modern style homes. In the course of years of my experience, I have never worked with a roofing contractor of the caliber of Alex and Rich at Cosmos Roofing. I have used them in multiple projects over the past years and have been totally satisfied with my experience. Eichler homes and other properties with flat tar and gravel roofs require a degree of expertise which very few roofing contractors evidence in their work. Rich, whose focus is on the tar and gravel work, is amazing. In any case involving a tar and gravel roof I would not consider using any other contractor. I have seen so many examples of poor application with disastrous results Nobody does this better than Cosmos and I trust their experience and judgment implicitly and refer them without reservation. Alex is the pitched roof specialist and he shares Rich's high standards for excellence. The clients I have referred to Alex and Rich are all completely satisfied with the results. In addition to the high quality of work and after-project follow up, their pricing is extremely competitive. It is unusual in my experience to combine both the best quality with reasonable, competitive pricing but this is an occasion in which it applies. I imagine that my glowing review may seem over the top to some extent. However it is entirely justified by the experience I have had with Cosmos. I take great pleasure in referring them exclusively. I called Cosmos for a roofing estimate to replace my roof. There was no rush but I knew it was time to replace. Cosmos came out, climbed up on the roof and I watched him measure and take notes. He did let me know that work couldn't be started until spring due to the amount of moisture in the air and to the work demand for El Nino. Weeks go by, maybe two months, I call them to remind them they owe me an estimate. No return call and have never received my estimate. If the business is this poorly run, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere. read more

June 2010 and after inviting at least 6 contractor to bid on a new roof I chose Cosmos not only because their price was very competitive, but their bid was comprehensive with all the pertinent info such as warranties and recommendations. There was no preassure to select them and their approach was very sincere , honest, and open. They were also extremely respectful and prompt. Let me say this. Rich Cosmos stands by his products and warranty. I have had a few issues with our roof since installation in fall of 2008. In each instance, Rich had a technician out the same day I called and they promptly resolved the issue. To me, with contractors and housing work, what they do after the work is complete and they receive your money speaks volumes. Many others would put their past customers behind potential new customers but I don't get that impression with Cosmos Roofing. read more

Can't say enough good things about these guys. They installed our roof on a remodel in 2008--no problems until this past March, when a leak opened up in our kitchen during a big storm (on a Saturday night, of course, which is when such things always happen). I emailed Cosmos and had a response from Alex by 9 am Sunday morning and an appointment first thing Monday morning. They came out, found a small crack in the caulking around the chimney, fixed it, and boom--done. Just about 36 hours from leak to fix. Cosmos bid on our house to re-roof our entire home. The home originally had two layers of roof which were removed in one day. The crew that worked on the house were extremely respectful and left the job site cleaner than when the job began. It wasn't a small project, and it was completed from start to finish in 4 days total which I believe is amazing! Everything went extremely well! We had a shake roof that would not have made it through another rainy season. Alex from Cosmos was up against about 4 other bids from companies that also had amazing yelp reviews. My parents used Cosmos for their roof in the past, and love their roof, but insisted I get bids from other companies just to make sure I do my due diligence as this is my first home. Cosmos was very competitive with the other companies, and in my opinion offered more in terms of service and coverage compared to the other companies. Most important was my main point of contact, Alex. He always answered the phone whenever I had questions, dropped off samples on the same day I requested them, and made me feel at ease.Cosmos offers all the same materials as the other companies, but it's the workmanship that counts the most. Then last year they did my residence with a very high quality wood shake roof called Teal. Alex, one of the owners, came out to bid the jobs each time, then he additionally managed the job. He is extremely knowledgable, always verp professional and was always easily contactable. I was very nice to have one person to deal with, one of the owners, directly. I wanted to give an update on my Cool Roof that Cosmos Roofing had installed in April 2013. Now that summer is in full swing, I do notice a difference with the 4 inches of insulation. My house is much cooler in the summer and doesn't bake like an oven when I get home in the evening. Here's another plus for Cosmos: I had gotten new downspouts with the roof and found that one of them was condensing from the morning dew right next to my bedroom. The water droplets were created a constant high pitched metallic sound, causing me an unrestful sleep. I called Rich Cosmos and he sent one of his men out. They were able to change the bottom of the metallic downspout with a plastic elongated tube. The water no longer made that sound and the water is diverted away from my wall. Plus, it was no charge! As we both realized from the start, this project may not have been a large one, but the challenges were many dealing with an unconventional corrugated metal roof on top of a very questionable and unstable supporting understructure.
