Costa Brava offers an energetic, lively atmosphere with dark woods and soft lighting. Owner Javier runs a bustling spot with tons of people. It does get a bit loud, including some street noise from car exhausts outside. It makes for a fun experience, especially for a lively group dinner. THE FOOD * Pulpo a la Gallega: Sautéed in olive oil and paprika. Tender, thin slices. The fresh lemon adds a bright acidity that balances the dish. * Gambas al Ajillo: Garlic shrimp treated very well. Tender, juicy, and highly flavorful. * Patatas a la brava: Hot potatoes coated in a creamy ali-oli. * Choricito frito: Delicious sautéed chorizo sausage. * Pinchitos de solomillo: Grilled filet mignon skewers. While the cook made them quite tender, the beef flavor was a bit off. I would recommend sticking to their phenomenal seafood instead. * Paella mixta: A classic presentation of saffron rice, chorizo, chicken, shrimp, and mussels. * Spanish creme brulee: A perfect finish. Wonderfully creamy underneath with a crisp sugar top. THE SERVICE Michael was our server and provided great service. He was attentive, knew the menu details inside and out, and provided excellent recommendations to guide our meal. OVERALL A solid tapas dining experience with great service and standout seafood.

This place is a must-visit in San Diego! We came here to celebrate my dad's birthday, and it truly exceeded expectations. The food, vibes, and ambiance were all 5/5, it made the whole experience feel extra special. Huge shoutout to Matt for the incredible service and for going above and beyond to make our celebration memorable. Also loved how pet and kid-friendly it is. The patio area was perfect and made it even more enjoyable for everyone!

One of my favorite restaurants for 15+ years. We miss the pescaditos. But their entire menu is fabulous. Will be honest we were heartbroken when we went a couple few months ago and found our favorite Spanish server Jaime is no longer working there. He really made this restaurant feel like home. Jaime wherever you are Pita, Jacobo and their parents miss you! We wish you the best. Thank you for giving our children beautiful memories of Spanish cuisine. Costa Brava provided delicious cuisine but you made it feel like family y te estrañamos.

I would rate our dinner here a 4.5. We made reservations in advance. Parking can be tricky since it's street parking and the lot across the street does not allow parking so you're at risk of towing. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. He suggested getting bread with the meal so we could soak up all the sauces from our dish. We tried the croquettes with jamón, gambas al ajillo, and patatas brava. For our entree we shared the oxtail. The oxtail was super tender and the sauce it came with was great. We all shared a sangria pitcher. It was a nice dinner. Food is a little on the more expensive side but the food was good and we had a very nice experience.

One of my favorite restaurant! The Sangria is good, food is amazing. The staff is very friendly and I love the vibe here.

What a delightful dining experience! We arrived on a Saturday at 4 pm, earlier than our reservation at 5 pm) and the waitress gladly seated us promptly. This restaurant is bigger than it seems - there are multiple seating areas like the front patio, bar, a front and back room, as well as a well secluded back patio. We were sat in the back patio and immediately appreciated the ambiance of the place. There were string lights above us, lots of plants around and even got a lit candle on our table just as the sunset started. Our server, Matt, was really outstanding. He was friendly, funny and went out of his way to give his personal opinion on the top dishes to order which we ended up ordering most of! Their menu is very extensive - there are cold tapas, hot tapas, soup/salads, and entrees such as a family style seafood paella. Tapas are meant to be shared since they do come in smaller plates, but don't be fooled, they do fill you up quickly. Here's a quick breakdown of what we ordered: Boquerones: Delicious! Pickled fresh anchovies in olive oil, accompanied by fresh garlic and parsley. Nice and tangy. I highly reccommend this if you love pickled foods! Salpicon de Mariscos (marinated seafood salad): Nice variety of seafood with a refreshing marinade. Hints of green bell pepper as well - good to order with hot tapas to help cut some of the heavy foods. Gambas al Ajillo (shirimp in garlic): Plump shrimp in a smokey oil with lightly fried garlic and a fresh lemon on the side. Good, but not something I would order again. Pulpo a la Gallega (Octopus with olive oil and garlic): Extremely tender smokey octopus. I'm very glad we decided to go with dish off a recommendation. My favorite of the day. Tapa de Rabo de Toro (braised oxtail in red wine sauce): Fall off the bone tender! Incredible oxtail, very hearty sauce and comes with some potatoes. I recommend trying this! Croquetas de Jamon: We ordered this since we didn't order Jamon on its own, and this was our way of substituing it. However, because it is a croquette, it's mainly deep friend potato with a subtle salty taste of the jamon. Crema Catalana (spanish style creme brulee): By this time, we were stuffed but couldn't pass on dessert! This was very delicous - not too sweet, very creamy and slightly nutty. A great way to end dinner. Overall, I'm very happy to have dined here and look forward to coming back to try more variety in the near future! Parking: Street parking only, recommend arriving early to find a spot Bathroom: Conveniently located in the center of the restaurant, 2 rooms. Great for Parties: We saw 3 large parties during our time there. This place can accommodate parties of 12-15 people from what I saw. I would call to make reservation for large parties in advance.

