This place is definitely a throwback, and I mean that in the best way possible. Centrally located in downtown Wakefield, this former diner( at least it seems like it is) is a treat! A combo ice cream/ candy/drink shop (they make tea, coffee, and espresso), there is something for everyone here. All of their ice cream is homemade (impressive when you realize how many flavors they have), and delicious. They serve soft serve, yourget, and ice cream, with all the toppings you could think of and several varieties of cones. They have a selection a candy as well. They had candy I have not seen in years, which is awesome! You can elect to sit at either the bar or in one of the booths. Cravings gets high points on nostalgic decor and for rich, creamy, ice cream. The flavors range from traditional to "Ooh, I need to try that." Cost is a bit above average, so get that second scoop for a better deal. My first scoop was my "test" flavor, butter pecan - nice texture, but more as I tend to prefer a more buttery than butterscotchy flavor, good but not my favorite. I was much more satisfied with the dutch chocolate, which was, to me, just right. There was an even darker chocolate selection too, but I didn't sample that. Some of the other flavors I did sample were more complicated flavors such as bananas foster. These were again good, but just a tad too sweet for me. But despite sounding a bit picky here, I really did enjoy the ice cream a lot. I was walking to Main Street for a Cravings ice cream. It wasn't as good as I remember it to be. Just like everyone else says, I love the old school atmosphere. The flavor selection isn't that original. One of the best thing's about Cravings is that the soft serve is very creamy. It will melt easily, but I like having a nice soft and creamy ice cream once and a while. The ice cream is good, but a lot of the flavors seem to taste the same. It doesn't have that feeling you get from having Richardson's ice cream. What I mean is that the ice cream here doesn't taste as fresh. I've passed by this location so many times and it's never been the right time to stop in until last night. Craving (ha) something sweet after a so so meal nearby we wandered in around 7:30. The place was very busy. I love the set up with the old timey candy and the counter area. Be prepared to be blown away by their soft serve selection. OMG. Must be 50 flavors on there. I've never seen so many. They have interesting hard ice cream flavors too with some clever names but I couldn't resist trying my go to hard serve flavor pineapple orange in soft serve form. It was so so so good! The portion was huge. I got it in a regular (small) cup and it was extended out in a swirl like an ice cream cone! I can't imagine how huge a large is. The flavor was perfect. They have so many flavors but first I have to return and get that one again. Heaven. Prices were great on the ice cream and other items like candy and coffee. Staff was super friendly and even though there was a line it moved fast. They get one star because the ice cream was cold. My sister and I stopped in for a cone each after our nail appointment. The reason they lost four stars is as follows 1. I ordered my small cone and asked for the crunch topping. The kid behind the counter then after staring at me for 10 seconds asked me if I wanted the crunch topping or sprinkles. At this point I just assumed he didn't hear me. My sister then orders her small cone of mint chocolate chip. 2. He then hands me my ice cream in a cup. I'm reasonable I don't want to be rude (even though he clearly was headed in that direction) so I smile and say oh that was supposed to be a cone. He again stares at me and says nothing so I tell him I'm going to be driving, I cant eat out of a cup with a spoon. He goes oh sorry and then just rings me up! He ignored me! 3. So again not wanting to cause a scene I accept it and wait for him to ring me up. He says 16.00 for the 2 cones. My sister did get an upgrade on her cone so I assumed incorrectly (my fault) that it was correct. I then added in my head and alerted him that seemed high. He had rung my card and gives me a look that clearly states he is annoyed with me. But he then reads off the order in detail before realizing that he was in fact wrong and run me up for 3 cones. So instead of correcting the transaction he hands me cash. 4. So after ignoring my request, overcharging me and overall just clearly making it known he wasn't interested in serving customers my sister takes a bite of her mint chocolate chip cone and discovers it's actually just chocolate chip. There were people in the store which you would think would be good for business but your business can't thrive when you have lazy insulting employees. We won't be back. read more

Oh boy, do I love ice-cream. And this ice-cream is pretty darn delicious. I grabbed a chocolate fudge brownie extra thick frappe and I drank it like water. It was so chocolatey and thick I couldn't believe it. My favorite part was that they had 2 sizes for a frappe, a regular and a large. Usually I can never finish a frappe and its a waste, but the regular was the perfect size! A smidgen expensive, but delicious!!!! They had so many flavors, I can't wait to be back!!! read more

