Cowabunga is a quaint sandwich shop in Wakefield that I enjoy visiting every summer! The locally owned shop has a wide variety of handmade sandwiches that are named after RI staple locations! My only complaint is they aren't open nearly enough. They are open during the week from 11-5 which is a little bit late if you want to grab a sandwich before the beach. If you're heading down to the beach late definitely stop by and grab a sandwich or if you can hold off until after the beach it's worth stopping! read more

Five stars every time!! I would give more if I could! The sandwiches are fresh and delicious the smoothies are refreshing and tasty. The staff is always friendly and courteous. Recently, i went with my friend and her 7 year old daughter who told the staff her sandwich ("Lunch Lady" ) was the best sandwich she'd ever eaten. The young lady was so sweet and she gave both our kiddos decals! They were stoked! The lunch lady is my favorite sandwich and I have to agree these are the best sandwiches. Bread is freshly made and all ingredients are high quality. The atmosphere is fun and beachy- perfect for our little beach town! This place has a great vibe!! Wakefield has become one of our favorite small towns in Rhode Island- though we normally stop in to shop and get a drink at the soda fountain... but hadn't eaten there until this trip. My mom and I both love delis/sandwich shops and the menu and reviews here looked good so we decided to give it a try! Luckily, we stopped in right before they went away for a winter vacation. One day later and we'd have missed out. I'm not a vegetarian but I love falafel and it sounded good on the chilly day we went. My mom normally does choose vegetarian sandwiches but went with a salami and cheese sub. The Snug Harbor falafel is craveable (it's falafel, hummus, tomato, onion, banana peppers, pickles, tzatziki, on ciabatta). I got mine without tomato. I love really acidic foods so this appealed to me before I even tasted it. Every ingredient was tasty and the combination was creative yet made so much sense! We loved sitting at the large wooden table and enjoying all the natural light and the bright wall mural. One of the owners was who took our order and she was very friendly. We didn't mind that it took a few minutes for our sandwiches to come out- they were being made fresh and mine was a warm sandwich. Mom also thought her sandwich was tasty and much larger than she expected. We ended up visiting RI again just a few weeks later but Cowabunga was closed due to the owners being on holiday. This place doesn't have a bathroom, which is something to keep in mind if you're visiting. It's still a nice casual place to get a great sandwich and eat there or take it with you and head to a nearby park or beach. They had some cookies when I went last time but I was too full. I'm going to make sure I get one to go next time I visit! read more

So, let me start by saying that it takes quite a bit to impress me and more so to get 5 starts out of me. I had the BEAST & CHEESE for $9.45...It had grilled roast beef, American cheese, peppers, onions, horseradish, mayo, it is a fun take on a steak and cheese with what is clearly home made roast beef. It was juicy and delicious. Also a big puls... they served it on GLUTENFREE BREAD! On another occasion I delved into the perfect sandwich... the Cowabungas Rubin. Perfectly balanced and delicious with what i can only imagine in also home made cornbeef. Loaded with flavor! Lastly, on the second time i went here i grabbed a smoothie. If i have any regrets about the smoothie, it would be that i didn't buy one here the first time i went!!! Their SMOOTHIES use real fruit, no fruit syrups. And i recomend getting the bunga blend ( milk, yogurt & honey). My favorite smoothie is the GREEN HILL $6.45 mango, pineapple, raspberry, bunga blend, apple juice... the citrus hits hard and tastes so good... and its not two sweet. The mango is delicious! Another thing that really struck me was how smooth the blend was... it was like sipping a dels lemonade. Very well done!!! This place is a must go to stop on the way to or from one of south county's many beautiful beaches. And the prices and quality of food cant be beat!!! And they are conveniently located in Wakefield only a stones throw from one of my favorite ice-cream parlors, Brickley's... Overall I give them a 9/10. I'll be stopping in for lunch today! We decided we wanted to get take out and go sit on the beach and watch the sunset, so we cane across Cowabunga. 2 of my friends are "super healthy" eaters and this place has something for everyone. 1st let me say the ordering process was easy and efficient. We ordered via phone and then called when we got to the restaurant and they came out to give us the food. I got the Cuban, which was good. The other 3 people ordered the Wakefield, 2 added grill chicken to the sandwich. All were delicious, you can tell they use fresh ingredients. The only issue is they didnt give us any napkins or anything, which isn't the end of the world, more annoying. Gice it a shot for sure! read more