4.5 so rounding up to 5! It was a rainy night and we were looking for somewhere that was pup friendly with a covered patio area. We don't do tapas very often so we were sure what to get or how much to get but our server was super helpful! We ordered: - pan y Ali oli (house bread) - rabas (fried calamari) - zanahorias morunas (pickled carrots) - gambas al ajillo (shrimp in garlic) - champinones al ajillo (mushrooms in garlic) - patatas à la brava ( potatoes with "spicy" ali oli) - salmon relleno - crema catalana (Spanish creme brulee) - capricho helado (vanilla ice cream with strawberries and caramelized sugar) We really enjoyed this meal! Things came out pretty fast which was great because it seemed busy. My favorites of the tapas were the shrimp in garlic and the patatas à la brava. I loved the aioli sauce the potatoes were in. I would have like the calamari more if it had a sauce? It definitely was missing it and i found myself scraping the leftover patatas brava sauce. Our server did say he was gonna bring us sauce but it never came. Salmon relleno was pretty good - it's salmon stuffed seafood in a lobster bisque sauce. I wish this dish was... Hotter? Temperature wise, it was just warm. Their crème brûlée is really good and I would probably get that again but charging $10 for some ice cream and strawberries (the capricho helado) is kind of much.

The service and atmosphere were great. We got the chicken salad, tuna empanadas, and the garlic shrimp. For two ladies this was more than enough. The ti to de verano was so good. Our waiter was very nice too. I would definitely recommend coming here.

San Diego's most famous Spanish Restaurant! I enjoyed my time at Costa Brava and would recommend it for the tapas! Parking Free parking on the street along Garnet if you're lucky. Service/Wait Time/Aesthetic I thought based on pictures that it was only an outdoor restaurant but they do have an indoor area! My group was seated with a reservation easily and the service was very good- the server was Spanish and he knew the menu very well and the food came out really quick! Food/Drinks They only have red sangria and it was good, definitely recommend a pitcher! There were so many tapas that our group ordered but the two I liked the most was the Bacon wrapped dates (Datiles con Tocino) and the oxtail (rabo de toro). They were both very savory and delicious! Tapas that I thought were just okay was the Spanish tortilla, shrimp in garlic, and patatas bravas. There's a creamy sauce on the patatas bravas that I did not really care for. Their paella was just okay- I thought it was expensive- about $30 per person and there was no crispy rice! I would recommend going to Costa Brava for a fun Spanish tapas time.

Oxtail in Rioja sauce with potatoes

The food was excellent! The oxtail in Rioja sauce was excellent! Salmon stuffed with seafood and the porter house steak with peppers was good as well. Our server Matt provided great customer service and made the experience relaxed and pleasant. Great atmosphere as well.

