Since I was going to be in the area, I thought I'd give Main Street Diner a try after reading some of the reviews. The place certainly has the classic diner retro look and offers a lengthy breakfast and lunch menu. I ordered the pastrami Reuben sandwich for $16.99. It was served with three pickle slices and cole slaw in a very small cup (not even two forkfuls); French fries are $10.99 extra. The sandwich was medium sized and most of the meat was stacked in the middle of the bread and not spread evenly on it, giving the impression of a bigger portion when viewed along the cut separating the halves. Even then, it would be a stretch to say this was more than a very modest serving of the pastrami. The sandwich tasted ok, but nothing special. I know that prices have gone up significantly, but have been to other similar eateries lately that serve more substantial and tastly sandwiches, including fries, for less than I paid here. No reason to go back. read more

Cool old diner! I'm something of a diner junky. My job has me traveling a lot and I try to avoid chain restaurants whenever possible. I look for privately owned, mom and pop places and have an affinity with classic diners. The food is hearty and the coffee is good. Main Street Diner came up on my Yelp search and I just knew, after getting off a long flight, it would hit the spot. I was not disappointed! I was greeted with a friendly smile and hot coffee. I ordered an omelette with toast and a side of sausage. Perfect!! Look, breakfast, in my mind, is easy to be good, but hard to be great. They were great! Everything is served with pickles and Coleslaw. Still in the area for work and Main Street diner was close to my location as it was just a 3 minutes walk. Looks just like the movies with their 50's styles theme. It's very small, however, very quiet, cozy, clean, and nicely decorated. At our table was a cute little music box dated before I was born. For a small diner, their menu was well crafted and very thick and had a wide variety of options, and it was hard to make a choice. Their hours are 7 am to 2 pm and Breakfast is served all day. I thought it would be 24 hours service but I guess not all diners operate that way. Service from our waiter was excellent, I am sorry I didn't get his name. As we took a seat, our drink order was taken and we were given time to review the extensive menu. Food came out very quickly and was delicious. I ordered the Happy waitress as it sounded fancy and never had anything like that before. It was a grilled cheese with bacon and tomatoes. I was happy after my first bite as when the melted cheese with bacon and tomatoes graced the tip of my tongue, there are no words to describe the taste. I was indeed happy after my first bite My friends had little Italy and the pastrami nightmare and they both enjoyed their meals. This diner is a must check out if you're looking for a breakfast and lunch spot in the area. A week later I made my second visit because it was that good and everything was the same. When the MSD was mentioned in the most recent edition of AAA magazine, I had to see what all the buzz was about. First of all, out of the 50's, literally. Very iconic, stools at the counter, some booths, lots of stainless steel, yadayadayada. The menu is extensive, especially for breakfast which is served during all hours (currently 7A to 2P, daily). Tabitha took my order, which was the Hillbilly Omelet (ham, sausage, Swiss and potatoes in an omelet), with "home fries" and rye toast. Coffee found its way to me continuously. The omelet was very good, but I was a little disappointed in the "home fries", which seemed to be small potato nuggets deep fried. I'm more used to fresh sliced potatoes and onions, well-spiced, simmering on the back end of the griddle all day. They also don't serve homemade corned beef hash, which is almost a prerequisite to getting a 5-star rating from me. Service was EXCELLENT. Tabitha handled everything in the front end, even w her broken toe encased in a foam bootie. And she constantly wiped down counters, booths, etc. Very personable, too. Basically a two-person operation. Cook, Tabitha, and part-time dishwasher. And lots of regulars, based on the greetings. Worth a trip. read more

Super cute diner!! Old fashioned with little jukeboxes at each table (ours didn't work, not sure if they're supposed to) but I loved the ambience. Typical diner food but with many Polish options (kielbasa, Polish skillets, rye bread and more). The coffee we got was ok but the food was good. I got eggs over medium with bacon and homefries, my sister got an egg sandwich on a roll and her husband scrambled eggs with kielbasa and homefries. We all enjoyed our meals which were priced well. We love going to Main Street Diner for breakfast. The menu offers a large variety. Food is great and we just love the nostalgia!

First time ordering from Main Street Diner and really what can be said? Pretty expensive for the quality of food that you get. We ordered the hash omelet and the New Brunswick omelet. Also ordered a side of bacon and 2 juices. The hash seemed like it was something from a can. Wasn't bad but very blah and mushy. Other than that the omelet was cooked well. The other omelet was decent but the country gravy did not seem home made and was very bland. Home fries were decent but again, fairly bland. Nothing really stuck out about them. Bacon was this and crispy, perfectly cooked. The orange juice and the cranberry juice were both fairly warm. I'm assuming it's because they pack everything very tightly all in the same bag. Maybe package the cold and warm items in different bags or whatever. That should be common sense. Overall not a bad experience but not a great one either. I don't really think I'll order from here again just based on Price vs. Quality. read more

