The only place we go for our lizard supplies! The owner and staff are so awesome...that's half the reason we choose Critters. They take very good care of the animals and can answer just about any question you have about your pets. They have EVERYTHING you need - vaccines, food, habitats, treats, pet care products, I mean any and everything. Just to prove how compassionate they are about animals, I'll leave you with this story... We went there one night and the guys working were taking care of this little ragged looking kitten who was meowing in pain and bleeding. Well, some rotten person had shoved a kitten into the Critter Shop's old milk shoot in the back of the building and luckily a lady walking to the store heard him and alerted the staff. They took him inside, got him healthy again, and named him Keyboard because that's where he loves to sleep. They fattened him up, gave him a cute little collar, and gave him a home right in the shop and the cat is LOVING it. They've had him for about 3 years now and he is just the coolest cat ever. They could have easily just put the cat outside or gave it to a shelter, but they decided to get it healthy and give it a home and for that reason alone, I will always be a loyal customer! read more

after years of dealing with poor service at critters and repeatedly having near every employee mess up the most basic orders... you try and get them to fix the problem and they get aggressive and argumentative. much quicker to tell long term customers to leave rather than improve their customer service or attempt correcting their own mistakes. I've seen them argue openly with customers while I wait in line and ask them to not come back numerous times even tho it usually seems the customer had a great point and the junior employee just has a big head. owner was a nice guy but he is plagued with fools running the shop daily. they know little to nothing about the animals and get things wrong twice before you slowly instruct them again how to get it correct. and basic math is impossible for any employee there. read more

bought 4 albino cory cats, after they were scooped out of the tank i saw a dead fish in the tank. When i got home i threw them in a quarantine tank and two of them passed away within six hours being in quarantine in my other tank. This was my first and last time in this store. read more

Came in with mediocre expectations with my girlfriend and I just browsing for a new addition to the family. Came in and was immediately drawn to the rabbits ($50). My girlfriend and I were greated by the cutest little fufu we had our eyes set on. We then proceeded to ask the employees for assistance with her and then had asked for them (a group of young boy workers) to check the gender, we were looking for a girl. We hoped to have our rabbit one day down the line potentially have babies :) they confirmed our little Venus was indeed female and we took her home. Come 2 months and we notice some abnormal behavior with our little girl. We made vet appointments. Come to find out or little girl Is our little boy. We were told she was 6-8 weeks but she also appears to be much older than stated If you're coming here just know that everything they tell you isn't the most accurate and possibly up to date. I called the store and when a member answered they had asked what. I needed help with . And I explained my above issue about the Misgendering of our pet, and the employee simply asked me "uhh okay? Is there anything I can do about that?" And I simply responded with "Just ensue you're employees are actually capable " While misgendering is not a big deal. The amount you spend is. And with all the other thought out into what gender pet we even had wanted. It seems a little ugh to not get what you wanted and expected. Absolutely awful, this is one of the worst pet stores I have seen. I originally came here due to the high Google reviews (4.4 stars) as I am looking for a good place to sell some of the guppies I breed. Due to the very hit-or-miss nature of fish care in stores I visited to ensure that my gups would be well cared for and sold to folks who would also care for them. Needless to say, this was a hell hole I wouldn't subject pond snails to. The fish are crammed into tanks much too small for them, have very dull colors (showing they're sickly/stressed), VERY unclean tanks, and there are MANY dead or dying fish in the tanks. Not to mention the sheer lack of knowledge as many species that should NOT be housed together were in cohabitation tanks (betta fish and angel fish for example). The worst example of poor sizing is the multiple larger than 1-foot-long fish crowded in a tank they can barely turn around in near the back of the store, including 3 needle nose gar which barely moved due to the lack of space. The poor alligator at the back of the store has a pool that's much too small and nearly empty and has no toys or enrichment. Its pool has a shredded bottom with scraps of paint(?) that would no doubt be very harmful if swallowed! No space to soak and dull, dry scales made me think this poor fella was fake. Its heat lamp also did not seem to work. Above the sad sight of the alligator was a whole stack of very large snakes stacked on top of each other and crowded under one heat lamp, they had a kitty litter box for a bathtub. That's just unacceptable for snakes the size of a human being. The birds in this store were dirty and stuck in overpopulated, cramped cages. The cages were dirty and lacked the proper toys and chewing items needed for healthy parrots. The reptiles were also kept in very small tanks for their size and with different species they should not be housed with. The turtles at the front of the store were in a very small pond set up that was not big enough for one let alone the bunch they had in the pond. The others in different parts of the store were in similarly poor conditions. Lastly, the cat. For those who don't know, cats carry bacteria that is DEADLY to birds, reptiles, and small mammals. This cat was allowed to roam freely in the store which in my opinion is extremely unsafe. Additionally so as the feeder mice did not have the lid on their enclosure while I was there and that enclosure was on the ground with no way to keep the cat out. Do not go here. I will be likely contacting animal control as the conditions are truly horrifying. read more

