So much sugar!!!! I ordered through DoorDash because it was well rated and I was craving green chile. Ordered the sweet pork burrito with green chile sauce and chicken enchiladas with green chile sauce. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, so I know my green chile ( and yes we call it green chile not Hatch chili, because not all green chile comes from Hatch. It is literally grown all over the state of New Mexico)! They do their green chile sauce 100% wrong!!! Green chile sauce should be tangy and bright with onion, garlic, salt and pepper... that's it! This sauce tasted like it was meant to be a pie filling! It was so sweet you couldn't even taste the natural flavor of the chiles! The sweet pork also just tasted like sugar, no other flavors to it! Also, white rice?! I'm wondering if these people even know what Mexican, Tex Mex or New Mexican food should taste like! I'm amazed that this restaurant has as high a rating as it does! I really wanted to like this place because I love fresh mexican food. The decor is modern, ambiance is lively. Looking at the long line on a Sunday afternoon gave me high hopes...Sadly I was quite disappointed. We got the seasonal special mango chicken salad and vegetarian enchiladas. The enchiladas looked sad! No sauce, barely any cheese on top, way too dry. What makes them enchiladas and not rolled tacos? The sauces lacked any spice and salt, too bland. I went and got the honey habanero salsa and even that is sweet. And just fyi...I do not eat very spicy food, never even think of eating anything with habanero in its name! Also, the lettuce in the salad was too wet and discolored, the tortilla had turned soggy and chewy. Just not my taste for mexican food! read more

We have been here a few times and have enjoyed it. This place is always busy it seems like and the line can be 25 people deep during prime time. The line does go by quickly though. You order your meal up front and select what you like. I've had both the shredded beef and chicken nachos from here. Both have been very tasty. They pour queso on the nachos and then shredded cheese on top before it gets heated up. Both the shredded beef and chicken were very flavorful. They do give you a great amount of chips but I would ask for extra protein and it's a small portion. The queso here is also very good. I'll come back and try other items off the menu soon. read more

The line peeps act like they don't want to talk but you have to because we have to tel them what to put on our plate. Food was ok rating my partner says. Very clean is what I liked the most. Very Americanized. They gave us a military discount and I so appreciate that. Thank you. I love tamales. No tamales. I love white sauce for chicken enchiladas. No white sauce. They didn't ask if I wanted anything on my plate except beans and rice. My partner got a chicken bowl and he didn't like that I didn't get asked if I wanted cilantro cheese and more like he was. It is *disturbing* how obsessed I am with the sweet pork tacos here. I can't try anything else. I go in and look at the menu, see the daily specials, and think "Yes, I'm going to order something new!" And I get up to the counter and out of my mouth comes "Two sweet pork tacos on corn, please! Cheese? Why YES!" Their tortillas (corn and flour) are made in house. Since most places the corn tortillas are not even in the same realm as these, I keep coming back for more. And two, the dining area (and bathrooms) are beautiful. Who would have thought that such a nice dining area like this one wouldn't have a wait staff. Unfortunately that's were the good stuff ends... The food is mediocre at best. Ok, the rice and refried beans are pretty good, but beyond that I've never been completely satisfied with the overall meal and I think I know the reason why. Costa Vida wants to run itself like a Chipotle. So they give you the option to build your plate (tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc.) with an assortment of different items and sauces. But (like most places ran like this) this creates it's own set of problems. You see, having options can be a good thing most of the time. But with food it seems that the blander the items are, the safer the options become for the restaurant (Subway for instance). So you typically end up with (mostly) ok food. I don't mind them keeping the options, but I would like them to give me the option to choose my meal "the Costa Vida way" as well. You know, where their team of chefs have already put together the best possible combination of meal options to maximize the overall flavor of the food. So anyhow, I would suggest going during the specials or with a coupon like the one I use. Otherwise, you'll really dislike this place for the price you paid. I love this place!! The food is so fresh and made to order. I usually get the sweet pork taco's as it is one of their specialty items. It is a bit sweet but if you add cilantro and onion, it all sort of balances out in a good way. The flour tortillas are big, homemade and tasty. The burritos are big and tasty too- get it with queso sauce and you won't be disappointed. Their cilantro lime rice has a good flavor and I don't usually like rice, but I like this. You get your choice of pinto beans or black beans. I love the sweet tea and you have your choice of cubed ice or crushed ice. The only tiny issue I have is the kid's meals. The portions for the entree is small and it comes with rice and beans, which kids 7 and under don't usually eat. I've gotten smart and just order the cheese quesadilla for my five year old, the portion is perfect without all the extras he wouldn't eat any way. The staff is ALWAYS cleaning. I mean always. The floors, walls, counters, tables, ice tray- you name it, it is spic and span. I think maybe people don't like it here because they expect tex-mex and this is more California style. read more