We've been coming to this diner for years, and I love it. It is very clean and has consistently good food. The service is always fast and friendly. Love the retro design - each table has a little jukebox. They have an extensive menu with all the typical breakfast items and much more. While the wife spent a rare Saturday working from home we decided to give her peace. I'm amazed the reviews don't have this in the 4 category. This place was amazing. The 2 front of house staff were right there bick banks boom. I had the hungry man breakfast the kid the Oreo pancake. We brought home a breakfast sandwich for the wife. Im actually surprised that the kid hasn't asked me to go back yet. We will return. But I also know park on the street they have like 3-4 spaces behind the building. When I lived in this area 5 years ago, I came here a couple of times and even brought friends, and we enjoyed it. However one of the last times I went back, although it was before closing time, we were told they were closing and we couldn't be served. I remember being turned off by this, but gave them the benefit of the doubt that it was a one-off thing. Now that I am living back in this area, I was looking forward to going back to this diner. My husband and I arrived at 1:20pm, and their signage and online info all indicates they are open until 2pm. When I checked-in on Yelp upon my arrival it even said "40 minutes until closing." Surely 40 minutes is enough time to crack open a couple of eggs and we'd be in our way before 2pm. It's not like we were arriving at 1:55, or like we were entering a place for a 4-course meal. 40 minutes till closing is plenty of time to cook and eat a couple of eggs. But as soon as we reached the front door (which was open and unlocked, and lights were on) we were told that they were "getting ready to close up shop." Once again, we were turned away. So although it was about 5 years apart, this was the second time in a row that I came to this establishment during their operating hours and was denied service. I'm so turned off that I will not be going back here or recommending it to others. I cannot in good conscious waste my time or recommend to others to visit an establishment during their operating hours, when there's a 50/50 chance they might not be served. We will give our business to other establishments who treat customers better than this. read more

My wife and I arrived during the relative calm between breakfast and lunch. We noted on the menu insert that numerous favorably priced breakfast specials are offered until 11AM that we missed by 15 minutes. Undeterred we both decided on ordering breakfast with my better half choosing scrambled eggs while I selected easy over. Both included a choice of toast, wheat thank you, and home fries. My eggs were grease free and cooked as requested though the portion of potatoes was on the skimpy side. Her scrambled eggs were overdone after the cook chose to flatten them with a spatula on the grill. Late morning prices escalate at the bewitching hour of 11AM from $1.99 to $5.29 so I would recommend arriving early unless someone else is paying. Our server performed double duty by handling the cashier duties, but managed to promptly greet and serve each table. read more

At one point in my life I was actually a resident of Plainville for a very brief time, now my parents live here so whenever I find myself in Connecticut I try and eat at as many places as I can. Saturday morning I found myself at the Main Street Diner. I came here around 8:00AM with 4 family members and this was surprisingly my first ever trip. We were seated right away and our waiter was A+ the entire time (I'm terrible with names). This diner like many others offers you all the basic breakfast options you could possibly be in the mood for and even a top of the line chicken fried steak! On top of the chicken fried steak it comes with hash browns, toast, sausage gravy, and eggs right on top. The food tasted just as good as it sounds too. The hashbrowns snd eggs were delicious and the chicken fried steak was absolutely fantastic! I would so far as to say this might be my favourite breakfast in the Plainville area. Over all- you'll enjoy the food but you'll get a sense that profit is the only concern of the owner. That said, I do visit frequently and the staff are great....Just be careful with their pricing because it's high and not all prices aren't listed (be sure to ask before ordering). Also, they choose to not offer their specials' price on the days surrounding the holidays (but not tell you.....fine print only alludes to price excluded on actual day of holiday)... you'll get a shock when you get your bill As far as the owner- he's put his real estate business cards on every table and place setting... yet I've never seen him nor has anyone I've asked. read more

I go to this little place on the weekends sometimes and it has such an "old school" feel to it! Also, once, when my boyfriend was ordering some food with a ton of sides, the waitress said "Why dont you just get this one?" (it included all of what he wanted, for a cheaper price). We've passed by a few times and had the opportunity to check it out. The place is tiny, but extremely "diner-authentic." A real piece of history down to the juke-box selectors at each booth. Kudos to them for keeping the vintage neon signage outside -- and it's lit every night, even though they don't serve dinner. What's really outstanding is how impeccably clean the place is. Even the salt and pepper shakers had been wiped down. It's the kind of clean that you know comes from lots and lots of hard work. Burgers were large, quite tasty, not greasy and conveyed on very good seeded buns. They use good-quality fries. They could've had better coleslaw. Coffee was delicious, fresh and re-filled conscientiously. Remarkable was the size of the menu for a place so small. On our return, I plan to try the potato pancakes, pot roast and -- get this -- crepes. We were served by a sparkling woman who is the archetypal diner waitress (although she didn't call us "darling" or "hon.") Food arrived quite quickly although there were very few people dining on this Monday afternoon. Pricing is very fair -- on the low side for diner fare. We'll be back! This decades old traditional diner has been brought back to life by new ownership! While the kitchen is no longer directly behind the counter, the place still has the old ambience patrons have known for many years. The coffee is hot, the food, while still being typical diner fare in most cases, is delicious, and the wait staff are friendly and an absolute kick to eavesdrop upon. The diner itself is a traditional roadside rail car design and was moved to the town several decades ago. From the neon signs atop the building to the stainless steel paneling inside and out, it's a classic. I grew up with this diner just down the street from my house. While I don't live there anymore, the Main Street Diner will always be among my fondest memories of small town Connecticut life. read more

Came here with some friends after a VERY long night and about 2 hours of sleep. Loved the outside! So hard to find a TRUE diner...well at least in the SW. We seem to be pretty flush with them out here on the East. Anyway, service was fast and friendly. Had the Philly Cheesesteak Omelette (minus green peppers.. add in jalapenos) and it was exactly what I needed to put me in a food coma and it was tasty to boot.
