Over the years, this has been one of my favorite places to go to for good comfort food. Trust me the stories that I have from here after late nights or early mornings are hilarious! I just love that they are consistently good with their items and it has been that way since I've been going for about the last 20 years. Recently, I got to try their Apple pancakes, and I have to brag about those. It's their pancakes with this apple compote on top and it is so good! It's sweet enough where you don't need any additional syrup if you don't want it because it's so balanced, but my son and I added some. We love them! I've been going to Golden Nugget for years. They're in my top 3 favorite Chicago dinners. Staff is always friendly and the service is good. Each location feels unique with their own seating/layout. The one on Lawrence has a lot of booth seating. So it's my personal favorite. The menu is big - as expected. Its spans breakfast and dinner, classic diner and Mexican. I've had both the breakfast and dinner sides. Everything has been either good or great. Never bad. Given the menus size, there's a lot I haven't had. That said my personal favorites are: BREAKFAST: - Chicken Fried Chicken Over Biscuits & Eggs. My current go-to. It may kill you but at least you'll go to heaven. - Pancakes - What they're known for. The environment is warm and smells of various delicious plates of Great food. The staff greeted me with even warmer dialogue and were quick to offer seating, menus and water. After ordering, the wait ; about 10-15 minutes for ( Cinnamon swirl pancakes, two sunny-side up eggs and two strips of bacon) , the food arrived in a beautiful presentation . Had breakfast today and honestly have to say they lost their flare. Pancakes were dry, like the batter was over mixed. Also ordered Corned Beef Hash Omelette which was greasy, and so was the hash browns, which were cold. I informed the waitress, and she brought back the same hash browns however now they were over cooked, close to burnt. read more

This has become one of my go to breakfast places, even if I do have to drive a bit to get to it. I've been three times and really enjoyed myself each time. I have a soft spot in my heart for diners/pancake houses like this and first found my way here one day when I was desperately craving pancakes. Although I was there in the late morning on a random weekday, it was fairly busy (and the modest parking lot was packed!). I was welcomed right away and told to sit anywhere. Their menu is huge: diner classics for breakfast/lunch/dinner, as well as Mexican favorites, and other modern dishes. I've always opted for breakfast, but I think I want to try some of their other options. My favorite is the Beglian waffle. You can tell it's one of their specialties. I haven't tried it with fruit as I haven't been there when berries are in season, but even the plain buttermilk one is delicious. They batter is already very light and buttery and then they give you a lot of butter to spread on top...it melts in your mouth and is the cure for what ails you. I appreciate that they offer a few combo specials with the waffle so you can get a good deal adding eggs, hash, etc. Each time I've been, I've had a really friendly waitress who you just want to spend time talking to. They are very on top of service and will refill your water glass before you can even ask. Note that you pay at the front and they prefer cash or debit, they'll charge you a fee if you pay with a credit card. Writing this has me wanting another waffle. June is about to end so I'm going to mark the transition into July with a review or few, including an update to my six-year-old screed of this family favorite of mine on the North Side. My most recent and first post-pandemic visit to Golden Nugget about three weeks ago came 2,194 days since I lobbed uncharacteristic criticisms about the eatery. At the time in 2017, I was a bit tired from my flight from Houston Hobby to Midway so what I ate back then was seemingly meh to me. It may please the cadre of you who thoroughly read my posts that I fell in love with GN again. My cousins, who actually grew up across the street, brought me here for a farewell breakfast in which I helped myself to a delicious, nicely cooked steak accompanied by a generous amount of scrambled eggs and hash browns. The meal may sound simple, but it did hit the spot for me. The Ravenswood neighborhood of which the place calls home has changed a lot, but it was great to return here and revive a dormant family tradition of ours. read more

