Chorizo & Eggs
Mark T.

The quality is high, but the prices are even higher. With this, I am not convinced the value proposition is there. I ordered the Chorizo & Eggs. This was a simple dish with house-made chorizo, teaspoon of green sauce, half an avocado, two eggs, and some potatoes and bread. I want to award credit where it is due. The chorizo was better than any store-bought (or Sysco-delivered?) stuff of the same name I'd had. It had some heat and spice, without being overbearing. There was so little Salsa Verde that I am unable to give a proper description. When it comes to the potatoes, these were cooked perfectly, and had a touch of rosemary in their seasoning for added flavor. The eggs were just fine, and the avocado was at the peak of ripeness. This is all good and fine, until the price of $19 hits. I'm sorry to say, there was not $19 of food (incl the markup restaurants need for overhead, profit, etc.). Regarding the service, it was friendly, polite, and the food came out relatively fast (it was almost dead at the time). The vibe inside is simple, with many earthy tones. The fixtures have an industrial touch, and there is art interspersed throughout the space. Final verdict: If the Kanela Breakfast Club had lower prices, I would see myself coming back for a hearty, elevated meal. However, given the price point, I don't think I can justify a return visit.

I've been here several times and the staff is great. The food isn't bad either, we tried: - Fried Chicken Sandwich - Kanela Churro Waffle - California Benedict (w/bacon) - Strawberry Lemonade Honestly surprised by how good the churro waffle was, it was definitely sweet but in a good way. The fried chicken also hit the spot but would have been happier if they put more potatoes on the plate.

Service was a 10/10. Our server was so friendly and very knowledgeable and also the bartender. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch drinks were delicious and the crab cake Benedict was perfect. Would definitely come back again

Final breakfast of our trip-back to our favorite spot! Service with a smile and delicious breakfast. Today we ordered a Fried Egg Sandwich on a huge Bagel and a Goat Cheese Omelette. I loved my omelette and admired the bagel. Thank you, Kanela Chicago, for feeding us so well.

I was in the area and wanted breakfast so why not here...well....I didn't know if they were open because there were no customers inside and the lights seemed dim. My guest opened door and female worker told him they were. Upon entering we noticed the second door was open. We sat at the booth and informed the server that it was cold in there. She advised us to move to another area and we did and were still cold. I asked if the door could be closed and she gave me a blank stare so we left. Not in the mood to patronize businesses that don't give a blank about their customers.

Our table for 4 was seated immediately at 11 am on Saturday. We didn't need our full party present to be seated. Kanela had their windows open today. Our seat near the windows gave our table a beautiful breeze and scenery to watch as we ate. My avocado toast was delicious. Highly recommend! Avocado spread on the vegan bread topped with sliced avocados. Avocados on avocados! The red pepper flakes on top and the red onion mixed in with the spread gave the dish a small kick. The salad it came with was a little sad with wilted greens. The vinegary dressing was good though. There was also a choice of fruit or herbed potatoes. Some downsides that happened while I was there.. the packaged cream was spoiled. When mixed in with the coffee, the cream floated to the top. A blueberry in my fruit side had apparent mold on it. Our server was very responsive. She took away the plate of cream and returned with new coffee and fresh cream. She offered a container of fruit to go since we were done with our meal. The server also offered to-go cups for coffee as well. Regardless, I would still come back again. I've been here a few times before and always enjoyed their food. I'll probably just opt for the potatoes next time.

This place is the perfect start for the day regardless of time. I'm going to take the time to apologize for the pictures, clearly could not wait! We got the goat cheese omelette, not sure what they added to the goat cheese but it's was out of this world. Chicken avocado blt sandwich was sooooo good. My brother in law got the fried chicken with waffles and it was soooooooo good. We also got a stack of pancakes to share. Shoutout to Kristine P for being a phenomenal server. Con: street parking Pro: everything else is worth it

Biscuits & Gravy

We tried Kanela in Andersonville. I ordered Biscuits & Gravy, what I liked about it were the home fry potatoes and the homemade sausage patty, I didn't care for the thick gravy, and it had way too much pepper too. My friend ordered their California Benedict she said her egg was a little undercooked but the fruit cup was a big hit and a nice portion to boot. The bathrooms are upstairs and to the back by the kitchen where the music was very loud, unlike the music in the restaurant part. I would go back again but will order something different.

This is one of my favorite brunch spots. The prices are pretty standard, and the vibe is nice. It can be really hard to get a table for brunch on weekends, but the wait here has been pretty short every time I've come. I love their breakfast burrito, and I order it every time. I also really enjoy getting the mimosa pitcher, which is perfect for a group of 3 or 4, and a great deal. This is a perfect spot to go with friends!