EVERYTHING was amazing about this restaurant! Probably one of my top five restaurants in San Diego. The ambience was super chill and amazing. Our server, I forgot his name, but he's definitely from Spain... He was amazing! All his recommendations were great. We sat in the outdoor seating area with my service animal. They were so nice to her! The food was absolutely incredible! I'm definitely coming back here again. Oh and they're crème brûlée. Chef's kiss. I think I'm gonna come again tomorrow! I left this restaurant feeling so happy and my belly was so full. Honestly, can't wait to come back!

    Fiammetta P.

Good service but overall disappointing. We had the gambas à la plancha and pretty sure they had been frozen as the skin was very hard to peel off. The paella was also meh and not crispy but rather soupy. The crema catalana was good and the sangria ok. Would not go back.

    Patatas a la Brava
    Bridget B.

Every time i've been to Costa Brava, I am reminded of what always wish I go more often. A little gem on the east side of garnet, you would drive by it and almost miss it. But once you enter, you're transported into a huge authentic european style bar/restaurant fit with an outdoor patio as well. The service is fantastic and the ambiance is truly unmatched to anything you experience in SD. The dishes are all tapas style and easy to share. I'd recommend ordering a few dishes between two people because they can be small but they are well priced. The absolute star of the show is the potatoes - cheesy creamy crispy and delicious. The sangria is fresh and delicious too. Would highly recommend this spot to anyone!

Ask the Community - Costa Brava

    What is parking like?

It's hard to find parking. I usually try to park on the streets right behind the restaurant even if I have to walk a little. It also depends on what times you go. Late in the afternoon is not hard to find and sometimes there is parking right in…

Do they have live music? I need my flamenco and Gipsy Kings vibe.

How do you get seated inside? I've come here a handful of times with a reservation and every time we walk past multiple open tables inside and get sat in the back patio area.

They get busy, I would call days in advance and reserve

Do they split the check if there is a large party of people?

Not sure, ask them first. In general, I rarely do that. One person usually pays and then rest pay…

    Is there parking nearby?

Street parking, but it's the luck of the draw. If you can walk or catch a ride service, you'll find it easier. On a weeknight (not Friday), it shouldn't be a challenge. However, Costa Brava is worth it!! All the best.

    When is Happy Hour?

Happy hour is Tuesday - Thursday 5 pm-6pm for 1/2 price Sangria and a selected menu of Tapas at 1/2 price. I believe this is only at the bar and the seats fill up quickly at happy hour.

What days of the week and what time do you have flamenco dance?

Are the owners and chefs Spanish?

While I didn't meet owner / chef I believe yes. The people serving us were definitely from Spain

    Casual attire OK?

    Definitely!

Does this place have live music?

They have flamenco dancing on Sunday not sure about live music. just call them.

What are the must gets at this place? There is so much good stuff to choose from!

My boyfriend and I always get Papas Bravas, everything is amazing! You really can't go wrong. The Ox, I believe is a good choice. Croquetas are some of my favorites along with the mushrooms.

I see that they have outdoor seating - does anyone know if they allow small dogs?

Yes they do, on their patio.

Do you have to sit at the bar for happy hour?

No- we have had happy hour on the front porch

Do they do brunch? Is there a menu we could see?

I'm pretty sure they don't do brunch. You can see their menu at their website www.costabravasd.com. I highly recommend this restaurant

I'm looking for a vegan friendly tapas restaurant, does this restaurant offer vegan options?

I don't think this is your place.

Would this place be suitable for a big party of about 40 people?

You'd probably have to rent the entire place for that. I'd suggest giving them a call.

Went there yesterday (Friday) at 5pm and sat at the bar for happy hour. My check came with full price. Asked them and they said no more happy hour?? What happened?