I liked it! First of all they opened their doors a few minutes early to get their patrons out of the hot sun ! That was an unexpected act of kindness. They make their own tortillas right there where you can watch ! Yum! I had their daily special and it was great . I love Costa Vida and no one should compare it to Chipotle as they are two different kinds of Mexican food. Costa Vida is more like Californian Mexican more than true Mexican. The queso and guacamole is amazing and so good. I go here often just for that. I like how they put their burritos in the oven to help it stay together. The steak fajita and shredded beef are so good. What an absolute joke. Received a printed coupon for "one entree with purchase of one entree and 2 non-alcoholic beverages". Clearly states that it cannot be used with coupon on smart phone. So -- went to the costavida.com website, placed the order. No where on the coupon does it say that the website cannot be used to place the order. The coupon has the website listed on the bottom! Then called the restaurant to confirm that we have a coupon we want to use. First was told: restaurant will not accept on-line orders with use of coupon. Huh? Not listed anywhere on coupon. Then was told: restaurant cannot cancel the on-line order. Huh? After discussion, the manager finally agreed to cancel the order - I provided my name (and she acknowledged she had the order) and told me to cancel the on-line order myself (which you cannot do - says you MUST call the restaurant location) - and that I should then come to the location and place a new order which they will accept the use of the coupon for. Then was told the coupon would not be valid because the drinks were small (not regular or large). Huh? No where on the coupon is that stated. But if I wanted to cancel the order (which I clearly cannot do), drive up the location and place the order again - with 2 larger sized drinks - then I can get the coupon use. And then when I asked the manager what amount would be credited back to me - to confirm the correct order - she HUNG UP ON ME. read more

Yummy California-Mexican food. I love their chicken salad - huge salad on a tortilla, with salsa, cheese, beans, rice, and their ranch style house dressing. It's kind of like Chipotle, but better and it feels more fresh. We'll be back again and again. read more

All the meats have some type of like flavor to it, and the chips have done sort of like salt to them that I just can't shake. They do offer buy one entree get one free coupons every once in a while. In the past I've always enjoyed my experience at this location, but their quality of service has definitely declined. I'm not sure if they have new management, but after a recent visit I will not be returning. After ordering online, I was given the wrong order. When I called to let them know, I was told it was because someone had a similar name -- really no big deal at all. I went back to the restaurant to pick up my food again. Sadly, when I returned home, I found it was my original order that they had not bothered to keep warm or remake. I was given cold food =\ I had to wonder whether the person who received my food by accident had handled this food and then returned it... Was this second-hand food? This place was pretty good. You should know off hand that this a huge high school hangout. Probably 80% of the people inside were in high school. The service was mostly ok. It's a bit confusing, ordering, if you've never done it before. But the people serving up the food (kind of Chipotle-style) didn't really give much explanation, they mainly seemed annoyed that I didn't understand that when I order Tortilla Soup, I'm *building* my soup, which is definitely cool, but I felt really rushed and pressured and awkward while ordering it. We got chips and Queso which was ok, nothing very special. Good, but nothing spectacular. I appreciate healthier drink options though. Vitamin water, for instance, from the fountain. That was cool. The Tres Leches cake was ON POINT. I will definitely say that. It's a great place to go and get healthy food, or straight up junk food. Which is always a good thing. I definitely won't be craving it, or go out of my way to go back. But if my friends want to go here, fine by me. read more

I like the vibe of the place and the staff was friendly enough. My fiance loved the chile verde nachos. We ordered a sweet pork taco which was a shocker for me. I read "shredded pork" and it was so sweet, I hated it. I put onions and cilantro in it and it was still horrible. I LOVED the shredded beef enchiladas with red sauce and onions. It reminded me of my favorite enchiladas from California. I really want to go back for them, but stay away from the pork. Its horrible! read more

I was looking for more of a sit down restaurant when I walked in here and to my surprise found a Chipotle-esque burrito joint that was obviously surf obsessed. I ordered the steak fajita burrito (called the kahuna burrito for it's size, and probably because it's a surf-sounding word) and it came wrapped in a nice puffy tortilla set in a foil tin that you popped popcorn in back in the old days. It was filled with the exact same cilantro-flavored rice that Chipotle serves up but it didn't taste as good. The rice was HEAVY on the cilantro and it practically overtook all of my taste buds so that everything else tasted only like cilantro. The beans and meat were average, nothing to complain about, but nothing to write home to mom about. I also ordered chips and queso as a side and the chips tasted JUST like chips you find at On the Border, and they were kept in a metal drawer under the mini-conveyer-belt-heater. They were ok, crunchy, but they needed a lot of salt to bring out any taste in them. Despite lackluster chips, I do admit, the queso was a bright spot. It was hot, spicy, and thick, you could almost compare it to the queso you get at Chili's. All in all, I won't be going back and I prefer Chipotle over this place in the area of "big-burrito-meal-with-fast-moving-lines-and-loud-people." read more

With all the great reviews on yelp I expected the food to be way better. I ordered the Baja Bowl with steak. For the price I paid I was expecting larger portions. The serving size of beans, rice, and steak were incredibly small. The food was cold and it kind of lacked flavor. I was really disappointed in the food. Freebirds and Chipotle are sooooo much better than this place. The food wasn't horrible but it wasn't good either. I'll be getting my Mexican food elsewhere next time. read more

