I enjoyed myself very much so. The restaurant was great and the service although at times somewhat overwhelmed the staff and management came around to ask my family and self if we were okay. The food was fresh and excellent. The only flaw was that extra orders kept being sent out to my table and at time it became difficult to get my waitress attention because she was multitasking. A few friends of mine and myself stopped coming here last year because of the brown containers that made your food taste like cardboard and the girl at the cash register with an attitude. When I first walked in the music was loud. It felt like I was walking into a club not a restaurant. We ordered the Lil Nino because we wanted to sample a little bit of everything and she told us it was enough to share. We ordered our food to dine in and she packed it up to go. I saw their truck parked in the city, googled the store, and finally got around to trying it out. I got the Crab Cake Platter, and added a side of Mac & Cheese and Cole Slaw. The corn on the cob and Mac & Cheese was seasoned generously and had a nice taste, but the shrimp seemed to be missing a little bit. A Few of us went to Crab Boss in Brandywine MD today at 1:28 pm. After waiting for almost an hour, finally around 2:20 pm, they began to bring out our first order. At approximately 3:00pm , I asked for a refund because my order still wasn't ready. The young lady told me that she would give me my refund and my food. The cook became upset and asked, "who do that?" I told him, "this young lady", then he let me know that my food was ready. I said "ok, I will take my order." After receiving my order, I checked my bag and found out that my order was incorrect. At this time, I was very upset and just wanted my refund. It took them forever. *sigh* I was in Brandywine and decided to stop in again for another try. The order system is WAY better, now there is order and the lines move quickly. The food is still good! I will be frank, but these portions are absolutely obscene for the prices they charge. I paid $16 for literally 10 shrimp, one half of a white potato, with one small piece of sausage. Don't even bother getting the half combos as an accompaniment because they're not worth it. I'm really fine with getting 10 shrimp, but one half of a potato and the little sausage piece? Come on, as they are a side you should at least get a whole potato and two pieces of sausage--if you were to order them separately it's like $2-3 FOR ONE PIECE OF EACH. The poboy was a good size with fries on the side, surely worth the price. The crab fries...when I came last they used to serve the fries in a whole box, they have since switched and serve it in a half box for the same price. There's a lot of cutting corners and deduction of value for the customer. All in all, I get it. It's a small local business. Let me start out by saying- I'm a huge seafood fan. I'm from NYC not too far from city island which I swear by as the world's best seafood. I've wanted to try Crab Boss for a while. I've been following them on Facebook and it is so visually appealing. Today, I tested weather or not my taste buds would agree with my eyes and they did! I had the lil' boss. It comes with a lobster tail, jumbo shrimp, a Cajun egg, Cajun potato, and a cluster of crab legs for about $35. Very good for the price and everything was seasoned really well. Crab Boss has a secret sauce. I'm not sure what's in it looks like it's made up of butter and some other seasonings, either way it's very good. I arrived at 6:30, he was already there with a nice line and passing out the goods. Everyone was good (not out of control like The Walking Dead trying to get seafood!), with his requirement of exact change, the line moves quickly and smoothly. Handed over the money, you're handed a plate! I had to shake the man's hand for such great marketing and product. Now on to the food---- Amazing seafood expectations: 5 STARS Platter full of amazing, robust seafood... legs, shrimp, egg, potato, sausage .. is a crab cake in there? Hot, steamy seafood Mind blowing seafood.. I'll have a seafoodgasm! What I got: 3.75-4 STARS A full combo-- which is a smaller platter size.. in between a half styrofoam box and what you'd get at let's say the carryout, panda express, the teriyaki joint.. the standard, but large size Styrofoam plate. This one falls between those. You get small legs (they have to fit in the box some how), large shrimp that's not deveined (I only eat deveined shrimp), egg, potato, sausage, small corn on the cob, NO crab cake. Everything was seasoned well and the shrimp would have been better seasoned if they were deveined! It's prepackaged and prepared ahead of time for the rush, so it's lukewarm. The sauce isn't all over the food like in the pics. It's was initially I suppose, but it melted off and it's all at the bottom. I found out half way through the plate. Wasn't a problem, just didn't expect it. I'm particular about my corn.. I don't need it super fresh, cutting my gums, but I don't like soft, mushy cobs that were frozen. This corn had the appearance that it would be soft and mushy from being frozen and processed, but it was pretty good. Overall, it's good, really good. After hearing so many of the positive reviews about this business, I was excited to try it since there is not enough options for good places locally. We always have to travel outside of our local area for great food that's not fast fast food. My husband and I looked at the reviews on Yelp, took a look at the pictures for the food items off of the menu and went there. Here is a breakdown of the visit: 1. There was no signage for parking for the restaurant. Parking in front of the building was full so we were not sure if we could park across the street in what appeared to be a second parking lot for the restaurant. Not sure if it was officially, but we ask the people working in the restaurant and they said that we could park there. 