They offer a kids menu and limited breakfast options. The restaurant's decor fits the local crowd. The food is fresh and their attn to detail is fabulous. This visit I had a "Kingstown rd", a Turkey, am cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, green peppers, 1000 island dressing on a grinder roll. You should definitely check them out. What a little gem this is! Wakefield NEEDED a spot that makes fresh, delicious artisan sandwiches, and Cowabunga is it. The place is perfect for both a quick grab-and-go lunch and a simple sit-down dinner--Fresh ingredients, creative combinations, very friendly staff, a clean but somewhat empty space (I do wish it to be cozier). Some sandwiches I've tried: Cowabunga: 5/5. THE best sandwich. Thick layers of free range chicken, generous amount of fresh avocado. And who knew Siracha goes so well with marble rye? Sharp, spicy, fresh, hearty, grilled all the way through. Turkey BLT: 5/5. Simple and effective. A double decker with a ton of fresh turkey and perfect amount of lettuce and tomatoes on classic white bread--toasted till golden and crunchy. South county: 4/5. Fresh apples and muenster cheese is a combination that cannot go wrong. Crisp, light, and tart, on a hearty multigrain bread. Shark attack: 3/5. I'm biased on this one. I do like a barbecue flavor but not a lot. This wrap has intense flavors and barbecue and teriyaki. Though it's balanced out by the slaw, I do find there to be a little too much barbecue chips. Nonetheless, the idea of having chips in a wrap is great on its own. Cuban: 2/5. Unfortunately after eating a proper Cuban in Cuba, it's hard to find Cuban sandwiches that are on par. It wasn't exactly memorable as I do not remember what it tastes like. The pickles should be sweeter to balance out the saltiness. Would love to try more of this place!!! read more

We stopped here hot and sweaty after a long, hot hike and had a perfect lunch. I had one of the Bunga Style wraps filled with chips. Mine had turkey, fresh mozzarella, avocado, sriracha and Maui onion chips which really brought the wrap to the next level. We decided to pick up lunch and head on over to the wall near Monahan's in Gansett to enjoy the view and devour our delicious choices. I got the pressed cuban and it was perfect. I couldn't put it down. It was grilled/pressed to perfection, bursting with flavor and the perfect ratio of fillings to pickle so that with each bite, the vinegar in the pickles would cut through the richness of everything else. Bite after bite, it was as if every bite, was the perfect bite. I got a bag of salt & pepper kettle chips which provided the right amount of crunch. Oh, and the lemonade, the delicious strawberry lemonade. It was a bit on the sweeter side but was the perfect beverage to wash down my delicious lunch. read more

We've also taken every house guest and family member we've had at our house to cowabunga and everyone is kind of speechless over the sandwiches. During covid times, Miranda comes out and delivers sandwiches curbside, always with a sunny disposition and is quick to appreciate her customers and makes friendly conversation. I heard that this is a new location when I was vacationing in Rhode Island, and I definitely looks new, as not many people were there when I went in to get my family some lunch. I myself had a cuban, and was very impressed by how delicious it was. The employees pushed for their frozen lemonade and I am glad I bought it because it was absolutely amazing. This place was very clean and refined and organized, but I worry for when it gets busy, as there was only two people working when I went in. Great sandwiches! Quality ingredients in original and tasty combinations. However, I ordered a matunuck and added roast beef. The wrap was $8.95 and they charged $3.99 for a couple slices of meat. Seems a little steep to me. Again, the wraps we ordered were great but I was a little taken a back but the substantial up charge. My husband and son had been to this great little sandwich shop for lunch when they were visiting the University of Rhode Island in the spring. When they returned to NJ they raved about the sandwiches so naturally, when we went up to Rhode Island this weekend to drop my son off for his freshman year we decided to get lunch there. I had a sandwich called the Hot Mess, a great name and a great combination of ingredients which made for an awesome sandwich. My husband and son both decided to try the Blue & White, my daughter had the Chicken Ceasar wrap and everyone was very satisfied with their choices. Everything is homemade using fresh ingredients and you can taste that in each bite. To top off the experience we all had frozen lemonades which were hands down the best we'd ever tasted!