Always love going to this particular Golden Nugget with family n friends! Always a friendly greeting when I walk in. The staff service from waitresses to busboys is always friendly, prompt and accommodating. I usually do breakfast and occasionally lunch here and it NEVER disappoints, so I'll imagine that dinner items are suitably on point and wouldn't hesitate to order a selection. The ambience is fine as the restaurant is well lit very clean. The food is extremely good and portions are large enough that I usually always end up getting a takeout container. My favorite selection is the Big Breakfast consisting of 2 sweet cream stuffed crepes w/ fruit compote and whipped cream, 2 eggs, 2 sausage links and 2 strips of bacon! And a side order of chunky seasoned breakfast potatoes. It's moderately priced and cash or a debit card is king. Sadly, use of a credit card tacks on a surcharge. Yesterday I ventured for the first time dining out solo. As a new experience for me I was very nervous going in to the unknown. My experience was less than pleasant due to staff and service. Upon entering I was yelled at by the receptionist to "find my own seat." Unaware of the seating arrangement at this restaurant her stern voice took me back, and made me think why couldn't she simply just state that I can pick my own table? As I'm seated with my menu the waitress arrives 2-3min later and ask "am I ready to order yet?" I thought it was rude she didn't bother introducing herself or even a simple hello before asking me if I'm ready, and when I stated "not yet, sorry!" walking away with an attitude instead of the usual "take your time" or something to that nature. Once the food finally arrived and others were eventually seated next to me I noticed everyone around me receiving warm welcoming service while the service I received was cold and rude for no apparent reason other than (the only difference between me and other patrons) the color of my skin. Dining out for the first time and receiving blatant racist service left an ungrateful taste in my mouth for the sub average, over priced food. Food is still good, ambiance is still standard pancake house, service was very much as it should be. The prices of definitely risen quite a bit, though. Coffee and soft drinks were $3.99. Mexican skillet was 16.99. I don't know if it's the neighborhood or just the general rising cost of food. Women's bathroom was clean, and had a sanitizer dispenser in the door handle. Do not order from this store on Uber Eats. Based on over a dozen orders you have 50/50 odds they will forget something. I am a fan of this place and used to go all the time in person. I order them all the time from Uber Eats, by my count at least 10 orders in the last 6 months and many more over the last couple years. The problem is they will forget things about half the time. I am not exaggerating. I usually get one of the Mexican dishes which should include salsa, and they will forget the salsa half the time. The last straw was my order today, which was a Mexican Dinner, and a Meatloaf. Not only did they forget the salsa, but they forgot the gravy. If you've ever had the meatloaf there, it usually comes with a whole small soup container worth of gravy. Leaving it out completely ruins the dish. They use the 'auto accept' feature on Uber Eats, which means you can't even leave a comment to remind them to include these items. I can't be the only one complaining about this on the app. If after more than a year it still hasn't been fixed I assume it never will be. read more

Ordered a Patty Melt the corner of the bread had mold a few sliver of burnt onion. The French fries were cold and dry. Also ordered some corned beef hash and chunky potatoes. Do not be deceived by the picture, you don't even receive a fourth of that. The chunky potatoes are just some French fries cut into cubes with no seasoning. They have such a wide range of food items. Unfriendly customer policies caused me to reduce ratings to two stars. 1- one of few restaurants in Chicago area charging a credit card surcharge. (To their credit well posted on site, but no where on Internet.) Restaurants should reflect menu prices that cover their costs and the profit margin they want, and not add surcharges to hide costs. I would give Golden Nugget a 3.5 but without anything setting it apart from other similar spots, I went with a 3. It's important to set the correct expectations when you come here. It's a 24-hour diner with 24-hour diner ambiance and food. It's pretty similar to other spots like this in the city: Hollywood Grill, Golden Apple, etc. A highlight was definitely the friendly and quick service. We never needed to ask for more water or coffee. My girlfriend went with the Chicken Fried Chicken and I went with the Farmer's Smoked Sausage Skillet. The fried chicken and biscuits were okay - nothing amazing but she ended up finishing the leftovers! While I liked my skillet, it was a bit heavy on the sausage and light on the cheese and seasoning. We both got our eggs over easy and they were made perfectly! The coffee was pretty good and always hot.
