Review #16 (in my quest for Greek food) Good news : They had Moussaka on the menu. Bad News: They forgot to add potatoes to the Moussaka. WTF??? I called the waiter over(who turned out to be the manager's kid) and asked for an explanation. I told that that I grew up on moussaka and had it many ways but NEVER without potatoes? It has three basis layers. Potatoes on the bottom, then eggplants or zucchini or both, mixed chopped meat and topped with a nice creamy bchamel sauce. Simple. So where are my potatoes??? He ran in the kitchen to get answers. Minutes later I am visited by the whole Greek clan. A nice bunch. They told me how sorry they were but the cook did not add any in this recipe. No reason why...just happened. We all laughted about it and they gave me free desert on the house for going alone with the joke. So folks, beware. If you LOVE Moussaka as much as I do...you might want to ask first if this comes with potatoes today? The first time I came to Costas I thought it was alright. The service was a little slow, but it was late on a Sunday night. The food was pretty good. I had the Seafood Caesar Salad. My fiance and I went there for the second time tonight. We had been seated for five minutes before our waitress even came over to greet us. It took fifteen minutes to get some soup, and forty five for our entrees to arrive. I'm not kidding. We were so bored we timed it. I could understand all of this if it was busy, but it wasn't. Only about half the tables were full. Not once in all the time we waited for our meal did someone come over to apologize for how long it was taking or offer to refill our drinks, which were pretty close to empty long before our meal came. When the food finally arrived, it wasn't even very good. The meat sauce that came with the spaghetti had an unusual sweetness to it, almost like cinnamon, that made it close to inedible. The lemon chicken tasted of olive oil, not lemon. The most amusing part of the entire dining experience was watching my fiance considering to dip his garlic bread in the spaghetti sauce and then changing his mind. The only reason I'm not giving it one star is that the Seafood Caesar was pretty damn good. We won't be returning. read more

Good food, friendly staff, comfortable décor. It's a Greek place, but has a wide variety of food, including traditional sandwiches, Italianesque pasta dishes and traditional breakfast dishes, which are available all day. I'd recommend the spanakopita and the saganaki flaming cheese appetizer. (Get the saganaki. It's fun, yummy and a unique experience.) Watch out for Sunday lunchtime. Costa's is popular with the local after-church crowds, which means the food and service slow down. Also, the Monday/Tuesday food quality is not as good as other days of the week. Aside from Sunday lunchtime there are always open tables (it's a bit big) so there's no waiting. There are lots of good food options for kids. The food was ok. I had a Couple of appetizers (Filo pastry filled with spinach I won't try to spell and fried artichokes.) Both pretty greasy. My husband had a sandwich he said was pretty good. Portion size was good, prices were a bit high. The service was TERRIBLE. Once we got our food we NEVER saw the waitress again and sat waiting for at least 1/2 hour after eating for the bill. Heaven forbid if we had wanted something else during the meal, like a coffee refill (oh yeah, I DID. Oh well.) instead, she was upstairs eating lunch with someone, very much taking her time. Another server finally noticed us sitting and got our waitress. She was very short with us when she came to the table. Not a place we would ever visit again, nor would we recommend. Recently heard great things about Costa's but when my friend and I ate lunch here it was not an impressive experience. I ordered a taco salad and it was very bland, lack of spices/flavor, salsa was less than mediocre. My friend got a hamburger which was decent and the fries were magnificent! Crunchy, fresh fries with hints of garlic. The service was slow, it took about half an hour to get our food. The prices were not reasonable for the quality of food. read more

On my recent visit to Seattle, I found this place to have really gone downhill in cleanliness and decor, yet way up in price. I was really disappointed, and went in to dine with hesitation, largely for sake of nostalgia. It was a mild disappointment, and an expensive one at that. *NOT BOTTOMLESS MIMOSAS* I want to support this restaurant because the people here aren't mean. But, I went in and ordered bottomless mimosas and they only refilled a few times before they said they couldn't anymore. They said it was bc I hadn't ordered any food and didn't want to lose/get their license taken away. However, it seemed like the first mimosa was the only one that actually contained the most champagne, and by my last glass it was basically only orange juice. We also wanted to use a student coupon but they wouldn't honor it. I understand that establishments want to make a profit but I don't think it's fair to offer coupons or deals that are conditional. Again, these people aren't mean spirited, and their food isn't bad, but service is verrry slow and deals aren't honored. read more