I visited Kanela Breakfast Club initially when they had their Lakeview location. I loved the vibe of it and wanted to check out the Andersonville location. Kanela has a cute little outdoor seating space. The outdoor space isn't large so it could accommodate a few double party groups. The inside is nicely laid out to utilize as much space as possible. They can easily accommodate multiple four party groups but it's not a place to visit with a large group. The staff at the restaurant were nice. I visited within the first hour of them opening so we were able to easily get a seat with no issues. The inside of the restaurant was halfway full. Kanela may be in competition for the worst bacon I've ever experienced. I could've sliced bread with the bacon due to it being so hard and dry. The burrito I ordered was just okay. The size of the burrito and potatoes was big enough for me to have two meals but I wouldn't recommend the burrito. I was honestly surprised by the low quality of food in comparison to the cost of the food. I understand that the cost aligns with the area but the quality doesn't align with some of the smaller mom and pop restaurants in the area. I think Kanela may be one of those aesthetic places that will get you likes on social media but not a return customer. I don't see myself visiting Kanela again even if I had friends in the area that wanted to check it out.

Monkey Bread
Alex N.

The problem with this hip American Breakfast / brunch restaurant is that the presentation looks really good but the actual taste falls far short. Food: Does great with presentation... but not so well on taste Monkey bread - 3.5/5 - looks interesting but tastes flat Crab cake eggs benedict - 2.5/5 - NOT jumbo lump, it's all minced/grounded up California eggs benedict - 2.5/5 - very bland and even the muffin didn't taste good Chilaquiles (verdes) - 3/5 - green sauce is too sour; imbalance of crispy to soggy (Strongly prefer the crispy pieces); finally it didn't come with traditional Mexican rice nor beans Red velvet French toast - 4/5 - very good, especially with more fruits; quite sweet already so don't pour the honey on the side until you taste the toast first Lemon blueberry pancakes - 2.5/5 - not fresh blueberries! Dried wrinkled up in blueberry sauce Ambience: Pretty and modern clean decor Service: Fast, friendly

We were looking for a nice, sit-down cafe and there are a decent number of tables but almost all of them were occupied so seating was limited and it was hard to really settle in comfortably. The drinks were fine (although a bit pricey) and they did take a while to come out (it was crowded but most of the people already had their drinks). There was also a slight mix up where one of the drinks was missed which was eventually resolved, but again, added to the overall wait and slightly disorganized feel of the visit. Nothing was really bad, but nothing stood out either. It just felt a bit overwhelmed by the volume of people compared to the space and speed of service. Decent drinks and nice decor but long wait times and limited seating made the experience less enjoyable than it could've been.

We were lucky to grab the last small round table for two.  The pastry case was only 40% stocked at this point. We were happy that they still had our favorites -- 2 almond croissants ($14 for 2) and a cappuccino ($5 + $0.50 Oat Milk) to go.  The cashier was very friendly, patient, and welcoming. The decor of the store is modern and charming.  There were a variety of seating options, and many customers were working on their laptops while enjoying their drinks, giving the café a cozy yet lively atmosphere. The bookstore occupies about half of the space and features an impressive collection of books focused on drama and theatre.  If you are interested in theatre, this thoughtfully curated bookstore is for you. We noticed a sign indicating that The Understudy partners with Defloured Bakery, which also partners with a long list of businesses, including another coffee shop in the neighborhood that we frequent a lot. We have enjoyed almond croissants and other baked goods at that café very often, they were just as delicious and large, since they were sourced from the same bakery. However, The Understudy charged $7 for an almond croissant, while the other café charged only $4.50 for the exact same pastry. That's a significant price difference. The cappuccino was another slight disappointment. It was only lukewarm rather than hot, although I am not sure whether the oat milk substitution may have affected the temperature. Judging by how popular The Understudy was during our visit, it's clear that many people appreciate its ambiance, curated bookstore, and friendly service. If those qualities are important to you, you may find the higher prices well worth it.

Previous review: I really enjoy their beverages and I keep coming back. That being said, there is almost no price transparency. The only prices they have on their menu are for the THC additions. I've mentioned this to the owner twice (he's a cool guy) but he has always sort of shrugged it off. It bothers me every time I'm in. Sometimes my latte with oat milk comes out different prices. Price transparency is so important for consistency . Not including the prices is a bit elitist, especially when the average drink is $6-$8. You should want folks to come in and comfortably order what they can afford. I hope this suggestion is taken into consideration. The drinks are good and like I said, I keep coming back but this has been a sticking point for me for a year plus.
