So excited for this place! As a half Cuban from Florida I have expectations that don't align with some of the choice that are here in the Asheville area. Growing up I alway went to cafe style Cuban restaurants. This little shop reminds me of those places. I tried the ham croquettes and the guava pastry. The croquettes were nice and crispy on the outside and perfect salty ham center. But the guava party is what really won me over. It was the best guava pastry I've had in years. That is including down in Florida the Cuban food Mecca. I would have gotten more but I did want o be that costume that buys out all there inventory first thing Saturday morning. Love love love. The people here are SO friendly and the food is delicious. A few of my faves are the mojo pork bowl which is a generous portion and the best most tender well flavored meat. The sauce that comes on it is so good and really sets it off. The whole bowl is so filling and can fill your belly even split into two servings. The mimosas are also worth a trip because they supply you with fresh juice for the flavored ones..I really enjoyed the guava mimosa the first warm day of spring! As a native South Floridian and a vegan I was so fortunate to learn about this amazing cafe. In my pre- vegan days I always had the delicious Cuban sandwich and found the vegan version here totally satisfied my yearnings and was soooo delicious (in fact, I recently went back again to treat myself!). I found the same with the vegan version of picadillo. Yuca fries great too! My non-vegan friends loved their cuban sandwiches and other dishes as well. We all had bowls --vegan and non-- everything was so great from sandwiches, bowls to empanadas. Even the beans and rice were made the way I always recalled them when I lived in Miami. You can eat inside the cafe or in their outdoor patio adjacent to their awesome Dragonfly gift shop where I bought a painting by a local artist. Cousins Cuban Cafe is a woman-owned business with great food, warm environment and great service. Came across this gem yesterday and decided to try it out today for lunch. Hands down the best Cuban food I have had north of Miami. Seriously. We had a smattering of their pastries-empanadas (chicken and beef), croquettes (chicken and ham), a cheese & guava taqueria, and the absolute best potato & beef balls on earth. We had a takeout, when we were ready to pay, the cashier clicked something on screen before he turned pad over for us to pay, not eve said a word about it. Update. I have gone back several times. I love the breakfast sandwich, I get the one with avocado and it is my favorite. I have tried several pastries and cookies and they are all delicious. And I had the iced Cuban latte, can't remember it's name, which was amazing. If I could get myself out of bed earlier then I would make it a regular stop, but I am not a morning person. So it is a great way to start the day when I have to get out of bed early against my will. Haha read more

My family dined here twice while visiting Black Mountain for the week. They have a cute patio in the back of the shop next door where we enjoyed lunch one day and brunch another day. The food is delicious and flavorful. Best yuca fries I've had (ask for a side of their special seasoning blend). Susie who took our order was so nice and helpful, and the owner also welcomed us and made sure we were happy with our order. This restaurant is fairly new but thriving because of their flavorful food and friendly service. Support this small business! The next time we're in Black Mountain we'll be sure to stop in. So, never been to Cuba...but I did grow up with South Florida Cuban food. My standards when it comes to Cuban food come from that experience. Wherever we go in the country, any time I can find a Cuban restaurant, I always try it, regardless of location. Bridgeport CT? Des Moines IA? Yup, try'n em all! That being said, coming to the Asheville area, I was excited to find out there were a couple different options. Headed to Cousins as soon as I could, and was not disappointed! Their Cuban sandwich is fantastic, and the closest to FL I have come across so far. The tostones couldn't be more perfect. Just mashed, fried then seasoned with salt and pepper. The garlic comes on the side, so you can flavor them how much you want. Just a wonderful meal all the way around. If you are a fan of Cuban food, you need to get to Cousins ASAP! Main word to describe Cousins Cuban cuisine is authentic! I am Cuban and found the food to be the real thing! We had the salad bowl with romaine lettuce topped with garlic-lime chicken (can't say enough about how flavorful this is!), green plantain croutons, avocado mash and garlic-cilantro aioli. It was fantastic as were the ham croquettes. Even the mimosa was Cubanesque... prosecco with guava nectar! When in this cute little town, don't miss this gem, and don't forget to get your caffeine fix with a shot of Cuban cafecito or cortadito (mixed with a shot of milk), you will be back for more, as will my husband and myself! read more

Since Cousins Cuban cafe opened on October 19th I have been nearly six times already. The reason I keep going is because it is real authentic Cuban food and there is no place around the area that serves real authentic Cuban food like they do. Four meals and all were forgettable. This might be the only option for Cuban food in the area, but it wasn't good enough for me to return.

This is a wonderful, charming little café with absolutely delicious Cuban pastries, coffee drinks, and various breakfast and sandwich options. I arrived at about 10 AM on a Saturday morning and had no problem getting a small table for one. This place is busy, but a lot of people do takeout and the tables seem to turn fairly quickly. I ordered the guava and cream cheese pastry to start. It was delicious dipped in the Cuban café con Leche that I ordered. It's worth noting that the Cuban tradition is to add a fair amount of sugar to their coffee in advance of serving it... The next time I might request a half dose of sugar... Still delicious! I also ordered a breakfast entrée simply called the "breakfast bowl", which included two beautifully fried high-quality eggs over perfectly cooked plantains with savory mojo pork (pulled pork) and accompanied by Cuban toast. If you're looking for a filling delicious breakfast, you can't go wrong with this one. However, the menu includes several other attractive breakfast entrée items (including the Miami Brunch Bowl) that I'm looking forward to coming back again to try.