At Christmas 2007 my Mother and Father-In Law came to Seattle from Idaho to share our holiday. Since their hotel was in the University District we decided that Costa's would be a good place for the family dinner, with our visiting daughter from New York, our eldest daughter and our future son-in-law. It was a happy occasion. I have taken friends from the UK to Costas because there is a family friendly selection of food, from American to Greek. The food is always great and plentiful, and reasonably priced. In fact the portions could be made smaller, but that should not be a complaint. We also have vegetarians in our family, and they are pleased at the selections available. My personal favorite is the Gyros salad - and was a bit disappointed this last time that the gyros had been cut into small pieces. At least it is back on the menu, as for a while it was not there. Our wait staff was charming. The most important element is that my Mother In Law just loved the place and they returned there for breakfast the next day. Oh... Their breakfast menu is great! We had a variety of items from the menu ... the chicken fried steak, gyro omelette, spanokapita, and an appetizer sampler ... and were pleased with everything! Especially the service! I came in with my friend and stood waiting to be noticed by a worker for ten minutes on a saturday morning while a line behind me built up. Finally a worker approached us and sat us. I could see the food coming out of the kitchen and with every dish every worker slowly talked about where it should go during a rush! But the food came out fairly fast. The dishes were americanized (lots of burgers) and overpriced. The beef souvalaki platter was okay. The salad was good and all of the components were but the meet did not have that crispy grill taste it should have like it does at the neighboring greek join the Continental (which is the besttt). You can always rely on this U-District fixture for delicious Greek food in an elegant atmosphere. Their hummus and village salad are delish, and they have perfected lentil soup. The greek dinner plates are fantastic, but I always end up too-full on appetizers to eat the huge portions- there are always leftovers! Their breakfasts are spot-on making this the perfect place to trundle into on Sunday morning. Bring friends and sit at one of their big tables in the way back. It's funny to read others' reviews complaining about slow service. This is a greek restaurant run by greek people serving greek food. It's served at a greek pace and rightfully so! Well goddamn! I have been to this restaurant many many times. Very friendly people and they even let you choose where to sit! Being in a college area, there are many college age kids working but they are all very professional and courteous. They recently hired a new busboy who is one of the best that I've seen in the business. On the subject of food, it is wonderful. I have tried nearly every item on the menu and have enjoyed all of them. I highly recommend the Farmer's Skillet. They also keep your water glass filled without being annoying. Service has been very fast every time. They even gave us a 15% discount because they recognized that we have been there a lot before. Overall great breakfast food, really good sandwiches, and wonderful service. I would definitely recommend this place for all types of people. read more

First of all, I'm so sad it took me until my senior year at UW to try this place. Now that I have, it's one of my favorite places (especially for breakfast!) Food: Amazing. My favorites are the waffles, biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, eggs, sausage, and fresh fruit bowls. I always have it with coffee and it's always delicious. Service: All the servers I've had have been so sweet and attentive. My coffee cup was never empty and they have an all around great attitude. The only problem is sometimes there's a line to pay at the register and that area can get really crowded. Atmosphere: Really nice. It's probably the only restaurant on the Ave that feels like an actual restaurant, which I appreciate. There's some artificial plants that give it a nice feel. There's some people that study there so I assume it's usually fairly quiet. read more

I love the food here! Even my picky Greek grandparents have eaten here. I like the spanikopita, Greek spaghetti, and even the gnocchi. My favorite dish is the saganaki, or flaming cheese. They take a piece of cheese, soak it in alcohol, and then set it on fire at your table. They then put out the flames with lemon juice. The result is goey, flavorful, crispy cheese you can pile on a pita and enjoy. The one issue with this place is that the service is slow even when the restaurant is almost empty. read more

