After wandering around Santa Fe, we walked past Coyote Cantina and decided to pop in for a drink! It was the middle of the day Friday and their rooftop cantina had about a 15 minute wait for a table if 5. Not long after our wait, we were seated under a shaded area at a high top! The view was great & it's definitely a vibe being on the roof! It was pretty well shaded all around. I can't remember the name of our server but he was super attentive & checked up on a us regularly. We all got a cocktail which were delicious and decided to share an order of their nachos. We subbed chicken for our nachos and it came with an extra plate of chopped chicken on the side! I was rather confused about the two Coyote restaurants joining together. And quite frankly, I significantly refer the Cafe menu more than the Cantina menu. The cantina menu is small and almost everything is basic except for the griddled corn cakes which I haven't had before. The service was alright with water refilled when requested, not automatically. The area is cute and an overlook of Santa Fe Square. Food is overall average and way pricey. The salsa and chips are $8 with no refill 1/5. The griddle corn cakes are covered in hot sauce and shrimp. It was edible but not overly delicious. 3/5 The nacho is drown in toppings which is good. I have no complaint. 5/5. I would take people here for drinks but maybe not food. read more

It was slightly windy night Sunday night. I asked the server to help me choose between two different drinks and he helped me settle on the house margarita with salty lime foam and it was fantastic! And seeing as how, I am a spice weenie I also asked him to help me understand what is not spicy on the menu. He told me several things were and I chose the Al Pastor tacos and they were fabulous. The pineapple was a wonderful delight. My friend and I started with the queso and the house made chips for delightfully salty. We were in Santa Fe for the day. and wanted to grab a bite to eat. What was interesting is when we googled this place we initially saw pictures for what we would later find out was the Coyote Café located downstairs. She didn't even ask us if we were there for the café or the Cantina or explain that there are two different restaurants. She just immediately directed us upstairs once we said we were there to dine. We were told the café didn't open until 5 PM so we dined at the cantina. I kept it simple and ordered some chips and queso and a chicken quesadilla. I asked for onions thinking they would grill it and add it to my quesadilla but instead they just gave me a side of dice raw onions. That was a little disappointing. The quesadilla was okay but nothing to write home about. I ate one piece and left the rest. Not having the grilled onions in it, ruined the experience for me. Our server was Tom and he was pretty friendly and knowledgeable. My company patronized the bar, and Tom was very knowledgeable about the drinks and even spent some time giving us some information on the area since we were visiting from out of town. We expressed that we were killing time until the café opened downstairs because my company really wanted muscles and that was not on the menu in the Cantina, but it was on the menu in the café. I think the cantina is perfect if you're just looking for a place to have a few drinks and an appetizer, I wouldn't necessarily come here hungry trying to curb my appetite. If you're into enchiladas and tacos you'll enjoy it. It's not my preferred cuisine. I think it's also worth mentioning that we shared that it was my company's birthday, and Tom had some churros that came with a side of caramel and chocolate delivered to our table, which was a nice touch. read more

What a colorful place! For a first time in Sante Fe, Coyote Cantina did NOT disappoint! I went with my good ole faithful of fish tacos because I always like to see - #1 what kind of fish is used, and #2, how battered is the fish? The mahi mahi was beautifully and lightly battered to allow the slaw and mango slices to shine through. The tortillas held their own too. Coyote Café Cantina: When a Longtime Flame Goes Cold I've been coming to Coyote Café's cantina for decades. It has felt exciting, inventive, and fun. Last night, though, I had the sinking realization: it's just not that anymore. The nachos were the heartbreak of the evening. Imagine if you took all the joy of nachos, those crispy edges, melty cheese, the distinct layering of flavors and textures, and then threw it all in a blender, poured it out in a heap, and called it a day. They were basically a beige pile of mush. The empanadas were good, but not memorable. A little more interesting and tasty than frozen ones at Trader Joe's. To be fair, the menu had potentially inventive versions of things like ceviche and gazpacho, but Santa Fe pulled a fast one with fall weather. I was bundled in a hoodie and not about to slurp cold soup while shivering. Still, even with that accounted for, what we ordered just wasn't interesting, well and the nachos weren't even good. Service was another story. Our waiter took our order and then vanished like he'd gone into witness protection. No mid-meal check-in, no chance for me to order the second margarita I definitely would have had. I only managed to flag him down when he was sprinting past toward the kitchen to grab our check, which was pure luck. I don't think it was the wait staffs fault, they weren't lounging around, this was bad restaurant management. Yeah, the management quirks... wow. Most restaurants let you order a drink while you wait. Here you can't go into the bar and do that. So,, after a full half-hour __standing__ around, someone eventually came out to take drink orders. It felt less like hospitality and more like a staffing shortage no one wanted to admit. Noise was the final cherry on top. Maybe sitting right by the kitchen was the culprit, but our table of three had to yell at each other like we were competing with a protest rally. Not exactly rooftop magic. I'll always have affection for this place. And I know I'll continue to go a few times a year. But based on last night, the cantina feels more like a faded postcard than the vibrant destination it used to be. read more