2. Even though they market this is a restaurant that you can eat in, you really can't. There were only a few tables available because most were taken by people waiting on their food orders. That was a bit of a turn off because we had decided before we visited that we would go there and sit down and have a meal but that was not an option because of the number of people already there. It was packed and there was quite a wait but that was to be expected so we were fine. 2. We finally got to the register to place our orders but there were a few things that they sold that were not on the main menu so that was a little confusing. I ended up getting a fried lobster tail and the crab cake platter. My husband got the shrimp platter. Again, we got our food to go because there were way too many people inside taking up tables and also it was way too hot. 3. THE FRIED LOBSTER TAIL WAS EVERYTHING! It was very well seasoned and fried to a perfect crisp. The fried lobster was AMAZING and the best thing I had (from what we ordered). Unfortunately I did not have the same feeling about the crab cake platter nor did my husband have the same feeling about the shrimp platter. The two platters were okay but for the price of what we paid our food came to approximately $62 and I don't feel like it was worth the cost of the meal. Even though the crab cake was not filled with fillers, I did not care for the way it was seasoned. It tasted like there was just way too much Old Bay or whatever seasoning they use on the crab cakes. The shrimp were a good size but again it was just okay. Maybe I was expecting too much based off of the reviews that I have read on Yelp. It's worth the hype! You have to find the truck by stalking IG WEDS-SAT & most days the truck doesn't open shop until 8pm & after. This requires patience & diligence lol. The line will be super long even if you get there an hour early. The food is pre-made not fresh to order so you will have to take it home to re-heat. When reheating the paper in the box is NOT microwaveable. The portion size is just enough but for $26.50 they could do without the boiled egg no one wants and to replace it with extra corn or potato. A non pork sausage option should also be added but as a note I just traded hubby his corn for the sausage and all was right in the world :) The sauce is BOMB!!!!! It was plentiful and delicious and made chasing him around PG county for months worthwhile! The crab legs and shrimp were cooked perfectly even after being reheated in the oven and tasted very fresh and not previously frozen. In summary, be prepared to wait in line... But once he arrives the line moves super quickly. He may arrive to his posted destination late... IMHO 10 minutes tardiness was worth the wait for the platter and not a huge deal. This is a true gem that with minimal tweeking a couple things would be amazing but CrabBoss definitely did not disappoint! Check them out if they're in your area. He let us know the Brandywine store front would be opening in the next month or so but that the trucks would still be popping up around town after that. Brandywine is like traveling to west Egypt for me so I was excited to hear that. Now on to the main event.... That Yummmo platter. It was even better than the last one I had. There's no more foil lining so we could pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds and dig in. There was more sauce for basting and dipping which was a plus. The seafood was all cooked perfectly and still very fresh. Once again I traded the sausage and egg for my husband's corn and this time I was stuffed like a tick by the end my meal. I love that buttery seasoned corn on the cob. Perhaps my shrimp and potato were bigger this time but the platter seemed distinctively more filling. His sauce is still the bomb. Some ppl have said "it's just seasoned butter, I could make that at home." You're right.... You could make burgers at home but you go to Red Robin right? You could make Fettuccini Alfredo at home but you go to Olive Garden right?.... And do you complain afterward that you could make French fries or salad at home LOL. I make my own butter sauce for seafood at home and it's the bomb too. I like the Crab Boss because his is different and consistently delicious and sometimes I want something different and the convenience of not having to make it at home. I DIG YOU, CRAB BOSS! This mobile Florida-style, local seafood eatery makes its appearances usually in the PGC area (Laurel, Capitol Heights, etc.) from Wednesdays-Saturdays. You have to stalk them hard on their social media to see where they'll be located, and locations are posted about 2-3 hours beforehand. They usually offer 2 kinds of combos, and substitutions are not allowed. When I went, it was the 'Lil Boss' (which comes with lobster, snow crabs, jumbo gulf shrimp, Cajun sausage, Cajun corn, Cajun corn, and a Cajun hardboiled egg) and the 'Full Combo' (which is everything in the Lil Boss, but no lobster). I got their Full Combo, and it comes in a styrofoam box on top of parchment paper. The shrimp were shell-on, not deveined, but extremely large in size; the snowcrab was of one cluster and had a decent amount of meat within; the potato was of a halved Russet potato; about a 1/4-sized smoked sausage; the corn was half-sized; and, the hardboiled egg was of a whole one. The whole thing was drenched in Crab Boss's secret blend of spices, garlic, and butter sauce and of a good amount (don't forget to scoop the extra puddle that formulates at the bottom of the box, too!). I actually really enjoyed the sauce, as it was buttery, had a hint of garlic, and contained a good blend of seasoning - not spicy at all and the right amount of saltiness. The hardboiled egg was okay, and I did enjoy the smoked sausage and the perfectly-cooked skin-on potato. The shrimp was fresh, and the crab was good with a good amount of meat. I highly recommend in dipping the meats into the sauce more before eating! The corn was forgettable, as it was just not fresh and mushy. The portion is more than generous for 1 person, but can be divided up between two if you want to be nice :P Just note that these are made just hours before, but arrive in an ice box, so they are not ready-to-eat; you have to go home and reheat (it was recommended to just zap it in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds). It may be inconvenient for some, but it's nice to have that messy, finger-licking experience in the comfort of your own home and not standing outside and/or inside your car :D I was shocked that they they appeared up in Alexandria, so I was super excited! :D In addition, it's great to see that they have 3 mobiles, so the chances of getting to one semi-'closer' to you is higher. People tend to show up about 1-1.5 hours beforehand, and it is first-come, first-serve; however, people do not adhere to who 'came first,' as they usually just rush up to the parked mobile (it's a black pickup truck). The food does run out within 2 hours or less, so keep that in mind. Both cash and CCs are accepted. I'm actually a fan of Florida-style seafood, and I think you'll be, too - it is different and pretty delicious! I'm so happy that Crab Boss is close to my house. Whenever I'm craving seafood I don't have to drive to the city anymore. I always get the "half combo" and that includes 3 snow crab legs, shrimp and 2 sides. I have also tried the seafood Mac n cheese and boss fries. Literally everything is good! read more