TLDR: food was fantastic, service was disappointing. We arrived to the restaurant around 1, the restaurant had a 8 top party and then a couple extra tables, so not very busy. My friend and I waited an hour to get our food delivered to us, and were only told at the 45 minute mark that it was going to be arriving soon after we had to flag down another server to ask what the status was (she said the broccoli took a long time to steam?). Coffee wasn't refilled, we weren't checked on at all, but we waited patiently. Honestly we weren't even sure if Stacy had put our order in. When the food arrived, it was delicious! 5 stars. We politely requested from Stacy that we could have a beer comped from the meal because of the long wait time and she said that wouldn't be possible. She said she could take care of the $3 coffee, we asked if there was anything else she could do, she was very short with us and said she would take off 10%. We said ok, but when the bill arrived, the total went from $33 to $29. When we finished eating, we waited 10 minutes for boxes and I had to eventually go up to the front to ask for some. When we checked out, we asked whether the 10% had been forgotten, and she seemed very irritated to explain her math, which still doesn't check out. Unfortunately, our server was extremely short and unaccommodating. I work as a bartender and if my customer has the same experience I would've been apologetic, accommodating, and would've taken care of one of the dishes. We were extremely polite to Stacy and just received short answers and excuses and irritation in return. My girlfriend and I went in for weekday breakfast. There was nobody in the restaurant, yet our breakfast took nearly an hour to come out. Waitress was lazy and inattentive. You seat yourself in this restaurant, but we were not given our menus, and I waited ten minutes before I had to get up and get her attention before we were given menus. She was on her (personal!) phone the entire time we were ordering. Coffee was terrible. When the food came out after an hour, the toast was burnt, hash browns were bland, and eggs were spongy. Each dish was brought out separately and we had to wait a while for all the dishes to come out (we were three people). The lasagna looked delicious but was cold in the center, we sent it back and just shared the remaining plates because we were very late at this point. Asked for the check, didn't come. We got up to pay and ended up getting charged for the lasagna. We mentioned that and were told that they could give us dessert as a refund. We insisted on an actual refund, got that and left. I haven't tried the breakfast, and maybe that's the problem... But it seems to me the problem with Costa's is primarily the location. It's within a few blocks of great gyros at Aladdin's, even better falafel and baklavah at Cedar's, and amazing pasta at Mama Melina's. Anything else from soup and salad to burgers can be found within walking distance, and from what I've seen it's well worth the walk. The flaming cheese was decent, just like everything else I've had there. On the Ave you might as well walk a few blocks and get really good food (often a lot cheaper). And there aren't that many vegetarian options beyond salads and even less for the vegans. read more

Just had an amazing omelette here -- the "Greek Village" with olives, tomatoes, green onions and feta. Delicious! It came with fresh fruit and rye toast and it was a GREAT breakfast. I would give it zero stars if possible. We went to the restaurant on the Fourth of July for breakfast. We were seated and brought coffee and water. We sat for nearly an hour and never again saw one wait staff. My coffee or my wife's water was never refilled. After an hour of waiting for food it seemed to me that they prioritized to-go order over there current customers. Stay far, far, far away from this place. Was visiting Seattle and went with 2 friends for a Sat night meal. The place was empty - yep, that should have been a big red flag in my face. This place has the WORST service. Our waiter came twice - to take the order and deliver the food. That's IT. He NEVER returned. We could see the waiter clowning around with the cook in the kitchen. We had to ask another waitress floating around for our bill, and she acted like we were bothering her. I ordered the salmon and it was tasteless. The food was barely edible and WAYYYY overpriced. This is a great restaurant if you are looking for a hint of Greece. They have a large selection of American food w/ hints of Greece in them. They also have some classic Greek dishes too. The inside is very nice and cosy and the service is great. The dolmades are great and the french fries are amazing. The Saganaki (flaming cheese) is also one of the best that I have had outside of Greece. I eat here when I am in the UW area. I really like this place. The tuna melt is also very good. I've eaten here before and even though the food wasn't super awesome, it was always pretty ok. Knowing this I didn't expect my french toast to be the best I've ever had. I just knew that they served breakfast all day, which was why I decided to go there. However, when you call your french toast "Cinnamon Swirl French Toast", you'd think you'd be able to taste the cinnamon. Not so with these. Maybe it was because I ordered it in the middle of the day, or because they were short on cinnamon.. i don't know. But it basically tasted like egg... and a lot of syrup didn't help. Came here on a Wednesday morning around 10 for breakfast. It was pretty empty but with only 2 tables taken by a group, and one occupied with just one person. It was my first time to Costa's without reading any reviews, so I was looking forward to ordering. I got the hazelnut French toast with scrambled eggs and sausage links, and it was really good! Also ordered bottomless mimosas. When the check came, our waitress noted that the the 10% service charge was already added to the bill, so it was a little more than we expected; but nonetheless, not bad for a first time visit.
