Another San Diego favorite of mine. These guys are spot on with their fried chicken and I hope so by the name of the restaurant. Wait time is efficient due to the cook time. No hot lamps I've ever seen. I always pick up so no say on ambiance. Stop by and get your cluck on.

Affordable, juicy and hearty. Love this local joint. It's kinda like a IYKYK, mom and pop shop. The chicken is super crispy and flavorful. I really love the tenders also. It's a nice change from your genetic chicken chains. Chicken and rice is thee best combo. They have a pretty large menu, plenty of new things to try. Service is good, food is fresh and fast.

Some of my favorite fried chicken and seafood in SD! Pretty sure everything is made fresh. The chicken and catfish are super juicy and crispy. Shrimp was plump and tender. Definitely recommend their okra! Coleslaw was good too but a little too wet. Can't wait to come back!

Stopped in to get our fried chicken fix and ended up falling in love with the jumbo fried shrimp. This place is on point, the jumbo 8 shrimp combo is a must try. The shrimp are huge...make sure to get cocktail sauce and hot sauce. Pass on Mac and cheese but the mash and gravy are tasty. The fried chicken was made to order...get the hot sauce with it as well. The place has a small section to eat in but would recommend carry out.

MAKE SURE TO ORDER AHEAD.. Always a great choice. I ordered my food and was told 20 minutes, it was more like 35-40 wait.

Tried calling to place a takeout order and they didn't answer. Walked in and ordered a popcorn chicken combo which included 2 sides. I ordered mashed potatoes and fried zucchini. They weren't good. Fried zucchini had good texture but was very bland. The popcorn chicken wasn't crispy at all. Though the coating had good flavor, it was falling off. Chicken was dry. I could see if it was sitting out for a little while but it wasn't. Also waited 25 minutes for my order. All together, wasn't very good. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because the portion size was large.

    Fried chicken ala carte.

Our families go to place for fried chicken. Tonight was fantastic. We ordered to-go and everything was hot and crisp on schedule. Excellent as usual.

    The best. Dark meat.

My family has been getting fried chicken here for over a decade because they are great. Always extremely crispy, seasoned just right, and they come out piping hot with the juiciest meat. Hence, the wait time could be up to 30 minutes if you're waiting for a fresh batch. The menu is big, filled with all deep fried goodness. Their sweet potato fries are some of the best in town as they're nicely seasoned and never soggy. Seriously worth a trip no matter where you are in SD.

Does this place sell garlic noodles?

    yuh

Did this place change ownership in the past 2 years? Looking for 2020 and 2021 reviews from diners.?

My apologies for not writing a current review since we continue to visit this SD gem! It's still in the same owner's hands (see other answer) and the quality remains consistently fantastic!

Does anyone know if this place is open during Covid-19 restrictions?

It's open for take out and delivery on app like Postmate.

    Does Huy still work here?!..

Unfortunately, not anymore.. I heard he sold the shop and opened a restaurant next to GTM in Santee, named the Chicken Shop

Does this place use local or natural meats?

I do not think so. Too expensive for the amount that they have to make and what they sell

Cheese does not overpower making it a good combo with the peppers and onions. I had the Father Joe - meatball sub. I know an unusual choice but I've been dying for a good one for a while. This one didn't disappoint. Spicy sauce with perfectly sized meatballs made from beef, not pork. Have to also say something silly. Their soda fountain was great. C lately wherever I've gone sodas have felt off. Their mix was just right - I always have Dr Pepper. Hands down the fries were a huge hit. Mine were garlic and parsley. We enjoyed that they were crispy on the outside and soft inside. The staff was friendly and the interior reminded me of a cross between Philly and NY - brought back some nice childhood memories.

