Detouring north and around the Pigeon River Gorge on the NC/TN line due to traffic, this was a great stop for the night. An extra hour or so to avoid at least an hour of sitting in single lane stop and go traffic. But we're here now and that's good. Not too late for dinner, this was great and friendly service. Everything we expect from this wonderful chain restaurant. Mrs. K. chose the Rainbow Trout which she said was delicious. Served hot, the portions of sides could have been bigger but still tasty. Fried apples and mashed potatoes, which were definitely real potatoes and not packet. I chose the meatloaf and it sucked up a nice bit of ketchup with it and a double portion of steamed broccoli. Good, fresh hot. After dinner, we headed out to the RV and locked up for the night. Yes, this Cracker Barrel tolerates the RV lifestyle by letting us use their parking lot over night with the kind but unspoken request that if you're having a meal, you should have it with them. My last review was 4 star it has gone down hill to a 2 star. We came for a quick super on Friday at 410 pm we were allowed to go table at 445. The parking lot empty and dinning room may have had 4 table with guests. They took my name for reservations like it was something fancy. Absolutely horrible food. Burned corn muffins, dry, overcooked meatloaf, flavorless Cole slaw. I'm 72 and this is the first time in my life I sent my food back to the kitchen. Our waitress was amazing. She was very attentive and seemed embarrassed by the appearance of my dinner. She didn't hesitate to offer to me the chance to order something else. We won't be back. Cracker Barrel used to be our favorite restaurant, it was like eating at grandmas house. in the last 10 or so years they have changed for the worst. The gravy and biscuits are horrible. First...I LOVE Cracker Barrel. My children love Cracker Barrel. But something has changed. The quality is gone. My scrambled eggs were actually more like a folded up "egg sheet", biscuits/cornbread were so hard they could be used as weapons. Super close (walking distance) to the Quality Inn. Great service. Food was good and consistent with expectations of Cracker Barrel locations. Takeaway is packaged really nicely. This was the child's request for dinner, and the confetti pancakes eaten in the motel room after swimming in the pool hit the family travel novelty spot. First, my normal go to restaurant. Not anymore, just wanted a feel good meal of chicken and dumplings but received mush with some water added. Just awful food, our waiter was courteous and did what he could, however. Can't say that about lady that checked us out, didn't ask about our meal and when we mentioned, just said yeah we have had a lot of complaints. Not, we are sorry, or any concern at all. It was obvious the kitchen knew but still tried to serve. Just toss the bad batch and tell customers you are out. What has happened to the CB we know and love, please get it back for us! read more

My sister and I visited the Johnson City location a few Sundays ago and were extremely disappointed. we were sat at two top table and handed 2 menus. The menus are so old that they were tearing apart at the seams. They also gave us a dinner menu and a breakfast menu at dinner time. When I went up to the front, I was told they did that because they didn't have dinner menus to go around. The restaurant was not busy so they could've given us the option. My food came out and my mashed potatoes and gravy were cold and my hamburger steak was well done when I asked for medium rare. But That's not even the worst part. Where we were sat, the air conditioning must've been leaking and water was dripping on my head. I looked around and I could see puddles of water on the floor as well. I got up to complain and they moved us one table over. The person told us they were well aware of the issue, yet they sat us there anyway. WTH? I believe our waiter went to speak to the manager, at least I think it was the manager, and she stood over by the kitchen, talking and staring up at the ceiling where it was leaking. She never came to my table to apologize nor did she have anybody clean up the puddles of water or put up a sign saying wet area. Anyone could've slipped that water and fallen. Here's the kicker. While sitting at the new table, it started dripping on me again. C'mon Cracker Barrel get your shit together and order some new menus, have better quality control over your food being brought out and for God sake fix the leaks that are in your ceiling or air conditioning and your managers to not ignore that could be potentially dangerous. Not sure I'll ever be back to a Cracker Barrel unless it's to go shopping