Belgium Waffle Combo
Eugene B.

My dish (Belgium waffle combo + coffee) was standard and nothing outstanding. I sat at the bar and was intrigued by how synchronized the staff was. A server holding a tray of four full plates over her shoulder while holding a fifth plate with her right hand and maneuvering through the tight space between the front counter (where I ate) and the window to the kitchen. 5 professionals in the kitchen working to fill order-ins, take outs, and door dash. Another server makes sure everyone has a full cup of coffee. All 13-20 employees are constantly moving to keep the diner machine humming. The customers had a local community vibe. Old and young. It's a cornerstone gem that sits at the corner of Clark and Devon.

On a blisteringly cold morning in Edgewater, we hurried to Cozy Corner for some warmth and it arrived in a steaming mug of black coffee. Shortly after, I got my standard by which to measure any diner: two eggs over easy, three slices of bacon, hash browns and toast. The eggs were perfectly runny (with hot sauce on the table, always a plus), the bacon was crisp and salty, the toast was crunchy and soft at the same time. And the hash browns were a mix of browned and unbrowned. Just the way I like it. I worked my way through the standard American diner fare and as soon as my cup was empty, it was refilled by our server Maria V, who knew exactly what I needed before I asked. I always love a good diner, and Cozy Corner in Edgewater is a good diner for sure. If you haven't been here yet, give it a try!

This is a definitely our go to, really a regular tradition now, for me and my partner. The staff is so awesome and greets us warmly every time. The food is consistently delicious. They have an abundance of booth seating which we love! I think I've avoided writing a review cuz I don't want our spot to get too crowded if the secret gets out more than it already is!! There's a steady flow of customers which is always a sign of a good restaurant! And I love that the staff is happy! Super important! Definitely recommend this place!

Food and service were fantastic! Great greasy spoon spot. First place I've found in Chicago where the grits are done right. Jami was great!

Cozy Corner is always a super solid breakfast / brunch place, no matter which branch. I'll review Edgewater specifically, since I go regularly - probably ever other Sunday! - because it's always such a treat. The ambiance is always bright and cozy, the diner-style tables, booths, and bar are comfy, and the servers are absolutely lovely, efficient, and welcoming. Cozy Corner is always pretty solidly busy especially on weekends, but wait times are generally less than 15 minutes (in my experience). Limited parking lot available next to restaurant, but I believe parking is also available across the street at Devon Hardware. Food is always delicious and quick, and great portions - you really get a great value. This location serves 2 brunch cocktails as well - impressive Bloody Mary (according to my beau) and I can vouch for the delicious (and strong!) Mimosas (the freshly squeezed orange juice is phenomenal on its own, as well). For fun - If you use the "Too Good to Go" app that combats food waste, you can purchase a surprise bag of leftovers from Cozy Corner for $5.99 for pick up in the afternoon. They are quite popular and sell out quickly the night before! Did it once and got loads of delicious Macaroni and Cheese, Hash Browns (my weakness), and a large container of soup. Very fun! And I love that they help combat food waste this way. Breakfast or Lunch, this is an affordable go-to and neighborhood staple. Highly recommend.

I had a booooomb breakfast at cozy corner. Ok admittedly I just got the classics: scrambled eggs, bacon, and chocolate chip pancakes. But everything tasted so FRESH. The bacon I swear had to have been just cooked, it was hot and crispy and soooo good. The eggs were fluffy and delicious. The chocolate chip pancakes were plentiful! Everything was awesome. The prices were pretty steep but it was worth it! I feel like I pay similar (maybe slightly less) for the same breakfast at other spots but the food isn't nearly as fresh, tasty, or as large of portions. Highly recommend cozy corner for a casual breakfast spot! Oh - and they have flavored creamers for coffee. My fave!

Turkey Sausage Patties

Ordered out here for some shrimp and grits. They have Cajun shrimp and grits on the menu. I order the grits and shrimp with a side of turkey sausage patties. The grits were good. The grits come with shrimp, bits of real bacon, bits of sliced green onion and cheese. The portion is enough for 3 people to eat off. The turkey sausage is tasty and not overcooked. The shrimp were nicely cooked the way shrimp should be cooked. The way the grits are prepared makes them Cajun but this is not grits and shrimp cooked with Louisiana red sauce. I enjoyed this meal! If you are hungry for cheesy grits with Cajun shrimp and bacon this is your place for sure! I recommend.