Over the last few visits in the last six months I've noticed the meat quality, overall, has gone down. The meat tends to have chewy, gristly bits throughout, often resulting in me spitting bites into napkins and losing my appetite, not to mention being very cautious not to draw attention from other patrons and turning them off. Yesterday was the worst experience. The entire sandwich was unappealing. It was not only chewy but the flavor was off. My wife and I dabbled at our garlic fries and made our way. Sadly, we have lost our desire to return.

Food came out in about 20 minutes and everything was very fresh and piping hot. The cashier was very friendly, and gave great recommendations. For food: - Wings - incredible. Super juicy on the inside with a perfectly crispy exterior. Easily a standout. - Catfish - just as impressive as the wings. Crispy batter with tender, flaky juicy fish inside. - Mac & cheese - luscious and rich, one of the best I've had. - Candied yams - honestly the best I've ever had and I don't usually like yams at all. The seasonal cantaloupe refresher was light and refreshing a great pairing with the meal at the recommendation of our cashier. We also got the chocolate chip cookies (made by the owner's daughter) to go and they were a sublime finish to the experience. Easy 5 stars, I'll definitely be back when I am back in the area.

The cashier told us that we should make a perfect forkful with a candied yam and some mac and cheese, and that combo was as tasty as she said. We also added a side of cornbread which came out in a muffin cup. It was very moist and flavorful. We got a melon refresher, which comes with chunks of actual cantaloupe. This was on the sweet side, but paired well with the savory proteins. There was a steady flow of customers that were dining in or picking up takeout. As we were heading out, we heard other customers talking about how delicious the chocolate chip cookies are so we decided to get it to go. There are also seasonal desserts, like mango sticky rice and banana pudding, so we'll definitely be back to eat more delicious soul food and try out the seasonal items.

The thickness of the tortillas were almost comparable to arepas. The adobada was flavorful but I'm used to other places adding guac which was not the case here. The cabeza was not as soft and fatty. The rolled tacos were just ok. There's a salsa bar in the back. They give you the sauce lids when you pay so it's a limited amount that you can help yourself to. It's in a big plaza so parking is never really an issue. It's a chain banh mi spot, but one thing I will say is they stay open later than most local banh mi places, so if you're coming home late and craving one, this is probably where you're going. The left side is a drink cooler with various drinks and grab and go desserts. There are menus on multiple screens, ads everywhere, and it's just very busy on the eyes. Then on the right side you have the drink station and seating. If I'm being honest, I would not sit inside unless I had to. There is a shared patio outside in the plaza though and if the weather is nice, I would 100% take my food out there instead. Most of the tables inside were kind of dirty with crumbs and the trash was full, so it just made the space feel a little unkept. I waited in line and the cashier was very sweet. I ordered a strawberry tea and asked if I could adjust the sweetness, but since the sweetness comes from the syrup it would also change the flavor, so I just kept it as is. I also got the #11 special combination banh mi and asked for extra cilantro because if you know, you know. They take your order, you sit, and they call it out. I waited maybe 10 minutes, drink came out first, sandwich right after. The strawberry tea surprised me. I really thought it was going to be super sweet but it was more like a 6 out of 10 on sugar. Once the ice melted a bit it got even better. It tasted fresh, fruity, not artificial, and there were actual strawberry pieces in there. I really liked it and would get it again. Now the sandwich. It was solid. Not mind blowing, not the best I've had, but it did exactly what I wanted it to do. The bread was fresh with a nice crunch but not too hard. There was a good amount of mayo and pate, the meats were flavorful, and everything just worked. The pickled carrots and daikon could've had more crunch, they were a little soft, but the flavor was there and helped balance everything out. They do add soy sauce and you can definitely taste it. I'm not the biggest fan of that so I'd probably ask for no soy sauce next time, but that's just me. Also when I ask for extra cilantro... I mean EXTRA, because I felt like what I got was just a normal amount. Overall, really solid. Good sandwich, really good tea, and a spot I can see myself coming back to especially since they're open later than most places. It might not be the best banh mi in the area, but it gets the job done when you need it.