Happy Hour is Sunday - Thursday from 4pm-6pm Come and enjoy 1/2 price Sangria and a selected menu of…

My server, German, (his name) enjoyed helping me create the ideal light supper and allowed me to try a few Spanish wines (they have so many!). I settled on a Verdejo from Rueda. It was the right balance of fruit, acid, and slight floral to perfectly pair to my meal. I had the seasonal fish meuniere - white fish delicious and crispy on top (my favorite), garnished with capers and roe. It was accompanied with a tender lettuce and heirloom tomato salad with saffron dressing. The leftover dressing for the salad was the most amazing vinegar dip for a couple tater tots when I got home. The dressing was something I will go back for! Thank you, Barra Oliba for the perfect Spanish "girl dinner!" Can't wait to come back and try the Paella!

This place exceeded every one of them. Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, Wolf in the Woods feels like a hidden European café you'd stumble upon while traveling. Sitting outside beneath the umbrellas with a cocktail, watching the neighborhood stroll by. It felt like a little corner cafe in Paris. Then the food arrived. Every plate was beautifully presented, but the real magic was in the creativity of the flavors. The combinations were unexpected, yet every one worked. Every dish had me wondering how on earth someone came up with these pairings in the first place. The Sweet Corn & Piñon Soup deserves a standing ovation. We literally stopped talking after the first spoonful. Rich, savory, slightly sweet, comforting and completely unexpected all at the same time. Both of our eyes rolled back in our heads. The Beef Tataki completely surprised me. The outside had a delicate seared crust, the inside cut like butter, and the citrus pairing made me rethink what flavors belong together. And the mushroom and polenta dish? The mushrooms had an incredible texture--like savory little pieces of mushroom jerky. I would have happily bought a pound of them just to snack on. Every dish felt like it was taking me somewhere I'd never been before, yet somehow felt familiar at the same time. Wolf in the Woods creates an unforgettable experience.

On the wine front, Gata absolutely delivers. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, and it's the kind of place where one glass quickly turns into two because there are simply too many interesting options to pass up. Unfortunately, the food didn't come close to matching either the quality of the wine program or the price point. We ordered the deviled eggs, which turned out to be hard-boiled eggs sliced in half with a piece of ham placed on top. When you order deviled eggs, you generally expect, well... the eggs to actually be deviled. We mentioned our disappointment to the bartender, who was wonderful, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable to talk with. The explanation was that this is simply their interpretation of deviled eggs. Fair enough, but it wasn't an interpretation that worked for us. Ironically, the standout dish of the evening was the pigs in blankets, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write about an upscale wine bar. They were delicious, but they also raised the question of why the rest of the menu wasn't reaching the same level. Looking back, we realized we were the only people actually eating while everyone else was there for the wine. In hindsight, that should have been the clue. I only wish someone had mentioned that before we made the trip over expecting a tapas experience. Gata has so much potential. The atmosphere is lovely, the wine selection is excellent, and the staff were fantastic. If the small plates eventually rise to the level of the wine program, this place could be truly special. Until then, I'd absolutely recommend it for drinks, but probably not for dinner.

Love that they created the ambiance with real candles. Talk about living on the edge. I had planned for dinner and a show. Luckily some of us showed up early and reserved great seats for us. Close enough to hear and see, but far enough not to get heckled. Upon returning, the bar line was long. My guess is they didn't staff for a full house tonight. One drink took really long, the other one was wrong. Since the line was so long, he didn't want to wait again to have them fix it. We understand mistakes happen. Overall cool venue, stellar talent and will return for live music or comedy show.

They literally serve budget frozen dinners heated in a microwave and charge $25 a plate. My girlfriend's eggplant Parmesan was still frozen in the middle. The comedy is free, the venue has to make money, I get it. But either have a kitchen and serve real food or charge $15-$18 for $3 frozen dinners. Don't charge $25 a plate to microwave budget gourmet frozen dinners from Vons, shameful.

