In an almost empty restaurant, teenage waiter chose to seat five tall adults at a round booth so that we could all squish in like sardines and knock knees together. Got the chicken pot pie and it was exactly what i expected of a pot pie! golden flaky crust and lots of chicken and veggies. My milkshake was the perfect mixture of ice cream to milk and they even added vanilla when you go there you have to remember your going to a diner not a steakhouse... just saying! Decided to go here with my parents for a mid day meal. There were a ton of people there already seated. It was very good to be honest, for appetizers I got clam chowder as one of my sides with my meal. The clam chowder was pretty good except for the fact it tasted like broccoli cheddar soup. For entrees my father got the chicken & waffles with two eggs, my mother got the turkey dinner wrap that came with tater tots and turkey gravy. My mother has to ask to get the gravy. For my entree I got the fried sirloin with two sides I chose the clam chowder and Mac & cheese. The top of the Mac & cheese looked burnt but once you got into it it tasted good. Over all this was a good mid day meal I suggest going here but it's a pretty average restaurant. read more

I went back to the diner today, and found multiple areas of frustration, causing me to scale back my review from 4 stars to 3. First, of my party of five, I was the first one to arrive. The hostess told me that I couldn't be seated until my friends got there. When two more showed up, she still said no. Finally, when all five of us were there, they sat us. Next, upon seating us, the waitress very curtly stated that it was not possible to split the check, but there was an ATM in the lobby. Which, of course, charged a few that I'm sure went back to the diner. Finally, although food is reasonably priced and reasonably good, thy charge $2.25 for a cup of coffee. Although there are free refills, none of us needed one and it felt absurd. Overall, if I'm looking for a cheap breakfast I'll probably go back. But I can't say that it'll be among my first choices. read more

Pretty convinced everyone working at the Cromwell diner was hungover today. Ok so it's Sunday morning at a diner and there was a wait- totally acceptable. What wasn't acceptable was the attitude of the hostess. After we got seated we placed our orders and got drinks and then our food our waiter had to come back to confirm our orders. Once the food came out 2/4 orders was wrong. We asked for the omelette te we ordered to be fixed and just accepted the wrong waffle- no waffle is a bad waffle right? When the fixed omelette came back it didn't come back with the home fries we ordered. I thought it would come out after so I just ate it, but the home fries never showed up... Drinks were left empty and were promised refills on our drinks but they never came. I understand this isn't a 5 star establishment but the service needs some MAJOR work! Fries are great though, but not worth the hassle. I'll drive 5 extra minutes to the next near at diner next time. read more

I've gotten a smattering of different meals from here but nothing that I would expect too much from. The breakfast hits the spot with big servings of fluffy pancakes, golden brown waffles, and a variety of egg dishes. The Big Cromwell breakfast never disappoints. I personally am not a huge fan of the home fries since they're not as crispy as I'd wish, but I'm a sucker for the French fries. They usually have a specials menu that has really tasty options and which I usually find better than classics on the menu. The tuna melt on Texas toast was ridiculously big but really damn good. This is food you eat that makes you feel awesome when there and a little guilty when you're home. read more

This is exactly what you'd expect for a roadside diner: greasy food, huge portions, super friendly wait staff. My husband and I were driving through CT and looking for some place to stop for dinner. My husband wanted diner-type food but I'm not a huge fan of Applebee's, Denny's, etc and thought it would be more interesting to eat somewhere local. This place was the perfect compromise, and fortunately they were open until 11 since we stopped around 10:30 pm (on Fridays and Saturday's they're open 24/7). They're also right off I-91, no driving around getting lost necessary. I had one of the breakfast specials: two eggs, home fries and toast for $4.50 (so cheap! I think the last time I ate a breakfast that cheap I was in elementary school) and also had a buttermilk biscuit on the side. My breakfast was great! The eggs were soft and not rubbery, the toast was drowning in butter (just the way I like it) and the home fries were amazing (the menu described them as "Yukon gold homefries" and while they seemed to be made of normal potato to me they were super buttery and crispy). The biscuit was good too, but not as good as the rest. My husband had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich ($10) that he wasn't a big fan of. It came with fake cheese (like nacho cheese) and he really didn't like it. We also saw the pasta of some people near us and it looked very unappetizing - I'd highly recommend sticking to breakfast. Service was super friendly, although not the fastest. It wasn't too slow though, we were in and out in about 40 minutes. read more

A solid diner right in my backyard. Can't beat that! They offer the typical diner fare but the breakfast menu is everything. I'm a big fan of the chocolate chip pancakes, avocado BLT, and the eggs Benedict. I also love their daily specials which are delish and wallet-friendly. Service is prompt and with a smile. Pleasantly surprised. Been living five minutes from here for two and a half years, and my wife and I finally went. Since Berlin already has four or more diner choices, and Cromwell isn't 24 hours, I guess that justifies our delay. The menu makes a ton of sense. Many of the breakfast and dinner choices offer a large list of sides for any given dish... there are "free" sides, as well as "upgraded" sides for a small charge. So I got biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs, and my free side was a pancake, a very large, tasty pancake at that. Prices are very reasonable. Our bill came to $21 and change, and that included two meals and two drinks. Really sweet waitress who was willing to help us pick stuff out and seemed enthusiastic to serve us. I have eaten here many times. It is you basic New England Greek diner. The service has always been quick. The food is ok for diner fare and they serve up pretty big portions. I usually order either a gyro or an omelet. One of the few places to eat in Cromwell that is not a fast food chain. As of late the quality of the food has gone downhill a great deal. read more

