I haven't lived in Connecticut for over ten years and it's probably been twenty years since I've been to the Olympia Diner, so I was pretty excited to sit down with some friends last weekend and eat here again. I came with three other people on a Saturday morning and were lucky enough to get seated right away. Like all diners in Connecticut, this place had a menu with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desert featuring all the classics and giving me a slight panic attack whenever I tried to pick something. After some deliberation, I stuck with my favourite breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes and these things did not let me down. I had a short stack but these bad boys were pretty dang beefy and tasted really, really good. I'm sure the maple syrup was not actual maple syrup, but I love the cheap crap and it sure did the job on these pancakes. Oh, and the best part about this place is that it's like one of those old style dinners that looks like a silver salt shaker. Overall, Olympia Diner is a great diner and I think the only one left on the Berlin Turnpike (don't quote me on that). The food here was great, the staff was friendly, and the environment was "Connecticut diner" and that's what I was looking for. Place is great. read more

We were on our way to see Pitbull at the Meadows, in full Pitbull outfits, and stopped for a bite to eat before the show. The staff were excited to see us and jumped to greet us. The service was superior, the food terrific and the ambiance was pure classic diner, exactly what we wanted! A wonderful time and a great crew working there! The salt would not come out of the salt shaker so I took the top off. What I saw was a rusty filthy mess. I reported it to the waitress and told her that this needs to be thrown out as it is rusty. She took it away and did not even offer an apology. She brought another salt shaker and said this one is clean. I took the top off of the supposedly clean salt shaker and this is what I found another rusty filthy mess. The sad thing is this salt shaker was worse looking than the first one I complained about. This is disgusting and I assume a health code violation. I will not be going back to Olympia diner in the future. read more

After a visit to the area we decided to stop for a quick bite. Its been a few years since we visited and its not what we remember. The place was quite with just soft music in the background. Our food was a different story, Buffalo wings were not buffalo but regular wings, tasted just ok, I ordered extra so I could bring leftovers home for my kids but that was a failure because the food was spoiled. The chicken from my wrap was rotten, I was surprised that the cooks didn't notice. The rest of the food was flavorless. We tried to save it with salt. I feel bad because we received a five star service with a 2 star food. read more

But any future sightings are probably on the endangered species list. The art deco style stainless steel modular diner known as the Olympian Diner has been a local landmark for 70 years, but its days are numbered, as its for sale and will be likely be torn down and replaced by a fast-food restaurant with drive through service. Yesterday, three of us hunkered down into one of their classic booths with tabletop jukeboxes and enjoyed a late breakfast/early lunch meal. The interior is a real Flashback in Time and has a nostalgic Happy Days/American Graffiti vibe to it. Now that's kind of expected for a diner that's been there since 1954. We all ordered from the breakfast menu -eggs, home fries, toast and their celebrated corned beef hash. I went with a simple Western Sandwich of egg, chopped ham, peppers, and onions on rye toast ($5.25). I garnished it with ketchup and hot sauce, enjoyed a good cup of Olympia Diner coffee, savored the nostalgic look of the place, and said a likely farewell to a local classic. read more

It's a classic diner. A style I truly appreciate. Even has the individual jukebox at each table. So cool. But the food. The restaurant is over 70 years old. Meaning no disrespect the meatloaf seemed as dense and old. And I'll wager the mashed potatoes are from a box- possibly the gravy too. Still fantastic. I haven't been visiting Olympia very much in recent years and it's not them, it's me. I am sort of obsessed with another breakfast place in Berlin CT because they have amazing biscuits with sausage gravy. Now, Olympia doesn't have that on their menu but their menu still kicks butt. One thing to be mindful of, the menu that you can access from their website is not the whole menu. The menu is huge (in person). So you can't see a proper description of the amazing gyro omelet I had on Saturday but it had beef gyro meat, spinach, tomatoes and I added American cheese (sorry, I like a melty cheese with my eggs). So stinking good. My wife had her usual-hash omelet (marked on the menu under "for hearty appetites". If you're looking for a good meal, fair prices, a welcoming atmosphere...Olympia has it. I went for breakfast. The back part of the menu was for that. I got 2 eggs, potato home fries and toast - it was $9.40. That's quite expensive for breakfast. There were 5 waitresses standing around on their cell phones. I would never go there again. I had to ask for water. read more

