This iconic place is what eating "down the shore" means. It's a small place but it packs a bigger culinary punch than any (blah!) Red Lobster. If you want ambiance, then head into AC. But if it's excellent food, fast service and a down-home, friendly atmosphere you are looking for, then Crabby's is well-worth the drive no matter where you're coming from! So this place is only a 1/2 hour from me. Ive always heard it was good but I have a weird quirk that if somewhere isnt really open and inviting I just dont go. Its a little building with little windows in the woods on rt50. Just wasnt feeling it. My intuition is usually right. This time it was not at all. You walk in and it looks like a little shore crab shack. Picnic tables and just a cool vibe. 5 of us got the All You Can Eat Snows and Shrimp. OMG. Amazing. This old crab shack & bar is an iconic eatery on the mainland near the famous island shore resorts of the South Jersey Shore. Situated outside picturesque May's Landing on the edge of the Pine Barrens, Crabby's never has to worry about being difficult to find. It's reputation means you will def go out of your way to find it ... and when you do hopefully won't have too long a wait for a table. Crabs are the name of the game here - all types from local to more distant crabs flown in. But fish, clams, oysters, and shrimp are also on the menu. Of course this being the Philly/South Jersey shore area, we crack open the crabs ourselves and search for crabmeat everywhere. There are no set rules on how to do this but I could give one tips on how to do it better and what is best not to eat. I enjoyed recently a crab/shrimp/clam combo with a basket of fries. The seafood was excellent and well worth all of my efforts. With the friendly service added in, I know why by the time I left there was a line outside the door - on a Tuesday night in September. Crabby's is a seasonal eatery so you can only partake of the tasty offerings here in the warmer months. p.s. Don't forget to tape some money to the ceiling. I was on a trip to mays landing and I was sooo hungry. So me and my grandparents stopped here and it may look like a really bad run down diner, but I had there crab clusters and I gotta tell you.. THEY WERE THE BEST CRABS EVER! When i put that into my mouth, I couldn't believe what I had tasted. It was juicy, tender, and overall very tasty and I loved them so much I ordered 5 servings. If you have the patience of a saint and you love seafood, this is your type of place, otherwise take a Xanax and get ready to kill your frustrations while waiting for your dinner and seeing other dinners get served twice before you. I came here on a night hungry and ready to eat. The wait time was about 1hr30mins - not terrible for the all you can eat crab legs. However, once we got seated, it took them more than an hour for us to eat at all (with the exception of a couple plates for someone in our table). The infuriating part is that you saw other tables getting double plates while we waited in anticipation to eat. Ultimately, the staff was nice, they all had friendly demeanors (with the exception of an unfriendly bartender), but the operations run poorly. Kind of an iconic place down the Shore (although it's a good 25 minutes from the resort towns or so). The quality of the crab is quite good, with a variety of different types (I had half size combination platter for $28 and partner had 1.5 lbs of snow crab legs for $37). He crab soup was quite good but rather on the creamy side, but seafood gumbo was easily good enough to be served in New Orleans! Serving staff are not trained that well to deal with customer requests, which can lead to confusion and mixed up orders at times. Larry is quite efficient as a bartender and is always running around to deal with requests (very good at making the drinks too). Important to be a regular here to get the best service though. read more

Well I use to love this place. Early this summer I had a terrible experienced over priced and terrible food. I decided to give it another change chance During peak season, once again I was disappointed to say the least. If ever wandering through mays landing one day you might almost pass this little hole in the wall seafood joint. Don't let the looks fool you- the food here is great and worth bragging about. They also have a full bar. Prices can be a little high so just be prepared to spend over $100 if you have someone joining you. Monday - Thursday 5 to 8pm and Sunday 2-6pm all you can eat blue claw crabs $40/person. Comes with choice of fries or pasta. Warning: Maryland style! Only complaint.. the staff. RUDE service! Inexcusably RUDE service!! When we walked into Crabby's for dinner last evening, the bartender saw us, did not acknowledge us, and no hostess or server was anywhere in the room. The place has a casual enough vibe to it, so we just seated ourselves at a small table. About 5 minutes later, one of the servers (NOT the person who eventually was our server, as it turned out) came over to us and said "You should not have seated yourselves. The next time you come here, you should wait to be seated." I responded with "Nobody was here to seat us, and the bartender did not tell us to wait to be seated. We can move elsewhere if you want. So where