in the store. PS. Charlie was our server and he was great. As is the case with most people who were raised in the south, I've been coming to Cracker Barrel for my entire life. Cracker Barrel is Grandmas house away from Grandmas house. Southern home cookin the way it oughta be. When I went in for breakfast this morning with my daughters, I wasn't in Grandmas House anymore. I was in the shell of my childhood. The decorations were the same, the customer service was still great, but the atmosphere was miserable and the food a disgrace. I'll start with the beverages. I ordered a black coffee, same as always, but after one sip, I requested a Diet Coke instead. The Orange Juice my daughter ordered was bitter. Luckily, the water was good. One of my daughters ordered cereal. The other ordered Chocolate Chip Pancakes. Once upon a time, her pancakes would have come with some scrambled eggs, but...ya know. I ordered 2 eggs over medium, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and tomato slices. What I got was 2 eggs over easy, 2 rubber pucks, stale overcooked biscuits, gravy from a bag, and tasteless tomatoes. The best tasting item on the table was my daughter's chocolate chip pancakes. Pancake mix is easily shipped from the factory and mixed on site so no surprise they were good. And they had chocolate chips so thats cheating. Ive never had a complaint about the food at Cracker Barrel before. That ex Taco Bell CEO needs to go back to Taco Bell. I am no CEO and I dont run a business, but I'll give them some free advice. Take the money you were going to spend on white washing all of your restaurants and spend it on making the food even better than it was before. If I want fast food, I'll go to a fast food restaurant. I'm not sure if Cracker Barrel has changed its recipes or if its management staff is not doing their jobs, but I was disappointed during my last visit to this Cracker Barrel. I ordered the Sirloin Steak with double Green Beans. The steak was mealy and not cooked to my order (I ordered med-rare, and it came out med-well). I remember the green beans having bits of bacon in them... The ones I was served were greasy and overcooked (mushy) without any bacon bits. Went around 3 pm. Restaurant was not very busy. "Hostess" doesn't even look at us when she asks how many and NAME?. No personality whatsoever! After about a 10 minute wait, she was inconvenienced again to have to take us to a table. This Cracker Barrel has really gone downhill in the last couple of years. Prices have practically doubled while portions have been reduced to almost half of what they used to be. My fiance ordered the 6 piece chicken tenders with mac n cheese and fries. On his plate for which they charged around $13, was 5 tenders, about 2 tablespoons of mac n cheese and maybe 10 french fries. I thought we were part of a joke someone was playing. Moved here from California and heard numerous people rave about Cracker Barrel. We tried it several times and I must say it is definitely way overrated. NOTHING like what their menu portrays. First off our hostess was very rude. Just grabbed our things and threw them on the table and said "here ya go" and bumped into me walking by like she hated her job. Our waitress was not consistent with checking on us and it wasn't just us she had done that to. I had seen SEVERAL of her tables go without a refill on drinks just as I had for almost the entire meal. She never come and checked on us regularly. We had several things missing from our order that was mentioned when we could flag her down when she was finally paying attention but she never returned with the missing items. And again, it wasn't just our table she had done that with. I over heard other tables that she was serving mentioning it as well. This was by far the worst service I have ever had from ANY establishment and I will NOT be returning and I advise against anyone else to go dine here unless you're into rude and little to no service with missing items. read more

When it comes to cheap, wholesome, country style eating, I am an unashamed fan of Cracker barrel. This store in Johnson City is the equal of any I have eaten at. The rooms are warm and cosy, the decor is always nostalgic, in the winter, the fireplace is well stoked with burning logs, the service is pleasant and the food is always good, in a homely sort of way. My wife had cat fish, I had pot roast and we would have had their no-added-sugar apple pie (it's a favorite for us) but we were too full from the biscuits and corn bread and the wonderful sides of ham and beans and greens. I note this restaurant has some crappy reviews. Perhaps we were lucky; perhaps the other reviewers were unlucky.
