ZERO STARS! Today I went to Country Boy to pick up a loaf of white bread for my father- in -law. Here's why it'll be the last time I shop there. As I was waiting for assistance I observed the girl behind the counter speak to an elderly customer with a very rude and nasty tone. Then it was my turn and received the same rotten annoyed attitude. She acted as though she was doing me a favor when I ordered the loaf of bread and a buttered roll. As I was waiting, I then noticed the place was absolutely filthy. The thick buildup of various unidentifiable crud wedged deeply between the display shelves and glass was undoubtedly the result of many many months of choosing not to cleaning. For an added effect there's a filthy (previously white?) stained ridden curtain that hangs between the baking area and the service area. It kind of makes you wonder what's going on back there. Do they actually bake there? As I was leaving, I could hear the crunch of dirt and debris on the filthy floor with each footstep. I thought to myself- it's no wonder why they keep this place so dimly lit. By the way- The stale and crumbling buttered (butter-less) roll never had a chance.. I placed it in a very conveniently located trash bin just a few steps outside the door of the bakery. A pandemic is not an excuse for a filthy store, rude employees or bad product. Get it together Country Boy owners. Maybe consider closing the store for a few days- retrain your bakers, counter help and most importantly give the shop a deep cleaning. I must say .. this was not my first bad experience... this was my "worst bad experience". You should be ashamed. read more

I was really disappointed with everything we got. The cake we bought was rainbow on the outside and the inside was dry and tasted like nothing special. The icing tasted like pure dye so we ended us throwing the cake out. The cookies were okay. read more

What a shame! The cakes are usually delicious. The cookies are OK - great if you get them the same day they were baked. The bread is ALWAYS stale, especially the "Italian" bread - you can hit a ball out of Citi Field with that thing! The worst though is the staff. They are so slow & disinterested. I used to LOVE this place. Yesterday my mom and I went in. The cashier couldn't have been ruder. She clearly was miserable to be there. She took my order while the other cashier ignored my mother and helped someone else. The onion (pocket) rolls were double what they cost elsewhere ($1 each) and were stale. My new Go-To Bakery! There was a misunderstanding with the pricing of my order and the baker was so accommodating and understanding. He helped me more that I would have expected on the cost. There are three reasons to go here: 1) Rainbow Cookies - delectable little cake-like cubes that are absolutely amazing here! But get them early on holidays - they do sell out! 2) Italian Butter Cookies - so buttery and so good. 3) Birthday cakes - If you like the basic yellow cake with chocolate fudge frosting then you will love it here. The baked goods are fine, but the people behind the counter are atrocious and the place is UNCLEAN. While I was there, the following things happened: 1. The woman behind the counter tried to sell me milk with a sell-by date of 7 days earlier, and when I confronted her about it, her previously excellent command of English suddenly departed. When she first pulled the milk from the fridge, I observed her closely reading and contemplating the portion of the bottle with the sell-by date for a good 15 seconds and then could see her decide "what the heck, I will still sell this bottle to this customer." Then, upon my demand, when she pulled a replacement bottle of milk from the fridge, her English abilities finally rediscovered, she snarkily said "August 28, is that good for you?" To which I responded in kind "yes, because that day hasn't happened yet." 2. The same person then pretended that my credit card didn't work but I could tell from the piece of paper she gave me (having used credit card readers myself) that she didn't run it in the first place. read more

Rude service, by the counter person, Esmeralda. I asked that a cake I ordered, specially, be packed for a car ride. When they brought it out, they placed the cake in a cake box. No String. I told Esmeralda, "I called and asked them to pack it properly for a car ride, can you place it in a box?" No, said Esmeralda, we can't. "We got no boxes." I said, "In a bakery this size, you have no boxes?" Which of course she determined, without looking. Esmeralda, has a very poor attitude, for someone working in the service industry. There doesn't seem to be many bakeries on Long Beach, but that doesn't matter as long as Country Boy Bakery is around. This low-key bakery is holding it down for all the sweet tooth-ed locals in the area. We dropped in one evening to pick something up for a house party nearby, and discovered this lovely bakery had a plethora of assorted baked goods, all fresh and probably make on the premise. We ended up getting a chocolate fudge mousse cake that wowed everyone's socks off. The cake itself was about 8" round, and cost between $15-$20 (I forgot the actual amount). It was such a dense and decadent dessert, that six grown adults who love chocolate, could not even finish the entirety of the mousse cake. I spied a huge apple strudel that could also have been a contender for the house party (this thing was gigantic)! Overall, we were highly impressed by the fresh flavor of the cake, and the wide assortment of what the bakery has to offer. The turning point was about a year ago when my husband started to eat an apple turnover and it was moldy inside!!! I called on a Saturday to buy a relatively large custom birthday cake for my birthday. I needed it to feed 30 kindergarteners plus some teachers. They were very accommodating to my short deadline and the cake looked amazing when I picked it up on Monday. After eating the cake with my students today I knew I had to give them a 5-star rating. I got a parve chocolate cake for my birthday in December. It was really good. However, today I called for cake for my friend's 30th birthday. I wanted them to put a picture on there. They said to call back and speak to the manager. When I called back an hour later, the same woman right away put me on hold and then hung up on me. That's not right at all. Very good cake. For my grandmother's 80th birthday, I ordered (and paid for) 4 loaves of rye bread to be picked up the following day. I ordered ahead of time because my grandma's birthday happens to fall on St. Patrick's Day. I figured my order would be marked and put aside. No such luck. When I called to let the store know I was on my way they informed me they had sold my bread to another customer and the bakery they order from would not be making any more deliveries. The bread isn't even made on-site. They didn't seem to care or offer any semblance of an apology. I ended up getting a full refund. The rye bread at Waldbaum's ended up being a pretty good substitute. Never bringing my business here again. read more

Customer service is sad -- both in the store and via phone. The coffee cakes are decent, but not special enough to make me return. The staff behind the counter do not seem invested in the business or in trying to help customers. I've been rushed on every visit. When they didn't have what I wanted, I asked questions to find a substitute. The staff member was not remotely interested in helping me find something else. I expect more from a local bakery -- at least a pleasant interaction and baked goods that taste better than what I make at home. read more

My father was unsure of what to get so he asks the employee "which one is good?" She replied "all of them." He brings home a chocolate cake which looked great but the inside was DRY. Worst all, half of the cake was made out if buttercream. Do they really expect people to blindly eat the stuff? I kindly told him the next day to never go back there.
