Giving one star reviews is one of my least favorite things to do but this place absolutely deserves it. It's been a while since I've been to Cove and my last visit roughly 2 years ago was great, however, clearly much has changed since then. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated quickly. That was the last time we were serviced. We sat at our table for 11 mins before receiving water. After another 5 mins I went to the bar to place an order for drinks, since no one returned to our table to greet us or take orders. A server eventually brought over waters but didn't introduce himself as our waiter so we had no clue who was taking our table's orders. I pulled up on a calm Thursday evening and to my delight, it was Seafood Thursday.I appreciated the hostess informing us that all food is made to order so we managed our expectations accordingly. I ordered the garlic butter shrimp and crab and let me tell you, it was heavenly! The fritters could'an use little more codfish. I felt like I was eating very well seasoned dough. So I finally found a nice sit down West Indian restaurant in Queens ! If you are from Queens and remember landmarks , this spot is near where the Cross Island Diner used to be . It's on 243rd and Merrick Blvd . Q5 bus goes there as well . The name of the spot is The Cove . It's loud , with a DJ playing your favorite tunes and it was definitely a vibe ! Seating is for 90 minutes ( though we went over and they didn't kick us out ) . Service was great ( though difficult to hear and was screaming to waiters because the music was loud ) . The drinks were good ! I had a Cove Rum Punch . As an appetizer, We shared Codfish Fritters that were good though a bit doughy. We also had Escovitch shrimp that Was amazing . The oxtail Rasta pasta was excellent and the oxtails are on the bones . My bestie had oxtail with rice and peas ( they are made with coconut and coconut milk) We were celebrating a birthday and they sang happy birthday and brought out a slice of cheesecake . The spot has street parking and a cool bar . It's reasonably priced and the big portion mean food to take home . There are several spots to pose for pictures . Overall terrible experience. To start the restaurant itself was nice, ambiance was lovely. The bathroom was clean. However, the dining area not so much, there were straw wrappers from the previous night at our table. We went for Sunday afternoon brunch and the restaurant opened late even though we had a reservation for 1. After a delayed start it took over an hour for our food to arrive once ordered. The restaurant is cute. It is small but the decor is lovely so I was excited to try it out. My friend and I came here for weekend brunch. The drinks were served in a carafe and they were pretty good. I had the ackee and salt fish on fried green plantain appetizer and it was good. I ordered the shrimp and grits, which was also good. My friend had the chicken and waffles. She said it was okay but pretty basic, it didn't wow her. Now let's talk about the service. The service was terrible. It took an hour just to get a drink. My friend and I literally sat and talked with each other for an hour before we were served anything we ordered. That's insane to me, especially because our reservation was early (maybe 30 minutes after opening). The place wasn't crowded. We weren't even notified if something was going on to cause the delay of service. It was like our time wasn't valuable and the delay wasn't addressed. It was like we were just expected to wait. Cove restaurant was vibes from beginning to end. The music was good, the service was good and the food was great. I had a great experience here. I had a rum punch for my drink , this was strong and sweet. Then I had fritters for my appetizer. The fritters were delicious. For my entree I had grilled lobster and rice and beans. I've been coming here since it was called Island Taste, back when it was on the corner before Social Corner--over 10 years ago. The restaurant has gone through two makeovers since then. The ambiance is modern and inviting, perfect for taking pictures. The food and drinks have always been consistently great. I've tried almost everything on the menu: oxtails, curry goat, soup, Rasta pasta, Escovitch fish sticks, salt fish cakes--you name it. They never disappoint. The rum punch is also a must-try. That said, one thing they need to work on is hiring more staff or improving training. Unless I'm sitting at the bar, I always end up having to wave down a waiter or waitress for service, and honestly, it's been like this for years. Other than that, Cove is a great spot to visit. The music is more mellow now, which gives it more of a restaurant vibe compared to the party scene it used to have. Overall, it's a solid choice for dining and drinks. read more

As I'm writing I just realized I didn't take a pic. Folks they were plumped, sweet, not overly greasy and done just right. Side note: while having drinks and waiting in food I asked one of the staff when is the reggae music segment.. I mean you are in a Caribbean restaurant I need my tunes. Sure enough few minutes later the RnB was replaced with reggae not saying it's because of me but hey.. ask you shall received! We were offered the option of indoor or outdoor but it was wayy too hot for outdoor so we had to pass even though some of our party wanted to do hookah, which they only offer outdoor. Everyone pretty much ordered the rum punch while I ordered the tropical margarita. They all said the rum punch was good and strong and ordered seconds. The tropical margarita was okay, flavor was good but that's it. We ordered a variety of appetizers: mango habanero and jerk wings, codfish fritters, cove shrimp, mussels, and crab cake. The wings were very underwhelming! Like the inside of the wings had ZERO flavor, just the sauce coated on the outside. The mussels were SOO good, just wish it was more, the codfish