Just got the worst hair cut I've had in years from this salon. The stylist Heather Joy was supposed to give me a basic blunt shoulder length cut. Instead, she bobbed it and cut it really unevenly. She didn't style it, just put a bunch of oil in my very fine hair and said it would "sink in after a while." The whole time, she complained about an "awkward" customer with a another stylist there. This will take me months to grow out. Should have realized that it was a red flag that she was able to get me in very last minute. Get your hair done by this person at your own risk. read more

As a lifelong natural blonde, I have been easily identified by my light locks-- that is, until I hit my 40's and it started to grow in darker (steadily progressing to a spectrum that I knew nothing of). Initially I thought I would ride this out and embrace it, yet I soon felt mousy, and was therefore forlorn. On a recommendation, I went to Drew to have her highlight my hair----- minimally and VERY blonde was my instruction! She was such a professional hairstylist, plus, she is so warm and engaging. She really knows what to do to enhance your natural beauty. My end result made me feel 10 years younger. The best part? No one noticed or commented because it was the color they were used to me being. It was like they forgot the dark days, and just thought I looked happier and very well rested. I have never enjoyed every aspect of a salon this much, from the welcoming, lovely and fun stylists down to the funky yet simple decor. The offerings at this salon are absolutely upper echelon but without the pretentiousness! I worked with hair artiste extraordinaire, Aylah, whose eclectic skill and talent is thus far completely unparalleled, in my 30 years of experience receiving haircuts. Although, while I was in the chair and observing the other stylists working around me I can say I am very impressed all the way around! In regard to my hair, it's not the easiest to work with by any means, it's very fine and long, yet heavy, stubbornly straight and heavy and seems to get horrible split ends and unruly tangles no matter what I do. Thanks to Aylah, she transformed my limp, damaged locks into a chic, flirtatious, richly layered cascade of gorgeousness! She's a beautiful, warm-hearted person and pours immense love and care into her work, is immensely receptive to the desires of her clients and completely committed to bringing their authentic beauty and truth to the forefront. I have never had a better experience at a hair salon. Jade completely understood that I like having long hair and I don't like upkeep, she listened to all my worries and we came to decisions together about my haircut and styling. The haircut itself is amazing and turned my frazzled long hair into wavy, slightly less long hair but I think the most fantastic part for me was skipping the "barbie blowout" as Jade called it, and instead styling my hair in a way that I could realistically replicate without a styling team at home. This amounted to two products that take no skill or effort to use, and it worked! I left coven with my hair looking exactly as I always hope it will look like after a cut, but until now never had. I first heard about Coven three years ago after literally chasing a curly haired woman down the street to ask her where she got her hair cut. Because I am unusually loyal, I waited years to give them a try, until my regular hair cutter had moved away. I finally tried them, and I am very pleased. They absolutely know curly hair. They are not pretentious, and also not ridiculously over priced. I do not do anything special to my hair. The absolute most that I will do to "style" it is get it wet. That was fine with them. They gave me a cut that looks good, and requires zero maintenance. I have already recommended them to my best friend. If you are deep in contemplation, think no longer. Make an appointment. Less than an hour after a particularly traumatic haircut experience, I called Coven in tears and was promptly fit into their schedule for a same-day appointment to fix the mess that was on my head (and in my heart, if I'm being honest.) I was paired with Jenny, one of the owners, and the moment I arrived, I was given champagne and a yummy deep conditioning treatment, followed by a wonderful shampoo/scalp massage by Madison, who also sat with me and chatted while I waited under the dryer. I'm blanking on the name of the receptionist, but she also sat with me. I was a bit of a hot mess, and the girls were in swoop-and-restore mode, which was amazing. Then Jenny got to work, and in her capable hands, my confidence and self-esteem were restored, and I watched in the mirror as I became "me" again, snip by snip. OK, I'll admit it - I've almost never been a hair monogamist. I've rarely stuck with the same stylist for more than a year or two, always searching for that perfect color and cut - I also like a nice vibe in the salon. YES I WANT IT ALL! My hair is not easy - thin, fine, wavy, not much body, dishwater blonde, and prone to frizz. I like an edgy look, but I'm just not willing to put the time into styling my hair every day. To sum up, I'm probably not the ideal client: I need direction, but I have LOTS of opinions :) .ANYWAY I wanted to try Coven since I heard that hair rockstar Jenny Slay from Vain had opened this cool new neighborhood salon. Based on Yelp and some recommendations from friends, I booked cut and color with Drew - and I walked out of there a very happy woman. Drew is really a great listener, and she's a highly experienced stylist and hair realist: she talked me down from my Joan Jett hair fantasies to a cool layered/shaggy ombre look that I can maintain. Weeks later, my hair still looks awesome and I get lots of compliments. Also, the salon is a cute, super-fun vibe with great products, reasonable prices, awesome music, and plenty of parking to boot. I had so much fun chatting with the stylish ladies at Coven that the time literally flew by...and when I left, they loaded me up with Bumble& Bumble samples YES THANK YOU!! Back in February I had my hair colored and it didn't turn out how I liked. I had an appointment to fix it, but I had to leave the Seattle area for about a month. I thought I was out of the window to get my hair fixed, but they called me asking if I still wanted to fix it. I thought that was so amazing of them! This place is really great though and they want you to feel confident about your hair. Today they fixed my hair and Drew showed me some tips on curling my hair in a quick way. She is so nice and great conversation. Drew also gave me a little head massage after she did my shampooing, which was excellent! The atmosphere there is warm, friendly, and it smells heavenly in there. I love their art work in there too. What is a nice touch is they offer you the opportunity to put on one of their robes or one of their shirts, so if you don't want lose hair on your shirt for the rest of the day, that is a good route to go with. They also care about the health of your hair and since I had my hair bleached on the ends Drew made sure my hair would look healthy and be healthy for what I was doing. I really would recommend this place because they go above and beyond. Also I got to enjoy the company of an adorable little puppy who was so cute. read more