It's best to stick to hard ice cream flavors that don't have any mix-ins (i.e. go for Vanilla vs. Chocolate Chip). They are VERY skimpy on their mix-ins across all flavors. I've had both the Purple Cow and White Chocolate Macadamia Nut flavors and can count on two hands the number of chips that were in the ice cream for both flavors combined. As a customer since childhood, the quality of the ice cream has gone downhill. The soft serve variety of flavors is awesome! However, only if the staff of mostly teenage kids have properly cleaned the machine from the previously mixed flavor and know what they are doing. Two stars because the prices are alright, location is good, and I have a soft spot for places from my childhood! I'd say make the drive to Richardson's or Dandelion's for quality ice cream and good service. read more

They hand mix into soft serve flavors you choose which is nice - I got banana coconut and it was real banana pieces and coconut flakes. It's not super-creamy but it was light and refreshing and tasted good. My main complaint is the interior is a dump. Old ice cream splattered on the walls, some dusty sad-looking shelves with candy. This isn't a replica of an old-time candy shop - it really is an old-time candy shop that exists (modified) to this day. The ice cream selection is beyond anything I've seen at a small neighborhood store and it's all delicious and made to order right in front of you. You can get almost 50 flavors in soft serve that they run through a machine right there to turn from regular frozen yogurt into soft serve. The ice cream itself is pretty good - there's better in the area, but it's very good and homemade. The soft serve is very creamy and rich, and better than you'll find anywhere around. They have a pretty impressive selection of special sundaes, cones, dips, candy, and other goodies. The negative is that with everything made to order, the employees never in any hurry, and with lines often out the door on a nice night, you could be waiting a long, long time to get your ice cream. Go again in the winter when it's dead and you'll have a chance to actually read the menu and try some different flavors. read more

I come here every few weeks. I usually get the Mint Chip (often with a dipped waffle cone), that my favorite. There are a lot of big chocolate chips in it which I like and I oddly like that the mint ice cream is white instead of the dyed green everywhere else has. A few times I tried the frozen yogurt and it was terrible with very little taste. I wish they just had all hard frozen yogurt instead of all the ones they mix with the machine with so little flavor. I'll stick with my (non-frozen yogurt) Mint Chip. read more

I went to cravings for the first time today (I usually visit christinas and Toscanis for ice cream) and I will definitely be coming back. The staff was so friendly and patient. They let me sample numerous unusual flavors and were willing to accommodate multiple flavors in my small cup (which was a large amount compared to jp licks). I had the bourbon banana' foster, dutch chocolate and vanilla espresso (they had 4-5 coffee ice cream flavors which was awesome for an afternoon pick me up). My friend had an Italian ice watermelon sushi - which was great. And the little kid with us loved the low fat chocolate oreo Soft serve. They had cookie cones (which I don't often see) in addition to all different types of sugar and waffle cones. They had a slew of topping options to make any topping lover happy. In addition to all of this they had a great seating arrangement, good air conditioning for the hot days, and sold old school candies - some as low as 15 cents a piece! I really enjoyed my experience, picked up a frequent flyer card, and will definitely be back again soon. read more

Cravings is a great stop for Ice Cream in Wakefield. The only drawback is they wont let you have 3 scoops on a large sunday with soft serve flavors which they have more of. Hard flavors you get 3 scoops. They have good ice cream tho and also a fudge shop and lindt chocolate shop inside! Got a medium cookie dough ice cream for my mom who had mouth surgery and could only eat soft food. I figure I'd go to cravings to get ice cream, and that based on the price a medium should be more than enough. Paid $5.25 for a "medium" ice cream that was the smallest "medium" ice cream I've seen in my life. The cookie dough ice cream barely had any cookie dough in it, per my mothers report. Not only was I disappointed but I was embarrassed at what I brought home for her when she sadly stated, "oh you only got a small ice cream for me?" This is one of my favorite ice cream shops -- it's got the old time, retro feeling of the 1970's but very clean and the ice cream is home made and really good. It's way better than Richardson's, and their dark chocolate ice cream (seasonal), which is usually only available in the Spring/Summer, is absolutely divine.
