Good Knows Beans & THB Pilsner
Claudia Z.

We were on our way back from Narragansett & hubby wanted to stop at Tower Hill Brewing. We were first introduced through the RI Food Fights #BigLeBREWski earlier this spring. The taproom is cozy yet spacious featuring TVs, giant Jenga, cornhole, table seating as well as sofas. THB is known for their IPAs & sours - neither of which are our favorite beer varietals. On this occasion, we enjoyed their pilsner & porter. Another time, we tried the coconut & pineapple hard seltzer (passionfruit hard seltzer was also delicious) & Kölsch Hearted. One of the beers that we were surprised about was the Dunkel George Lager, a dark German-style lager. It looked really dark but was imminently drinkable! We loved sitting at the bar & talking with the beer gal in between customers. She was very knowledgeable & engaging! You can order delivery from a variety of South County Commons restaurants or bring food from your favorite restaurant (shout out to Jayd Bun!).

I had a fantastic first visit to Tower Hill Brewing! I was in the area picking up Jayd Bun for lunch, and since it's a takeout-only spot pretty far from home, I needed to decide which local brewery or distillery to check out nearby. They all encourage you to bring or order food, so it was a bit of a tough choice, but Tower Hill Brewing, located at South County Commons, had plenty of parking and lots of seating, making it a great pick. If I hadn't already grabbed food, I could've ordered from local spots like Applebee's, a Thai restaurant, or others that deliver right to the brewery. They have a great selection of beers--everything from English Pale Ales to IPAs, Stouts, Dunkels, and even Sours. You can either get a flight or a full pour. Prices vary by beer: 5 oz pours were around $3-$4, 12 oz pours were $7-$8, and 16 oz pours went for $8-$9. Menus were available on most of the tables, and there were clear signs near the bar for ordering. I went with the "Good Knows Beans," a 5% ABV coffee stout, and it was absolutely delicious! The ambiance was perfect--big windows on two walls let in lots of natural light, and there's plenty of seating, from high tops to traditional tables and even a cozy corner with upholstered chairs. String lights added a nice touch, and there were games like giant Jenga to keep things fun. Flat screen TVs lined one wall with all the sports games streaming. The vibe was super welcoming, with people chatting at the bar, a group celebrating a birthday, and families and friends hanging out. It's definitely a place where there's a little something for everyone.

This is the perfect spot to come and grab a quick drink before heading next door to the cinema or one of the many amazing small restaurants in the South County Commons area. I love how friendly and warm the atmosphere was. You simply belly up to the bar (plenty of seats in the roomy interior), and take your pick from one of the several delicious craft creations on tap. While they do not have a food menu, they welcome guests to bring takeout from the aforementioned nearby establishments, and we saw plenty of pizza boxes and Thai trays at neighboring tables. While we didn't have enough time to take advantage of this great added benefit, we certainly will next time! This seems to also be an excellent spot to take in a game on one of the many large LCD TVs, play cornhole or board games, or simply just kick back and relax with friends over a few curated beverages. This is just the casual and laid back spot you'll want to check out this winter. We will definitely be back!

A great addition to South County Commons is a craft brewery with tasting room. Situated across from the movie theater and several hotels, this is a great adult option for rainy days or unwinding instead of staying at your hotel room. The beer was decent, and in the context of a new establishment, actually pretty good. I had the peach sour (Edith) and found it a solid sour beer. Bring your own food and entertainment provided (think board games and large Jenga) inside is new if non descript with several bar seats and televisions for sport games.

Chinese food and beer, what more could you want?

We just went for the first time, they opened in March. Their location is great, nestled in South County Commons. This place is a perfect hangout with friends. They have several large TVs, cornhole, and various other board games. They also have a lounge area with a sofa and armchairs. There's a mixture of high top and low top tables. They don't serve food, will bring food to you, so that's very convenient. They had a large variety of beers on tap. I love the fact that they are all made in house. We really enjoyed our experience, and the bartender was super knowledgeable and friendly.

First visits always call for a flight!

My first visit to Rhode Island's newest brewery, so naturally I started with a flight. The red ipa caught me by surprise in the best way. I enjoyed it immensely. Other beers were good overall. Lots of tables both low and high, though if you're going low just know sharing is caring as the low tops accommodate multiple groups per table. Service was friendly and efficient, and the menu was easy to read. Something to note regarding the space itself is that it is quite cavernous and open, and as a result it is extremely loud! Like VERY loud. No food on site but they encourage BYOF and there are plenty of options in the center.

Nice new establishment. However it's a bit loud. Hard to have a conversation. Maybe some noise panels on the ceiling

Cute place. Low key, laid back vibe. Super friendly and helpful staff…read more The entrance looks like you are turning into a stone yard. The GPS is right. The building you want is to the right. Look for a small peaked roof entrance. If you enter this way, you will walk down a long hallway to the brewery entrance. Public restrooms are off this hallway. They are very clean. There are two rooms inside. A bar is located in the first room. Both rooms have a TV and seating. If you choose to drive around the end of the building, park by the beer garden entrance. There are porta johns located here (no smell, but I didn't check them out) for guest use if you choose not to go inside. A band sets up at this end of the garden, the bar is at the opposite end. Follow the business SM page for info on bands and food truck info. The beer garden is covered by sun sails, has some Adirondack seats, fire pits, heaters, picnic tables and a TV. Plus a small flower garden area running along the fence. Train tracks run just beyond the fence. At the time of our visit there were about nine beers on tap, plus a couple of canned/bottled libations. Prices are a bit higher than your local watering hole, but this is local craft brew and the beers are well crafted. They offer a few snacks, and the occassional on-site food truck, but no food service. This is a nice, chill spot to meet up. Call for info on watching your team.

Grey Sail Brewing is a craft brewery that opened in Westerly, Rhode Island in November 2011. It was…read morefounded by husband and wife Alan and Jennifer Brinton. A chemical engineer by day, Alan brewed at home at nights and on weekends. In 2009, Alan and his wife Jennifer started thinking seriously about opening a brewery. The couple located a circa 1920s building that had originally been the Westerly Macaroni Factory. They outfitted the building, hired a great staff, and were open by the end of 2011. The first beer they brewed was "Flagship Ale". Jennifer oversaw the brewery operation while Alan continued to work full-time as an engineer, all while they raised four children. The Brintons later purchased the historic Cataldo House next door. After a careful renovation, they opened this property as their taproom and outdoor beer garden in May 2016. The brewery also partnered with Vetrano's Restaurant to launch "Vetrano's Wood Fired": fresh wood-fired pizza prepared on-site at the beer garden. The original brewery building is now used exclusively for production, canning, and beer-to-go sales. In 2020, Grey Sail expanded by opening South County Distillers: a sister distillery located on the same property. I have been enjoying Grey Sail's beer since the earliest days of the brewery. I have also visited the brewery a number of times and enjoyed watching them expand over the years. I recently stopped there for lunch with my son while we happened to be passing through the area. After grabbing a table at the beer garden, I ordered a sampler flight at the taproom which consisted of "Hazy Day" (Belgian Wit), "Middle Child" (IPA), "Raspberry Reef" (Wheat Ale), and "Haze, Ho!" (New England IPA). The latter was my favorite. For food, my son and I ordered and shared a "Cheese Pizza" and a "Margherita" (fresh mozzarella, sauce, basil, parmesan cheese, EVOO) from Vetrano's. We really enjoyed the pizza! During our visit, my son and I also enjoyed a few games of corn hole. Between their eclectic beer selection, quality craft cocktails, delicious wood-fried pizza, and spacious taproom and beer garden, I highly recommend a visit to Grey Sail Brewing!