Took my daughter to Heather because I was told she was an expert on curly hair and had been cutting hair for a long time. her haircut was fine so I went there since my last hairstylist was having a baby. I showed her a picture and then because I had to rush out when she was done and they were closing, I didn't have a chance to really "sit" with my cut. She did something with my bangs that looks like it is totally disconnected from the rest of my hair and I had told her my bags get heavy and I needed them to be lighter. Now they are just a chunk of hair. I thought I would give it a week of wash and wear to make sure it wasn't me and then I contacted her and let her know I was struggling because of my bangs and I had wanted more face framing, which I had also told her during my cut. She booked an appointment and told me it was going to be $18 for a bang trim! And that she considered 2 weeks grow out time! What? I'll pass! I've never had a salon charge me if I'm not happy with my cut and just need a touch up! They have just lost 2 customers! And way too much swearing in the salon; very unprofessional! read more

I'll start out by saying that these people are so nice -- I love them as people (*and they have contacted me to try to improve my experience -- thank you)... but I feel like there should be some warning before a person takes a scissors to your hair that it's a completely (random) dry cut. I simply don't believe in dry cuts, and this last experience at Coven proved (once again) why. Unless you have super-tight curls or kinky hair that lands in the same place every single time no matter WHAT (no matter the humidity level, whether it's been pulled back all day, it's day 2 without washing, whatever), you end up waking up from your dry cut the next day looking like a 4-year-old took a scissors to your hair. It looks sloppy and uneven and falls poorly. I have medium curls -- they get tighter in the humid weather -- and much, much looser in the Seattle cool season. After a couple weeks of trying to live with this cut, my hair looks absolutely awful and I'm going to have to spend yet another $80 and go way shorter than I wanted to in order to fix it. Pretty painful on both my budget and psyche at the moment :( Overall I'd just say, KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO here! Make sure you understand your hair texture if you're going to get a dry cut, and tell the stylist you want less off than what you think... read more