I visit Havana Grill whenever I want some tasty oxtail.  I noticed oxtail was one of the specials.  Last time I visited the oxtail was on the regular menu and you could order it anytime. Oxtail was extremely tender and juicy.  The mix of beef flavor and the spices in the sauce were delicious.  This is my favorite oxtail dish in town. French fries were crisp and had a delicious fried flavor.  The oil was fresh and there was no aftertaste.  Excellent fries. Pineapple upside down cake was dense and did not have a fresh baked aura.  The outside part was starting to harden like it was getting stale so I guess it was baked at least a day ago.  Cake had a mostly mild flavor.  I didn't taste the pineapple though the top was lined with it.  I did taste a ton of ginger flavor.  It appears pieces of ginger were mixed in with the pineapple.  I love ginger as part of soy/ginger seasoning for fish but not in a cake.  This is one of the worst pineapple upside down cakes I have had.  My favorite is at Roy's where you have to give them 30 minute notice and they bake it to order.  Roy's version was piping hot out of the oven, was moist and fluffy, with amazing pineapple flavor. Staff provided fast and friendly service.

With all the choices in Pacific Beach, are you sure? Yes. I'm sure. With both indoor and outdoor seating and a staff that lives to accommodate, this is one of the top 5 on my list. We start with Ceasar Salad, bread and wine. Each is to its' perfection. The Salad is perfectly presented, perfectly dressed. The bread has what looks like butter dripping out, but is actually cheese. And the Wine is from Orvieto Italy. Robyn has been there and makes this great suggestion for the wine. What's next chef? We eat small portions of the Orecchiette  Bosco and Capellini Pomodoro with Shrimp. We save the rest for lunch the next day (and next day it's even better)! We are saving ourselves for dessert, Robyn's favorite part of the meal. We order Pistachio Cheesecake (not with cream cheese but ricotta), Tiramisu and Pope's Pillow (probably because after you taste it you think you died and went to heaven)! lol All three are nothing but perfection. It's great for date night later in the evening, girls night, family night if you go early. And there aren't too many other places I'm thinking about going back to and taking San Diego Foodies and Carlsbad Foodies to! This my friend is IT. Let's go! VINYA VINO + VINYASA…read more I came here with a few girlfriends for their Brunch Flow class, which includes a post-Vinyasa mimosa. When you walk in, the space is a fun surprise with an open concept including a restaurant/bar on the right and a yoga studio with a small retail shop on the left. It caught me by surprised and at first, I thought I went into the wrong door haha Nope, it's just a big space. I forgot my mat, but they rent them for just $3. Inside the studio, everything was spotless. The blocks looked brand new and they had these beautiful handmade blankets that added a cozy, personal touch I haven't seen at other studios. I used it for my knees during certain poses. The instructor's playlist was engaging yet soothing and set the perfect tone for class. FOOD After class, instead of the included mimosas, we grabbed fresh orange juice and a nonalcoholic kombucha and both were delicious. I ordered the Burrata salad and it was outstanding: creamy burrata, fresh arugula and perfectly toasted walnuts. One of my friends ordered the green eggs and loved it as well. SERVICE Everyone we interacted with was friendly and helpful. We made our reservations beforehand online without any issues, check-in was quick, renting the mat was easy and the staff at the restaurant side were upbeat and welcoming. It all felt very effortless and organized. AMBIENCE The entire space is decorated beautifully. It felt warm, modern and inviting. The restaurant side has plenty of seating for small to medium groups and the layout makes the yoga-to-brunch flow feel seamless. It's a unique space that feels both energizing and relaxing. It was a perfect vibe for us to have a girls date doing yoga and then grabbing food after. PARKING HUGE plus: lots of parking. This spot is in a strip mall with a shared lot, so parking was plentiful and totally stress-free which is something I always appreciate when heading to a class. I recently discovered they're on ClassPass, so I'll definitely be coming back and signing up for more classes. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a fun yoga experience with great food and great vibes!

We're sitting at the bar as usual, they know our drink preferences! Soccer and baseball on the tvs. And then it was time for hockey. 2 screens of hockey 2 screens of soccer over the bar. I told the bartender I didn't want to see guys beating each other in the head while eating my dinner. He said we don't normally have fights on but the owner requested it. I mentioned that there are children sitting right behind me. We asked for the check and a box for the rest of my meal. So disappointed. Do better Luce's.
