What a great day!! The last review was over a year ago? Well let me fix that now. We took Jerry's Jet Boat tour up to Agness and had an amazing lunch. I had the BBQ plate and my husband the vegetarian wrap. Everything was fresh and tasty. The BBQ had ribs, pulled pork, tri tip, beans, cole slaw, corn bread, watermelon. The meat was tender, smokey and delish. We also ordered a rum cocktail, can't remember the name but loved it! And we also got the famous berry cobbler with tillamook vanilla ice cream. The view of the river was very pleasant and the deck had lots of open seating. The service was spot on, friendly and attentive. There is a shuttle bus if you choose to not walk up the steep hill. We were there for a family reunion. Food is great bbq lots of good choices. We rented a river front cabin. The view of the river is great. Bed was old and rolled to the middle. We saw complaints of no cell service or internet, so I called them before we arrived they assured me there is internet and you can do wifi calling and only cell service is Att. Which was wrong as our family members with Att couldn't get through. And no one was able to connect to the internet. So if you want a total off the grid experience then you will love it. read more

Respectable BBQ served on the large open deck (with views through the trees of the Rogue River) was the highlight of our lunch at Cougar Lane Store & Lodge. We took a whitewater jet boat tour (Jerry's) from Gold Beach which included a pitstop and meal here. For a restaurant only open May thru October each year (although the lodge/store is open year round), I was impressed at how big, clean, organized, and, most importantly, tasty lunch was. I've had some pretty bad meals on tours before, but this wasn't one of those at all. For me, it says a lot that I'd probably come here just to eat even if I wasn't on a boat tour. The Rogue River Pit Meal included 2 Baby Back Ribs, 2 small pieces of Pulled Pork, and 2 slices of Smoked Brisket plus a sweet Corn Bread Muffin, tiny triangle of Watermelon, simple Coleslaw, and thick Baked Beans. The ribs, brisket, and muffin were my favorites. I'd love to get a plate of only those, but glad I got to try all the items. For $8 extra, I added a dessert of Homemade Berry Cobbler with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream that wasn't amazing, but hit the spot on a sunny summer day. One major positive for Cougar Lane is that they also have a bar selling drinks like Cougar Punch (with Myers Dark Rum), The Agnes Buck (with Tito's Vodka), Larry's Hard Lemonade (with Tito's), and a Bacon Bloody Mary (with BACON!). My recommendation is beer drinkers try pints or pitchers of local craft brews from Arch Rock Brewing (Gold Beach, OR). Our time was short, so we tipped our server and headed back to the dock refreshed and re-energized for part 2 of the tour. OMG! I thought I'd had my "best" burger long ago, but today, the burger I had has topped my list! Here at the "Cougar Lane Lodge" restaurant (ok, I do hate their name) I ordered their famous "smokehouse" burger. It was well worth the 2 hour drive (and $18) to check it out and do my review. It starts with a big slab of 24hr smoked brisket from their char-pit, then they add strips of crisp maple bacon, a pile of fork-tender pulled pork on top of a well-seasoned, ground chuck beef patty. Cover that in melted Tillamook cheddar cheese, along with all the regular garnishments, stuff it inside a fresh baked brioche bun and you have the best burger on the planet! Even though my mouth is on the larger size, I still had to give it a slight squeeze and a steady push into my face to get a good chomp on it. Juicy, tangy and rich, a wonderful flavor explosion in my mouth. Their BBQ sauces (mild and spicy) were a great addition if you like it drooling down your wrist to leave a tattoo of smoke for your ride home. I was all in on this beast and I suggest you check out the picture I put up for accuracy. It's a great location too, overlooking the Rogue River and surrounding mountains. I really like wilderness lodges and have visited some beauties on lakes and rivers in my day. This one is rather mediocre by comparison. It was our choice for the lunch stop during our jet boat trip on the Rogue River. After looking at the three menus for restaurants in Agness (pop. 135) at Jerry's Jet Boats, Cougar Lane seemed the most kid friendly and casual, and it was. There is a large outdoor deck with wooden picnic tables and some indoor seating if the weather turns foul. It is up on a hill away from the river, so you get a nice view