Parakeets are inbred, have inherited genetic metabolic disease that causes ataxia 6-12 months later. ETA: 6 months since I wrote my review below, and the bird my family bought has ATAXIA. JUST like the others from Critters. The past several days he's been losing his balance, his head has been cocked to the side, it is clear he is losing his awareness of his orientation of his body. And once again, it is NOT from injury, improper diet, lead exposure, exposure to cheap toys or perches that could possibly be tainted, no exposure to any other sick birds or their feces... I am telling you, whomever breeds these parakeets must be inbreeding because this is the 3rd bird from Critters that has obvious ataxia and the only possible cause is that it is hereditary, from what the vet said it is caused by an inherited metabolic disorder. I told my family to never buy another parakeet from Critters but they didn't listen, now I get to watch my sweet little Lemon die just like the last two parakeets from there. And poor Allegra - our first parakeet from PetSmart - once AGAIN he has to watch a friend die. I am so upset and angry. Something MUST be done to stop this! Original review, summer 2022: Sickened by this place. In the past 3 years Ive bought 4 parakeets. First 2 from Petsmart, Allegra and Mango. After a year, Mango laid an egg and died immediately after. Bought one from Critters - Mango Jr. Died in 1 year after showing signs of ataxia and having either a stroke or seizure - ataxia was not caused by injury, food, or toxins from cheap toys, leaving an inherited metabolic disease to blame. Got another bird from Critters and SAME thing after a year. Slower signs of ataxia, having seizures, and again determined to be an inherited metabolic disease causing it. I bought a bunny from this place, and she had scabs on her face, that turned into big boils filled with pus. Called the vet out, and he gave me meds and cream, that didn't work. I had to get a culture done on the bunny, so I've spent over $300 in just vet bills so far. I called critters and talked to the owner mike, told him what happened and asked if the bunnies came from a local breeder or out of the state, he did not want to help me, did not want to say anything besides "sometimes you get sick Pets it happens and called me an asshole! Horrible customer service. I will never be back in this store. They don't care about their pets, only care about the money. All their pets are sick. I am amazed by the people who rate this place 5 stars. This is not the Critters I grew up with. I was so excited to check out their supplies, as I recently purchased a green cheek conure elsewhere. What I walked into was a horror show. First, the SMELL. There is no way that place is ventilated well enough for those animals, much less the patrons. I can not speak for the reptiles or fish, because I did not look at them. However, every other animal there looked ill and were in cages so small they could barely move. Rabbits were in cages with guinea pigs so small they couldn't even move and were stacked on top of each other at the end of an aisle. The place is so cramped they could easily get knocked over and injured. All of the conures looked sick and stressed out. I wouldn't even purchase toys, which is what I came for, because they were full of dust likely from the lack of hygiene and ventilation. They must run on the old reputation, because this is not the same. This is just an animal mill that does not care about the welfare of their animals. If they did, there's no way they would house so many animals and in the conditions they are in. read more

The way they treat their animals is horrendous. It made me sick. The birds are plucking out their feathers, some of them are almost completely bald, as there are about 15 birds in a cage that's not even big enough for one. They house way too many hamsters together and as a result, most of the hamsters are wounded. I saw not just a dead baby gerbil in the tank, but HALF of a dead baby gerbil in the tank. The Guinea pigs and rabbits have nothing but bowls of food in their cages; not even hay, which the employee who sold us our Guinea pigs a few years ago did not even mention that Guinea pigs require hay as nearly 70% of their diet. It seems like this shop is only properly equipped to care for fish. I used to come here for supplies all the time, but I can't bring myself to support this business any longer after seeing how awful the conditions of these animals are. read more