I went with my family a party of 4 not a big deal. The waitress Michelle was nice in the first 5 min of our interaction and after that she went to the bathroom and came back a little sketchy. She forgot what we ordered. Had to be reminded and acted oblivious. Out of 5 plates only 2 were correct and one was missing. She dismissed us when we came to her and did not remove the right items. She lied unfortunately and said we had a discount but truly she still billed us for the meals and said the manager left when we clearly saw that wasn't true. The food was not good and im highly disappointed in the food the waitress and the way the place looks. It definitely changed. They need to close down ASAP. So sad smh read more

Earlier this week was in the area, so took the opportunity to stop in during lunchtime. Last time here was 5+ years ago w Demanding Dan for breakfast. Parking lot was pretty full, as were most of the booths, so decided on a stool at the counter. Last time, my CBH omelet was excellent. Their hash is very similar to how my Mom used to make it, almost patty-like and browned on both sides. This time, I ordered another of my diner go-to's, a Turkey club. Plus with gravy for the fries, who feel a little lonely w/o it. Stop right there to mention Marina, a six-year veteran of OD, who has seen it all and then some. She was very efficient and they will miss her when she starts her "big girl job" (her words) in Boston in a week. Efficient and as sparkling as a Wyoming sky on a clear night. Food came. Fries are fries (at least they were nice and hot), gravy was nice and gravy-like, and.... that's where it ended for me. The club? Toast was very underdone, turkey was (for me) just ok, as was everything else. Nostalgia and an old diner vibe still exists, although the jukeboxes (at 7 selections for a dollar) no longer work, serving only as a sentry to a less hectic world. Waitress forgot multiple things had to keep calling her over, forgotten food, food not cooked right,was getting avoided. Gave me a 10$ discount but didn't take out an item so basically got no discount. Music machine didn't work and waitress watched us while we were putting the money in and trying to get it to work then 5 minutes later proceeded to tell us it doesn't work when we asked Definitely not going there again. read more

Came here today and received excellent service! I tried the BLT wrap and I wish that I went with the standard one... it thought I would like the wrap but it just didn't complement the sandwich. The cheddar jalapeño poppers were to-die-for. I usually like the cream cheese ones and these just satisfied every craving I had. Fries were good and my wrap came with a surplus of them! No sprite but they do offer ginger ale on tap! I had 2 or 3 glasses and again our server was extremely attentive. It is a little dark inside but I was able to sit by the window which was lovely! Olympia is a shadow of its former self. There's no longer a bustling crowd at noon, and I can understand why: poor service and low food quality. I ordered three scrambled eggs, expecting them to be wet, but they arrived dry. The toast was barely buttered, and the home fries were lackluster. My wife's kabob was delivered without the kebab. What was on the plate was something I wouldn't want to serve to anyone. I'd recommend going elsewhere. Update: both my wife and I suffered with diarrhea for 2 days after. read more

Me and my girls Fran and Teresa took a visit here, taking a break from breakfast at Courtyard Marriott in Cromwell. The western omlette was well made, although it will NEVER compare to the ones at makris. The bacon was a little too crispy for our liking, especially Teresa. Wednesday night after a long day, the Mrs and me were hungry and wanted something quick, breakfast. Stopped in and were promptly seated, waiter took our drink order and we looked at the menus. Pig in the blanket and Montecristo sandwich. 5 minutes later we got our meals, everything looked OK but "processed" and tasted OK but it small in size and pre-made and just warmed up. Gives that old school diner feeling as the interior remains the same from opening. I've been here quite a few times and our waitresses have always been very friendly and attentive to our table. I have tried the BLT club as well as the patty melt with fries (which I wish were a bit more seasoned) but overall great meal! read more

I really enjoyed this place. After driving by I decided to bring my mother in law for lunch. She's always down to ride - she was in heaven. The inside is just like an old school diner. We are simple gals - a decent cup of coffee, good short stack and some yummy fries. Olympia had all of that. So yummy and delicious and not expensive at all. As a road-weary traveler, this was the diner I was craving. Super retro feel. Like the diner from Pulp Fiction. Big neon sign out front, plump leather booths inside. Each fitted with its own personal juke box. Obligatory placemat with ads for the top producing real estate agents in a 10-mile vicinity. No, but seriously, thank you real estate agents. Without you, diners would not have placemats. Your advertising dollars are helping to preserve tables around the world. Since my life is basically in shambles, I tend to eat whatever the hell I want. Do I still have regrets the next morning? Sure. I do everyday. That's part of my daily routine. But at the time, I just order whatever suits me. That's why I start my day with a three egg omelet, side of heavily buttered toast, hash browns, and sausage links. If I could eat this for breakfast everyday for the rest of my life, I would. Yes, my life span would be reduced by 10 years or so, but honestly I think it'd be worth it. Let's face it - your last few years aren't the greatest anyway, mostly spent bedridden and needing assistance just to go to the bathroom. That's no way to live. That's why you need to live for today. That's why you need to visit Olympia Diner and eat the greasiest food you can. Unless you are already like, 80 years old. I mean, if you want to live long enough to watch your grandchildren grow up, then cut down on the grease. For the all that is holy, extend your life. Try the keto diet. I hear that's a thing. I give 2 things going for this diner. For one the service was good as the waitress was lovely and served us with the utmost kindness. She was awesome! The ambiance wasn't too bad either with the classic diner feel and comfortable seating arrangements. The food though brings this diner down. The fries were subpar and my burger was slightly undercooked and tasted plain. The prices here are also fairly high for the food you're served. read more