fritters were good and big portion, and the crab cakes were good. For entrees: we had curry goat with white rice and steamed veggies, grilled lobster tails (MP $45) with a side of rasta pasta, curry goat and roti, steamed snapper, oxtail with rice and peas, curry shrimp, and oxtail with Rasta pasta. Island taste was cool before, but Cove is beautiful and sleek. Definitely picturesque! They no longer have the nightclub hrs I came on a Thursday night after work. I missed happy hour (Monday- Friday 4pm to 7pm). But, was informed that it was seafood night. They had specials on dishes containing crab leg clusters, lobster, mussels, etc. (every Thursday). Rum punch: perfect mix. Our bartender who's name I can't recall was so funny and personable. She's great and made recommendations. Tried the jerk shrimp which were large, juicy, and flavorful. Would've loved a nice little pan sear, but was still good snapper coconut sauce was large and amazing. I normally have escovitch snapper and wanted to try this. Perfect recommendation from the bartender. My friend had the oxtail= 8 out of 10 rating. It was good but not the best. Keep in mind, the music was loud and the lighting is very low. For drinks, we had the lychee martini Moscato. The drinks were pretty decent and the menu had a good selection overall. The staff were very welcoming and attentive to our group of five, especially the birthday girl. We had to wait for our entire party to arrive and we were seated in the back area that held two large tables for large groups and their set up was cool and semi private. For drinks, three friends ordered 2 rounds of regular rum punches and I had ONE coco rum punch. My drink was good and not strong which I was grateful for because I'm a lightweight drinker. We all ordered one appetizer each and everyone had a seafood app and I had the mango spicy wings. For entrees, we had salmon, snapper, shrimp and I had the chicken rasta pasta. A decent neighborhood spot to check out. I came here on a Thursday evening with a party of 6. It was pretty empty at 5pm which was great. The wait time from ordering to getting our entrees was an hour. Granted we did have a couple of appetizers and we were a party of 6 but 2 of them were kids that shared an appetizer. When we ordered, there was only 3 other tables and 2 people at the bar so it wasn't as if they were busy. You could see other tables getting slightly frustrated as well. The excuse was that everything is fresh and from scratch but as my sister pointed out, don't most restaurants do the same?? The food wasn't bad but it also wasn't worth the wait in my opinion. The calamari honestly was the best part. My roti didn't have much flavor and my mom said her fish was just ok as well. Overall: It's a decent neighborhood restaurant. I know that the reviews are a mixed bag but both times that I have been to the Cove have been great experiences! I went with a large party of 25+ the first time and then in a small group of two girls the second time. The food was plentiful and you'll be able to take your leftovers home for work the next day lol plus the food is really good. I was told that the rum punch was strong and the coconut rum punch wasn't too tasty our table also tried the strawberry margaritas which were rated a 10/10 by the table ! I had a strawberry lemonade and Rasta pasta which was really good and definitely 2 servings worth of food . The service was great, the waiters were patient and attentive. We went around 7/8 pm. Now the reason I rated this restaurant 4/5 stars is because towards the end of the night ( 8-10pm )the service tends to slow down. The bill and our last drink took significantly longer to come to our table so I can definitely understand the reviews that complain about slow service. The table was small and we did order 4 apps and ask for the little serving plates but still. They could have cleared the empty ones without asking if we were done with plates that we were still eating on. Also having to ask for someone to bring water was annoying. They knew we didn't have drinks. Bring us something. The candle on the table kept going out. They were showing some show on tv and Some people were very much having sex and the employees were kind of standing around and watching. It was strange. Not even a goodnight as we walked out. I really want to frequent more establishments in the area and see Merrick blvd flourish and keep up with other bar/restaurant areas like Bell or Steinway but the service in our community needs to be better. The bartender did not go light. We ordered the cod fish fritters, calamari, and escovitch wings for our appetizer. All 5/5. Dinner included oxtail, rice and peas, mixed veg, and plantains. The food was flavored, an ok portion for the oxtail at least, and fresh. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. The one downside I would say is the price point. New restaurant, super pretty decor and definitely good for a photo op. Went there for brunch with a party of 13 and service was pretty bad. Some people got their entrees without their appetizer. Some people didn't get glasses for the champagne. Food was average - I got a garden salad and the chicken and waffles. The waffle was actually pretty good but the chicken was really dry. Decided to go here on date night, and I'm not going to lie, the reviews weren't looking too good on this place. Parking wasn't so easy but we found some. We were immediately seated but I asked if we could be reseated and the hostess (not sure if she was having a bad day or not) seemed to have an attitude and told me it wasn't possible due to the seat I wanted being for 6 people. I told her cool no problem and waited to be served. The spacing is SMALL. The first thing I noticed was how small the table was. I eventually ordered the Codfish Fritters,Oxtail Rasta Pasta and, rum punch. That food is GOOD. The service might be touch and go, but the food is REALLY good!