We've visited the coyote cafe rooftop every time we've visited for many years and I am pleased to say their food and service have continued to be fantastic, especially compared to other spots in the square. I ordered the fish tacos which were a great portion size and very well made, but most of my party ordered the green chile chicken soup and said it was very good. So this review is just for the Rooftop Cantina. They have a different menu for the fancier indoor Coyote Cafe(that seems to be open only for dinner). The ambiance at this Coyote Rooftop Cantina restaurant is fun because you're eating at the top of the building. It's all shaded so that's great. They also have a fancy restaurant inside which offers upscale New Mexican food that I would like to try because the menu looks intriguing. As for the roof top restaurant it was good but not great. The service was great - everyone was friendly and we hit seated quickly and got our food quickly. The food was a solid 3 out of 5 stars (I'm from Southern California where there's TONS of amazing Mexican food so I can be picky). My fish tacos were ok. Good but nothing out of the ordinary. I tried my friends chicken green chile enchiladas and I didn't like it at all. 1 out of 5 stars. The salsa tasted bitter to me and in my small piece she let me sample I got 3 bones. They said they had a new chicken supplier so hopefully they'll get that sorted out. The cornbread that came with the enchiladas was tasty. Overall I'd try the indoor fancier Coyote Cafe version at this location but probably not return to the rooftop. read more

My Manhattan was spot on. The tacos were filling and tasty. The service was a bit hit or miss. We asked for a high top table only to be told it wasn't available and then seeing other diners being seated at it. We ordered quac and chips that never arrived. Very disappointing experience at Coyote Cafe. We were told our small puppy was not allowed upstairs in the open-air cantina area, even though it's not fully enclosed. The staff was unfriendly and not accommodating at all. On top of that, the food was underwhelming and definitely not worth the price. The inside part of the restaurant looked great. I headed up to the rooftop. I was seated quickly. Great people watching if you sit on the edge of the outside of the upstairs restaurant. Margaritas were amazing! I recommend the Fish Tacos. Chips and salsa- FYI. They are not free/ or part of the meal. $8. The atmosphere is fun and loud! The only reason I gave the restaurant a 4 star was because the waiter was a little slow with his service and I ordered a side of black beans but never got them. Amazing delicious food and drinks. We were in Santa Fe for a quick vacation. CC was recommended to us by a local. We amazingly got a reservations and were welcomed by their wonderful staff. Our experience at the Coyote Cafe far exceeded all of my expectations. We had 5 people on our party. The Owner seated us and took our drink orders. We felt pretty special. Cocktails are always first for us, I enjoyed an Aperol Spritz and the guys had the house crafted smokey Manhattan. Hey worth the show alone to order this one. A container of cornbread sticks and whipped butter appeared at our table and within minutes devoured, flagging staff to bring more. Next up, first course. Pumpkin soup on the menu, I'm all in. This bowl of yummy is poured tableside in a bowl beautifully studded with seed and nuts, delish! I was so busy slurping down my soup and inhaling breadsticks I didn't notice was everyone else had. I think... my bf had the rolled Caesar a unique preparation of the traditional salad. The menu has a nice assortment of entrees. I had the crispy branzino in with kaffir lime-coconut broth served over Forbidden Rice with pickled shemeji, mushrooms and shiso. Honestly, I would like a pool of sauce to swim in. This was outstanding. Other had the grilled rack of lamb, tenderloin and quail. Everyone said that their meals were great. Just when I thought I couldn't eat one more bit, someone ordered the pecan tart and the yuzu blueberry thingy... I'm not a big pecan tart person, but I had to try the yuzu thingy.... okay think lemon/blueberry biscuits with lemon curd ON STEROID. Wow.... box one for me to take home please. A very popular downtown Santa Fe rooftop spot that's attached to a fancier indoor dining experience, the Coyote Cafe & Rooftop Cantina (rooftop part) is a great way to experience the town. The views are nice, alternative "city" views and what you'd dream of if your destination was downtown Santa Fe! Take in the buildings around you, peep the sunset, and people watch! Service is great for a very popular (especially on the weekend) spot. It can get crowded, and if you sit at the perimeter counter (around the outside of the rooftop, like bar seating), you'll have your server approach you from the back, so be prepared for that! If it's windy, I recommend avoiding sitting at the perimeter counter seating, the wind blows over all the food and drinks, not so great. But if it's just cold, (or hot) they have solutions for that, plus you can wear more (or less!) and solve the temperature issue yourself! Food is ok, the trio dip was good, but we needed a second serving of chips to finish the dips. I had the frito pie, which was just as it sounds... nothing special, a step up from Sonic, but it was tasty. Next time I'd probably get something more signature for the area, coming from Texas, I have some high expectations for Latin-American inspired foods (TexMex anyone?). Would definitely come back, though! The ambiance and vibe of the rooftop is a great way to end a day with friends and a casual and fun feel. It's a whole process getting up to the rooftop cantina (or atleast it was for us), but once you're there, all the formalities of the restaurant below melt away. It's a total vibe. While it's a tight squeeze moving around in the restaurant, from the crackling fire to the blaring music and incredible amount of color packed into one place, even so, this place is so fun and full of energy! While the queso wasn't my favorite, and everything else was typical, Their prawn and corn cake dish is in the top tier of dishes I tried in Sante Fe! Coyote Cafe has turned into a fast casual restaurant, missing all of the signature trademarks that made it such a well-loved restaurant in Santa Fe for many years. The food was good, no longer great -- the service awful -- rushed. We arrived on a cold, snowy night. There were few tables occupied. We were greeted and immediately seated at a table away from the main dining room. I ordered one of their signature cocktails -- it was served immediately. ..and then we ordered appetizers and entrees. I might have had a sip or two of my cocktail, when all of the food was delivered at once -- appetizers and entrees. Why couldn't Clifford, our server, or the kitchen space out our meal? By the time we ate the appetizer, the entrees were cold. All told, from arrival time to cashing out the bill, we spent a total of 34 minutes in Coyote Grill.