I really enjoy simple diner food and Cromwell diner does a fairly good job. The portions are huge so I really get at least two meals out of every dish we order. I have always gotten very friendly service here, even the bus boys smile and say hi. The diner tonight was full on the left side and they cleaned the right side from top to bottom. I love a clean establishment. Tonight we ordered burgers. I ordered a breakfast burger cooked to medium and my daughter ordered a chicken tender burger with ranch dressing, lettuce, and American cheese. I thought my burger was really good, it would have been better if the yolk were actually a bit runny. I tried my daughter's burger and the chicken tenders didn't taste homemade, they tasted like deep fried Tyson chicken tenders. My daughter loved it and ate quite a bit so I didn't say anything like I would have if it had been what I had ordered. Overall, I give this diner a 3 star rating. read more

I live nearby and when I don't feel like cooking then Cromwell diner is my go to place. I usually get an omelette which always tastes great. Eggs benedict with corned beef hash was very good too. Really anything with their corned beef is great as it's homemade not the can stuff. Most of the waitresses are very friendly. Our Turkish waitress is the best she always makes us laugh. Crunchy edges, moist not overly sweet (I opted out of having whipped cream). The California omelet is a avocado and bacon lovers dream. Seasoned well and not cheesy or greasy. This diner is in a lot by itself along busy Route 372. Access from I-91 is quick as it is just a block from the highway ramp. Our experience at this diner is we were served quickly and graciously. However, I found the food to be only about average and nothing special. Also, as in most diners, prices are a bit on the high side for the portions you're getting. Exactly what I am looking for from a diner- good breakfast & dirty cheap! This is my go-to-meeting place that's equidistant between Hamden & Hartford to catch up with old coworkers. Whenever I am home, I hit this place up. Why? 1) Its convenient- right off I-91 2) Its cheap 3) The California omelet is slamming! I must have passed this place a thousand times traveling down the I91 corridor and working 2 days a week in the area. I came in about 11:30 today for lunch with a friend that lives in the area and suggested Cromwell Diner when we went out to lunch. We ordered breakfast instead. Both me and my dining companion ordered the meat and cheese omelets with tots and grits on the side. The omelets were big, and loaded with meat and cheese, the tots hot and crispy and the grits were very good as well. I am not too far from here and love grits, but cannot find them locally in many places. I will return here on the weekend to try the other menu items. read more

I've never been more compelled to write a review, positive or negative, than after eating at this place. 2 thumbs down on both service and food. Right when my boyfriend and I walked in we were greeted with nothing but attitude. We put our party size in and took a number. People who came in after us were called before us. My boyfriend asked if they had called our number and the hostess said we were next. While she answered the phone, another man, who had clearly been working in the kitchen, told us we could go sit by the window. No one showed us to our seats. Shortly after, the hostess arrived with menus and put them down without saying a word. When our server finally showed up, he didn't even introduce himself or ask how we were. He asked us if we wanted drinks and then asked for our id's. When my boyfriend jokingly asked if he wanted his too, he responded with "do you want one?" In a condescending tone. Another server came by shortly after and put forks and napkins down. Again, no words. Also, no knives. When we finally got our orders, huevos rancheros, there was barely any food on the plate. It was unlike any breakfast I've ever seen at a diner. Usually my plate is overflowing with food I shouldn't be able to finish. Also, this dish typically requires knives to eat it without making a mess, which we didn't get until halfway through our meal. We were never checked on to see if our food was good until we were done and it was time to get the check. Needless to say, we are never coming back. read more

Value and a great meal. Been here a few times and always walked away satisfied. Yesterday was exceptional. I had the Fork and Knife Burrito. Very fresh, balanced taste. It came with a side - I chose the fresh vegetable - broccoli. It was FRESH and steamed to perfection! My husband had the Turkey Dinner (priced under $9). The turkey was fresh, mashed potatoes and gravy tasty-the amount of food for the price was amazing (photo below for proof ). We also ordered a side of biscuits-which was golden brown and toasted just right. The entire meal (including coffee with free refills) came to under $23! We walked away with leftovers for another meal and very, very satisfied. Will go back again and again - there's so many other things we want to try. Oh, and the waiter had 'panache' offering a "splash" for coffee refills and even asked who should he give the bill to (with a lot of flair). Even he was amazing, with so much style! I had the Diner's Special Breakfast. It cost $8.99 for coffee, eggs, two sausage links, an English muffin, and home fries. It was an excellent value. The home fries were softer than I like but good. A small milk was $2.49 which was extremely expensive. The food was good but not great. The service was good. No problems or real complaints. It was a good but not outstanding restaurant. read more

This is a wonderful diner just off the 91 highway. The parking lot is massive, Upon entering there is a very helpful hostess. I have ordered to go many times, in the morning and evening hours: the omelettes are huge and made with fresh ingredients, I always get egg whites, grilled chicken, hash browns and wheat toast, with a side of turkey bacon. The chicken and turkey bacon are prepared perfectly and are never over done or burnt. The lighting and seating are above average. This a very clean diner with clean restrooms. I was in Connecticut with my cousin for a funeral on Saturday and decided to stop at the Cromwell diner for a quick bite before the service. We were sat in the back behind a sink and asked the hostess with the curly hair and broken hand if we could have a table elsewhere and her face look disgusted like we committed a crime for asking a question. She rudely said she didn't have another booth and snatched the menus and tossed them on another table and turned around and walked away. Her nasty attitude had me and my cousin ready to walk out!!! I'm from New York and not used to having such poor service. I couldn't believe the way we had been treated and that host should be dealt with. Crowmwell diner is clean and friendly. It's a little more expensive than a typical diner, but the good is consistently good. Nothing overly unique or dynamic about the menu. Pretty standard diner food. Wish there was an up to date menu online. It gets busy around lunch time some prefer to order take out and bring it back to my Middletown office.