would you like us to sit instead?" Her response: "Since you're here already, you can just stay here. But next time, don't sit yourselves and wait for someone to seat you." Trust me, there will NOT be a next time for us at Crabby's. The food is edible but not what I would describe as good. I ordered broiled flounder with crab imperial, and my partner got the filet imperial. Mine was cooked OK but shockingly bland for fresh crab meat. His was seriously overcooked and comparably bland. The menu contains nothing by way of vegetables or salads, and most entrees come with fries. Also worth noting is that Crabby's is expensive, particularly for the quality of the meals. We had no appetizers, no alcohol, and no desserts, and our meal came to about $75. Nothing about this place merits that kind of pricing. Do yourself a favor and find a Red Lobster and eat there instead. The food is lower-priced and MUCH higher in quality. And you'd easily have better, friendlier, less rude service. read more

Hungover. Defeated by Atlantic City. Hungry. We were staying at a friend's in May's Landing and found this seafood joint after much stirring in the morning and possibly going after the hair of the dog. The drive takes us out in some back road and once we walked in, patrons and staff just turn around and stare us down. Their eyes speak, "You all aren't from around here." Our group just shuffles in and seats ourselves in a corner table and huddle over a menu. Waitress comes over. She's been here all her life it seems. She's not smiling. "What can I get you?" she says in what seemed to be a rather surly voice. I look up first and contemplate my words. ....Crab cake sandwich and two steamed, dirty blue crabs... She retorts, and now more upbeat, "Medium or large?" I get the medium. Now for some reason we started to order one by one and it's not so weird anymore. As it turns out, most of us were probably visibly drunk (again) by noon and so they are turned around and gawked at us weirdos. That was my realization. This is actually a friendly and legit crab joint. My crab cake was meaty, although it wasn't lump meat and it was deep fried (pan seared is best). Whatever. The two steamed guys were banging. I asked for medium and what I got were friggin' behemoths. I couldn't fathom what the hell size a large would be. Succulent and fresh. Covered in what appears to be JO brand seasoning (far superior to Old Bay for crab eatin'). Came here on a Thursday. It sucks that it opens so late but honestly it was worth the wait. We got here at 4pm when the place opened. The special of the day was snow crab and shrimp. Called ahead to try for a reservation for 6 people--no reservations taken. Went there for the blue claw crabs but they never mentioned on the phone that they had none. We arrived to get the bad news and had to reconsider our order. Tried the raw clams--tasteless. Tried the ray oysters--also tasteless. Ordered the sautéed soft shells- 36$ for two small watery crabs. Others also complained of their food. The scampi sauce was over-garciked and inedible. The kitchen service was equally bad--waited over an hour for the entrees. The ambiance is that of a dive bar--picnic bench seats, dirty toilets and at least one regular smoking at their table. To top it off it was badly overpriced. $$287 for six people, including two kids, with one having a hamburger and lemonade. read more

The staff make a big deal about using strong scented sanitizer on the tables, but the rest of the place was filthy. Really filthy When we finally ordered, it took an hour for our food to be delivered. The place wasn't even overly busy. I had the soft shell crab platter. The 2 crabs were greasy and old oil tasting and had no flavor. The three who ordered the crab imperial said that it was dry and flavorless. I tasted my husband's and it was not good. Have been here before and love the food. It's a little pricey in my opinion, but the food is good when they have it! Earlier this evening I was there and was told they were out of garlic crabs... disappointing but, because we sat for about 20 min without our order being taken, I can't help but wonder if they may have had some if were were able to place our order when we sat down. Instead we were told four times, "I'll be back in a minute" ...which turned into 20 min. When finally allowed to place an order, my girlfriend chose crab imperial instead. It took almost another 20 min for that to come out, and it was less than satisfactory. She wanted to express displeasure but, the server didn't come back to the table until it was time to ask if She wanted a box. She said She took two bites and didn't like it, would she be able to get something else, and was told we would be charged for it regardless. Well, I spoke to the bartender about it, who went in the back and spoke to the server.., who I was told was also the manager. We live locally, and come to Crabbys once a summer for the all you can eat crabs - they're on the expensive side (about $50) but worth it! The restaurant is like a cozy dive bar, and we usually have a great time - the drinks are good and the food is too. Last night, however we had HORRIBLE service - I've worked in the food service industry both front and back of the house, so it pains me to write a review