of the Rogue at a distance. During lunch, the menu focuses on burgers and sandwiches. The service and food were fine, but you'll be paying a bit more for pretty basic food. One little tip I'll pass along is that if you walk around the building, there is a general store. So rather than pay $4 for a scoop of ice cream at the restaurant, you can have your choice of ice cream bars for under $2 at the store. Actually everything at the store was reasonably priced. Another family packed a picnic and sat on the picnic tables below the deck. Next time I'd probably do that and supplement the picnic with drinks and dessert from the store. There are berry bushes for picking and a bare rock beach for skipping rocks. Heck, when you're in the wilderness, you've got to make the most of your surroundings. read more

We had lunch at Cougar as part of a Jet Boat trip. The food and service were top notch, organized, and brought right to our table on the patio. If you are coming on the on Jet Boat, be prepared for good food and service. I had the BBQ plate that included ribs, pulled pork, and brisket, along with slaw, beans, corn bread, and watermelon. The meat was lightly smoked and served with sauces on the side which is a nice way to go. The sauces included spicy and sweet, both were good with my preference being the spicy, though I ate about half the meat sans the sauce. I heard of their BBQ at the lodge when I lived briefly in Gold Beach earlier this year. I drove to Agness from Gold Beach in late March not knowing that the lodge restaurant is only open seasonally starting May 1. This past weekend I had the opportunity to eat here after the Rogue River Triathalon where I was merely an observer. It was a packed house for lunch with all the triathalon people AND a group from one of the river tours. We stood in line and were a little confused after a staff person handed us menus, said we could take a seat to look over the and they'd be over to get our drink order. Turns out that we got out of line, waited a while and ended up needing to get back in line to order our food that we waited over an hour to receive. The brisket sandwich was ok, but could've used more BBQ sauce on the side and I wasn't a huge fan of the pineapple flavored baked beans. Our table also ordered the kids chicken tenders and fries (good size tenders and tasty fries) and the pork and blue tacos (very flavorful, too much slaw in the taco so ask for it on the side if it's not your thing). Overall, the food was decent, service was slow (understandably so for how busy it was), the staff were pleasant and it's pretty much the only place to get food around there. As far as Covid safety goes - I think the staff did a good job of separating the indoor seating and I even heard the staff telling people to put on their masks to enter. This place deserves no stars. This place took a super long time. We chose Cougar Lane Lodge for our Jerry's 80 mile boat ride, we get an hour and a half to eat. She took our order and gave us our drinks we waited and waited. We never saw our waitress again until we spoke up 45 minutes later. We told her that we have 3 very hungry kids. All she said was sorry. Once an hour and 15 mins had passed, we told her to cancel our order because we had to get to our boat. We had to leave with no lunch. We asked our waitress if our food was almost done. And NOPE!!!! It was not even started. So we left with hungry stomachs, but we got some chips from the store near by. We were so disappointed we thought we were going to have a nice peaceful lunch but NOPE!!! Our captain was great and we loved the boat ride but I recommend you pack your own lunch. The BBQ was delicious, but the server we had was one of the worst I had ever experienced. We were the second couple seat and the last to have our order taken. Our server (Tanner) ignored us on purpose and we had to ask where our food was. Delivered our food and placed it at the opposite side of the table from where we were sitting. (my Sweetheart's 2nd time - my first) Had a BLAST! Stopped here for lunch. (again 2nd time for her - my first) We both got burgers = REALLY good! We finished it off with the Berry Cobbler! THAT was very good. We are somewhat local - but moved from So Cal a few years ago. We have had "destination fare" and usually it's mediocre = at best. Not this place! We are planning to return (often) and even ride the Harley there = just for the food and the atmosphere ! I see there have been some tough reviews by others for service issues. Ours was good. Driving through the Kalimopsis Wilderness of Oregon