I was shockingly disappointed with the rats that I bought from here. I used to buy them for my snake and they work well as feeder rats. But I also buy rats as pets, and I'm afraid that their tank of rats may have some sort of lung disease because I bought rats on three separate occasions and they all died and were breathing heavy. Purchased 2 Bettas last week one for home one for the office. Followed all instructions given and both fish were dead within a week. Called several times with no answer. Today I finally was able to get in touch with someone and she told me to bring the bodies back and they will refund me. Well the fish have been flushed already for a few days because no one there answered the phone. Her rude response was put the bodies in the freezer next time until you get in touch with us or can come in. Such a ridiculous request!!!! No need to be rude either very disappointed in a local business!!! I went here because I want to support small businesses and not give Petsmart money since I don't agree with where they obtain their animals from, but this pet shop was shocking. All of the furry animals in there are in incredibly small cages, some with wire on the bottom that hurts their feet. Multiple animals in the same enclosure with not a lot of room for them to move around, and the rats and mice were the worst. Put into a 25 gal glass tank with 20-30 other animals in it and no toys and bad ventilation. Birds had 1-2 toys in a wire cage and the budgies and finches were packed in. Multiple dead fish in the tanks. No employees were wearing masks and a lot of customers weren't. No limit to how many customers were allowed in the small store. This place is obviously in it for profit, and not the well-being of their animals. I will not be buying from here when even Petsmart has better standards on animal care read more

I gave this pet shop a try as opposed to other chains and aside from going through multiple expensive vet visits with sick juvenile animals I got from this site, I will not be returning because when I shopped in Oct 2020, not one employee was masked. This spot has potential and it seems there talent is in there fish department. They should spare the torment of the other small animals and focus on things they are better equipped to take care of. Anyone with a bit more knowledge on reptile, amphibians, birds and rodents would see how poorly these animals are kept. I hope they improve. read more

I walked in wanting to look at bird toys and was immediately horrified. Large fish being kept in tanks that were far too small, even from a non-fish owner's POV, there was a finch with a tumor on its head, very overcrowded with animals in cages that looked barren and dirty. All of the birds were in extremely small cages that looked rusty, no toys or anything. Small mammals were in enclosures that were far too crowded without a proper amount of bedding. I wish I could give Critters in Allen Park, MI 0 stars. Lots of animals on their death bed if you're into that. I alerted a staff member to a hamster that was curled in the corner, bloody and deflated, and let the staff member know that it looks like the hamster had gotten into a fight with another hamster in the incredibly small enclosure, and the staff member did nothing to help the hamster, and as I walked away I heard him say that they went right back to fighting. None of the small animals had hides or much bedding to retreat to. None of the tarantulas are housed properly. Overcrowded bird cages causing a lot of the birds to show signs of stress, for example, almost all of the society finches were missing most, or all of their tail feathers. They house multiple species with different care requirements together. This pet shop uses outdated care techniques and it's clear to see that looking at the conditions of the animals they sell. It's dirty, smelly and cluttered. The staff doesn't wear or masks for enforce the mask mandate. I don't think the staff is equipped with the proper knowledge to handle the amount and types of animals they carry. I honestly have no idea how this shop has as many 5 star reviews as it does. Please do not support people who are not providing their animals with proper care. I would stay far away from Critters. This is one small business that I would celebrate if Covid put them under. There are so many other options for pet shops/rescues. Save your money and support someone else. read more

This place is FANTASTIC! We came in on a whim. We were looking for a pet store near detroit, we didn't expect to be so blown away! They have so many animals that they barely have room anymore! All of the animals are healthy too, I didn't see a single sick or dead fish. This is definitely what I would consider an exotic pet store too. They have what must be thousands of exotic fish lining their walls and staff that actually know what they are talking about! It was like going to an aquarium! They have so many massive crazy looking fish breeds along with 3 almost 5 ft long snakes and a baby alligator too! All I can say is WOW. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. As a child I loved this store they have many different kinds of animals, almost anything you could dream of. But the care they take of them is absolutely horrendous, PetSmart takes better care of their animals and that is saying something. The place stinks, their cages look like they haven't been cleaned in a while and more animals in that store are unhealthy than healthy. The owner is arrogant and refuses to admit he does anything wrong as I've personally argued with him on his care before when I tried to purchase a severely sick leopard gecko because I had the proper medication it need on hand at my hope because I frequently rescue and rehome reptiles but he first tried to insist there was nothing wrong even though the thing had a ball of infection so big in its mouth the it couldn't shut it from what I assume to be a bite from the uromastyx it was housed with, and had severe MBD and stuck shed so bad it couldn't open its eyes. The owner tried to insist to me his care was great bc he's been in the business so long. Today I stopped in and I saw a malnourished constrictor, lizard with eyes stuck shut with shed, leopard geckos missing tails and numerous with MBD not to mention they are selling spider ball pythons which carry neurological issues that typically end their lives. The employees give out terrible information most of which will cause actual harm to the animals they sell, have literally heard one of them tell a customer that bearded dragons don't need UVB, which explains why half their animals have MBD. Will never ever give this place my money again I'm even mad at myself for doing so as a child. Attached are one of the baby geckos I saw today that is covered in stuck shed, most likely has MBD due to the skinniness of its limbs and body and the weird angles they sit it. read more