about service, however we were so disappointed. Our server greeted us with "Hi welcome to Crabbys. I need a minute". We gave her the benefit of the doubt thinking maybe she's really busy. When she came back she took our drink orders then came back and said "The bar's backed up, it'll be a few minutes" and took our food order. Three of us received our drinks a few minutes later and then we watched her other two tables get their Bloody Mary's as my mom waited for hers for over 10 minutes. We finally flagged our server down and she said "yup" and came back with the drink. That was probably the last time we saw her until the end of the meal - she never checked on us, never asked if we needed anything and it seemed that she was actually avoiding our table when my plate of crab was empty and ready for another round. Thankfully, the busser was amazing and she checked on us, ordered more food and cleared our table a few times when needed. Kate - you were wonderful! At the end of the meal I put my crab in a to go bag, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to bring it home. Our server all of a sudden had eyes like a hawk and swiftly came over and rudely told me "You can't bring those home" and watched closely as I pulled them out -- this was the most attention I received all night! I started cracking the crab and finishing it and was told (again) that "There are cameras watching, and they can see what you're doing". Well great, maybe they caught the terrible service on camera as well! All in all, Crabbys is a nice, casual place to go for a drink and some crab. Came here on the 4th of July, also a Tuesday... better known as All You Can Eat Crab Leg night! So... I can only review the AYCE service and quality. For a holiday, AYCE setting, I came in not expecting much. However, I was really, really surprised! They do their job well!! They know what they're good at, and they do it well. Various nights offer various AYCE options, so know when you want to go. When you get seated, the table is equipped with brown paper, a pail, and a roll of paper towels. You know, then, that it's about to get serious! You'll likely get a pitcher of water for the table, but can order other drinks as well. The wait staff hustles! They work hard and take good care of you. For the AYCE crab legs, the first batch came out with about 3 to 4 clusters per person, and a side of fries or pasta. The fries were good! I wanted to resist them to save room for the good stuff, but they looked so crispy and well seasoned that they got me. (But I only ate half of them!) Each round of legs comes with drawn butter -- i'd suggest squeezing in some lemon juice. We got started right away, and our waitress came around and tied some bibs on for us, so we didn't have to stop. Like I mentioned, they do their job quite well. They've got all the tools you could ever need... and more! And if you don't see it, ask! As for the crab legs, they came out piping hot, nicely seasoned (coulda used a little more Old Bay type seasoning), but not waterlogged and easy to get to the meat. So glad we found this little off the beaten path place! It seems to ALWAYS be busy but there is a good reason for it! The all you can eat is a great deal if you come hungry. The servers are great about keeping the food coming and the crab is cooked great but could just use some more seasoning. I tried a lobster pot one day (clams,mussels,shrimp) which was a great deal but again just needs some seasoning to kick it up a notch! We did go on a night that it was 115° out and the restaurant was hotter then it was outside I'm not sure if their air just doesn't work well or if it was broken so just be careful about going on a hot day! read more

Arrived to a packed parking lot for our 1st time here. Although the lot was packed, we were greeted right away and immediately seated. Great vibe- very shore themed. I've been to Crabby's about three or four times and I really want to like it. I like the authentic crab house feel. I also like the wait staff. I don't plan to return. Here's why I give it a low rating. 1) prices are very high. I eat mussels two or three times a month and usually pay $10 to $14 for a dish with linguini and diablo sauce. Here they are $17.99. Most crab dishes are $25 to $35. Soup starts at about $5 a cup and $8 for a bowl. 2) quality isn't there. I've had the he crab soup a couple of times. It's very heavy but tastes bland for my taste. On the positive side for the $8 there was a fair amount of crab it it. I'd say it's a plain white sauce with cream and crab. It's not bad it's just not good. And a bowl is definitely too much. Tonight I had steamed mussels as my main dish. The look, taste, texture and temperature were all negative. They looked dried out like they had been on the counter for hours. The restaurant wasn't that busy and they brought them out fairly quickly so they should have been hot. They were not. Some were a little warm like just above room temperature a few were cold. Cooler than refrigerator temp but not still frozen. Finally the dishes don't come with any sides, like coleslaw or a side salad other than an unappetizing sliced plain white bread. I keep thinking next time it will be better if I try something else but just seems to get worse. read more