Ahhh...Costa Vida, loved it when it first came to be. Love the sweet pork and the mango chicken salad can be pretty good as well (besides the soggy tortilla). Today, I went in and the pork was good but the lettuce on top of the taco was too much for my liking. Also, you had to quickly eat your pork tacos before the tortilla became complete separated much. Black beans accompanied the poor rice. How hard can it be to create a complimentary rice? Maybe pretty hard. On to the reason for this post...we got dessert (my fave thing besides the pork). If you've had their 3leches, you know that it comes with sliced strawberries. There weren't any and when I inquired if they stopped serving it with strawberries, he simply said they ran out ("sorry"). Nevermind letting us know beforehand or apologizing before I discover it. :/ Additionally, the key lime cake didn't come with a slice or lime, which it used to (no biggie). Lastly, their Tres Leches is much better with strawberries, so boo. read more

Costa Vida is to Cafe Rio what Microsoft is to Apple - a mediocre attempt at copying someone else's great idea. Except for Costa Vida is like the copy of a copy, diluted just enough that it's a bit difficult to track it back to it's roots. About the only thing that hasn't changed is the foil tin the food is served in. Knowing what this place could be is what makes it so disappointing. I can't figure out how they did it, but Costa Vida managed to suck the life out of the outrageously cheesy, spicy and fresh flavor I've come to expect from every item on the menu at Cafe Rio. It's not like it's terrible, it's just underwhelming. Although I wouldn't go so far as to compare it to Windows Vista, let's just say it's the XP of dining. Pretty good, but not great..... First, the concept of standing in line waiting for your food prep has never really been my thing. Costa Vida is very Chipolte like in this sense....service was efficient and polite, as others have noted. Food was...well...a little better than bland. Rice was just OK, black beans were very good, and meat (sweet pork and chili verde) were again, just OK. Actually, sweet pork was a little sugary for my taste buds, a sentiment that was echoed by my son. Pico was tomato heavy and bland, but tortillas were also very good. But overall, nothing memorable. One criticism is that once you are through the line with your food and seated, going back to food serving area to get anything else (and having to wait in the slow moving line again) is out of the question. One idea would be to have a dining room host or two circulating and asking if patrons need anything else, or want to order other items...ABC - Always Be Closing.....(we specifically did not try the desserts because no one wanted to get back in line, and I would have enjoyed trying the other enchilada sauce as well). Overall, just an OK place. I guess for fast Mexican I prefer Taco Bueno or Rosa's, and Chipolte for the burrito thing.... read more

Walked in and called again, watching the manager walk over look at the phone and walk away. I understand you are busy, however that's not the best way to handle it. Costa Vida is seriously one of my favorites. I love the casual atmosphere and it is always clean! During busy lunch/dinner hour you will probably find a long line. But don't let that stop you! It moves pretty quickly and is totally worth it. I've tried many things on the menu and have never left with a grumpy stomach. Chicken enchiladas are my go to, but the sweet pork quesadillas are TO DIE for!! Don't forget to get the delicious chips & queso. Oh and to make things better..they have great drinks and great happy hour prices! Win win, my friend! The service is great. Everyone is friendly & do their best to keep the long line moving. Costa Vida is a new Mexican eatery in Collywood. It's got a tropical atmosphere and is not a restaurant where you are served. There is a lit up board of food choices. FOOD: You stand in a line a choose what you want to eat. I chose the fish tacos, because my friend who took me there said her husband enjoyed them. The choices are tacos, enchiladas and some other things that seem pretty good. There was a baja bowl that looked interesting. You also get to pick the sauces and a type of beans, pinto beans and black beans. PRESENTATION: They put your food in a foil tin, rather then a plate. The tin helps keep your tacos standing up. Good call. There are some flour tortillas. They put them on a circulating table. It was cool to watch them puff up like a blow fish. They throw all this food in the tin, and then whisk it away and then about 30 seconds later they ask you what you want on it. They put a guacamole ranch secret sauce on it. Then they add some pico and lettuce. It's what they suggested and I am all about what the taco is supposed to taste like. Make the decision for me. I also ordered some queso and chips for my friends and we sat. TASTE: Flour tortillas are generally soft, but once they were done they were firm. Not crispy like a hard taco shell. It was really a cool texture. It was super yummy and the secret sauce was great. The rice was white and fluffy, and the beans were not mushy, another firm type of beans. I prefer al dente food. The queso was an odd taste, not super awesome, but it was all right. The chips were good. They also have 2 choices for the ice. Cubes or crushed. I like having an ice choice. I had a chance to try this today with a colleague. The food is styled somewhat like Chiplote. The key difference is the restaurant is much larger than the standard Chipolte, and they run your 'burrito' through a oven very quickly to get it hot - super nice touch. Pros: Prep area where they make your food was SPOTLESS - the entire place had NO smell at all -which means it is very clean (A+) Service was great, friendly and fast Price was very good esp considering the mountain of a burrito you get. Cons: I ate too much.. ;) I recommend this place highly! read more