I got this one sandwich that I be trying and it's decent asl. Sometimes the waiters take too long even when we came in before other people.

The Original Pancake House has a menu to rival IHOP when it comes to pancake and crepe selection. So much to choose from! When we arrived around 8:15am, there were plenty of tables inside and outside on their tree covered patio, and the staff let us know we could sit anywhere we liked. We chose a table inside but the outside area is beautiful if you want to enjoy the Chicago summer. Our server arrived quickly and was very friendly. The kitchen was so fast it felt like she took our order, walked back to the kitchen, and returned with our meals. Their standard egg breakfasts come with a stack of pancakes - you can pay a little more to upgrade to one of the fun flavors, so we chose blueberry. The portions were so massive I ended up ordering two side dishes for my breakfast, and I still couldn't finish it all. The blueberry pancakes were filled with fresh blueberries and SO good, the egg scramble with feta was delicious, and the home fries were pretty good. Our server asked if I wanted them crispy. I said no, but I should have said yes. They were a little soft - still delicious - but you can tell they'd be even better with a bit of a crispy edge. The prices may seem a little high, but when you see how much food you get for the price, you'll realize what a deal it is. Each meal could easily feed two people! We were in and out in under an hour and everyone who worked here was lovely. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu on our next visit!

The kitchen clearly communicates with the rest of the servers because even the food runners reconfirmed the allergy-free dishes/adjustments when serving our table which is so rare! So often we try to confirm an allergy adjustment was made with the person dropping off the food and they have no clue what we are talking about. I had the corned beef hash, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, while my husband ordered the Mexican omelet with taco meat, and he couldn't stop talking about how good it was. We also enjoyed an iced coffee and a chocolate shake, both of which were fantastic. Of course, we couldn't resist trying a few extras, so we ordered the chocolate-covered pancakes and potato pancakes for the table. Both were incredible and the perfect addition to our meal. Between the delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and friendly service, this was such a great experience. We will definitely be back the next time we're craving an amazing breakfast or brunch. I would assume a place where the newest thing since the 1980s is the security camera would have vinyl with more cracks and patina than my trusty old leather jacket! But no, it's in fantastic shape. Especially given that, the vibe in here is awesome! It's like stepping through a time-portal. For food, I ordered an old favorite: Pigs in Blankets. The food came out fast, though, to be fair, there was only one other person dining in at the time. The sausage links were crisp, and the pancakes were lightly sweet and fluffy. All in all, great! While perhaps not enough to summon the Michelin Guide inspectors, it was better than the average greasy spoon. Finally, I really appreciate that the prices are reasonable, and that there is parking! Final verdict: I've had a small handful of spectacular breakfasts. I've also had criminal breakfasts, where two unsalted eggs, two bacon strips, and a tablespoon of potatoes costs $14.95. Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House finds itself in that sweet spot in between - it is neither a spectacular spot (often have prices to boot), nor is it an overpriced, underwhelming greasy spoon that stays in business thanks to regulars who have been coming for decades and don't want anything better.

My omelette was delicious and perfectly cooked, the house potatoes were flavorful and very tasty. She also had bacon and eggs, which she said were pretty standard, but nothing special. She did say her iced latte was very good! She checked in with us multiple times no matter how busy she was, which we appreciate very much. However, there was one interaction that left me very uncomfortable. While we were dining, a hispanic employee was cleaning a table and a black male waiter brought guests over to be seated near us. He called out to the man cleaning, but he didn't hear him at first, which is completely understandable because it's pretty loud in there. The male waiter raised his voice and repeatedly called out to him in a very very aggressive manner. It was loud enough that other customers nearby turned their heads to see what was happening! I understand that restaurants can be busy and stressful, but the interaction came across as extremely hostile and unnecessarily disrespectful, and on top of that unprofessional. The employee being spoken to simply walked away, which made me wonder if this was something he was used to experiencing. As a person of color myself, this was something very disheartening to witness. I don't know who the waiter thinks he is to be talking to people like that, but even if he was manager or CEO, it still wouldn't have made that okay! Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect! The food was excellent and our service was great. However, I hope management addresses how some staff members communicate with one another. Speaking to someone in that manner is not okay in any kind of situation, and if you're going to be working with people, you need to have proper communication skills and respect for those around you. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, regardless of their position.