on our way to Portland, Stuart was thrown into a tizzy based on the name of this Lodge alone...for some reason, he was hell-bent on staying here, imagining wild bands of 'women of a certain age' prowling through the lobby...or some other such nonsense. ANYWAY...this is a very cool place to stay, despite the fact there were none of the aforementioned 'cougars' to be found. This spot has little cabins with kitchenettes (or not) and back porches facing the Rogue River . There is a general store selling bait, tackle, liquor, snacks, etc. There also is a restaurant with a huge deck over looking the Rogue with spectacular views. The room is filled with photos, memorabilia, & taxidermied creatures...(you know the sort, pictures of babies positioned along the length of a salmon for size comparisons...) and a basic menu with amazingly good BLTs & French fries. We got there too late for many of the items offered on the menu, but the grill was still open & we didn't suffer. The room was swell...2 Queen size beds & 2 twins, a perfectly fine bathroom, & the deck was great. During the summer season there are jet boat rides up & down the river, & this is the place people stop for lunch & dinner. I'd happily stay there again...it's peaceful, there ARE lots of animals around, too, including a flock of wild turkeys (that would be the bird, not the bourbon) along with the hoped-for sightings of 'cougars'... read more

We stopped at this restaurant as part of our Jerry's jet ride tour for lunch and it was a lot tastier than I expected for being one of our only two options on the trip. As a family of four we shared the sampler platter with baked beans and potato salad. The brisket was amazing and my favorite part of the meal! Baked beans were full of bacon and potato salad was homemade. We finished our meal with some delicious berry cobbler topped with vanilla bean ice cream, which was devoured in a matter of minutes. Wait staff was young and very friendly and provide good, active service throughout our meal. On a jet boat ride with 40 others, we were the only ones who picked Cougar Lane. We should have known better. This dumpy, dusty, "rustic" "lodge" was deserted. The salad bar wasn't available. There was a fat lady sleeping at the cash register (no joke!!! Butt on a stool, head on the counter.) The "waiter" asked us what we wanted, and we inquired about the "famous" cobbler that our boat captain boasted about. He said, in a very yokel voice, that we could have it but needed to eat lunch first! oh, hahaha--doofus, just give us cobbler. A while later and $10 poorer, we were served pathetic portions of cobbler--minus the cobb that's supposed to accompany the ler. We were forced to stop here when our 104 mile jet boat said this was our lunch stop. We got about 1 hour 25 mins before we had to be back to the boat. My husband & I trekked up the big hill fast & were the first ones seated. Seemed like everything was going to be fine until our waitress didn't want to take our order. She seemed like we were an inconvenience because we wanted to order when we were literally the first 2 people from the boat at the restaurant. My husband flagged her down after he noticed she was taking everyone else's order without ever coming back to us. I took a picture of my husband & you can see empty tables around us. All the people that came after us, in larger groups, got served before us. The table that was empty behind us filled up with 4 people who all got their food before us even though they ordered wayyyy after us. They even got their dessert before we ever saw our basic cheeseburgers! We waited from 1:25-2:20pm to even get the food, which was 2 cheeseburgers and 1 Diet Coke. When it came she said "bet you thought we forgot about you huh", so she was well aware we were there first & served almost last. A lot of people on our boat were older so maybe she felt we needed to wait, it was a really weird vibe though. She would ask people around us how their food was & wouldn't even look at us. Then when the food finally showed up, they were artificially pre-formed frozen Costco hamburger patties with the scalloped edge. I ordered a burger thinking I would get some local beef but definitely not the case. A family on our boat was there for their 4th time & they brought an ice chest of lunch stuff because they knew what to expect. It was $28(before the tip) for 2 frozen patty cheeseburgers & a soda. Save your money, bring some food you know you'll like, and save yourself the interaction with the rude waitress. Disappointing lunch stop to say the least. read more