A classic diner that has been around for over 50 years and counting for locals and travelers. I was just a kid when my parents first brought me inside this very cool diner . You feel transported back in time now when you enter seeing jukeboxes at each table and the 50's flare all around. They still have a amazingly good menu . You can't help but take your time ordering for there is many choices. Today I wanted a hot turkey meal with mashed potatoes and gravy with stuffing and mixed veggies just like my grandparents made on Thanksgiving. They even have a side of applesauce for the kids or kids at heart like Me !!! The meal was fantastic. My BF decided on a fried fish sandwich which he added bacon to it and I got to say that sandwich was phenomenal ! Classic diner feel in atmosphere and food! We sat down at counter to avoid the 20 minute wait. We were immediately greeted and offered beverages. We desperately needed coffee and it was hot, fresh and surprisingly tasty for a diner. The inside of the place looks like the original decor and seating. The stools at the counter wobbled back and forth and we're uncomfortable to sit at. Orange juice was from a machine and not freshly squeezed as I would of hoped! But good coffee made up for that! Things ordered: monte Cristo, corned beef and hash, hamburger and chicken tenders. Burger was not big enough for bun and it was like I was just eating a bread sandwich? Tomato and lettuce were fresh tho. Everything else ... ehhh just ok. It was nothing out of this world but it was not bad either! Classic dinner right over the newington boarder. Has two sides of building, with the entrance giving that diner feeling and the backroom offering more of a restaurant ambiance. Young man took our order and promptly forgot about us. He did not put our order in and we waited for 50 minutes asking where is our food? People that came in after us were able to order, get the food, eat and pay in this time. Waiter blamed the kitchen saying they got messed up, but even other diners were saying they could see that he never put our ticket in. Not once did our waitress ask us if we wanted to refill our coffee or water during this time. we had 3 children with us who were extremely hungry and by the time the food came out we were eager to finally eat, only to be extremely disappointed. Classic diner with jukeboxes in each booth. Super cute, and very clean inside which I appreciated. Food is typical diner food- but a little greasier than other diners in the area, hence the four stars. Coffee is surprisingly delicious. Eggs are always cooked as ordered, and we always leave full and happy. Service is excellent and the different servers we've had have all been fabulous. Another spot for breakfast in CT that definitely stays busy and so they truly receive the local love for being a staple in Newington, however they do miss the mark when it comes down to certain items on their menu. I went with a few basic choices, nothing too crazy really. Their bacon was crispy and packed enough flavor for me to truly enjoy each bite and trust me, I most certainly enjoyed it but when I moved over to the home fries, whose HOME did they come from? These potatoes were relaxing inside of some watery bliss all day long, turning to a soft mush consistency and with little to no regard of anyones feelings, taste nothing short of mad at the world and upset with the life they led thus far. I even tried to add salt and pepper to the situation at hand with these home fries and even the seasoning could not help. Poorly executed imo but we must move on. It is hard to go wrong with eggs fried hard and so at least the eggs came through with a good bite and decent flavor, along with my English muffins, again....unless you burn them, they will be fine. This brings us to the pancakes or GUM CAKES because they had so much chew, I thought someone delivered me a pack of bubbalicious! Fluffy and thick is one thing but even while cutting these pancakes, I knew that I was in for a special treat that I did not ask for. I chewed on a fork full of pancakes for so long, I was able to plan out my day in my own head before it finally broke down in my mouth and went down. That was quite enough for me on their pancake front. Service was decent enough here but I do not see a strong need to return anytime in this life or anyone else's until some changes have been made. read more
